Sora is my new favorite place at The Grove/Farmers Market. It feels exclusive, has great views, excellent service and delicious eats. If some guy brought me here on a date, I'd be happy! Coming from the Savta group that has another restaurant downstairs, you can trust the eats are going to be solid. I absolutely loved the Black cod miso phyllo! Like I will get it every time I'm in. The other standout for me was the salmon truffle! Fresh and just so darn good. Everything is great here but those two items were like jaw droppingly tasty. Service here is top notch and the vibes are just so great. They're on InKind! They also have Happy Hour on weekdays from 3-5pm with drink specials and $2.50 oysters. They also do a $32 lunch special in which you get 3 temakis & appetizer! Everywhere at Farmers Market is expensive, but these 3 tricks will help ya out with the prices. Keep in mind on the pricing as well, these are high quality ingredients with many being flown in from Japan!!! This ish is legit. It really is a beautiful restaurant option when in the area! Then we walked towards to host stand and the host said she's get us a seat at the bar. We sat down and the manager (?) behind the bar offered to get us drinks, so we ordered them. The server came up at that moment and offered us drinks - we said that the manager took the order and told her what they were. We ended up with double drinks (we did not get them both, just that they both were delivered). Then we waited and waited and waited to place our food order. The manager checked on us but said they didn't take orders from the bar and that the server would be with us... but it still took a long time. Once we placed the food order, it came out really fast, so that's back in the positives. Hopefully, the inefficient ordering part is just part of being a newer restaurant and the roles and responsibilities will get smoother and more seamless. Amazing experience! Love the vibe overall. Super quaint, modern and elegant, yet relaxed. Our waiter spent so much time talking us through the menu and offering recommendations. The hand rolls were fantastic! It's also a different experience because you assemble the hand rolls yourself if you are seated outside to keep the seaweed fresh. They offer a whole instruction sheet which is nice (haha) but it's really not that hard. Highlights were the red snapper, truffle salmon, albacore and scallop. Also got to try the Kumamoto red snapper sashimi and it was so fresh and melted in your mouth. Everything was delicious truly! They have a vegan hand roll menu which is cool. They also have wine and cocktail menu that looked pretty appetizing, but we didn't get drinks this visit. I would definitely recommend checking out Sora. Great spot for date night and wonderful customer service. Definitely wear your sunscreen or bring a hat if you are planning to sit on the rooftop. The weekday lunch prefix menu is a great deal. You get three appetizers and three handrolls for $32. The rooftop seating area was mostly empty when we went, so it was great being able to have the space almost to ourselves. The restaurant itself is very clean with a modern Japandi feel. (For dinner, I would recommend making a reservation as it gets very busy). I had the freshwater eel, scallops, and coconut shrimp. The scallop handroll was my favorite, but I was pleasantly surprised by the coconut shrimp. I ordered Sora off of Uber Eats and they were doing a buy one get one for their spicy salmon hand roll and their spicy tuna crispy rice, so I gave those two items a try. There's nothing super special about the salmon, the fish is OK, I do wish that it was a bit spicier, and that they didn't use the suite, Unagi sauce, and something else. I do like their crispy rice, again. The tuna was not that spicy, however, the flavors were pretty good. It also traveled fairly well, it was still pretty crispy by the time it got delivered to me. I went for dinner here with the understanding that we could order off this menu and the one fountains at their sister restaurant Savta. When we arrived they made it clear that we could do that but we had to order the majority from Sora. Sora does tiny 2 bite sushi at a high cost. Their chef is adamant about no ingredient adjustments which is unfortunate because he uses a lot of eel sauce and won't allow you to order without it. The presentation is fancy but don't come here hungry unless you're willing to put down a lot of $ for a meal. I would say there are SO many better places to check out in the area. i visited Sora months ago and I thought I made a review but it disappeared. Last visit the drinks were amazing but the food was lackluster and hard to enjoy given the plastic we needed to take off of each roll. Now they have revamped the serving style. Rolls come deconstructed with seaweed on the side. I prefer this to the plastic but at this price point creating my own roll feels wrong. I ordered 5 rolls, 1 was great, 1 salty, 1 super sweet, and 2 mediocre. Always great service and ambiance. Cute date spot. SOOO GOOD. Randomly came here during lunch and it didn't disappoint. Located above the restaurant Satva and it is front facing the parking lot of the Farmer's Market. Cute but small spot. I enjoyed being able to see the Farmer's Market clock tower from where we were sitting. Ok the hand rolls are amazing. You build it yourself. They present you with the inside of the handrolls that come on these lollipop sticks, then you place them in the crispy seaweed, take the stick out, and enjoy. My favorite ones were the TRIO (uni, caviar, toro) and the KIMEDAI with yuzu kosho. I think what really impressed me was their side of wasabi which was Kizami wasabi. It's marinated and chopped, almost pickled like wasabi, rather than the typical wasabi you get that's made from powder. Service was kind and prompt. Shoutout to Mari! A little hard to find even though it's located in the market at the Grove. The upstairs rooftop setting required several stops to ask for directions. The location info is not terribly clear. Once we got there, we realized that almost everything on the menu is a single piece of sushi. If you do the math, it adds up to quite an expensive meal, especially if you have a couple of drinks. It's a cute, slightly divey temaki sushi bar with a great vibe definitely a cool spot to impress a date. The sushi was fresh and flavorful, and the handrolls had that perfect crisp seaweed wrap. Everything tasted great, but the portions were on the smaller side and a bit pricey (they've got to pay that Grove rent somehow). Last Wednesday I went to dinner with my little sister, and it was a huge disappointment. We ordered crispy rice, miso soup, cucumber salad, and two hand rolls. One of them was a Spicy Cali hand roll, but as soon as it arrived, it smelled like spoiled fish. I took a small bite, immediately spit it out because it tasted sour and rotten, and told our server, Lissa. I then spoke with the manager, Alejandro. He told me that the hand roll would not be included on the bill. However, we were never given the check to review at the table, and I later realized they charged us for it anyway. What concerns me the most is not the charge, but that they were serving spoiled raw fish. Serving raw fish that has gone bad is a serious food safety risk and could make someone very sick. A restaurant serving raw seafood should have strict quality control. On top of that, the prices are high for the quality of food they are serving, and the food took a long time to come out. I definitely do not recommend this restaurant. It was a very disappointing experience, and I hope they take food safety more seriously to prevent this from happening to other customers. read more

A delicious, simple and unique take on sushi! Located on the outskirts of the Grove's Farmers Market, there is 1.5 hours of free parking with validation. At first we were a little confused by the location as you have to enter thru another restaurant Savta to go upstairs to get to Sora. We didn't realize they were operated by the same person/company. We went on a Friday afternoon and it wasn't crowded. We were able to sit outside and enjoy the fresh air. They also have some seating inside. Our server was really nice and friendly and the food came out fairly quickly. We are not a huge fan of raw fish so we ordered the eggplant, potato croquet , tofu, Cali and smoked salmon hand rolls. All of the rolls we had were delicious! The flavors were on point and everything tasted so fresh. Loved that they have vegetarian options. I took my partner here to celebrate pre-Valentine's Day and our experience here was absolutely incredible! Food: 10/10! My partner and I started with 3 temakis each, but actually went for a second round as it was so delicious. The highlights for me were the Toro truffle & Red snapper! The other servers were also very kind and checking in on us to make sure my partner and I were alright and were on top of taking care of dirty dishes. At the end of the day, my partner and I confirmed that the service here was the best we've had in a very long time dining out. It's a cute rooftop handroll bar nestled in the outer corner of the farmers market at The Grove. It's nice that they validate parking if you park at the lot (not the garage parking). We came for a late lunch on Saturday and luckily it wasn't busy so they were able to accommodate our larger party with no wait. Service was friendly and vibes were good. Our server gave us a tutorial on how to form the handroll since the seaweed comes separately for freshness. The fish was fresh and everything comes pre seasoned so there's no sauces to add. The rice was different than your typical sushi rice but it was complementary to the fish! My favorite was the Toro Truffle Jalapeño temaki but the Kumamoto Red Snapper was a close second. The temaki was smaller than I expected (size is roughly a loaded nigiri). The crispy rice tuna was good but one of the pieces was a little more toasted than the others. We ordered those to share amongst the table so the uneven doneness was noticeable. Truly a great hidden gem of the original farmer's market! I've been wanting to come here since I've seen videos of the spot online. I'm a huge sushi fan and a sucker for hand rolls so it was only right to come to this rooftop hand roll experience. We went on an empty day so it was nice to see the restaurant for itself without many customers. We sat at the bar and it's always fun to watch the chefs at work. The restaurant is very pretty and has a sleek and modern look to it. I really like the relaxing vibes it gives off. The service was great! There was always someone in close distance incase we needed anything or any refills on our drinks. We placed our orders in for a variety of the hand rolls and the great part about sitting at the bar, is that it's delivered right to you from the chef. Every single one just melted in my mouth. Sora is located on the second floor, above Savta, in the farmers market area of The Grove. It's on the exterior corner, facing 3rd and Fairfax. The handroll bar area is small and intimate, which I like. There's also outdoor patio seating, but I enjoy getting the handrolls directly from the chefs behind the bar. We were seated immediately and our server, Angel, was super attentive and had such great energy! My friend and I ordered everything to share: We started with the yellowtail sashimi jalapeño ponzu appetizer, which is a crudo type of situation. I loved yellowtail's slightly sweet and buttery flavor, paired with the citrus in the ponzu and textural variety of the jalapeño. A very tasty dish. 9/10. The first handroll was the shizuoka salmon truffle signature temaki. You could really taste the truffle. 8/10. The seared toro signature temaki was good too. It was served with soy sauce, yuzu paste, and garlic chips. The yuzu flavor cut through the fattiness of the toro very nicely. 8.5/10. We also got the black cod miso signature temaki (came with eel sauce and phyllo). Love a miso and black cod dish. It was warm, buttery, and flavorful. So good! 9/10. We tried the toro truffle jalapeño signature temaki as well, which comes with cucumber, cilantro, truffle oil, and wasabi. This one was really good. The toro and truffle oil were fatty and rich, and the cucumber and cilantro added freshness and brightened up the overall. 9/10. The scallops signature temaki (with ponzu, masago, toasted panko, eel). Super fresh. The masago and toasted panko added some nice texture and the ponzu added a light zest. 8/10. I've been checking out a lot of handroll spots throughout Los Angeles, and I like to compare everything to Kazunori as a baseline (warm rice, fresh fish, simple and classic handrolls). But I do enjoy more adventurous pairings and flavors. Sora has the classic temakis like salmon, tuna, and yellowtail, but they're generally spruced up a bit with a bit of an extra something (jalapeño, crispy shallots, eel sauce, crispy onion, etc.), which I like. They also have more interesting items like The Trio (Santa Barbara uni, toro, and caviar) that I would love to try next time. They don't do set menus like a lot of other handroll places, but a la carte gives more freedom for options. Overall, a great experience. Amazing experience with an outstanding meal... Obviously heard about this place from social media. which didn't even know that there was a restaurant here let alone a new sushi place. We came for a late lunch which also happened to be happy hour. It's located at the farmers market just above the Starbucks. There's another restaurant downstairs which also shares the same bar and restroom. I believe they have a different menu. Once upstairs, we sat on the patio that overlooks out to the street. They also have outside bar seating, inside dining seating and there's also the actual bar counter. It was nice out so we opted for the patio. Menu is pretty much plain and to the point. They have a few starters and the rest is temaki. Also as it was happy hour, cocktail was 11.00 and oyster was 2.50 a piece. Started off with the crispy rice and spicy tuna. A popular item as told. The yellow tail sashimi and a cucumber salad. And half dozen of oyster. Everything was excellent, sashimi was perfectly seasoned with the sauce. Crispy rice, perfect crunch on the outside and soft rice on the inside. Oyster was excellent with the mignonette sauce. Starters alone were excellent and that was just the beginning. Also cocktail, the espresso martini was a hit as well As Paloma and a glass of prosecco. Second round, with the lychees martini, another excellent choice. Mains, a selections of temaki. Everything that was had was all excellent. Presentation was great. Simply place on the wooden tray with plastic wrap. They even have instructions on how to remove the wrapper. Top contender, spicy lobster, albacore, red snapper, blue fin tuna, black cod, and toro truffles to name a few. Basically everything we ordered. Just enough fish with rice on the seaweed. One or two bites and that is it. But worth every single bite. It's an easy eat which they recommend 3 to 5 piece per person. A second round of temaki was needed. Everything is a la carte but they did have a trio on the menu. Food was excellent and the fish was very fresh. Service was great. Friendly staff which makes its memorable. This is a rooftop temaki hand roll spot near the farmers market at The Grove. It's tucked away in a corner spot on top of Savte, the pizza shop. Can be harder to find as at eye level you see the pizza first. It looks like you can order pizza from downstairs and they will bring it up, and vice versa they can send hand rolls downstairs as well. I didn't find that out until the end of the meal but wanted to try their hand rolls. I would say that the rolls are extremely fresh and good, but definitely not as filling to me, and the price point might be a bit higher than a hand roll spot that serves a fixed set. They had some cool and unique flavors like a sea bass, snapper, and another hand roll with olive oil. The hand rolls are served in a plastic to preserve the seaweed which keeps it from getting soggy. I usually eat my hand rolls one at a time so the plastic wouldn't be necessary based on other restaurants I frequent so this seemed a bit excessive to me. The service was fair and we were well attended for with our party of 5. This is a great place overall to hang out and go shopping (The Grove), and a place I would consider going back to for a very special occasion since this is a more pricey food option. read more

It was hard to find this spot for us, but the place is located on the 2nd floor on top Savta at the Farmer's Market (next to Starbucks). You enter by going up the stairs through Savta. You get validation afterwards, but heads up that this validation won't work for the Grove structure parking! We weren't sure how their system worked so we sat ourselves since we did not see any waiters attend to us while we were waiting downstairs (even though we saw one just staring and smiling at us). We were told we needed reservations, but they let us sit anyway since it was almost empty. Most of the 2 seater round tables were tiny, and it felt overwhelming as soon as I sat since there were too many unnecessary things on the table (as you can see from the picture). Please change this :( Our server was really nice and welcoming, and gave us a heads up that the most people get 3-5 temaki and each is around 2 bites. The food was light, delicious, and refreshing- I had 5 temakis: shizouka salmon, everything smoked salmon, tuna, tuna poke, kumamoto yellowtail jalapeno while friend got everything smoked salmon and scallops. The only thing about the temakis is the plastic wrap- while I understand that the purpose may be to keep the seaweed fresh and crispy, it was unnecessary and bothersome. Customers are already ready to eat the tiny temakis so having to unwrap it with the likeliness of the whole thing falling apart is inconvenient. I really wish they would change this. Nice little rooftop spot not a ton of ambience! A pretty pleasant staff. The chef makes absolutely no substitutions so if you have allergies, this is not the place to go. If you have dislikes, the chef prefers you to taste things as he has prepared them perfect for your pallet so again if you don't like eel sauce or wasabi, and the roll comes with that on it, they will not remove it. The cinnamon salad is the blandest in the city not a fan. The spicy tuna crispy rice was one of the best! Overall, you'll have to try it to make your own decision. It's more like 4.75 stars. This place is great! Located on the south west side of the Grove and upstairs to another restaurant that starts with an S next to Dupar's, this place has a resort-y type aesthetic and feel with indoor and outdoor seating. We sat at the cocktail bar and most of the staff told us their favorites before ordering. We had tons of their Temaki rolls including the toro truffle jalapeño, coconut shrimp, baked crab, spicy bluefin and so much more! Plus we also had apps of spicy tuna on crispy rice and the newly added yellowtail jalapeño. Taking off the tiniest .25 star only because the plastic wrap they put on each roll when served not at their bar seems excessive and it seemed like one of the servers kept forgetting to put in our orders so we had to wait a little longer for a few rounds than we would have liked but that's only because each dish was so tasty good! This is a good place to get your temaki fix. The restaurant is in second floor with rooftop and indoor bar vibes. It's very inviting and perfect hangout place with friends. Service is great, from checking in at lower floor to escorting you to your table. They explain everything to us. Your temaki will be made one by one and if you are seated by the bar, they will give you a stand where they will put your order. It's all made fresh and refreshingly delicious! I've ordered the Trio, which is fusion of toro, Hokkaido uni and caviar, it was melt in your mouth experience! Next one that I like is the Toro Truffle Jalapeño, you can taste the truffle and the tuna is so good! Note that this could get expensive. read more
