I used to go to the Del Mar location but when that one closed down, we started coming to this one and was excited to find everything taste exactly the same! While I have tried multiple dishes, my classic go to is the New York Steak and Eggs, the eggs are hands done the best I've ever had! I have tried to perfect them at home and it just never tastes the same! They're breakfast plates come served with either pancakes or a side of toast and their dinner entrees come with a side salad and a soup, my favorite is the gumbo! But their reputation is being tarnished by an inept kitchen staff and certain complicite wait staff. I ordered my steak medium rare ,they cooked it well done. We ordered a pancake breakfast to go which was ready before one of our party ever received their pancakes. The reason for the delay? The cooks had to mix more batter. I opted for the 9.99 NY steak with fried shrimps, salads and soup combo (Add $1 if you want dessert). The service at this location is quick, I started to get feeded almost right after my order. Its always nice to have a warm soup to start up the meal, a plate of fresh salad and the bread..wow, better than I expected! My Steak was cooked to my liking (amazing, sometimes even famous steakhouse can't get this right). It comes with 1/2 dozen fried shrimp and also my choice of side (mashed potato). The steak is not as tender as the more expensive places but it is somewhat juicy. The fried shrimp is quite decent too. I actually liked their shrimp cocktail sauce. Also their mash potatoes..wow..REAL mashed potatoes! not those that came out of some boxed powder! Brown gravy are good too! I hope these diners won't go away. This was the worst...was not busy and they act like they are...the Floor supervisor is so unprofessional, I'm waiting to be seated and he says hold on, then when he was done on the cash register he said just take that table. He came with menus and sets it down and walks away, 5 minutes later this guy walks up and asked if we were ready and so my granddaughter was ordering her food and then he says I'm only taking your drink order. So, then a few minutes later the server says I'll be with you in a few minutes. Finally she comes to take the order, my granddaughter orders and then I am ordering and before I could finish ordering she folds her wallet and starts to walk away, I said excuse me, she said yes, I said I would like the hash browns loaded, she did not ask if I wanted pancakes or toast but she was gone before I could ask for toast, so she brought pancakes...then we had to ask for things that should have come with the food and didn't...then when we get the bill, there is a drink on there that we didn't order, and the supervisor wants to tell me that was my drink...I said I didn't not order chocolate milk, she said what did she drink and I said she had lemonade it's on the top of the receipt, he started to say no, then he seen it, so he says well you have to wait, I have to redo the check. Love this place! I've never had a bad meal at Norms. I love their gumbo soup, club sandwich, hamburgers, pancakes, and just about everything. It can get super busy but staff is always attentive, service is quick, and prices are great. They have a huge menu with a ton of variety too, which is nice if you have a picky one in the group. The only thing I don't like about this place is the Pepsi products and their desert options are meh. I have been coming to this particular location for years and I have never been disappointed, that is not to say every experience has been amazing but overall delicious. BTW, parking sucks. This is like a Denny's/IHOP sort of joint. They have cheap breakfast that's served all day long, which is great for me since I like having breakfast at night. The reason I like coming here is because of the gigantic fudge a la mode, it's a huge plate with like 5 pieces of brownie, a bunch of scoops of ice cream topped with hot fudge and whip cream. Norms is open for patio seating which is great but what I noticed while sitting and waiting for my meal is they are NOT sanitizing the tables between customers. The guy cleaning the table literally cleaned 3 tables with the same small napkin or whatever he had in his hand while pushing the garbage can around the parking lot with the same gloves. 2/25/2022 10:38pm was a very sad time for me at norm I found out that the manager at this location on Whittier Blvd and maybe norms hates military people and there family's the server an older Hispanic lady was amazing as our server food was what you would expect from norms not bad and not a amazing but good and the place was busy and food came out fast and hot. The manager a 50 something thin man with glasses has for as I can remember has always been bitter almost angry that you should up to eat . When we went to pay there was three of us 2 military (1 active 1 not ) we asked for the military discount 20% we presented two ids the bill was $87.00 pre tip after tax the discount was $3.13 I asked him what happened he said I discounted the onion rings I said those were mine I'm not the military guy he said well that's all you get it's done he then turned and walked away . So disappointing my wife is in town for one night and not that the discount will make or break the night but we are so proud of her it's nice that some places acknowledge the military sacrifice they make for this country it's not in good taste to not fully comply with what they offer may they should just do away with the discount . I ordered a full rack of baby back ribs normally $14.99 with all the trimmings but I had a coupon for $11.99. What a deal!!! I have had ribs elsewhere a few times recently looking for the ultimate ribs and this place is the absolute cheapest and best ever. It is "fall off the bone" tender. Sad for me it's for a limited time but that just gives my hubby and I an excuse to have something else on their vast menu of choices. Have not had a bad meal there yet and we've gone for years and years now. That location is the best we've gone to. Plus they have the Gumbo Soup which is addictive.
