My husband has loved this restaurant for ages, but he usually goes for lunch. I finally joined him for dinner and promptly fell in love. So far, this is the best ramen I've found in South Bend. I ordered the Nom Nom Ramyum which was delicious. It's a mix of a Tom Yum and Tonkotsu broth (which is also great ramen) that is spicy and creamy and so delicious. The spring rolls are good, but I'm partial to the spicy roll (deep fried spring roll wrapped with veggies and rice paper). There's also a beautiful hand painted mural inside. First time visit and my immediate impression was the place did not look clean. We were greeted right away and given menus. We decided to split a couple of appetizers as well as the main meal. We picked two appetizers, both of which they were out of, although this was not previous mentioned. We then substituted with the spring rolls and they were fresh and the peanut sauce was delicious. This will be an unusual review for me in that I haven't physically set foot inside the restaurant, and normally I discuss seating, cleanliness, and masking. I ordered the chicken pho on three separate occasions over the course of two weeks, and others with me variously had the massaman curry and bahn mi sandwich. We all agreed that the food was good, but not great, and so the average three-star rating. Both times I ordered the pho in regular size, it came with a single basil leaf and single sprig of cilantro. The supersize pho had double that (two). Although the amount of noodles was appropriate, my point is that the fixings were sparse, so it was less tasty than it could be. We were hard-pressed to find peanuts in the massaman curry, and the amount of beef on the bahn mi could have been more generous. So, all told, our impression is of good food that could be more flavorful with more abundant ingredients. In fairness, we did not request extra fixings for the second or third order, so it's possible those would be provided on request? I stopped into Nom Nom on a very chilly Friday afternoon, looking for something to warm up my belly. I found it! Nom Nom is a cute downtown gem that offers both Thai and Vietnamese food. I was slightly confused by this. I mean, the countries are close, but the food is so different. Anyhoo, I grabbed Vietnamese coffee, gyoza, and the ramen special. My only complaint (and reason for taking them down a star) is that everything seemed to be turned down a notch. Traditional Vietnamese coffee is made with condensed milk and coffee that will knock your socks off. It's sweet and strong. This was watered down. I ordered spicy broth, this was flavorful, but not at all spicy. I just expected a little more umph. Service was great. I met Chuck, the GM. The lady who waited on our table provided good service. The wait on the food was longer than I had excepted. It took almost 30 minutes for us to start receiving our appetizers, which trickled in. Since it is a pho place I was surprised that our soups came out last. I ordered the tofu pho and bahn mi tofu. They lacked flavor in both my options. The broth was warm and not hot. I did tell the manager that he didn't have to do that I was already full, but he insisted. He felt bad that I didn't like my food. That dish was very flavorful; ramen veggie noodles. The noodles were cooked to perfection . We were surprised that the manager brought out cinnamon crepes for us to try which tasted really good. Just for these noodles and the other food I will not write off Nom Nom Pho completely. The thing is, we went to eat there for the pho noodle soup and left disappointed. I shared my disappointment with the manager. I told him "the pho soup is the star of your restaurant, but you did not deliver as I expected". So when I critique my Vietnamese food I know what I'm talking about. I have had really good pho soup in Orange County California where there is a very big Vietnamese community. I have eaten Vietnamese food for many years. So I write this review with a heavy heart, but I must be truthful to my experience. Nom nom pho is a casual spot offering really yummy and affordable food. We started with the shrimp spring rolls, which were tasty and came with a flavorful peanut sauce, but could have had a few more shrimp. However, for just under $5, it was a good value. For my entree I had the nom nom beef pho, which is the beef pho with all three of the beef options included. My favorite was the beef balls, but having all three was a nice sampler! Nom Nom Pho is some of the best Southeast Asian cuisine in the South Bend area. Their pho is no-frills but incredibly flavorful and satisfying. The appetizers are very good as well, specifically the spring rolls and edamame (try the chili sauce!).
