Came over the weekend of their opening week. Was really looking forward to finally another ramen choice in the flushing/bayside area instead of having to go to Astoria or Manhattan. Saw pictures on Facebook and a friend rave about how great the place was. Sorely disappointed.
We were a table of two for a late lunch on Sunday. We were seated. We sat for a good 10-15 minutes without any acknowledgement and watched the waiters attend to the new table just sitting. Despite making eye contact with multiple waiters and giving them benefit of doubt that maybe they were overwhelmed, we finally gave up and had to flag the waiter down for a menu. (-- Sorry to Howard H, we're that other table, didn't mean to interrupt you, tried to flag someone else and yours responded --). They literally gave only one menu set for the two of us and walked away without any word or explanation of the menu. No tea was offered until we flagged them, again, after they served the others around us. The other tables were slightly larger groups (4-6). Perhaps the waiters were hoping to get a larger tip out of them so they attended to them first?
Ordered the N1 tonkotsu ramen ($9?), boiled egg, and menma (bamboo), and the large order of the tonkotsu miso (n5 as miso base) ($15-18?). Sure, the broth is less greasy than other ramen spots, but that's because it's definitely less flavorful. The broth was watered down, or at least not a real slow cooked ramen broth. This is a Chinese style broth, btw. In Taiwan at least, they water down the broth significantly because they get complaints about saltiness. Japanese broth is far heavier and more flavorful. So anyway, the ramen is clearly not legit and I guess that's the demographic they're going for. The miso broth somehow had less flavor than the regular broth, which makes no sense since miso itself should be saltier. To clarify, it was more like the regular broth was just drowned in minced garlic for flavor (I love garlic btw so ok for me, but that taste stuck in my mouth for the entire day).
The boiled egg was completely hard boiled. Was hoping for a runny yolk but nope. Was also hoping they'd put it in the ramen, but no. It's served on the side, cold. Also, no flavor. The soy sauce had not penetrated the egg. So disappointing. Good portion for the menma, but again, served on the side and cold (out of a can from the supermarket, I'd assume).
The large order is double the price but the bowl is the same size. It is literally just 6 more slices of pork. The noodles were the same portion, as was the soup. Not worth it.
They were thin noodles, but not ramen noodles. More like thin egg noodles from the supermarket. Cheap noodles.
With all that being said, they do give a lot of noodles. That's maybe the only positive I can think of. Oh, and the decor is nice.
Looked forward to getting tea actually, since the name of the place is literally "Japan tea," but I just couldn't justify having to pay $6-8 for one cup of matcha tea. If its just for the experience of whisking your own tea, I don't need it. Been there, done that. Looked like the other tables had the same thought. No tea, just food at the other tables.
We once again played the waiting game for the check, as did the two other frustrated tables around us. I'm not staring at you because I find you attractive. You're not my type. The table to the side was very clearly ready to pay and go, with card in the folder at the edge of the table. If I noticed it, a waiter should have.
I understand they're new and still have kinks to work out and the very young staff have probably never worked in a restaurant before, but service was really just terrible. There were at least 4 waiters, which really is the right way to go during opening week, but having extra people on hand is completely useless if they stand around doing nothing. The guy at the register was visibly looking down at his phone while our tables waited for our checks, and the three others were chatting away at the back, near the kitchen.
I'd try again in the future after they've settled in, but this first visit really did not leave a good impression. The 3 is very generous, really only because they just opened and I'd feel bad seeing a new store get such a terrible rating in just a week. If it stays like this, that'd drop significantly and I definitely would not expect to return, nor would I expect them to stay in business very long after reading similar experiences. read more
