I went to Nonna Dona's with my father and step mom. I had some of the best Italian food that I have ever had. The baked eggplant parmigiana appetizer was spectacular. The cheese, the sauce, it was an indescribably delicious experience. The fried calamari was cooked to perfection. The arugula salad was a perfect complement to these other outstanding dishes. Our drinks, a mai tai and a mocktail, were superb. We all shared three pasta dishes and we couldn't get over how each one was better than the other. We had a tiramisu and a chocolate cake to top off the whole wonderful experience. This is a restaurant I hope to go back to again and again. read more

The place has a colorful diner type vibe, but it's more upscale than that with two sections, ample seating and a nice bar.Nocala the owner greeted us and was very friendly we had no reservation on a Friday night but he got us a table but decided to eat at the bar and Melissa the bartender was great. Started with the Barada, which was very fresh and delicious and the Hamachi Crudo also simple but tasty the baked Bronzino was filleted and full of flavor as was the pasta with rabbit Ragu, the tiramisu could have a touch more Kahlúa, but also on point as was the wine we will be back. read more

Such a strange and awkward experience. From sitting down the waiter immediately came over and ask for our entire order. We asked for five minutes and he seemed irritated at us for asking. The first thing we noticed was that this was anything but an Italian restaurant. It's all smoke and mirrors. The ambiance more reflected a Johnny Rockets in an airport. Drinks came out quickly but the diet coke was the most flat i've ever tasted. Was like syrup it was so flat. We ordered the meatballs and mini calzones for apps. The meatballs were crumbly and mushy. The sauce was okay. The calzones were basically a fair food. Deep fried bread that instantly deflated, yes, deflated when we cut into them to expose maybe half a teaspoon of sauce and mozzarella. A shocking amount for the price. So both appetizers fell flat. But the pasta was the main thing we came for so we held strong. We ordered the Ravioli per Olivia which was the best thing we ordered but still seriously unimpressed for the price. We could have had the same quality pasta and sauce at home from the grocery store. The second dish is not listed online for some reason but it was a fettuccini dish with seafood + red sauce. We both took one bite and were overcome with the most sour fishy taste we have ever had. We both love seafood but were immediately turned off at the flavor, which leads us to believe the crustacean they served with the pasta was not fresh. We sent that dish back and the entire experience with the server was very awkward, again, it seemed like he was irritated with us. Before bringing the check that we requested they dropped a blueberry cheesecake to make amends. I'm happy they realized our experience was not going as expected but I took one bite of the cheesecake and it tasted like black licorice and crumbled like blue cheese in my mouth. The manager brought us the check and it was a very awkward and silent moment of departure. We put a lot of research into where we go out to eat. We travel for work and love dining at restaurants that catch our eye. We both consider this to be the worst dining experience we have had anywhere in the city. read more

This restaurant is receiving one star, and one star only, because the meatballs and crab-stuffed pasta were prepared well (kudos to the chef). Unfortunately, the overall experience was deeply uncomfortable. The owner walked around the otherwise empty restaurant loudly yelling on the phone, presumably to vendors, and was not welcoming in the slightest. It was a Tuesday afternoon and the restaurant was nearly empty aside from my friend and me, plus one older man seated in the back. At one point, the owner began a loud political conversation with that guest and openly expressed racist views, including stating that Black people should not be admitted to Harvard because of the color of their skin and that "tests" should determine who belongs there. The other guest attempted to challenge him, but at that point I just wanted to leave. I never expected to write a review like this, but I strongly suggest skipping this restaurant altogether. I had a great Saturday night dinner here with my friends! The restaurant was quaint and the staff super friendly. It wasn't completely full but I'm not a big fan of having no music so that you can hear all of the other table's conversations. I ordered the Malloreddus with our waitress' suggestion and the saffron sauce and sausage were delicious! I tried my friends' paparadelle del ristoro (good but the boar was too chewy for me) and cappelletti (also good!) but mine was my favorite! But my friend who also ordered the malloreddus liked the cappelletti better. The pasta was definitely al dente with a bite but delicious! I then had the tiramisu for dessert (9/10) great tiramisu but had a little too much cocoa powder on the top and I tried the panzerotti dolci (delicious!) read more

Visited Nonna Dora's for a rare date night. This is a new restaurant at this location, very close to transit. Were welcomed upon entering and on our way to our table by all staff, which was very nice. I love places that take great customer service to heart. Server came to us promptly, provided menu and told us of the specials. We ordered the pappardelle and spaghetti, arrived hot, perfectly al dente, and flavorful. You can actually taste it's freshness. Server and staff checked on us often and we're very friendly. For dessert we enjoyed both the Panna cotta and the Semifreddo. Not large portions but enough to give your sweet tooth satisfaction. I love Nonna Dora's in Kips Bay, though it's hard and annoying to go to Kips Bay and the OG Nonna Dora's there is always full, honestly it's hard to get a seat! When I heard they were opening in Tribeca I was quite excited because this very much hits the spot with what you would want in Tribeca. Nonna Dora's makes great pasta and great cocktails. Some of the best cocktails in the city (especially when Luca is there), and some of the best pasta in the city. If you can I'd try to find a way to get as many pastas and cocktails as you possibly can while you're there. The apps are good, and the crudos and anchovies are all light, which is nice if you're trying to eat pasta, which trust me you want to do. If I'm only getting one pasta, I'm getting Olivia's Ravioli named after the owner's youngest daughter, this pistachio pesto ravioli is just the best. I kid you not I made sure I could eat this on my wedding day. I would eat multiple orders of this, but you'll have to pry yourself away and try something else too, if given the choice of next pasta I choose the lasagna. I love Lasagna and after having Olivia's ravioli it's nice to have something meaty. The carbonara is just also so good, and with rigatonis as the shapes that's quite a treat you don't usually get. The cappelleti also so tasty and cheesy. I know a lot of people like the Malloredus, but it's not for me. The ambiance is not that different from uptown, it's a little less homey and more of a Tribeca Italian kitchen vibe. Truly the spot you want to drop by with your kids for saturday brunch or you want to leave your kids at home for a quick date night....we're not talking L'Abeille vibes here, we're talking good italian food that isn't the Italian-American tourist stuff you're going to eat in midtown, or the sorority girl spots of the West Village. read more

Casual spot for great pasta! Overall ambiance was not my favorite for dinner. The lighting is cool toned and harsh which makes you feel like you are in a hospital. Not the most calming or pleasant dinner experience. However, the actual pasta is fresh, delicious, and al dente! I would definitely return for lunch- I think the lighting would be better when it is light outside (me and my friends came for dinner). We started out with the focaccia and the Barbera d'Alba red. Focaccia was fine- a bit too crisp for my taste and a tad on the dry side. The red was very nice and paired well with our pasta. I am partial to whites and don't love tannin- this red was light on tannin. For mains we ordered the rigatoni carbonara, Maccheroncini Grano Arso, Cappelletti, and the gnocchi w red sauce. All the pastas were delicious! I was a bit underwhelmed by the Maccheroncini and pleasantly surprised by the gnocchi. Although, you really can't go wrong with any of these! Pastas were great! I think this would be a better spot for a casual lunch though as opposed to a dinner. read more

I've been wanting to try Nonna Dora's so I was happy that they opened a second location in Tribeca. We came at opening time so there was no wait. The restaurant is spacious and clean. Very attentive staff. We started with the famous meatballs. The texture and flavor was on point. The orecchiette in rabbit ragu was very good. The noodles were cooked a little al dente as it should be. The meat was very tender and flavorful. The lasagna was one of the best I've had. We ended the meal with mini calzones stuffed with Nutella which was perfect. I loved balance of the crispy outside shell with the softness and sweetness of the Nutella inside. Made a reservation on Resy that changed the date on me so I ended up missing that dinner. Got charged $25/pp. tried calling 10 times but no one ever answers the phone; finally left a vmail as well as an online email through their contact page. NO ONE ever responded to me. So I finally went in person to speak to them - as I WAS planning on joining them for dinner again on the correct date. I was berated so badly, told they didn't have to answer a phone or respond to messages. What restaurant behaves this way? Too good to not respond to messages? SO INCREDIBLY RUDE. My wife and I have lived in Tribeca for over 50-years. We do have a soft spot for restaurants. It's a very tough job. Because of our first visit to Nonna Dora's we will NEVER return. I truly wish that owners would realize how important first impressions are. When you walk in to an empty place and are told that the only chairs that are available are at the BAR. You say no thank you and leave. We of course find another and revisit to see it is still empty. I get it there may have been an unheard of cancellations. Unfortunately, our meal was ruined as soon as we were rushed out the door. Without any warning one of the managers walked to our table, clapped his hands and said "when it's time to go it's time to go." I looked around to see many open tables around ours. We were shocked! After paying such a steep bill, that lack of hospitality was really disappointing. I've never left a review before, but this time it felt necessary. I've been a long-time customer at the East 30s location, but have only eaten here once. My rating is probably one star higher for this spot because of that relationship than it otherwise would be. My friend and I each had a tasting menu, but different ones. I had the seafood pasta tasting and my friend had the vegetarian tasting. She made the better choice. I like seafood a lot in general, but I found the options in the tasting to be generally far fishier than I prefer. Don't get me wrong, I ate everything, but we each tasted each dish of each other's and I liked hers better. Of both tastings, our favorites were the ravioli with pistachio sauce and tagliatelle with mushrooms, both from the vegetarian menu. I had the semifreddo for dessert and it was yummy and rich as usual. The ambiance here seemed a bit more modern and maybe impersonal than the ambiance at the original location. Service was fine. Maybe a bit fast, but on this particular night, that worked out well for us, since we had time to get to a movie afterwards, which we had not thought we'd be able to attend. read more

I have obviously never had real Italian food even when in Italy. My (now obsolete) joke is that Italian and Mexican food are just the same four ingredients, just presented in different forms. How wrong I was proven at Nonna Dora's Tribeca. As a final meal on my vacation, I was wanting to try Italian food in New York City, and found this restaurant after an internet search for 'best new restaurants in New York.' We were only a few blocks away, so headed over to put our name on the reservation list, as I didn't want to put my credit card info into Resy. When we inquired, the host directed us to use Resy, but the owner told us to just show up at dinner time and there wouldn't be a problem getting a table. Before the dinner service, we really got a kick out of watching Nonna Dora in the front window making orrchiette with a knife, along with another lady hand rolling little bits of pasta along a grooved board. When it was dinnertime, we were seated right away. The atmosphere is that of a cute, friendly Italian diner. The menu is extensive! Everything sounded delicious and the restaurant made it easy to try several dishes with their tasting menu. Our server described the portions as being 'very small,' but by the time we got to the final course, we were quite satiated. We started with foccacio, which as others have mentioned, is on the crispy side, but that is what I prefer, as I don't like to eat doughy bread. Unfortunately, if you want olive oil for dipping, that's an extra charge, which was a little disappointing. Next up were the first two dishes, gnudi in a green sauce and cappelletti with tomatoes and guanciale. Both dishes were delicious, light, and not greasy. A perfect introduction to the style of cooking here. The second round of dishes were orecchiette with rabbit ragu and macceroncini with duck. Both dishes were again presented in a light sauce which perfectly coated the pasta but allowed the flavors of the protien and vegetable to shine. But, the masterpiece was the smoky flavor of the maccheroncini. I don't know how they 'burned' the pasta so evenly and delicately, but it had a wonderful subtle smokiness to it which was perfectly balanced against the fresh flavor of the peas. Finally, the malloreddus that we had seen being made in the window, was presented as the final course. The chewy texture of the pasta was what I have always dreamed about when I imagine 'real' Italian pasta and it didn't disappoint. The flavor of the finely ground sausage was intense and a bit salty, cancelling out the saffron, however. It was enjoyable, but left me feeling very thirsty. I was delighted when the owner sat down next to our table and described the origins and development of their recipes. Personal interaction is always fun and I enjoyed learning his story. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant if you want to try pasta that has authentic origins with modern flavor influences. read more

Food was fine - small portions for the prices, which I usually understand but this was really a bit skimpy. The apps were very overpriced. The part that really fuels the meh review was that our table of four was sat and finished up in 90 minutes, and the whole staff was eyeing us down and pushing us out. They put on their resy 120 minutes for groups of 4+. We were waiting for one person to come back from the bathroom to leave when our waiter had what seemed to be the manager come over and say "are we ready?" Came for the two-night only "Ristorante de Cinghiale." The food was amazing-- apparently more meat focused than the standard menu, with excellent wine pairings. The peppery "new olive oil" and boar ragu over pappardelle were both standouts. Really appreciated the attentive service and intimate atmosphere. Went tonight with 2 young kids. Value for money is very low. At $36, even in NY, expect a little more than a small piece of lobster on homemade pasta with tomato sauce. The dish was under salted and lobster was overcooked. The kale salad is literally a handful of baby kale with light dressing and pine nuts for $20. Also some of the kale was wilted. We ate it because we had to feed 2 young kids otherwise would've complained. Would've taken too long to properly complain. The food is mediocre at best. The Negroni, however, was fantastic. Service was decent but the waiter kept coming over and asking us to order. When we said we didn't want something he recommended he seemed frustrated. He was nice though, but didn't really know the menu. Ambiance is quite nice. Overall, extremely over priced and despite having hand made pasta, a lot of other fantastic Italian spots in NY and in the area. read more
