I rarely give 5 stars but the food, service and attention to detail were amazing. I was a little worried due to the small handful of negative reviews but from someone who's been to many great restaurants around the world, this one does a great job.

The atmosphere and setting is very elegant, simple and refined. The food was very artfully prepared and presented by the attentive staff. Everyone was very knowledgeable and friendly with their descriptions of the food. The wine pairing had some unique varieties which paired great with the menu.

One of my best friends wanted to celebrate a life milestone over a bougie dinner with her closest girlfriends. I was tasked with finding the restaurant and came across Nightbird on SF's Michelin Guide. I wasn't able to make reservations online for a table, so I called the restaurant for assistance. William, who helped me over the phone, was so easy going and great to chat with. Loved his enthusiasm, which got me really excited about dinner the following night. Our reservation was for a party of 6 at 7:30pm on a Friday. We happened to arrive around 7 and was hoping to go next door to Linden Room for a cocktail to pass time. The place was closed for a private event, but get this... as we were walking past Nightbird, William, the same employee who helped me with my reservation, happened to be stepping outside at the same time we were passing by. He invited us earlier to our table, which was already setup, and said there was a surprise bottle of champagne waiting for us (thanks to my husband). Nightbird was beautifully simple. The lighting was low but the hues were warm. I appreciated that the music wasn't terribly loud, and we could hear our conversations across the table. Overall service was excellent. Not only did each course come out in a timely manner, but William also ended up being our host. He was just such a joy to have around because of his friendliness and bubbly personality, and he really went above and beyond to provide a fantastic experience for us. That said, the other staff members were great. 16% gratuity was automatically to the final tip, but I gave them a little somethin' somethin' extra to bring them up to 20%. It was well deserved because of the outstanding customer service. We had the 12-course meal but also splurged on extras, such as orders of A5 Wagyu, cocktails, and wine pairings. I enjoyed the majority of the courses we had. The most memorable dishes for me included the following: - Beignet bite and caviar tart amuses bouches - Quail egg (particularly amazing!) - Ceviche - Taiyaki - Trout - Squab - Wagyu - Granita palace cleanser - Whatever the final dessert was - Mignardise & Petite Fours (especially the caramel tart) Honorable Mention: - The donut with broth was incredibly unique. Possibly an acquired taste for some folks. The donut was slightly sweet but mostly savory, and the broth was warm and comforting. The donut and broth were made from the squab, so the umami flavor stood out. The courses that were mediocre: - I didn't mind the "Taste of Ocean" dish, but it was too fishy for some of the girls. - I've had better chawanmushi at Omakase restaurants. - The breads were fine. Not memorable. That said, the butter made with bone marrow was delightful.

Friendly & wonderful sommelier who had interesting wines to share. One of the service staff seemed a bit out of sorts. Beautiful presentation of dishes. Both the filet with black trumpet truffle and scallop dishes were a tad overcooked. While it may have been an off night, I expect more with the cost of this dinner.

We have visited Nightbird 13 times in the past two years; the last time being December 31st 2025. Hands-down, it is our very favorite restaurant in San Francisco for dinner (we love Foreign Cinema for lunch / brunch). The tasting menu is out-of-this-world, Chef Kim does an incredible job of crafting delicious dishes in a way that some Michelin starred restaurants cannot. There's a couple of staple dishes that always appear on the menus, despite the seasonal rotations, there's clearly a reason for that - they are expertly constructed and very tasty. Being attached to the Linden Room Bar allows you to select from a wide-range of beverages from the cocktail menu as you settle into the night. The bar and restaurant venues have their own distinct vibes, the restaurant is the perfect place if you like a low-to-medium level of noise from other diners and background music, this allows you to have very civilized conversations over dinner without raising your voice to be heard. The servers are on-point and so kind and friendly. We always receive the warmest of welcomes (Thank you Jordan, Mark and William. They will also suggest wines as you move through the menu to complement each dish. Do go and try Nightbird, it's a real gem in Hayes Valley and so easy to get to from Muni and Bart. It's also super-handy if you're seeing a show at the Orpheum, which is a stone's throw away.

Words can't describe how wonderful of a time we had at Nightbird. The staff were personable and knowledgeable and the taste and plating of the food was spectacular! The food was well balanced, not overly salty or sweet like other restaurants we've tried. The ambiance was intimate and noise level was appropriate for the type of setting we were going for. This wasn't our original place to celebrate our 10 year anniversary, but I'm so glad we did celebrate it here. Found out the restaurant was also opened for 10 years. How serendipitous is that? I'm surprised this hasn't received the much coveted Michelin stars, but in a way, I'm kinda selfishly happy (sorry!) about that only bc we know the price will def go up once it does receive one. Chef kiss to chef Kim and her team! Keep up the great and creative food coming out of the kitchen!

Not sure why anyone gave them a bad review this restaurant is exceptional! I sat at the bar at the linden room for a bites tasting and everything I had was amazing. And I did not get sick so the person here who left that review they must have eaten something else before they ate here so don't let that review discourage you from trying them out. The wait staff were really attentive and sweet and the food delicious. I definitely will be back at another time for a sit down dinner. The bartender also knows what he is doing with the cocktails so if you want to go in just to drink I also highly recommend the bar you can't go wrong with any of the drinks on the menu. If you get a chance do the tasting bites that's definitely a good way to introduce yourself to the restaurant.

A cold place with colder and condescending service. A Michelin wannabe., that has no clue about how to take care of their customers. We went there on a Saturday evening , around day of the dead celebration last year. When we made the reservation we had to give our credit card to hold, with number of people etc. There was no option to choose seats or tables. So walk in, and as soon as the door opens you are in the restaurant, No front waiting room or nothing. It was completely empty when we walked in and the guy standing at the entrance seated us right in front on the door. So we asked for a different table and the guy said he can't seat us anywhere else because tables are set!! How can they be set I asked and he said since he doesn't know how many people are going to show up he can't seat us. Then he went and checked with another lady who seems to be front of the house and came back with the same message. Ok, so we are spending close to $1000 and this is what we were in for. Then it went downhill from there. I hate it when the wait staff in a restaurant like this put on airs and act condescending,. He got us the compressed coin towels and gave us a warning not to eat those!! Really? This isn't our first rodeo. Then the food followed. As a concept, they were honoring chefs that passed away and it is a great concept but please don't take random stuff and then connect it to a chef. So for Bay are locals, what is chef Judy Rogers of Zuni cafe fame , known for? Apparently she's known for her scallops and not for her chicken. Go figure. Tony Bourdain is apparently known for his ceviche. Then I got this beautiful piece of filet mignon that was somehow cooked to a bland nothing with pieces of ash particles in your mouth. Please don't feed us ash!! Smokey is good but real gritty pieces of ash in your mouth ., yuck!!Only item that was tasty was the hot savory soup type thing served in beautiful English Tea cups. That was it.So a cold place with bland food and snooty wait staff is how I would describe this place. After a multi course menu that took us over $1K , we were still hungry and we walked out of this place and walked into Absinthe Brasserie next door, and ate our food like we were hungry for 6 hours craving for food!! I am not going to Nightbird again. I usually try to give a benefit of doubt to a restaurant and I usually don't post negative reviews based on a single visit but this place is not worth my time or money

Came here with 3 others for a mid-week dinner and I was really impressed! The interior was pretty, with a clear focus on hand crafted ornaments. From the plates to the lights, it was clear Nightbjrd work with an artisan to design and craft its materials. The menu was well designed in a way that made sense, tasted great, and looked beautiful. The overall experience spans over ~13 bites/dishes. Each dish was delicate, looked beautiful, and had a unique taste I wouldn't have found elsewhere. In particular, their pasta and truffle, with the sauce spiraling into the bowl was both whimsical and absolutely delicious. Several types of bread were brought out throughout the meal and each was excellent- hats off to your pastry chef/baker. I also thought the "echos" in later dishes to earlier tastes was an interesting and clever way to make the full menu feel coheasive. My favorite bite might've been the first one- the caviar and beignet bites were such a strong start to the meal and set us up for an incredible dining experience. There's an option for a wine tasting, but we decided to just get a few cocktails/glasses of wine each. The cocktails at this restaurant are excellent and really inventive. The service was excellent. Even with a small dining area, Nightbird makes sure to be fully staffed so that plates were brought out and "prepared" at the same time. And my water cup was never empty! Overall, this was an excellent dinner. It's not cheap- expect to spend ~$300pp- but for a special occasion, I'd say this dining experience is worth it.

I wanted to love Nightbird, but I ended up just enjoying it. It's all beautiful, with professional and attentive service, excellent plating, and a playful series of wonderful bites. Four stars because while I enjoyed everything, what i most remember from the meal was the dishes. They're adorable, and there's a number of cute nods to owls throughout the restaurant. When looking through the pictures (the plating is extraordinary) I remember the dishes, but not the same way you hope to when it's that high-end a meal. The most clever dish is a playful take on donuts and coffee (I won't ruin the surprise) that comes in the midst of savory dishes. Also notable is that the wagyu supplement is priced quite well.

As a vegetarian you always have that existential worry that you'll need to stop by InnOut after a tasting menu dinner. Not here! Had the "Artist-inspired" tasting menu. Amazing food and culinary artistry. Seaweed "caviar", oh-so-creamy tasty bites, and fantastic desserts. Chef is definitely an artist with food Service was great, friendly and engaging, felt like dinner with passionate foody-but-not-pretentious friends... Nightbird is a nice little space, intimate without being brooding. Tables were far enough apart to carry a conversation without hearing everyone else, and the overall noise level was great. Lovely decorations in the space lend to a hideaway feel. Net-def. going back for the next iteration of their tasting menu

We were in the city visiting, found ourselves near Diamond Heights around dinner time, found this…read moreplace Ingredients on Yelp. High ratings, few reviews, but we were adventurous and decided to try it, glad we did. Ingredients is on a corner, looked relatively new from the outside LED "Open" sign prominent in the window. Once we walked in, however, we entered a different world from what we were expecting. Luxurious mustard seats, lots of tables for four, seating with high gray bench banquettes, reminding me of a 70s tune ("Diamonds in the back..."); retro vibe elegantly done with modern lighting and sconces. Not cheesy by any stretch, but in a neighborhood place you could wear sweats or a suit to eat at. Our waiter was Jackie, an enthusiastic young man who seemed like he wasn't just there to wait on tables. Throughout the evening he was easy to chat with while being knowledgeable about his food he served without being condescending. He made someone unfamiliar with the menu feel new-to-us dishes weren't going to be an experiment. We ordered the beet salad, the 8 ounce hamburger with fries, the mushroom risotto, and on Jackie's recommendation the Nepal BBQ ribs. In the meantime they served us house made brioche buns-warm, soft, delicate and chewy, flaky; reminded me of Texas Roadhouse buns, but far better. Served with a little olive oil and balsamic in a separated dish, you could eat them plain and enjoy the craftsmanship of baked excellence. We wanted more but in retrospect we would've been filled up with brioche and not enjoyed the meal. Tough choice. The roasted beet salad, served with shaved fennel, a beet balsamic jus, and an apple-citrus slaw that was fresh, sweet with hints of citrus offset by the fennel so it wasn't cloyingly sweet. The textures were enjoyable-the softness of the beets with the crunch of the fennel slaw, we anxiously cleaned the plate! Next came the risotto and the burger. What was enjoyable was the mushroom risotto-a refreshing presentation of toothsome Arborio, creamy yet firm, interplaying with a variety of mushrooms that immediately became one of the better risotto we've had, texturally excellent, not one note like most risotto, it came out hot but not searing; deft hands created a concoction that kept us going back for more. The burger was simple, cooked medium, but one of the best we've had in a very long time. We should qualify the burger as a cheeseburger as we were given a choice- bleu cheese or cheddar, we chose the bleu cheese and it was a good choice, just the right amount complimenting the veggies that came with burger. Oh, the fries-skinny, perfectly fried they stayed equally crunchy from first to last, served in a mini fry basket that was cute but it also showed they meant business, these fries were better than that Irish fast food place, and aren't they the iconic standard of French fries? IMO Ingredients is now the new standard. They were served with house made ketchup, excellent with or without. The ribs came last originally accompanied by a Mac and cheese but since we ordered risotto they served the ribs separately with a slaw. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone, but a little more savory than sweet , served with just enough sauce to accompany the ribs without being messy, easy enough to eat using knife and fork, the kicker was a hint of five spice, subtle enough if it's in your background, but not an annoyance if it's not. Flavorful, hearty, filling, delicious, We ended our meal with a homemade "apple pie," a creation made of thinly sliced apples, perhaps poached, with cinnamon, cardamom, allspice, along with fresh fruit, and a yummy scoop of "creamy"mango sorbet. Lots of surprising good vibes-no crust, all apple, not heavy; the mix of spices played well with each other; mango sorbet wasn't icy like sorbets tend to be, the fresh fruits added a touch of freshness to the dish that could have been sweet-centric, but not. A delicate yet satisfying end to a delicious meal. We met the chef, Sok, at the end of our meal, who had his culinary training n Kathmandu and expanded his repertoire in his world travels. He definitely knows how to elevate a good meal, and his Nepal and French influences add an understated flair to what he cooks. Sok takes tremendous pride in what he presents to the diner, evidenced by who he hires, and how each dish is presented. Dining in Ingredients is gratifying, from the dining room to the staff to the dishes themselves. More people should give Ingredients a try, a gem of a neighborhood find, a rarity in SF! We barely talked, ate like we were competing in the Olympics, and crossed the finish line by 6:55 p.m. starters and mains completely demolished. We were so proud of ourselves! Dessert arrived at 7:15 p.m. I always like to enjoy dessert with coffee, so I ordered a cold brew from another waiter. A few minutes later, our original waiter rushed over: "Cold brew takes about 10 minutes... and you'll be out of time because we need the table back by 7:30." At that point, I almost replied, "Don't worry, I'll just inhale it." The entire meal felt like a timed exam. The staff seemed stressed, robotic, and not a single smile in sight. Ironically, after we paid the bill and got up to leave... our waiter finally gave me the biggest, warmest smile of the night. Oh brother! The food was delicious, but the dining experience nearly gave me high blood pressure. Next time I'll bring a stopwatch instead of an appetite!

WHAT WE GOT: duck egg shakshuka, salmon crudo, bread & butter, tagliatelle, grilled broccoli, apricot tart PROS: good lord the flavor of some of these dishes was insanely good and you could really taste the freshness of the ingredients. my favorite of the night was probably the shakshuka, but that's just cause i'm a tomato gal and i love a good dippable dish. the grilled broccoli was also super lemony which balanced out the heaviness of the tagliatelle nicely and complimented it nicely. service was top notch, our table was literally never dirty because of how often they came by to clear things away or wipe things down. overall good experience. CONS: now ok...once again i know this is san francisco but if i'm paying $21 for a shakshuka, i'm expecting it to be at least enough food to feed maybe 4 people. imagine my surprise when this dish came out and the shakshuka was sitting in a bowl that was about the size of a candle jar lid....and like 2 pieces of bread. i'm sorry for $21????? that's criminal. as good as all the food was, NOPA felt like a one time deal for me because i quite literally can't justify the price to portion size ratio. also it was so incredibly loud in there, i could barely hear my husband talk from across the table. those tables are packed TIGHT.

I will say that this place is absolutely stunning and beautiful compared to a lot of others San Francisco rooftops that I have visited. This is located into the tenderloin, so please be aware that you will have to find your own street parking but parking a garage is preferred. This place has stunning views nonetheless, it's very chill and in a relaxing setting. The music is not overpowering, which is nice enough to have a conversation without having it overly crowded with 50 other people around you. I've definitely been back here a few times to take other friends and family and I will continue to do so. There are also heaters outside when it's very cold, chilly and windy. The staff is amazing as they are also willing to accommodate you and give you blankets if needed. Can't wait to go back!

The venue is…read morebeautiful, especially the spacious outdoor patio, which was perfect since the indoor area is a bit smaller. The DJ was spinning old-school R&B, which created an amazing vibe! The food was pretty good. The fried chicken and deviled eggs were super tasty. I'm rating this 4 stars instead of 5 due to a couple of service issues. First, their bar policy for large groups is frustrating. A guest in our party tried to order a soda at the bar but was turned away because he wasn't physically sitting at the bar counter. For large groups, people should be allowed to open separate bar tabs so they don't have to be looped into the main table bill. It feels unreasonable and cuts into the bartenders' tips. Second, our server wasn't very welcoming. While not openly rude, the cold demeanor made our diverse group feel a bit pre-judged, which was disappointing. We still ended up with a hefty bill and tipped well, but hospitality could definitely be improved. Overall, we had a great time because of the company, music, and food. I'm willing to give it another try to see if the service improves!

The seating is spacious and sectioned off rather than one large open dining room, which allows for different arrangements and a nice sense of privacy between groups. The downside is that this layout seems to leave patrons on the right side, behind the wooden partition, nearly forgotten. We were handed our menus and then left alone for almost 15 minutes without anyone circling back to take our order. When we finally did order, the servers brought dishes to the wrong table and couldn't keep track of who had ordered what. That said, the food, atmosphere, and location could easily make up for it, I would consider coming back if I had to return to San Francisco.

The 2nd visit the service was impeccable, everything went exactly as we had hoped. We will be back. We can recommend the scallops and the Salmon, the chicken was very tasty. Also, for the food, I recommend the dips and the fresh pitas, so good. We'll be back just for that. Reminds me of the old Berkeley restaurant years ago, Holy Land (IYKYK). Mmmm. Thanks!

The sandwich comes with a small dressed salad and three tomato halves. It was nice. The potatoes served with the sandwich were roasted but served cold and dry. Like they were left over from the night before. Randy enjoyed his mocha. We shared a very dry, flavorless except for the two small bits of jam in them, "cheese" danish. Definitely skip this $7 item that you could get at a circle k for $1.50 and it would taste fresher. You order when you walk in and someone delivers your order and then you're left to fend for yourself. We were able to locate some ketchup for the potatoes on our own. Nobody ever checked on us. This is the second place on this visit that's charging an extra 5% fee so that their employees can have a living wage and health insurance, which absolutely, every employee should have. With the prices they charge, they should already be able to do that, though. I read an article about this fee with many different names and I would rather pay a bit higher of a price and know the employees were taken care of than be surprised by this fee later. Two sandwich breakfasts, a mocha and a danish on top of tax and their healthy sf fee was $63. Steep for the quality we got. Won't be back.
