This place has been on my radar since it was actually on Ninth St. I love the industrial vibe & how they have made a loading dock pleasant place to hang out. I drive nearly 30 miles just to stock up on bread. My favorite in the Triangle, & omg try the chocolate whoppers! 5 stars for the baked goods! But each time I have purchased a vegetarian sandwich I am sorely disappointed with the portion size. Veggie sandwiches with hardly any veggies and this last time avocado toast with a barely there smear of avocado. I left longingly looking at other customers turkey. Serious sandwich envy. read more

If you are looking for some healthy eating at a reasonable price in the downtown area I strongly recommend this place...they have dishes ranging from a basic sandwich to some more exotic dishes and the staff is very friendly...You can also get some bread for your house at this location.. I've stopped by here a few times, but it's never really a place I think of going for lunch downtown. But after the meal I had there recently, I will always think of Ninth Street Bakery! Before, I've gotten a create-your-own veggie and cheese sandwich, and that was good, especially the bread, however, on this fall afternoon, I decided to go for the Thai Curry soup with a side of multi-grain bread and it was amazing! The bowl was huge and flavorful and so yummy, a perfect temperature and just made me feel so happy to be eating it out on the porch of the building. They have lots of things to choose from for lunch, and I actually am excited to come back here for another meal in the near future. I love the ambience of this place. To go sit and have breakfast and listen to the sound of the bakers in the back; watch as they roll out the dough and make their masterpieces. They are really good at special orders too, like I can't eat a meatball sub, so they deconstruct it for me and it's sooooo good. The soups are great too. Their biscottis are delicious! I have not yet been to the bakery shop, but I buy their products at Harris Teeter, and they are delicious. Their biscottis are some of my favourite ever tasted. They are not too hard, so will not hurt your teeth (which is an issue with many traditional biscottis), they have minimal ingredients - just enough to make them delicious, which I really appreciate. Their granola, although a bit pricey, is delicious as well. I also recommend their loaf of brioche, which toasted is perfect for a snack or breakfast (with a little jam). Will definitely have to visit the bakery store soon. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Durham for years. Lunch options there are high quality and amazingly satisfying. The patio is a really nice place to sit and eat surrounded by planters burgeoning with garden vegetables and herbs. My favorite lunch option is either the fresh made Lentil Dal bowl or the hummus and veggie sandwich on your choice of any of their fresh-baked sandwich breads. This restaurant is also incredibly community-minded, sponsoring various programs focused on feeding and serving the underprivileged in Durham. Do yourself a favor and stop by. read more

A bakery with an industrial vibe. We visited Ninth Street Bakery around 2:30 PM on a Saturday, and I'm glad we did! We got two cookies and a loaf of the Wheat Bread. They had a few cookies in the display case, but when we asked the woman working the register, she said they just pulled some fresh cookies out of the oven! (PRO TIP! Make sure to ask if they do have any fresh cookies.) We got oatmeal raisin and peanut butter chocolate and sat at the picnic tables out front. Those cookies were SO GOOD and decently priced. Great place to stop for a small treat in the summer. read more

Very accommodating to folks with food restrictions (nuts, avocado, dairy allergies) and people who intentionally limit their food intake such as VEGANS. LOUD NOISES! I arrived three hours before close, and so I think I was there around the time that they're doing some cleaning. The clanging of baking pans and tools was cacophonous; it made sitting in the cafe area, enjoying lunch and doing a little work, a bit difficult. My food was pretty enjoyable though. One of the featured soups was pumpkin curry -- the first spoonful prepped my tongue with a pumpkin base; the second introduced a little more flavor. And as I dug deeper, my tongue uncovered delicious spices. I ordered the chicken salad sandwich which was fine, but completely trumped by the bread. Sweet, soft, and delicious. Dill pickle. Lay's chips. The sandwich was absolutely fresh, but not that special. Aside from the bread... which really is the best feature of Ninth Street Bakery, in my opinion. We've long bought their loaves over at Whole Foods, and it was nice to get to see (and hear!) where the magic happens. read more

I love 9th Street Bakery. Why you ask, well the bread for one is very good especially when fresh, so fresh that it is still warm. This location does make the bread and other pastries and granola. There is a cafe here where you can go and order a sandwich to be custom built by hand with the ingredients you like. There are indoor and outdoor seating available. Thirsty? Well just order locally brewed coffee or craft beer including local craft beer in bottle or draft. They even have "Kombucha." If you are not familiar with this, it is a seasonal winter tea. If you do not want a sandwich, they also offer soups and salads. While you are waiting for you meal to arrive there are board game to play on a sofa. This place is adorable, and I can't wait to make regular visits here. I've been here only once, and it was during the COVID era of re-opening. There's a great outdoor area with tables. Inside, there aren't many walls that separate you from seeing behind the scenes, which is really cool. The employee was appropriately strict with making sure everyone was safe with having masks on, which I really appreciated. I asked for iced latte. In the setting of coffee drips/ makers not around because of COVID, I instead bought iced coffee and the associate gave me coffees cups with cream and ice inside to sort of make my own little concoction. I know one thing for sure, the Indian curry hand pies are extraordinary. And customer service, well, in this day and time, it is outrageously wonderful! Just go, close your eyes, point, and whatever you pick, it will be terrific. There are no bad choices at the Ninth Street Bakery. They have this thing called a cruffin - I probably spelled that wrong - it's a combo food, a croissant and a muffin got married and had delicious little babies. I recalled that Ninth Street Bakery really just looks like a loading dock outside. But venture inside and you can watch the bread being made. The bakery smelled amazing - the yeasty smell of cinnamon raisin bread smacked me in the face as I stepped in from the cold. I bought a huge box of pastries for my new coworkers which included almond croissants, cinnamon rolls, muffins and scones. All were fantastic although the muffins could not compare to the cinnamon rolls and croissants in my mind. Mission accomplished - I got to know more colleagues that day than any other. Berenbaum's Bakery, specializing in vegan and kosher breads and pastries, has recently purchased Ninth Street Bakery...which apparently used to be on, you guessed it, 9th Street. The new owner has stated plans to re-decorate the interior of the mostly industrial space and regularly incorporate the two running vegan pop-up restaurants of Stay Fresh and Day One on Tuesdays and Saturdays. More nights will follow based on demand. We've attended only one Stay Fresh event, and are looking forward to the expansion of another vegan dining option in the Triangle. read more

This place really expanded since i was there few months ago. Their breads are really good. I especially like the 7 grains one. Also, there are more seatings now. The sandwiches are good portion so come hungry. What I like the most is that you can make combos with savory options and a salad to go with it. This is a nice option for a light lunch. Their soups are also good; vegetarian chili was really good and not over seasoned. Their sweet pastries also looks good, even though I prefer the savory options. They also seem to have several snacks packaged, including a dog treat one. I am not sure about the dog treat because it seems to be most grains and beef stock...not much real meat at all.
