All of the soups are vegan and we got the yellow lentil curry soup. They also have a vegan hand pie that is vegan as well.

I popped in to check out the pastries on a Saturday afternoon and I was impressed with the easy parking and ambiance. I loved all the plants around the exterior! I ordered a cinnamon roll and slice of coconut cake. The cinnamon was great once I warmed it in the microwave. However, I was not impressed with the coconut cake. Ninth Street Bakery is probably the most rad 'established' food business in Durham- which is saying something. They've been feeding community members in need for free for years- never saying no to someone asking for a free lunch, which has only ramped up during the pandemic. Plus, to foster resilience in the community, they started a micro-grant program, raising money to give direct cash transfers to cash-strapped folks in our community who needed resources during the pandemic. I cannot rate this any higher because my experience was limited to an encounter of 5 minutes. We went to 9th Street on a Sunday morning to pick up the specialty gluten free items. There was a group of 6 ahead of us who came in for brunch. When we all reached the counter, the group of six was turned away because they were informed that the regular menu was not available and they were only serving coffee and pastries. We approached and asked for their gluten free items and we were told since they are only open six hours, they didn't have extras such as vegan options or gluten free items. As we were leaving, another group of six were coming in discussing menu items they wanted to try. So, within 10 minutes they were turning away 14 customers. This was our first encounter with this business. We sought it out based on Yelp reviews and that they offer gluten free items. What we learned is that what people seek this bakery out for is not always on offer. For some customers, such as us, their dietary needs are considered as "extras". I gave two stars because the potential is there to improve. read more

We live closer to La Farm bakery and Harvest Bread bakeries than 9 th Street Bakery . Both have good bread but Ninth Street Bakery has GREAT bread ! Our family is too small to warrant home delivery but I appreciate the fact they now offer it outside of Durham . When I eat other Bakeries' bread I feel " blah" . When I eat 9th Street Bakery bread I feel good , the way I do when I eat other healthy options rather than junk . Highly rec. their Omega 3 bread with avocado for a breakfast option at home ( we have it with turkey sausage links ) . Just now I smeared it with Good Culture Cottage Cheese and sweet carrot slices ---my goodness . Their bread could turn me into a vegetarian. Their Sunflower bread is also a tasty option . Best bread in Durham run by a bakery that cares for the community. The quality of their products is unlike any outside of Europe. I look forward to my twice weekly bread deliveries every week and I devour the fresh baguette within hours of receiving it. I also recommend their pastries and the chocolate babka is a treat! Located in downtown Durham in a large warehouse/industrial feel, this bakery/café was suggested by multiple people. The scones are huge and pillowy soft and the banana nut one I had was full of nuts and heavy with fruit flavor. The breads are beautifully displayed and have a great chew with a crusty outside. They feature traditional baguette, Italian round, along with sliced loaf breads. You can see the hustle and bustle behind the counter, nothing is hidden. Everything is freshly made on site and there is a steady stream of people both buying to-go and sitting in the café during lunch. They feature outdoor dining as well, but it largely faces a parking lot. read more

I ordered the Thai curry with bowl of brown rice already added inside. If you want your rice separately, ask for that while you are ordering. I am more used to eating my curry and rice desperately, so it was unexpected. The Thai curry was quite watery creamy and it was a vegetarian dish. Very tasty goods here and friendly people. They have a good selection of the usual sliced breads and loaves, as well as a rotating cast of esoteric breads - one of my favorite is a super-dark bread called "Starry Night." Their vegan curried hand pies are an excellent snack to have handy on a hike or bike ride (and come wrapped so that you can just chuck 'em in your bag, which is super helpful). On more than one occasion I've gone to the bakery or even just to their stall at the farmers' market near closing, and been gifted extra treats. They seem to have their goods for sale at a lot of local places - you can get the hand pies at Cocoa Cinnamon, but they're significantly cheaper at the bakery itself. read more

The bread is excellent - the sandwiches are great. We've been regulars for a few years now - loved them before Covid and especially during.

For the last 3 times that I have been here, they have screwed up my order! Today I went in and filled out a slip for Veggie and Cheese sandwich. Sounds easy enough, right? Upon arriving back at my office, I discovered the cheese part of the Veggie and Cheese was MISSING! I went back and told the cashier the woeful story and that this had been the 3rd time in a row my order was botched. I even showed her the slip I filled out. Surprisingly she explained that I had checked off some of the extras and ~~sometimes~~ they leave the cheese off because they are not sure that the customers would want that. (They also have a Vegan sandwich on the menu, Wouldn't they order that?) So I asked if someone ordered a ham and cheese sandwich and was stupid enough to ask for extras would they leave the cheese off the ham and cheese sandwich? Now she is looking at me like I asked her for anal sex and exclaimed, "A MISTAKE WAS MADE, OK?!?!" I think I will bring my lunch in next time. read more
