The moment I walked in and saw all the Aunties cooking and prepping bánh mì, I already knew I was about to get some authentic Vietnamese deliciousness. I ordered the beef pho and let me tell you--it HIT THE SPOT. For a place known for sandwiches, I'm not gonna lie, my expectations for the pho weren't that high. And being Vietnamese myself, I can definitely be a tougher critic when it comes to Vietnamese food. But this did not disappoint! I'm not sure if he was the owner, but Thai was incredibly welcoming and greeted every person who came in so warmly. You could immediately tell how many regulars they have, and I can see why. It honestly made me smile because it reminded me of something I love about our culture: it's not just about blessing people with amazing food. There's so much heart, hard work, and care behind it--and food has always been one of the ways we build community and make people feel welcomed. But Taba Taba uses quality meat and a more sophisticated orange peel sauce. You can see/find the dried orange peel within the sauce which gives it a more complex flavor. I really liked it. The chow mein was good too - not oily at all. The service was friendly and great too. The woman who served us was friendly and really really attentive to all tables, looking around to see what was needed, making sure everyone was doing OK, whether water needed to be refilled, picking up the check as soon as the credit card was put down on the check. A real care factor above and beyond what you normally find. She chatted with my wife too for a bit on our way out - friendly and warm. I usually don't make a point of saying, "The food is really good here", but I felt compelled to. I know that Chinese food restaurants, the vast majority, do cater to American tastes, so the food isn't strictly "authentic" - just a reality of who the audience is. But even so, this was done at an elevated level that satisfies the American taste, while adding some richness/subtlety to the flavors that makes it better than your typical Chinese restaurant. I loved the chow mein, and the beef with green beans, eggplant, and General's chicken were all really good. The war wonton soup wasn't exactly like the one I'm used to, but it was still better than a lot that I've had and very flavorful. The only thing that really didn't live up was the fried rice. Fried rice oil had leaked into the outer plastic container. By the time we noticed, most of the fried rice had already been eaten. We searched for the missing plastic piece but couldn't find it anywhere. Because we couldn't rule out the possibility that it had ended up in the food, we threw away the remaining fried rice. The kids had been excited about the meal, but instead we were left worried about what they might have eaten. A damaged container with a missing piece should never be used for hot takeout food. I hope the restaurant pays closer attention to the condition of its containers, as this is a serious food safety issue.
