We are visiting from out of town. This place has so many positive reviews which i don't understand how if once you enter there isn't no smell of bbq or anything being cooked. There wasn't no one there when we enter, took about two minutes before someone came from the back. The food was so bland and the food seemed like they used liquid smoke to give that bbq flavor but without actually being bbq. We order beef brisket with two sides. 0/10 Fries were so soggy or completely not edible. -1/10 Mac and cheese was bland and over cooked! I'm giving this experience 3-stars mainly for the friendly cashier who took our order. She was very nice as we were discussing the beautiful backdrop of the sunset. The meal, unfortunately, left a lot to be desired. Brisket and ribs were very tender and juicy, but no flavor at all. We had to add BBQ sauce to give it life, but that cab only do so much. The chicken had some good flavor, however. The sides weren't that much either. The cheese in the macaroni was weird, the beans were too watery, and the slaw had no flavor either. I wish the experience here was a better one, but I'm glad I checked it out because it's been on my list for a while. They got the tenderness of the meat down, but now it's all about getting some consistent flavor with their stuff. read more

While on work assignment in Fort Bragg, I noticed a BBQ place, The Q. Since I was staying overnight, I decided to check it out for dinner. The establishment is clean and has indoor and enclosed patio seating. The staff was pleasant and helpful. I decided to take my meal to go even though there was no one dinning in. I ordered a 1/2 order of brisket and a side of Mac-n-cheese. As my picture shows the portions are small ($20). I was somewhat disappointed with the lack of flavor. The brisket was tender but lacked flavor. It also lacked bark. The Mac was just there but not cheesy and savory. I added their signature "tangy" sauce but didn't really help. The Q offers oysters, ribs and chicken as part of their menu. Not sure if I'll come back for more. read more

I got the oyster sampler platter... my favorite were the jalapeño and cheese and the Cajun (not too spicy) I had the local rock fish that was perfectly cooked and the beans were amazing!! The food this year was an improvement from previous years, they have certainly improved their macaroni and cheese recipe. It is once again glorious and magical. My wife and I visited during our time on the coast, and settled here because she was feeling like barbecue. The family that operates it was very nice, and their kids (who were hanging out in the dining area) were friendly and cheerful dining companions. However, the food was a mixed bag, ranging from decent to really bad, with most items a hard mediocre. We tried the St. Louis ribs, which were flavorful, but difficult to eat, as they were served only partially cut, but with no knife. We also tried baby back pork ribs, which were fall-off-the-bone tender, and my favorite thing we got. And then there was the beef brisket... which was, unfortunately, one of the worst briskets I've ever had at a BBQ joint. It was largely flavorless, and its texture was unpleasant. The sides were also disappointing. The slaw and fry oil seemed old, and the corn bread was dry. Overall, I would say it was a disappointing meal, served up by very nice people. If you decide to give it a stab, I'd suggest avoiding the brisket at all costs - but the ribs have my cautious recommendation. read more

The oysters were very bland and gross, we felt sick after them, the clam chowder was the only thing that was alright, the mac n cheese was very grainy and SUPER oily, it was slipping all over the fork, the fries were super soggy and gross, the toast tasted like stale hamburger buns, the onion rings were very soggy, and the ranch was okay. This little place looks like a hole-in-the-wall from Hwy 1/Main Street which is absolutely deceiving. V-e-r-y small, family run (man and wife) that deserves the patronage of Fort Bragg visitors. This review is for our visit in the company of friends. My wife and friends wife both ordered the BBQ chicken to find it was great. My friend ordered a rack of pork ribs that he found to be EXCELLENT, the meat literally falling off the bones. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and fries (a side dish). Sorry to report that the sandwich was far below expectation, perhaps because every other restaurant at which I've had pulled pork literally had a large portion that was literally falling out of the sandwich. The Q sandwich had a paltry amount of meat that measured a couple of table spoons at the most. Unusual for other sandwiches I've had this one had a measure of cole slaw nearly equal to the amount of pork. The fries that came with my meal, though appearing to be crisp and freshly prepared tasted like they had been prepared in advance and then microwaved before serving resulting in them being mushy, Maybe it's just me but I like my fries crisp and hot. Bottom line: The Q deserves a visit for great ribs and chicken. They have an extensive menu with items perhaps worth trying. This place used to be really good . Clam chowder used to be reasonably priced and came with bacon crumbles and cheese on top. Now upon entering there is a sign at the register that says cheese and bacon is extra between $2.50-4.00 . A small cup of chowder was over 6 dollars and a "bowl" which is just in a slightly bigger cup was $9.50. The clam chowder was season-less, bland and luke warm. We also got their "Texas toast" which was $6.00 for a single piece of bread (barely bbqed and barely any garlic) . The soup took about 25 minutes , possibly more to come out after ordering and barely anyone was there . The ambience is decent though and the bathroom is kept clean . A single can of soda is $2.50 and a bottle of coke for my dad was almost $4.00 (small bottle) . Moral of the story, it's pretty pricey for what you're getting , but the cook seemed pretty kind. read more

The people who run the place are so nice. The food is good. Waaay back when, I think under different management, the ribs were irregular....sometimes fine, sometimes dry. The last few times I was there the ribs were really good....and tonight they were truly outstanding: PERFECTO!. I like their sauces. The mac-&-cheese is ACE. After a day of sightseeing at Glass Beach, then the Skunk Train, we decided we'd like to find a local restaurant that served oysters. We were so happy to find The Q was open and serving bbq oysters. The kids ordered their bbq oysters and fish and chips. I ordered the shrimp on the Barbie with some cornbread and onion rings. Everything was so delicious! Onion rings cooked perfectly, fish and chips were amazing. Fish is not the typical breaded type, but rather pan seared. Absolutely fantastic! My family and I went there for an early dinner and it was dead, we should have taken that as a sign but Fort Bragg kinda seems like a sleepy town so I didn't think anything of it. It took a few years of driving by this little, unassuming roadside bbq spot in Fort Bragg, but when we finally stopped to look inside it was wake-up call to not judge by appearances alone. The Q is a tiny business packing some massive flavor and good vibes. You have a pretty typical selection of smoked meat options available... chicken, beef, and pork as well as smoked & spicy sausage. And since this is North Coast, you can find some seafood options as well. Mixed plates are available for getting a taste of everything you might like. But we went for ordering by the pound. Seating is available inside, but we took our food to go: 2 lbs of pulled pork, 2 lbs of sausage, and 1 lb of chicken. Everything was super fresh, super moist, and with a perfect amount of smoky flavor that didn't mask the taste of the meats. We particularly loved the pulled pork... nice bits of char ends and fatty bits interspersed throughout the delicious shredded meat. And the sausage was juicy and similar to a spicy kielbasa. We bought some Hawaiian rolls and dill pickles and made the most delicious sliders from the pulled pork and sausage. Q has a selection of in-house sauces you can add to your meals. We loved the hot sauce which brought some heat with a nice vinegary tang. Sides are really on point as well here. We opted for the cole slaw, potato salad, and beans. All made for a great counterpoint to the smoky meats. So don't pass by this little spot right next to the Noyo Harbor entrance in Fort Bragg. Ordered a half chicken and half pork shoulder plate to go. Ordered a piece of cornbread with each as a side. She came back and said they only had one cornbread left so I substituted slaw with one order. She said it would take about 25 minutes. About an hour later I got my order and we brought it back to our camper. The pork was just okay. It didn't have much flavor so I soaked it in sauce and it was thereafyer passable. My wife opened her chicken and it was literally gray. She took a bite of chicken and a bite of cornbread and, after I tried both, she threw them away. For her to not eat chicken is saying something. The chicken was tough, dry and dense. Cornbread was a nice big piece but had no flavor at all. This was our first time eating here and I was hopeful as there were a lot of people in the restaurant. Now im not sure why. We come to town a couple times a year and hoped we'd found a new "go to" restaurant. It was a total miss. We won't be going back. The Q has always been our favorite restaurant whenever we come to visit Fort Bragg. The brisket, beef ribs and beans are the best! Tonight went horribly wrong. We ordered corn bread, vegetable skewer and clam chowder, Texas toast for our sides. We got the order to go and when we got back to our hotel we find out the left out the veggie skewer. So I went back they made it for me but then I had to return the cornbread as it was hard as a brick. It was not edible I even showed the gal behind the register that no matter how hard you pressed on it, it wouldn't break apart. So I asked for a substitute of macaroni salad which they gladly gave me. I got back to the room and was sadly disappointed with the macaroni salad it was the blandest non tasting salad I've ever ate in my life. One bite was enough to throw it in the garbage. Then not to mention the vegetable skewer was nothing special, it wasn't even seasoned just lightly grilled cauliflower, zucchini and carrots. Then the clam chowder was the absolute worst imagine watered down milk with chunks of celery no clams and no potatoes. Overall, it was a big let down. Spent $73 and only ended up eating the meat and beans. I'm not sure what happened to the quality of the food but this place used to be amazing and now it's got me thinking I need to find a new favorite spot. read more

I really hate to leave a bad review during a time like now when places are struggling, but that being said, I felt straight up scammed by how bad the food was here. It would be one thing if they accidentally messed up on our order, but they knowingly sent out extremely old, dry food. I could tell that our food was cooked a LONG time ago before we got it and had either been microwaved or sitting under heat for hours upon hours. Multiple people in our group mentioned that as you swallowed, you could feel the food slowly sliding down your throat. Yeah....it was that dry. We paid $70 for food that was so dry, even after pouring loads of BBQ sauce on it, it still was too dry to eat. Our ribs were dry as sand, the pulled pork was dry, and the clam chowder was honestly the worst soup I ever had. We kept finding clumps of odd stuff in there like uncooked flour maybe? There was one redeeming thing though, the mac and cheese was great. Everything else was terrible. Don't serve your customers food that is old. I feel scammed. This place is a true hidden gem. We were passing through while making our way north and it was recommended by the manager at our motel. I had one of the best pulled pork sandwiches I've ever had. The meat was moist and smoky and the coleslaw inside tasted fresh. My husband had the Blackened Cod and couldn't say enough about how it was perfectly spiced and not dry. Where to begin? I read the reviews so I was a bit shocked how disappointed I was. Walked in to an empty restaurant except 1 lady texting or playing on her phone, with 2 kids, sitting at a table. Here you order from a counter, pay, then pick a table and wait for them to bring your order. So we walked up to the counter to order and she walked up and asked if we were ready then got someone to help us. A girl took our order & we put a tip in the tip jar (I do NOT recommend this for multiple reason.) We go pick a table and sit in the corner by the window away from their table. We waited for a few when the counter girl walks out the front door and leaves. The lady (owner/manager?) asks if she brought our drinks? We said no, which she could obviously see since the table was completely empty. She brings over our soda in a can and bottle beer along with the sauces. While waiting for our food we noticed 2 things very disturbing, 1 the amount of food on the floor at multiple tables, for an empty restaurant I'd expect it to be clean since there's nothing else going on as far as customers, 2nd the tip that was already charged to our bill!!!! Yes you saw that right, see picture of receipt, and the tip jar that we already put a tip in at the register, see picture of the also!!! At the bottom of the receipt is a place to add an additional tip??? Ok since the girl took our order and that was the only thing, she has already been tipped TWICE and we haven't even got our drinks yet!!! While we waited there where 2 young kids running around the tables and entire restaurant (front and kitchen) playing hide and go seek, we know this not just because we saw and heard it, but the little girl told us. I walked out to my car a few minutes later to find them running around my car, in the dark, daylight savings, next to the highway!!!! These kids I'd say are between 5-7 maybe. I totally get family run businesses that's why I go to them, I grew up in one, everyday after school, but you don't allow this behavior outside or inside while people are there trying to enjoy food. In the picture of the empty restaurant you can actually see 1 of the kids, the son, coming out from behind the counter, I just noticed that as I'm righting this review and looking at the time stamp on the pictures to make sure of my accuracy. So on to the food, it took from 6:36 pm till 6:52 to get part of our order. 7:05 the rest of my order, the tacos, came out and was wrong so it had to go back. I'll say the only reason The Q received a 2 was because of his food, not many places have beef ribs and his were good, and he liked the coleslaw and beans. Mine on the hand was a 0 for the wings and 2 for the tacos. Chicken was so over cooked and dry, the meat stuck to the bone and was hard, see pictures. The tacos, 1 chicken 1 pork, 1st came out with cheese (the mistake they made), was corrected but then came out with no salsa, so it was tortilla, meat, & lettuce, no taste whatsoever. I was drowning it in the sauces just to get some taste. I was over being there so I didn't even bother to go up to the counter to ask for salsa. At this point it doesn't really matter but the sauce containers where sticky. I've worked in the restaurant industry and we never had a tip jar it wasn't that type of establishment it was a seafood restaurant, but to add a tip to a party of 2 BEFORE you are served, and to have a place for a 3rd tip before I've even received my drink is mind boggling. All in all, while we are here in town or when we come back we will not ever be going to this place again, not even for the beef ribs he had and enjoyed. Take note in the picture with the tip jar, next to it is a price list for additional charges, they charge for tap water. I need to look into this but I'm pretty sure that is illegal, not that I'd drink tap water from an establishment but a lot of places serve it without you asking. So very disappointed I was looking forward to food that wasn't seafood. read more
