Now here is a very good classic cheeseburger, and a big, tasty, messy one at that. Patty is surprisingly thick and cooked till just shy of well done -- with almost no pink yet still super juicy -- which is a skill to do. This is the kind of burger where juices will run down your chin. The seasoned griddle imparts a perfect sear and taste to the patty. Then it's piled high with perfectly grilled onions and melty American cheese, which intermingles with each beefy bite wonderfully. Veggies on the bottom taste fresh but take a back seat, letting the beef, cheese and onions be star and co-stars of the show. This is what I had hoped Tucker's "Mother Tucker" burger would be but it doesn't come close. I might add bacon next time for an extra flavor pop. Hubby says adding fried jalapeños is a must. So is Nic's the best burger I've ever had? No, but it surely is up there. This burger is big and a meal in itself, well worth the price tag without fries of just under $10. I have yet to try their curly fries or other menu items. Often times there is a long line at this cramped little hole in wall. Even at the end of the day expect to wait behind a few customers. The limited hours with 2 pm closing time makes no sense to me, and it is still cash only. And don't bother trying to call in an order, they will not answer the phone. Beware that this neighborhood has gotten scary recently, becoming overrun with crime, drug-addicted and homeless. So please watch yourselves and your family. Ok - so the neighborhood looks super sketchy as does the outside of this place - leave your assumptions behind the minute you walk into this burger Mecca. The place is super small but surprisingly clean on the inside. My coworkers and I got there right when they opened. They open at 1030 during the week, FYI - what Google and what this site say were conflicting with one another. This site is right. We were warmly greeted by the man making the burger magic happen. He immediately prepped up for four burgers and began to find out what extras we wanted. I had jalapenos added to mine and did not regret that decision one bit. My burger came out piping hot with a huge mound of curly fries next to it. Immediately two urges overcame me - one, the urge to inhale all of it as quickly as possible - the other, the urge to savor every bit and take my time. A friend and I went for lunch on a hot Monday in August. Neither of us had been for at least 10 years. It lived up to my friend's memory but not mine. We arrived at 11:25 am in case there was a crowd. We were surprised to see no line out the door. We had no trouble parking our vehicle in the gravel parking lot north of the restaurant. When we walked in, Nic greeted us and invited us to take a seat. We had our choice of seats at the bar or at the window in the half full dining room. We chose window seats. As we sat and looked out at Pennsylvania Ave, we waited for the cook (Jovon?) to take our order. My friend ordered a cheeseburger, while I ordered mine without cheese. What arrived at our table was not the Nic's burger we remembered. It had the same amount of meat, but it was served on a standard burger bun. I remembered a flatter party on a wider diameter bun to accommodate the wider patty. Instead, this patty was about 3 cm thick. As my friend pointed out, they deserve credit for making it well done. That's not easy for such a thick burger. It came already cut in half, but due to its smaller diameter it didn't need to be cut. In fact, I found that it was difficult to eat because the height of the patty made it easier for the burger to slide out of the bun as I ate it. I failed to get equal bites of burger and bun after the first one or two bites of each half. This burger fails one of my criteria for a great burger by having poor construction. On the other hand, it came to me directly from the grill, so it was good in regards to temperature. As I have mentioned in other burger reviews, I prefer to wait for my burger to cool down than to have a lukewarm burger from the time it arrives at my table. The grilled onions were another disappointing part of this burger. I wanted double or triple than what came with it. The change to a taller, thicker patty makes it more difficult to add more onions. Any extra condiments simply fall off with each bite, especially slippery condiments like onions. In my opinion, that's another reason to favor wider, flatter patties over these taller patties. The curly fries were tasty. They needed a bit of extra salt for my taste, but due to not being greasy, they didn't accept extra salt easily. With some patience, I added the salt they needed and they turned out well. Was this burger and fries worth almost $16? I want to say yes because I want Nic's to survive and thrive. I want Nic's to offer breakfast again because my mouth drools when I think about pancakes cooked on Nic's flattop. However, when I can get a flatter onion burger at Tucker's or The Garage for less, then I am not so sure. read more

I like my burgers pretty plain, so I just had Swiss cheese and the grilled onions on mine, and I loved every bite. The curly fries were good, but they needed the Cajun seasoning that was provided. The parts of the burger I did eat weren't very flavorful. My french fries were below room temperature cold. It's probably why the french fries didn't really taste very good. I've been eating here since 2003 for breakfast with the guys I worked with. The experience stayed on my mind, it was calling me back, so I would go back. Then I mentioned it to my mother and she said that she was told that they had really good burgers. I had had the chicken fried steak but not the burger. So I eventually got one and WOW! DAMN the burgers are on HIT! I use to get everything on the burger but I can hardly eat jalapenos anymore. But if you love a big burger this is definitely one of OKC's best. I always get a double or triple burger any where else. No need for that here, it's eat big or go home. Or you can split one with a friend type thing, but they charge a lil extra for that. Oh, and I stress... YOU GOT TO GET THERE EARLY! Like 10:30ish or around 1pm, they stop cooking like before 2 if everyone has been served already. Now they do have a Nic's in Midtown, I've only eaten there once. It's kinda not the same when you have been coming to the original Nic's with Nic himself behind the well seasoned ones and twos, cutting and scratching, mixing it up, all up in the video and thangs for many many years. The experience for me only really compares to a few other like Geronimo's or the fresh burger joint in Hobart, Ok. But now there are a lot more better hamburger joints around OKC (likely because of Nic's) than the usual descent franchise spots, so try some out. read more

Do not recommend. I was recommended to this business from coworkers stating that it tastes better than In-N-Out. Me being from the West Coast growing up on the best burger created (In-N-Out), I had to try it. To start, this place looks like a literal home with very limited seating && is a CASH ONLY establishment. The place was crowded for a Friday afternoon, so I decided to wait my turn. There was one worker handling the money and another handling the food. Eventually, it came down to one manning both the money and food and refills. The person cooking did not have gloves on, so they were cooking and flipping the buns with their hands. When more customers came in, he handled the money (again, this is a CASH ONLY establishment), then went right back to cooking without washing their hands. This same person was also grabbing the cups from customers to refill their drinks, then going right back to cooking. This type of service is definitely not what I like to see and very unhygienic. Thinking of all the bacteria on the money that they are touching, germs from customers who may or may not have washed their hands, all those places the possibly unwashed hands have touched on the cups (licking fingers, doorknobs, etc.)... This is not acceptable practice and I do not recommend for this reason. Onto the food: meat was not seasoned enough and the fries were seasoned too much. I drive for Uber and Lyft part-time, and the most frequent question I'm asked by people visiting OKC is where to eat. You would be surprised how hard it is to answer when you're trying to navigate, merge and not talk so much that you miss your exit. So I decided to create a little brochure of the sights to see and places to eat. And then I became very ashamed that while I'd been to Nic's Place, I had never actually been to Nic's Grill. Wanting nothing less than the full experience, I found myself standing in line outside in the rain. The smell of onions caramelizing was so enticing. Once they opened, everyone grabbed one of the few seats available. The first set of patties were already on the grill, so you just have to say what toppings, if you want fries and what you want to drink. Oh, and this is cash only. I had forgotten my 17-year-old needed money that morning, so I had to run back to my car to scrape up some quarters and steal the dollar I keep to tip Sonic carhops. There is a reason Nic gets a head start on his burgers. It's really more of a hamburger steak on a bun. He starts with a half pound of beef and sears it on both sides, then lets it slow-cook to perfection. Most places just do a hard sear on the outside, leaving the middle raw. Nic's are cooked to a consistent, tender medium through and through. Once done, it's served with everything except the bottom bun split mostly in half. I thought this a bit strange, but it gives you the choice of eating it whole or to easily halve it. My gosh, that first taste of meat and onions will take your breath away. There's no big smokey flavor - they are cooked on a grill - or unique ingredients. It's just done exactly as it should be. The homemade fries have a natural curl to them, and taste as fresh as they are. So now that I've experienced Nic's Grill, you need to as well. Or you need to go back. Nic's Place is much larger, they take plastic, their hours are more convenient and the burgers are nearly as good (the handmade shakes are great), but the stories of poor service and long waits after you order continue. Spent the weekend in OKC, and after some research on Yelp, I knew Nic's was a must try. Saturday morning we arrived at 10:45 and to my surprise, we were the first people there. I was worried they were not going to be open, until I got out of the car and could smell the onions cooking. Ten minutes before 11:00, I remembered that it's cash only, so I left my family there and drove to the convenience store up the road. When I got back, it was 10:55 and only 2 others had shown up. Eventually they opened the door at 11:10. I quickly grabbed our seats at the bar right in front of the grill so we could soak it all in watching our food being prepared. Unfortunately, Nic wasn't there this day, it was a young guy who seemed to know his way around the grill pretty well. I noticed he also tried to find time to make conversation with everyone. As for the food, I was surprised at how thick the burgers were. The smell of the onions cooking is intoxicating! I was loving every minute of sitting there watching this kid do his thing. Unlike any other burger place that I've seen, they somewhat slow cook the burgers on the flat top. They cook 12 burgers at a time. Since they aren't cooking fast, they can cook many at once. It was impressive watching the kid manage 12 separate burgers all being prepared differently. I ordered mine with everything, other than mustard and added bacon and fresh grilled jalapeños, cooked to medium well. My wife went with a mushroom bacon cheeseburger and my daughter got same as mine, but without bacon. When our burgers were served up, I'd guess it took about 10 minutes, I absolutely couldn't wait to indulge. It's like Texas BBQ. When you wait in a line, taking in the smells and imagining how great it's going to taste, when you finally get your order, the anticipation is off the charts. The burger did not disappoint. We absolutely loved them. The fries were really thin and we didn't love them, but we didn't go there for the fries. By the time we paid and turned around to leave, I couldn't believe how many people had squeezed in the tiny room. It was shoulder to shoulder packed with folks just waiting for seats to open up. One lady asked at around 11:04 and the one guy there said they'll open "in a few minutes". It was hot and sunny outside, too. The burger itself was just ok/good. Nothing at all special by any means. None of the three of us could taste any seasoning - it just seemed like someone took a 73/27 patty of beef and put it on a grill. Grilled onions were cooked perfectly, though. And mushrooms I added were VERY good. Fries were also just ok. Not sure what grease was used but just no flavor at all. Bun tore apart too easily and the burger wouldn't stay together. It turns into a mess, quickly. Water tasted terrible. If you need a drink, just go with a soda. They prep some of the buns and such beforehand on trays while the burgers are finishing on the griddle. Noticed several flies landing on those buns. Iconic Nic's has been an OKC favorite for a loooong time. It's one of those places that lives in the hearts and memories of so many OKC'ers that it can't be replicated by any other burger place--it just can't. Not having grown up in OKC, the Legend of Nic's, this tiny little hole-in-the-wall burger place, was at the forefront of conversation in my social circles when OKC'ers heard I was into the Yelp thing. It's magical & mystical, the allure this place has for locals; something a transplanter like me can appreciate since I have a place (or two) in my hometown that has the same spell cast upon me. (Carl's Drive In, St. Louis, MO) So I get it. Their deal exclusively and unapologetically burgers & fries. Burgers & fries. CASH ONLY. Burgers & fries. You walk into a tiny little place that has mostly bar seating and probably seats around a dozen or so folks at a time. There's the grill masters behind the bar who are wizards of cooking up greasy spoon food in all it's glory. It's a traditional sort of place. You can order sweet or unsweetened freshly brewed tea, Coke, regular or diet, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, and the like. You can order your burger "with cheese and everything" which includes cheese, mustard, mayo, iceberg lettuce, tomato, pickles, and grilled onions, or some combination there of. The food is served hot and tasty, but the real magic is in the shared experience of everyone whose in there with you. You are a character in a real life play--that's the unforgettable part; or magical if you will. I would say, I tend to like a "cleaner" burger. Next time I'll opt out of the grilled onions, hold the cheese, and stick with as many fresh veggie toppings as possible. And don't miss the fries--hot & fresh, they are worth the calories, but do split them with someone. But really go for the experience of what Nic's is. Embrace the moment. Be there. Don't be that person on your phone the whole time. When you go, you are a part of bringing the magic to Nic's. You'll remember the experience and how it made you feel, the food brings us together, like it so often does, and is exactly what you'd expect--tasty greasy spoon food. If you don't do well in tight enclosed spaces or get annoyed with people very easily, I recommend taking some shots of alcohol before coming here as you get reeeal cozy with everyone around you. This place has been on my radar for many many years and obviously because of Triple D. I am not a resident of OKC but travel down there very frequently to see my Son. It's super small in there and the two guys working the counter are super stars. They greet you when you walk in , serve you, cook and strike up conversations with the regulars and everyone. They are great at what they do and make you feel at home. I got the hamburger combo. They have burgers cooking and ready to go basically so mine came out fast. I didn't do any add one and no mustard and mayo but with the onions this thing was so juicy. A little messy but pretty amazing. It was bigger then I needed but I didn't want to take it home so I ate it. The first two answers are pretty straightforward: Where have all the cowboys gone? The Weekend Saloon. What if God was one of us? He/She would be all like... damn, this sucks. But the latter is a question that will perplex humans for all of eternity, there may never be a clear answer. Merriam-Webster defines a sandwich as "two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between". ... Oh. Right. So a burger is a sandwich, by definition. Glad we settled that. Perhaps then the eternal question becomes: why do people enjoy Nic's Grill? Sure, the potatoes have good flavor, for a potato, but is that enough to motivate people to wait in line, hours on end, for a coveted seat in Nic's diner? One would have to think there is something special about Nic's sandwich burgers, because quite frankly, everyone seems to like Nic's. Perhaps it's the fact that Nic's burger sandwiches fall apart in your hands, not in your mouth. Perhaps it's the fact that you can't see the bottom bun, which begs the question: is there even a bottom bun? Is this even a sandwich burger? Burger was juicy and flavorful. Original but one of the best regular burgers in okc hands down. You may have to wait but it's worth it. Not saying the fries makes a que for encouraging low sodium lifestyle not just diet. Healthy choice and very very healthy delicious burger. I got the cheese burger with onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard. They made it perfectly grilled onions and bun. I would order everyday if I could. You have to get one while you're alive.
