Friday evening dinner. Sat upstairs and it was hot and sticky with this heatwave. Server was nice enough. Not much interaction in terms of service besides are you ready and can I take your order. Had to ask a couple times for the same request. Back server was very good. Cocktails here are good. But, drinks take forever. Fifteen plus minutes for a few cocktails was a bit long. Second round took even longer. In the middle of the wait for cocktails we ordered one glass of wine which came fast but sadly still waiting for the cocktails. Food was very good. No timing issues. Baked giant beans and the fried rockfish was hot and delicious. Fried chicken was very very hot and very flavorful with a wonderful rosemary essence. Cheeseburger was good with fries. Tagliatelle with bolognese was also tasty and flavorful. More bolognese than noodles really. It had been several years since returning to NOPA. We came here on a Tuesday night and it was hard to get a reservation the week before. We got a 5:30, which is when they open and were running late and couldn't find parking. No worries as they held our table for about 15 minutes. We were right at the top of the stairs on the side without a view of the downstairs. No worries though as the vibe was on point and high energy. It is a relatively small menu and we went straight for the entrees. I had the tagliatelle. It was basic, but so high quality. The 9 hour cook of the bolognese could be felt as the sauce felt so soft and effortless. The braised green made it feel somewhat healthy and the parmasen was the right amount. Went to Nopa a month or so ago and came away very satisfied with the meal. We ordered a few appetizers to start. (1) category redefining cornbread which paired really nicely with the fattiness of the pork belly, (2) fried fish tenders which were super crispy yet still felt light, and (3) fries which were very solid but nothing to write home about. For the main, we ordered the duck. The sleeper of this dish were the caramelized carrots, my relationship with my girlfriend was seriously tested when we were down to one last one on the plate. The outdoor seating was warm and shielded but a bit tight and tables were placed close to each other. Service was fine. We ordered the fried fish, goat cheese, tagliatelle, and duck leg to share. Been hearing great things about NOPA for many years as a SF staple restaurant. Finally, came by to have dinner. We found street parking a block up by Alamo Square pretty easily. We got seated upstairs with great views looking down of the bar, dining area and kitchen. As their website says, their dinner menu changes daily. We found that all the dishes had Mediterranean influences and that was confirmed by what I later read on their website. There are a few staples that don't change - like the pork chop, hamburger, wood baked beans and flatbread dish. For the entree ordered the pork chop, which was delicious. Moist, juicy. Not dry. Very nice dish. Paired well with the strawberry sauce it came with. For the small dishes ordered the stracciatella and the lamb meatballs. The lamb meatballs were collectively our least favorite dish but a part of this is personal preference (one friend who accompanied me does not like the gamey flavor of lamb much). Even though it is mixed in with several ingredients, you still can't forget it's lamb. For me, I thought the sauce left something to be desired. The meatballs were dry without the sauce, but the sauce needed more flavor. The only flavor that showed through for me in the sauce was the garlic, which just didn't add much. The stracciatella was heavenly. Service is efficient and timely, as they're quite busy there. We didn't feel rushed but also didn't feel too waited on, which was nice. Food came quickly. It can get loud in there. Last time I was here, I appreciated sitting on the second floor area because of this. Spent about $120 once tip was added for 1 large dish and 2 small dishes. We got a variety of dishes, including the crudo, french fries, pasta bolognese, and pork chop. The crudo was the most interesting of the bunch and came out quickly, but from there, things went downhill. Maybe it was because of the CSP deal, but we didn't get our entrees until an hour after seating. The pasta was just okay (there are lots of other spots in SF with better pasta), and the pork chop was a bit tough after ordering it medium. The entrees took so long, we thought that maybe they were still catching the pig at the farm. The ambiance was nice though with the high ceilings. Finally tried this iconic SF spot. Great service -- water refilled often, they replaced our plates + silverware between each course, and wiped the tables down. We went as a group of 8 and ordered a bunch of small plates to share, and shared mains between 2 people. Favorite small plates were the flatbread, fried fish, and pork belly. Noticed that my review is 9+ years old. After reading those superlatives, nothing has changed...in a good way. We're here pretty regularly and we constantly ask how they do it. How many restaurants can keep a perfect vibe going for a decade? They have a knack for keeping the dishes that work while offering new gems on a regular basis. Ditto with the wine list. I was a fan of NOPA pre pandemic and despite not going there in 3+ years, found that I still liked it. I do think some of the praise ("best restaurant in SF") is overrated. I also have found that the quality/consistency has decreased a little over the years (and others I've talked to have felt similarly). But the experience (service, beautiful space, ingredient quality) is good - you definitely pay for it though. I haven't had the burger in a long time but it was good. It used to be amazing, I think it got a little less great each time I had it but solid. I used to say it was one of my favorite burgers in SF, not sure if I'd still say that but it was good. Some of their menu changes due to seasonality but there are some dishes that are consistently on it although the specifics of those dishes like the garnishes and sauces changes with what is in season. Some of their standard dishes include the pork chop, the burger, fried chicken, a fried fish dish, flat bread, and a few others. The menu isn't huge but I think there's something for most people. I've found that there can be some seasoning issues - the albacore with peppers, roasted potatoes, aioli, and an egg which was basically a deconstructed niçoise was a great idea but the heavy handedness of the flakey salt made certain bites almost inedible. The fried chicken has a great crunchy crust but the Moroccan spices were a slightly odd addition in my opinion and the chicken itself was a bit dry. Other dishes in the past have sometimes felt over or under seasoned (they give you some flakey salt so under seasoning is honestly less of any issue because you can fix it). For me, it's more of 3 and a half stars. I round up because it is a nice experience and they have good cocktails although the prices are probably just a tad higher than I would ideally expect. By no means a cheap meal but it's nice for taking out of town guests or if you want a special meal. Reservations can be a little tough but are definitely easier to get now than before the pandemic. You can also walk in. I've had pretty good luck at getting last minute reservations as well. read more

One of the best experiences I've had at a restaurant, regardless of price. It was our first time at Nopa, and the entire experience was flawless. The ambiance was great, with a lovely, exciting vibe that made the whole night feel special. The kitchen absolutely blew us away. Huge compliments to the chef because the food was phenomenal from start to finish. We started with the baked beans and the smoked trout appetizer, both of which were incredible. For entrees, the pork chop and fried chicken were perfectly executed, rounded out by fantastic sides of french fries and broccoli. Every single dish was an absolute home run. The service completely matched the stellar quality of the food. Our server gave us great detail on the menu and provided plenty of attention without ever being burdensome. We were way too full for dessert, but they thoughtfully packed up a couple of chocolate cookies to go anyway. They even included an extra container of honey with our to-go containers for the leftover chicken tomorrow. Finally, as I was walking out the door balancing a handful of boxes, someone rushed to my aid with a bag. An extraordinary meal, amazing atmosphere, and outstanding hospitality. Great food, but long wait times during peak hours. Heard great things about Nopa across the board, so I booked a reservation here on a Saturday evening to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday. We arrived on time at 8pm and were seated immediately. Water took a while to arrive; the table next to us was seated after us, but received their water first. Appetizers also took about ~20 mins to arrive and entrees even longer. The food was amazing, though. Bf ordered the Nopa Cheeseburger, which was cooked perfectly to medium rare per his request--and the patty was insanely juicy! The fries were on the "healthier" side, comparable to In-N-Out--which I loved. I ordered the Tagliatelle which was amazing; the pasta texture was perfect and I enjoyed it with the bolognese. As a sweet birthday touch, the staff brought us warm sea salt chocolate chip cookies, which we devoured. The ambiance was classic SF--dimly lit, modern, urban. Nopa has been around since 2006 and always received stellar reviews as a farm to table favorite. Since we had never tried it, we decided to finally check it out though husband is not a foodie. We got a 5:30 pm reservation for inside on a November night and people were lined up as they open at 5:30. We had specified it was our anniversary yet they did nothing special to recognize it. They initially were going to sit us upstairs, but we asked to sit downstairs in a booth, so they placed us in a two top near the wall and very close to others (we could hear every conversation - congrats to the college kid and his baseball scholarship). We were dismayed to see several booths later filled with two people - were they regulars? Hubby ordered a Bulleit manhatten but they didn't have that brand, so he ordered it with another bourbon. What came out tasted like a chemicals so he sent it back (they didn't charge him). I stuck with a $20 glass of sauv blanc and it was fine. We started with the grilled calamari for $20 which was tasty but small portions and a bit chewy. The chickpeas and salsa accompanying was very good. We also ordered bread with house whipped butter for $9. Pricey but that butter was delicious, Husband ordered the famous pork chop, which was big and served with a side of sweet potato mash and greens for $49. He enjoyed it but said it wasn't the best he ever had. I ordered the tagliatelle with house made bolognese over rapini at $35, which was delicious. Sauce was made with pork and beef and I took half home, which heated up nicely the next day. We finished by sharing a mascarpone semifreddo with figs and honey, which was good but not amazing at $18. Asked for a glass of port but they only had bottles (?). Service was good and our waiter tried his best. Meal ended up at $180, they only charged us for one glass of wine each though we had two, not sure if a mistake or trying to make it better after a bad start. My boyfriend and I came to Nopa to celebrate our 1st anniversary. We had a reservation for 9:15 PM and arrived at 9:30. The manager greeted us in a cold and condescending tone, saying, "The kitchen DOES close at 9:30," as if we had arrived late to a dentist appointment. Still, we were let to seat. We were given a side table without a candle, while all the other tables had them. It felt like a small detail, but it added to the sense that we weren't really welcome. We ordered quickly, two appetizers, the steak, and wine. All the dishes arrived almost at once. The $68 steak was filled with ligaments, and the appetizers were overly soaked in olive oil. After we finished the meat, our waiter brought the check without asking if we wanted anything else. It felt rushed and dismissive. We asked if they had a dessert menu, and he did bring it, but by then the mood was spoiled and we no longer felt like staying. We paid nearly $200 and left. We weren't even the last guests as several tables were still enjoying dessert and liqueurs as we walked out. To NOPA: Yes, we were late, BUT if you're going to seat guests, treat them like they matter. If you cannot provide the experience, than don't seat! Ok idk what it is about me sitting at counter tables and overhearing dramatic dates but it happened YET AGAIN. These 2 (middle aged) men were sitting next to us talking about one of them getting back into dating after his last serious thing went terribly wrong (it sounded like he went through a divorce) and how all his new prospective girlfriends are psychotic. Anyways aside from that, the service was interesting, our server kept a very casual tone and like kept coming up out of nowhere to make comments about our food or like pour us water and stuff but at the same time this was a fancy enough place that they were taking away all of our plates and cutlery after every course. Honestly I thought it fit the super lively and bustling vibes of the restaurant. We got high top tables facing the kitchen and we could see when our food was about to be served. It was honestly a really fun experience. The base menu here mostly stays constant, but the ingredients shift daily. I noticed they always check off every single box of texture, flavour, and heaviness(?). They do a really good mix of fruits and veggies and protein mix. In fact almost every single one of our dishes had some fruit incorporated. The tuna tartare was super yummy. The tuna was super fresh and not fishy at all. The crisps that came on the side was made of chickpea flour and was a super interesting and unique texture. The thinly sliced jalapeños were a refreshing addition to balance out the fatty tuna. I also liked that the sauce wasn't too salty or strong but just enough to give flavour. Next the stracciatella was just a blob of everything I like to eat. The cheese was super creamy and yummy and the white peaches were a nice sweet contrast to the cheese and mints were another super refreshing addition that really elevated the whole dish. The walnuts were okay (but I'm also not a huge walnut fan) but they did add a fun crunchy texture while everything else was soft. The flatbread was another super yummy app. The bread was perfectly airy and crispy and the topping combination was another one of fruity (from the berries), refreshing/herby (from arugula), and meaty (from the super thinly sliced ham). Moving onto the mains, I really liked the pork chop. The sauce was simmered down strawberry and peach and it sounds weird but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it went really well with the meat. The pork is cooked to medium rare (and they do warn you about it) but I had full trust in them to not poison me (and I'm a big believer in eating meats as rare as possible anyways). The potato on the side was super yummy and the skin was super crispy. The new york steak was also super yummy. They cooked it to medium rare and it wss super evenly cooked all around. Tbh the steak was quite salty and I was confused as to why they gave a whole side of salt for every table. The blue cheese sauce was super fragrant and yummy and was a good contrast to the (literal) cherries on top. I also quite liked the cabbage wedge on the side. The sauce on it was citrusy and kinda reminded me of Japanese sesame ginger salad dressing. read more
