Unfortunately I feel that I can only give this place 1 star because. I called to make a reservation 5 days ahead of time for my birthday. Nit called and confirmed the reservation and then on the DAY of my birthday Nit called my job and told my boss that she cant accommodate me that night and is cancelling my reservation! My boss told her to call me at home and Nit said "No you can just tell her for me"! So my boss called and let me know... So we wound up going to the 5200 Restaurant at the Heritage House... It was great!!!.... Sorry that Nit did that to me because I would NEVER take a chance at making another reservation. I work in hospitality and am always being asked for dining suggestions. All of you naysayers ought to give Nit's another chance for your own sakes. While sometimes quirky and shockingly eccentric, the lovely Nit is a veritable genius in the kitchen. She does play waitress, hostess, and chef all at the same time. She's only human so yes, on occasion, she forgets an order or two. However, I would put up with a lot worse to eat the stunning and creative dishes that are prepared by this talented chef. I ordered the pineapple fried rice, which seems like a fairly predictable and unexciting entree. I asked Nit to omit the shrimp because I'm allergic, and she replaced it with a generous portion of moist, organic, marinated chicken that left me wondering what the heck she did to make it taste so good. The whole thing was served in a perfectly grilled pineapple, giving this dish a unique sweet and smokey flavor. The rice was accented by chunks of pineapple, lime wedges, toasted spices and a large sprig of fresh basil. Before I even sunk my fork in, I was delighted by Nit's bold and unconventional plating style. Everyone else at my table ordered the red curry, which was sweet, spicy, and sinfully rich but balanced expertly with the organic zucchini that had arrived only minutes before Nit started cooking. Afterwards, she surprised our table with some unbelievably sweet sloes picked from her own garden earlier that day. If you get a chance to enjoy it, Nit's vibrant personality is one of the best features of the restaurant. Nit was formerly a chef @ mousse cafe in Mendocino who ventured out to open her cafe in Ft. Bragg. So on our weekend stay in the area we decided to go for dinner. While we were waiting for our meal, which is cooked to order, we read the yelp reviews which just boosted our confidence. Then our artful, beautiful entrees arrived. Needless to say, we were very delighted with the presentation. Then after my first bite I was in heaven! There are only a few times I've been given a vegan meal that I couldn't stop raving about...this was definitely in my top 3! Service was equally great, thanks Nit. Let me start by saying that we have eaten at Nit's Cafe off and on for years. In the past the food has been awesome, the salmon, the pork, any of the curry dishes, they are just great! When people come into town this is one place we try to bring them...till last night. We roll in at about 8:15, with the music blasting in the back...no hostess. Odd, maybe she is sick or something, anyway Nit sits us and takes our order. At this point I should have picked up that something was not right for as she was talking to us she kept on walking backwards till she was talking to us from the other side of the cafe?!?!?!? OK so we got our order in finally and the music gets a little louder...great. 2 of the 3 appetizers come and are fine...that day boat scallops are a little odd but good...she had them slathered in a tarter sauce? I thought is was suppose to be a reduced wine sauce?? I could be wrong...the music was a little loud. Then at 9pm she came out and said that she is out of everything that we ordered...We ordered Chicken, a Salmon dish and Lamb....how the heck can you be out of everything??? When we pushed a little about the tomato soup that we ordered I finally looked at her and it clicked, she was stoned/high/wasted to the point where she was about to fall down. Well after getting us the bill that was about 50% larger then it should be and haggling it down to the correct amount we got out of there. I am saddened to see this happen, this was a little jewel in Fort Bragg and over the years we have recommended her Cafe 100's of times...no more. Yes, Nit is eccentric. BUT...her food is so delicious, NOTHING could hold me back from eating here whenever given the chance. I have had Thai food in LA, SF, up and down the peninsula and in the East Bay, but I have NEVER had Thai food as fresh and as flavorful as the food I have had at Nit's. Nit brought out a very, very fresh baguette and butter to start, which was so good, we had wolfed down the bread by the time our entrees arrived. I had red curry with chicken. The vegetables were cooked perfectly, juicy and fresh, in fact, the zucchini in my dish had just been harvested and delivered right after I put in my order. The chicken was amazing. Normally when I visit a run-of-the-mill Thai restaurant, the chicken in the curry comes in thin dry strips. The chicken in Nit's curry was tender and juicy, she must have marinated the chicken before even putting it into the curry. The curry itself had just the right amount of spice and was not laden with heavy cream. I wish I had had more bread to mop up the curry with when I had eaten all the vegetables and chicken. My friend ordered the pineapple fried rice and let me have a few bites. Okay, my curry was awesome, but her fried rice blew everything else out of the water. There were levels of flavor I could not identify and the freshly grilled pineapple provided a fresh explosion in my mouth to balance the savory rice. Well I love Thai food. So I found this place via Yelp. More choices here In fort Bragg than medecino I was told by a local. The reviews are true about the owner Nit being very personable. She does run all aspects of the business which is fine. The food however, was disappointing for the money. I don't mind paying more or waiting if the food is excellent. However two main problems with the restaurant is that 1) there really are not a lot of choices on the menu (which I didn't realize before I stepped in) and the menu is not very clear as in other Thai restaurants I have been to. She needs to list what is the special of the day on the door or up somewhere in the restaurant. 2) The food was ok but unfortunately, as some some reviews had mentioned, the food was not prepared as typical and it was also undercooked. Flavors were not as vibrant as I would have liked and am used to in large metropolitan areas. Note: The prices are no longer what reviews said in the past. The price for pad Thai is now 16.00 - not 25 or 22. However, nuts weren't chopped as typical and the flavor was more salty and less sweet then usual. This, however, was the best of the three dishes we ordered. The tom ka gai coconut soup had no coconut milk in it and very little ingredients and was watered down and a little bland though the portion size was bigger than normal , Thai ice tea had too much cream in it so I couldn't taste the tea but came in a huge larger than normal glass , the red curry was interesting - it wasn't like the photos at all and typically is a soupy curry. It was more like an Asian fusion curried flavored rice with no curry sauce and was smaller portion size than normal. read more

So glad we stayed! We ordered the vegetable soup, shrimp Pad Thai and both crispy and regular spring rolls - huge portions and everything was homemade to order and delicious. Wonderful! You can easily walk by and overlook this place despite it being on Main st. My husband and I received a stellar recommendation from our hotel and decided to give it a try. We walked into a tiny restaurant that was fairly empty except for one person. The owner and chef was as sweet as could be and made our meals to order. Very good food, though initially we were expecting pricing in line with a typical Thai food place (maybe with a slight Ft. Bragg premium, so we were surprised by the pricing. In fairness though the portions are huge. I wish we'd been hungrier! We had the ginormous spring rolls and cioppino (Thai style). Both were served pretty quickly, were very tasty and well presented. Unbelievably bad experience, inedible dinner. Went to this place after seeing decent reviews on Yelp and seeing an interesting menus. The owner hostess behaved very strangely when we arrived. Ordered Green Lamb Thai Curry and Crab Cakes and a bottle of Handley Saivignon Blanc. The wine arrived, she poured it without tasting. It was not what we ordered. "Handley is no longer in business" was the answer to our query. The Macfadden SB we received was mediocre at best. (we discovered later that this wine sells for $10 and Nits charged us $0! The Curry sauce tasted OK but the Lamb (Niman Ranch supposedly) was cut into huge chunks and tasteless. The Crab Cakes were literally inedible and consisted of burnt batter with little crab evident.We were the only people in the place besides a single drunk patron. We should have known. I had dinner there last evening. I'm truly a 'foodie' but was BLOWN away by this 'hole in the wall!' First, the presentation was photographable! Nit is a GEM when it comes to presentation. Taste/flavor...REMARKABLE We could hardly carry on a conversation for the ooooooooooooo and aaaahhhhhhh and mmmmmmmmmmm going on! The Spring Roll was FABULOUS Fresh, crunchy, ABUNDANT and, well, it tasted HEALTHY! Nit's accent is a bit thick-- but hey! it's a Thai place and she is Thai! I bet she feels WE have the accent! Anyway, my dining companion and I shared the spring roll--- GOOD THING! The entrees we ordered came PICTURE PERFECT and H U G E! My fresh wild salmon made that fish's soul HAPPY to be served like that! I'm SURE! My companion's ribs were OUTSTANDING--I saw them fall off the bone as he tried to cut them-- forget a knife, a SPOON would have been fine! (we ate less than 1/2 and boxed the remainders for tonight's dinner.) Finally, we shared dessert-- the ice cream was, again, presented so beautifully, it was a visual delight. (Did not finish, but did not carry left-over.. it's ICE cream, not a creamy beverage.) So..eating here is an experience RICH in so many ways... if you like food-- DO IT! Nit is trying her best to operate an entire restaurant on her own. While the attempt is admirable, the outcome is, unfortunately, not. We had a hard time explaining to Nit what we'd like. There were very few options on the menu so we picked two Pad Thai, one with chicken on the side, and one with chicken mixed into it (some of the guys were veggies). We also ordered to Salmon dishes. We were the only guests in this small place, but since the waiter was the cook and was the owner too, was the only one in the place, we waited about an hour for our dishes to start coming. The Salmon was OK, though seemed a bit two oily (fried). The steamed vegetables that came with it came without any seasoning at all, and were tasteless. The two pieces of Salmon were very small, too. The salad was very nice, but strangely it came with huge olives with a kernel so you had to be very careful not to break your teeth. Then came the free fall- apparently the cook made her life easier by cooking the Pad Thai without any chicken, and brought a whole chicken thigh (!) as a side. The Pad Thai itself seemed more like some pasta from the fridge, with some ketchup on it... :( we were greatly dissapointed. Although we were all very hungry a lot of it was left there... I must say again that I'm sorry to write this kind of review, because Nit did put a lot of effort into it, but I think that the place is just not above a threshold that can call itself a restaurant. I at at Nit's right before closing on a February Wednesday and it was killer. Nit did it all... she was hostess, server and chef. The food was superb and I was shocked to find Nit's to be perhaps the best Thai inspired food I have ever had. I must admit that the food is surprisingly expensive for the location. Must be all the disposable cash income that is generated around here. I had the Tom Kha made with pumpkin which was excellent and a Caesar which was truly superb. Last week, I had another amazing meal at Nit's, and I have to say, if only I lived closer to Ft. Bragg than my current Brooklyn locale, I'd be there once a week. The food is amazing, full stop. Fresher than fresh, all local and organic ingredients, huge portions of prawns and bouillabaisse and pad thai, and you could make a vegetarian meal on the garnishes alone. Last year, I had the bouillabaisse, my boyfriend had barbequed ribs, and they were both off the charts. This time I opted for the day boat scallops and he tried to conquer the pad thai. Even though he's a hungry 6'3", he couldn't finish off the pad thai - which meant leftovers for me the next day - I have to say I was thrilled. Nit herself is something of a wonder. She's not only the chef, she's taking orders, and greeting & seating her customers. Her tiny frame is dynamic, and her homage-to-drag-queen makeup (long false eyelashes, bright eyeshadow, lots of base) almost masks the fact that she's a very young woman cooking like a seasoned pro. You've got to see it, eat it, to believe it. But you'd better believe that as soon as I fly west again, I'll be there! read more

I think the people who give this restaurant a good review do this because they pity the owners. The owners behave very submissive and guilty as if they know the food is bad.It seems as if they try to compensate by being overly submissive. However, they do seem like nice people, but I don't go into a Restaurant to meet new people. So, I went there with another person, she ordered "red curry" and I ordered "spring rolls" . (In fact, it was a bit more complicated but I won't eleborate this part further since it would go beyond the scope of this review) The food wasn't what was decribed on the menu and it tasted bad: "RED CURRY": Red curry is supposed to be cocked with coconut milk and redcurrypaste (the main ingredients) and some other spices, which are optional. I'd say those are the basics. Also you would cook it in a wok. Furthermore, it was stated on the menu that the red-curry comes with brown rice. However, as a matter of fact she served us some random curry (not red-curry!). The meat and vegtebales were badly cocked (not grilled in a wok). And it was soaked in an overdosis of sauce and came with a little bit of white rice. The chicken was like a soupchicken and there were bones. There was no coconut milk. All together, It looked disgusting and I was afraid to eat it. Anyway I tried it and it was as bad as it looked like. "SPRING ROLLS": Spring rolls are supposed to be filled with herbs (mint and others), salad, vegetables and grilled meat rolled in a rice leave. It was written on the menue that the spring rolls (plural) come without vegetables (okay thats the freedom of the cook), with salad leaves and GRILLED chicken and HERBS. However, what I got were big overcooked NOT grilled junks of meat and giant salad leaves loosly connected by somekind of rice leave. The rice leave was socked in sweet-spicy sauce (you would ussualy serve that in a seperatle cup). It was disgusting to look at and it tasted the same way. I almost threw up (actually I threw a little up into the nepkin). It was ONE big roll WITHOUT herbs and NOT grilled. We obviously didn't finish. I wanted to stand up and show the owner how to cock (and I am not a professional cock!) - we paid them because we pitied them but actually the food wasn't worth a penny. Furthermore, they charged us less than what was written on the menu as if they new it wasn't worth that price. (Which was nice but we didn't ask them to) I hope the owner reads this and visits a cooking course or watches some cooking shows on TV, Don't go there! read more

We visited Ft Bragg a few days ago to cool off and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food at Nit's. It is just a little "hole in the wall" and we could easily have walked by. There was one other customer there at the time-a teacher treating herself to a meal after the first day of school. We ordered what the teacher had-Chicken curry with veg and oven roasted potatoes. Also a Ceasar (sp?) salad. I have worked in restaurants my whole life as a server and know good food when I taste it. It was high quality and very tasty. There was enough so that my husband and I shared (we are not real big eaters, but really there was plenty) and we got out of there for just over $20. We discovered Nit's about 4 years ago, and have been there a dozen times or so. Nit uses the freshest seasonal ingredients and puts them together in creative and delicious ways. My favorite is the Fried Jasmine Rice with Crab, but the Catch of the Day is always great. The food presentation is whimsical (in a good way), and the portions are huge. Having lived (and eaten heartily) in San Francisco for decades, I can say that Nit's food is as good as any Thai place in The City. The only downside is the ambience is, well, Spartan. Update April 2010: The food is still good (not quite as good as before), but the service has gone totally to pot. We arrived at 6 one evening recently, and the door was locked, but there were people at one table inside. The music was blaring and Nit and her employee were dancing in the small dining room. They saw us at the door but ignored us for several minutes. Then eventually opened the door. We took a seat and ordered, but the music was obnoxiously loud. So we asked for our order to go. When the order arrived, we left our half glasses of wine behind. No apologies, nothing. We've been loyal customers for years, but we're not going back. read more

My fish curry dish was overcooked dried up tiny piece of fish, the coconut curry was... meh and didn't have anything else on the menu in stock to try. Had an awful meal at Nits last night: so disappointing since just a few years ago Nit was one of the best chefs on the coast . The ambiance was depressing: half dead flowers, Nit pulling tables together minutes before opening. No servers. Rolls just ok, but the soup was mainly bland lettuce leaves in a banal coconut milk broth . We asked for the fish on the menu, was served an uninspiring breaded halibut in an awful gooey sauce ( longing for Nits delicious reduction sauces of yore!) on brown rice not the potatoes mentioned in the menu. Veggies were broccoli and boring carrots. So sad to see a once excellent jewel of a restaurant and chef now hitting bottom. Oh and no wine available. read more

Nit's is wonderful! I'm a local to the area now. My husband and I are San Francisco Bay Area transplants here so we have been exposed to really great food. Unfortunately there are not the plethora of wonderful restaurants here that there is in the Bay Area. But Nit's is one of the few. Granted we have only eaten the Thai food selections. But each one of those was a sheer delight. Yes, the prices are healthy but as another reviewer noted the portions are large. And hey, it costs these poor restaurant owners more to get stuff here. We are a bit off the beaten path up here. If you like Thai food, you won't be disappointed with Nit's. (I love the green curry.) read more

Big disappointment. There was hardly any food on my plate. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars is because I see potential for this place. However, it felt like whatever scraps were left laying around were thrown into my very expensive dishes. One piece of broccoli, 3 SLICES of carrot, a small amount of rice and irregularly cut tofu. The sauce tasted great, but there wasn't even a lunch portion. I almost had a heart attack when I received the bill. Now I want to change it to one star, but I guess 2 will do. Horrible, horrible, horrible. We went here on Christmas. Lots of customers sitting at empty tables. Nit seemed super friendly and nice, which I'm sure she is but after that it was all downhill. We ordered and then a very confused server brought pad thais to the other table and walked over. There were 4 people and he brought 2 and didn't bring the others. Then they called out to him and said, "we asked for vegan, this has egg". The people at the next table said, "we ordered pad thai with egg" so they switched plates! because the server just didn't do a damn thing. Then someone at the other table who had been waiting over an hour came up and returned his pad thai. He had asked for Pad Thai with shrimp and his had no shrimp. He paid for his drink and she asked him to pay for Pad Thai with shrimp even though his plate had no shrimp. Then our pad thai arrived. It consisted of burnt noodles, burnt tofu and mostly bean sprouts. It tasted HORRIBLE. Another couple left without waiting for their food. We did not wait for the rest of ours. Asked to pay for the Pad Thai -- couldn't eat more than two bites, it was so bad (btw, she split the one pad thai she had prepared into two orders!) and she charged up $17.50!!! Even in San Fran they don't charge 17.50 for Pad Thai in the swankiest restaurants let along a hole-in-the-wall crap place like this one. You get the story. If you have choose between going hungry and eating here, GO HUNGRY! And did I say horrible? read more
