I grew up right next to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, so I was hoping this would give me those vibes on our first eating destination upon our flight arrival. Nico's delivered, however the food was a bit of a disappointment, but the cocktail was delicious. There's free parking and a decent amount of it, though I can see it being full up at peak hours. There's a good amount of seating both indoors and out, with most people preferring to be outside. I enjoyed the indoors table right next to the window, but there were a couple of flies that attacked our food incessantly. Despite the chatter of tourists, it's a pretty chill atmosphere. The bar is in the middle, and you have to order your drinks separately from your food. As for food, we had to wait in line, show our vaccination proof, and then order and pay at the front. You get a buzzer that goes off when your food is ready to be picked up. If you want poke, you need to order separately around the corner at their fish market. - Fishermen's Stew Tastes like a saltier clam chowder, with thick fish chunks within. My boyfriend really liked it, and I thought it was ok. It's a little on the soupy side, and the sourdough bread cannot compare whatsoever to San Francisco sourdough (seemed more like a French roll to me). Pretty good price for the stew in bread bowl combo, but keep in mind it's not full entree sized. - Fried Ahi Belly I was really excited for this, being a lover of both ahi and fat, but this was honest to God the biggest regret of my Hawaii vacation. I'm not sure what went wrong, but the ahi tasted like a stale fry, the spicy tomato salsa just tasted like bland pico de gallo, and the rice was pretty godawful mushy. I chose mac salad for the side and wished I chose the green salad instead, but it was basic and the best tasting thing out of this dish. The ahi belly had a very oily/fishy taste, almost like I was eating salmon belly instead. Nevertheless, it was neither really fried nor did it taste fresh or moist, so it was just a complete waste of stomach space. Have no idea why this is so highly reviewed, but I was definitely bamboozled. I had to swallow it all down because I hate wasting food, and it tasted like eating fish scraps. This coming from someone who eats days old sashimi and picks at fish bones... - Fried Calamari (Side) For a side, they give a lot. Basic lightly fried calamari with lemon squeeze and cocktail sauce. - Kilauea Lava Flow I've never had a lava flow, but wow I'm enlightened. It's like pina colada, but better, because it adds strawberries! We felt pretty good after sharing this cocktail (me especially). We actually like the rum to be less... present. Yum factor was 10/10! They don't write out the prices on their cocktail menu, but this was $12. If I was judging solely on the dish I hated, it'd be 1 star, but the general quick service, vibe, and amazing cocktail makes Nico's alright. I'd give them another try with a different menu item. It was my 2nd time here and the 1st time I came it was about 5 years ago. had lunch here with a coworker and I had the crab salad and crème brûlée cheesecake. Upon entrance, there are sanitized menus that you can take a look at. There was live music, so it was pretty loud, but I enjoyed it. We picked a table and one of us went to go place the order. I've never had the crab salad so I was pleasantly surprised. The vinaigrette is delightful and the crab cake was not salty. My crème brûlée was sooo delicious, I ate the whole thing. The seafood here is top tier. It's bought fresh daily. The service is good for the most part. I've had some good ones and bad ones but I know it's not the restaurants fault if their server is having a bad day so I've never held it against the place. Inside is a nice local style place. Summer time gets hot but for the most part it's still awesome. I carry a personal hand held fan when I enjoy the place but otherwise I'd eat there weekly if I lived closer. read more

We were looking for a restaurant with outdoor seating. I haven't been to Nico's for a few years so we decided to come by. The wait wasn't too long, we waited about half an hour. They also check ID's and Vax cards at the door. We were seated indoors near the bar. Which was fine because their dining room is practically open on one side, the window are huge and the breeze comes in nice. It was super airy and spaced out, so we felt comfortable with that. Our server was quite nice...we ordered our cocktails, their Matson Mai Tai was top notch. If you want a strong drink that would be it. I also ordered the Pier 38 Punch, which is delicious island cocktail. On the specials menu we ordered the Pupu Special, it was seared scallops with a creamy sauce. We also had the fried calamari, seafood chowder bread bowl, braised pork entree, and the pan seared swordfish. All of our food was cooked perfect and we enjoyed every bit. I was very happy we made the decision to come here for dinner. Met up with friends during a recent visit to the big city. After providing proof of vaccination, we were issued a band and was seated with the rest of our group. As soon as we sat down, the bartender greeted us and after ordering, our drinks arrived in a minute. We only ordered some light flair as we were headed to another function. We sampled several local foods, which were all flavorful. The greatest part of the experience was the staff. They were getting busy but still managed to fill their orders and still have time to chat with customers. They were professional, knowledgeable, and friendly. I've been to Nico's before but this is the first review and it mirrors my first experience as well. The location is on the pier and on Honolulu Harbor. Valentines date idea! Hostess made it crystal clear that they don't take reservation. I was too busy handling my infant but hubby told me after the fact that the lady was getting stupid with him. Parking is unpaved as mentioned before, a little sketch, and full on a Friday evening. We left Nico's around 8 and there were more stalls opening up. The food was AMAZING!!! The drinks were STRONG! Might I say much stronger than the ones I've had in Vegas. And I'm not complaining! I enjoyed my lava flow and Pier 38 punch casually. Honestly, everything we ordered came out fresh and delicious. Our waiter did awesome and took great care of us. As the sun was setting I was sitting in an unfortunate spot but they were able to lower the curtains for a bit. Updating my review based on todays visit. I got the special of the day Hawaiian Plate for $19. It was not good. A seasoned person born in Hawaii would instantly know they completely watered down the poi so that it was as liquid as water! No kidding! I have never seen poi THAT watered down in my life where I would have had to drink it like soup. It was tasteless, runny like water from your faucet and totally NOT what I call poi. It was so horrible I threw it away. I had out of town company with me and didn't want to make a scene but if I was alone I would have took it back. The lau Lau was dry, meat dry and tasteless. The kalua pig had no kalua flavoring. The lomi salmon was just ordinary without much taste. It was a disappointing $19 Hawaiian plate, should have gone to Times supermarket to get a much better plate at $9!! On a good note, I did enjoy the outdoor seating area there and the atmosphere. Good, casual place for lunch with a nice view of the pier. I'd recommend sitting outside its great :) I got the chowder bread bowl (fisherman's stew) & my bf got the beef stew. We also shared a side of calamari, which was a good size to share between two people. The bread bowl is a bit small, but that's understandable since it's only like $9. Nothing special about it, just a basic bread bowl - still good if you want something small. I tried a bit of the beef stew, and the beef was really tender & flavorful! Went on 20 Feb for lunch. First time trying Nico's Pier 38 for lunch. Was pleasantly surprised that they had live music for lunch. I did not catch the name of the lone musician, but he played the guitar while singing contemporary songs. I had the lunch burger special and fries and burger were pretty decent. Also ordered their calamari which will be a pass on future trips. The squid pieces were pretry small. It reminded me of the squid you get in the 1 pound frozen blocks. Tentacle small, rings small, and the predominant flavor was bland breading. The views were great overlooking the water and along with the live music, it created a nice atmosphere. Service is "self service" in that you order at the front cashier and you are given a buzzer and you find your own place to sit. Drinks are served by yourself from soda fountain stations and you pick up your order from the counter once ready. read more

"Man does not live by buffet alone" I remember going to Nicos when they were located at another location in this pier area and was more of a takeout/ counter type of operation. " two scoops rice, ahi katsu, Mac or toss" was a staple along with other plate lunch type selections. A while back they decided to upscale it and offer a sit down service including bar drinks and live entertainment in the evenings. They moved to their current location and now offer a larger seating footprint and they even started a second floor dining service offering even more upscale selections. The main ground floor operation is a relaxing, casual operation that offers excellent meals and pupus- they have stayed true to their roots and tout the freshness of their seafood. We've never had an issue with their seafood selections. Sometimes when a regular dinner meal is too much, their appetizers are nice (like their fried calamari and spicy edamame) and go well with your favorite beverage as you listen to live music in the evening. Our favorites are the Salad Nicoise, and the Furikake panned seared ahi dishes. When you sign in (they don't take reservations I believe), check out the daily specials, you can always find something delicious. Decided to try Nico's while on vacation. Nice vibe, good food and great entertainment. Friendly staff and good service. Food was good, Hawaiian Plate had a mix of things, all tasty. BBQ ribs very good with good crisp veggies. Fish and chips; if you're expecting light cod you probably won't like this. The fish was very rich and fries just ok. The house salad with their signature dressing was really good, all fresh and delicious. The shrimp scampi was probably the best dish, was exactly as expected and the garlic bread was just as good. The crème brule cheesecake was lacking, it was ok but would have been much better if the crust was crispier, it was too wet for my liking - I would pass. The entertainment was great - shout out to Christian! Not sure if I'd go again, atmosphere is nice and enjoyed it, but I think you can find better seafood on the island. read more

This place has some great seafood options and I'm told this is where all the locals go. The tuna poke here is very fresh and delicious. Both the wasabi soy sauce and spicy mayo options are great. Parking - lots of parking here at Nico's pier 38 so you don't have too worry about parking at all. They got like 3 different locations for parking. First big meal after landing on Oahu. I always opt for Zippy's but since we hadn't seen our ohana in a long time, we decided for something on the bigger scale. Upon entering, there were 3 bozos hanging out at the hostess stand. No one acknowledged us until we were almost close enough to slap them to get their attention. Glad we stuck around because it was smooth sailing for the rest of our meal. Instead of ordering our own meals, we went with a bunch of different dishes so we could get variety. It was kind of like a bunch of tapas. Waitstaff was amazing, down to earth and offered amazing suggestions. We ordered the ahi sampler, spicy ahi dip, sushi, nigiri and a good amount of drinks. Upon leaving I wanted to grab some gear to remember this trip. This time 3 bozos turned into 1 bozo but she was more like a lost little lamb. That is until I inched closer to the merchandise. Never asked me if I needed help or if I was looking for something in particular. Instead she watched me as if I was going to shoplift. I ended up paying at the bar and left. Other than the hostesses, the experience was amazing. I get it though. You have kids run the hostess stand cause they're in high school or college. Good thing Nico's has already made a name for itself. Otherwise they would be a huge detractor for anyone wanting to drop in and grab a bite. It's unfortunate, but Nico's at Pier 38 has dipped in food quality over the last few years. I remember when there wasn't a bad meal on their menu, to include their specials, no matter when you went. But lately I haven't had as much luck with their food quality, and our recent visit was almost like the last straw. Upon arrival, the greeting was very friendly, warm, and local, which we certainly appreciated. And we enjoy the ambiance, which is very open and airy, and if you're lucky, will have live music. I always get the catch of the day, which on that day was parmesan crusted swordfish with primavera sauce. My girlfriend hadn't had fish and chips in a while, so that was her choice. We broke down and also got the appetizer special: deep fried shrimp with ponzu sauce, which was sold for $16.95. My c.o.t.d. was pretty good, admittedly. It was the other 2 plates that were very disappointing. The "chips" french fries were terrible. They were old, chewy, just terrible. And the fish was not battered well. There was no crunch or crisp to it, just a very bland and almost soggy layer. And there was only one piece of fish, vs having multiple strips. It almost felt like we were cheated. The entire plate was very underwhelming. The shrimp appetizer was just as disappointing. Although the pieces were crunchy (8 pieces), they were very small and not worth the price we paid. We thought it would be legit large pieces of shrimp. Again, underwhelming. Ugh. We looked at each other and just shook our heads. My c.o.t.d. was the reason for not giving less than a 3 star rating. It's always my go-to and always will be, and I will still continue to recommend this place to newcomers or to people who like fresh fish. read more

The waitress who brought us our food said she didn't want to be photographed as I was taking a photo of my drink with the torch in the background. Mind you, she wasn't in the photo. Passive aggressive and weird energy as she dropped off our food. The poke was under seasoned but I can respect that is their style and wants the fish to shine. I must say the place was extremely busy. I really feel like we're ready to dine out without the restrictions. We were seated in the lanai off to the right. Looks like a recent add on since the pandemic closure. Very nice add on. We started with the Pupus . Poke Sampler...Limu, Shoyu and spicy poke $22. Famous Fish Bites $13. Fried Calamari serves with house-made cocktail sauce $14. And Poke style Edamame $8. I ordered the Steak Frites Du Jour with vegetables $30. I asked for my sirloin to be medium well. It came out over cooked. I didn't send it because I was hungry. I wish I had by Tuesday morning. Crazy indigestion My friends however enjoyed the Tuesday night special...Pan Seared Snapper served with soy butter caper sauce with rice and bok Chou $38. Catch $34...Pan seared swordfish served with butternut squash cream sauce, rice and bok Chou. Mommie to be enjoyed her fish and chips $18. Then you have to find a table and wait for your order to be ready; they give you a buzzer thing to let you know when it's ready. Food: I ordered the fish burger and my friend ordered the braised pork belly. Price was a little steep for the braised pork belly (＄17), but it did taste good. The portion was perfect for a one person meal. The pesto made it even more flavorable! The fish burger was a little dry, but what do you expect...... when is a fish patty ever going to be "moist." However, the flavor of the patty and the sauce in the burger was very good!!! Both tasted very delicious!!! At least it came with fries, unlike most places where you have to order it separately. For the past year, I've been disappointed with Nico's signature dish, furikake pan seared ahi. After a few solid ahi bites, I then run into sawing through the "stringy" part of the ahi. I now buy sashima grade ahi blocks at Sam's, cover in furikake, and enjoy to my heart's content. So today I tried and enjoyed the shirmp scampi that had at least 10 good size shrimp and lots of garlicky sauce. But save some of your toasted garlic bread to dip into the remaining sauce. read more

So first things first... service was OUTSTANDING. But, maybe I'm too nostalgic... I miss the old Nico's, the one in the corner. There was never a "hit or miss", always hits. Our dinner was ok; we ordered the Steak Frites, a cheeseburger for the kid and a nice house salad and crab/artichoke dip for the adults to nosh on. The crab dip was fine, the winning piece being the wontons for dipping. The steak was under seasoned and a bit... blah. Overall the vibe is very laid back with a great, local atmosphere. I love recommending this place to families and friends visiting. Nico's is my favorite poké spot on island. I think one of the big draws for me is that with any poke bowl you can pick three different choices of poke. I always go with ahi shoyu, spicy California (my fave), and furikake salmon. They also have brown rice, white rice, and salad which not all poke places do. Their poke is so fresh and feels like it just melts in my mouth. I mean, how can it not be when they are basically right next to the fish market. Nico's also has a good dinner and lunch menu. I would come here a lot with my coworkers pre pandemic and they have something for everyone. You can sit outside with a little view of the marina and they have live music at dinner!
