I brought my 2011 dodge minivan in for a rebuilt transmission and went to pick it up and was informed it was stolen during the night, no police report filed, no call from the shop telling me my car was gone, vague when asking details and then had the nerve to tell me i'm responsible for payment. Wouldn't take another car there, also they said i needed other things done when they pulled transmission and wondering if this was true or not, initially paid for them to check out the transmission and all they said was it needed to be rebuilt not that other things were leaking either so now i wonder if they tried to sell me things that weren't wrong. read more

I am very grateful to have found this place. My car broke down due to my clutch giving out. I was stranded in Shoreline and I had to call a tow truck. I have never had my car break down and didn't know what to do and where to go. When I called this place they were able to get my car in right away. The nice thing was that they were able to have the tow truck just drop off my vehicle and I didn't need to be there. Repairs took about a week, which I'm sure is standard because they needed to find the right parts. They were very knowledgeable about clutch repairs and thankfully they were able to find the right kit that was compatible with my vehicle. read more

Horrible experience. My car had a faulty transmission and I needed to get it replaced. This place was close by and I had them replace it. They replaced it alright, and in the process messed up my car's engine. It made nasty buzzing noises when I got my car back, and that's not even the worst part. After coming back to them again and asking them to fix it, they denied it was happening. They took the car out for a test drive, said they didn't hear it despite it being a constant loud and obnoxious noise, so I had them sit with me in the car, turned it on and pointed out the noise that anyone could hear. After 2 seconds, they immediately said it wasn't related to what they did and all but forced me out the door. Afterwards, I visited a standard car shop and had them take a look. Apparently they found the plastic inlet t to the air filter box loose, missing the rubber grommet. This was fixed, but cost me even more money. Sure, the issue may not be related to the transmission directly, but it's not a matter of it being transmission-related or not! After replacing my transmission, North Seattle Transmission put everything back together poorly and caused this issue, and weren't willing to fix their mistake forcing me to shell out even more money to fix the problem THEY caused. Rude the whole time too. read more

I had my front differential repaired at this business and the cost was + $2,200. When I picked up my vehicle and did a test run to see if the noise that indicated a repair being required the same noise returned just like it was when I first brought it in for service. The second repair actually fixed the original problem and I only had to pay for parts at $172. The problem is that the initial repair was misdiagnosed and I am out +$2,000 that didn't need to be spent. As a retired Project Manager for a very large company had this misdiagnoses been caused by my company I would have made the offer to my client that since it was my company's fault I will reduce the Labor part of the bill by 50%. Yes they did re-build the front differential but was it needed? Probably Not! If North Seattle Transmission made an offer like this it would have demonstrated what we called "Good Client Care". With that maybe I would be bring in some of my other vehicles mechanical issues in the future. But no offer has presented. PREDATORY TACTICS- Do not use. I recently had my truck, a 2015 Toyota Tacoma professionally lifted 3 inches. The following day I heard a pulsating noise. I immediately brought it back to the Les Schwab and had a technician drive with me. He immediately knew what it was, as it is a well-known issue when lifting these vehicles in particular. He recommended changing the bearing on the front left side of the differential with a bushing. I did some research and found a ton of people stating the same thing. I called North West differential and told them exactly what I was wanting to have done. I dropped off the truck as the technician said he wanted to take it on a longer test-drive before starting the work. Without worries I left with an expectation of the work being done that day. Several hours later as I didn't hear anything I called back and was told they still needed to look at it. Next morning I call and ask status. They recommended an approximately $4 thousand dollar repair. While almost choking on my coffee I told them I'd just go pick up the truck. Upon arrival I was presented with a $139 bill. I did not ask for a diagnostic to be done, I asked for the bearing to be replaced with a bushing. They did not mention any cost for leaving the truck there. She promptly said it was posted, obviously they've had this similar situation before, I would not doubt many times. read more

My bike was due for its 1000 mile service and they came to pick up my bike on a Tuesday said be done in a day or so. You should get you bike back by Thursday or Friday the latest!, Friday came by more Harley phone call ? Saturday I call.... Oh we were busy so we haven't started working on your bike ... " we will start right now sir! It's going on the lift as we speak be done 2mrw afternoon! " They can do it in hrs but take your bike for days and weeks if you don't call then they just keep it ‍ Got my bike finally!! CAUTION:  OVER PAID($850 vs $560 @ LES SCHWAB), POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. GO SOMEWHERE ELSE THAT'S MORE REPUTABLE. I initially came here to get a diagnosis to confirm my suspicion of a wheel bearing issue. After my suspicion was confirmed, I decided to go with them for the work so I don't need to pay for the diagnosis fee. They made it sound like it was a regular thing to replace both sides when I only needed the one to be replaced. Then they told me that they could get it done by the end of the day so I decided to go with it. The part was supposed to come in early afternoon so I called around 3pm because I didn't hear anything back. The manager said they didn't receive the shipment so they would have to do it on Monday, which was 3 days away. I was about to go back to the shop to pick up my car due to it was still drivable but the manager said it was already taken apart and they were not going to be able to put it back in time before closing( RED FLAG #1). At this point, I started to lose trust in them because of the LACK OF COMMUNICATION. I was left without a car the entire weekend and I had to go to work on Sunday. This required me to organize transportation to/form work. On Monday, I didn't hear anything in regards to the status of my vehicle so I called in around 1pm. The manager said they received the parts but now they might have to order an axle because the threads were deteriorated. My suspicion is that it was damaged by them when the wheel bearing was taken off. They were going to charge me for it because "it's normal when replacing it". (RED FLAG #2) They ended up using a kit to fix it and said the axle was still good. When I went to the shop to pick up my car, I asked to talk to the mechanic about what was fixed for my understanding but coincidentally, he went home early that day. I then asked to see the kit that was they used to fix the threading but apparently it was thrown out and it was trash day so it was no longer on site. Hmm suspicious. SHADY. When voicing my concerns and frustration about my experience with this business, the manager seemed to not care one bit and did not want to make it right. She did not care for new repeat customers. This place has a lot of experience, I brought my Infiniti here, after bringing it to two other auto shops- the guys here were able to identify what was wrong with the car easily, and confidently. Although there was nothing wrong with my transmission as told by the previous shops- these guys were super friendly in explaining what was wrong- and most of all, they were RIGHT. If you need auto help they are the ones to go to, especially if your concerned about your transmission. read more

Went here on Friday morning when they opened. They said the car would be ready by noon. I waited the whole time outside the shop. Didn't get the car till after they closed (close at 4:30) because the guy working on it had to leave for some reason that had nothing to do with my car or his shop. Even though the car was done I had to wait for him to come back an hour later after the shop was already closed for him to just charge me and give me the keys. Very unprofessional. Seems like they don't care. Don't waste your time here. And don't let AAA recommend you to them. read more

I took my Japanese imported mini truck to North Seattle Transmission because I was having issues with the transmission. They were very thorough and professional!! They were able to fix the issue but they also looked up what other solutions would cost as well. A mini truck can be incredibly hard to get fixed - they went above and beyond! I would definitely go back if other issues arrived and I cannot recommend them enough! read more

I have been taking my fleet of junkers out to Dennis and his crew for years. It had been about 3 years since I needed any tranny work, but I am happy to report the execellent service that has kept me coming back, is still there. The place isnt fancy nor does it offer any free pocpcorn, or big screen TVs, but you can always count on Dennis to give you a fair and honest deal on car repair. I grew up in Detroit and come from a long line of mechanics. There isnt much that I cant diagnose or repair on older cars. Transmissions is one of those things that I wont even consider touching. Over the last 10 years, these guys have helped me keep 4 different vehicles servicable and on the road at a very reasonable price. This is important when you have a family with 4 drivers like I do. I love my car! I own a 1998 Toyota Landcruiser with 332,000 miles. When my car was towed in to my regular mechanic, I was concerned that my Landcruiser might be suffering a fatal repair. The worst appeared likely when my mechanic shook his head and said, "North Seattle Transmission should be the next stop for my beloved vehicle". The likelihood of the repair required a specialist that dealt with the intricacies of transmissions, transfer cases etc. Dollar signs danced across my eyes and my knowledge base was left behind. Was this to be the end of my faithful ride? Was I to trust someone I have never seen before let alone worked with? The long and the short of my tale is that my Landcruiser lived to run another day! Dennis and the technicians at North Seattle Transmission were skilled, attentive and certainly trustworthy. They earned their pay day. They were very good at keeping me in the loop and stayed in touch with me on nearly a daily basis. I heartily recommend them. They are skilled technicians and gentlemen to boot. Their customer service in general is just honest and makes you feel at ease. They are closed on weekends, which can be inconvenient. I spoke with a couple of their shop guys and although I ended up not doing the work with them this time around, they were a pleasure to deal with and were actually more informative about my transfer case failure than the dealership. They offer a warranty for AAA members and they were recommended to me by another trusted shop (Johnson's). Agree with dkw about the talking down to women, but also I'd add, belittling to people on a budget. I've had excellent, respectful experiences with mechanics in my 7 years in Seattle, and this is the first time I've felt talked down to. That said, I am sure some of the mechanics here are good at their jobs, and they did come recommended for their work, but there are big issues with their communication. To begin with the one thing they told me they did, which is top off the transmission fluid, was not actually done. I brought it to another shop immediately after taking it off their lot who right away found that the fluid was still low, which even with a leak would not add up. I basically paid them $70 for experiencing two belittling conversations. In the first, they called with a recommendation of spending nearly $2K to simply look at the transmission, all previous to actually making any repairs. With repairs, if after that they seemed necessary, it was beginning to sound like a $3-4K job. While I understand it takes time to get to the transmission, and very much respect the time mechanics put into their work, as someone without endless dollars and the value of the car making it possibly not worth putting all that money into, it seems natural to me that I'd want to discuss other options, something simpler I could do to keep the vehicle running, as all of the other mechanics I've ever spoken with have been natural to offer in the first place. Instead, I found myself in a bizarre conversation, being asked personal and belittling questions most of which I don't think they had the business to ask. Like, "well, how are you going to get around without reliable transportation?" "How often do you use the car? You need it to get to work, don't you?" Meanwhile, I'm audibly on the bus, and, point it out. Lastly, when I point out that it's an older car that isn't worth much, and that I may not want to spend all of this extra money on it without considering my options, he goes off that I should know that how much you purchase a car for doesn't dictate how much the repairs are going to cost, etc, completely missing the point, which is just that sometimes it's not worth spending the money to save an older car. I was totally taken aback by the tone of this guy's comments and questions. Not only were they personal and condescending, but I also want to point out, plenty of people live in this city without cars. There are things called bikes, and buses, and also -- maybe I want to get a new car, and not keep one that needs $4,000 of work? -- either way, not his business to be asking about. I appreciate his concern if that's what it was, but it really didn't come off that way. It just made me feel bad for not being rich enough to have a luxury car or enough expendable income to throw $2K at a mechanic without first asking a few questions. On top of that, this morning when I went to pick up the car, he decided to go ahead and assume that I hadn't had my car checked out before purchasing it in the first place. I was too tired of them by then to even bother explaining that yes, I did have two mechanics do a complete check of the car and tell me I was making a good purchase, and had the seller meet me at their lot, etc. I'm not a total idiot, but thanks for taking that one last opportunity to make me feel like one. Basically these guys just need to chill out a little on their unsolicited life advice. Anyway, that was my experience, and I would not recommend this shop to anyone who doesn't feel like feeling bad about being a woman, or a person on a budget who is thoughtful about how they spend their money. This is the transmission shop I pick out of the yellow pages, I'm sure glad I went to have some transmission work done. When diagnosing the problem they went further than most mechanics would go to figure the problem out not knowing if I were to give them the work. Dennis the manager was super friendly and very professional. When I got my jeep back , it shifted so smooth and was so excellent to deal with trust worthily mechanics. 3 days later I had a antifreeze leak I called Dennis and he said bring it up . He had Freddy look at it meanwhile they are busy , it was a radiator hose which they don't work on nor did they even cause the leak. yes i took my 1984 dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 there they rebuilt my automatic (727) transmission and resealed my transfer case and new rear main seal / oil pan gasket-no more oil leaks and a rebuilt tranny -ham and dennis and crew took care of my truck and did a great job five stars-the price was a little high but that said they did a great job and i am very happy, and you know the old saying- you get what you pay for (in most cases) so the extra costs are worth it in the long run. i highly recommened this shop they stand behind there work...(p s some other reviews complain about prices but if you factor in the price of a new vehicle its worth it.just saying) read more

I had my used 2003 Dodge Ram (with 230,000 miles on it) worked on by North Seattle Transmission almost six months ago but wanted to allow for a few thousand miles of driving before I wrote a review. When I initially took my truck there I knew the transmission was having problems shifting and was the reason I got such a good deal on the rig in the first place. I'm a pretty handy guy but there's no way I could tackle a repair of this magnitude. I had done research and knew some of the potential issues it could be having. After explaining my thoughts and concerns to Dennis they started trying to diagnose the problem. They knew I didn't want to do anything major and asked me to authorize $1000 of work to try and sort it out. It turns out the truck was in "limp mode" and only using two of the four the gears and no overdrive. We were both hopeful but as they systematically went through the various components it became clear that there were many things out of order with my transmission and computer. Gradually the cost became higher and higher, which no one wants to hear, but I never felt that they were taking advantage of me or trying to inflate the repair needs. I was asking a lot of them with regard to keeping the cost down but because I allowed them to hang onto my truck and work on it when they had time, Dennis worked on the price with me. We came to deal which was more than I was ever expecting to pay but less than the quotes I was getting from other shops and resulted in a fully rebuilt transmission. Mind you, they sunk many hours into trying to fix it for cheaper, because that's what I asked of them, which they didn't charge me for. The truck finally drives the way it's supposed to it's got a year warranty on their work. It's important to remember that when you're having a major system such as the transmission serviced/repaired/rebuilt it's unlikely to be a cheap fix. This is highly technical work which most of us (even gear-heads) just don't have the time, knowledge, or equipment to undertake. If you feel unsure about what your mechanic is saying needs to be done to your vehicle you should call around and get some other shop's quotes. I did and that's why I feel good about the work that North Seattle Transmission did for me. read more

I had my transmission rebuilt here 2 years ago and just had my daughter's clutch replaced. Both times I felt like I was treated fairly and charged a fair price. They repair what they can and don't make you buy new if not needed. I like that and I like that they didn't up-sale me on anything. I took my heavy GM vehicle to Dennis, with a persistent problem to my brand new transmission that another shop couldn't figure out. It left me stranded nearly every month. Within one week, Dennis had identified the problem and began rebuilding my blown trans. Hamilton, who was also very helpful, decided to build the trans extra heavy duty for my vehicle, just for extra peace of mind. My vehicle now performs better than it's ever been. I've owned it 14yrs. Their communication is horrible. Took it there with a recommendation from another shop. Took it in right after they opened in the morning with a list that the other shop gave me of things they found. Asked for them to look it over, let me know what they find, and give me a quote. Didn't hear back all day. I called at the end of the day to check on things. They said they drove it and are just about to put it on the lift to take a look and that I wouldn't get it back that day but I will get a call the next day. Well... They've had it all day at this point, but hey, maybe they were busy. It happens. Day two: Hear absolutely nothing. Call again at the end of the day for an update. They say they they're still looking at it. I ask for a quote again. Again I'm promised a call the next day. They don't have a quote at this point for me and I'm without a vehicle again. Day 3: Again hear absolutely nothing. Again I call at the end of the day. Oh! We're just finishing putting it back together. You can come pick it up soon! Huh?! How much is this costing?! ...They don't know because they don't have the paperwork done yet. It'll be done when I get there. ... ... ... What auto shop works that way?! I get there... Paperwork still isn't done. Wait around for a bit.... Then bam! You owe us $1250! Excuse me?! I didn't get a quote. I asked for one multiple times. I didn't authorize work. Too bad. Zero stars, this place is shady to say the very least. Brought my 2000 Z28 here around 2011. The rear end gears went out and left it for an estimate. The vehicle was in running condition but made various noises. The guy calls back, Dennis, and says the fix will be around $2400. I tell him I don't have that kind of funds available and he says I can pick my car back up but the rear end is taken apart and I'll need a tow truck. What??? He also said they did a certain amount of work I'll be charged for, can't remember how much exactly as this was a number of years ago but it's work I hadn't agreed to I was just asking for an estimate. Also had never agreed to have the vehicle put into non running condition. I ended up gathering the funds to have a vehicle I needed for work, they offered a small cash discount. A week after the 6 month warranty went out on their work the rear end went out again. Stay away!!!!!!!!!!!! Bad business. read more

In early 2018 my Honda Civic was shifting pretty rough and the check engine light came on so I brought it to O'reillys and got a diagnostic code of P0847 (transmission fluid pressure sensor). I brought it to North Seattle Transmission to get it fixed. They said it was going to be quite simple, change the transmission fluid and change the sensor. They charged me $827 for this. A year later the exact same thing was happening, and it gave me the same code of P0847. This time I brought it to the Honda dealer in Seattle and they said I need the exact same thing, a fluid change and replace the sensor. I pulled my proof of work from North Seattle Transmission out of my glove box and showed it to the guy at the Honda dealership. He said that is the exact work they recommend and he does not know why its happening again. This time at the dealership I paid $294 for the exact same work. THIS PLACE CHARGED ME ALMOST TRIPLE WHAT THE DEALERSHIP CHARGED ME. read more

Took my roommate's POS Jetta there with a slipping tranny and while I figured it is not worth fixing; Mr. Hamilton not only filled up the fluid and checked the filter, but did this for FREE. After 5 months a problem developed that probably wasn't their responibility and it was fixed for no extra labor charge. Integrity is alive and well at this shop. When we had a tuneup at another shop they told us that the transmission was leaking. Also, they suggested that we have CV axle replaced. We took the car to North Seattle Transmission and they replaced axles, boots and seals.They thought that was the cause of fluid leak. Since this didn't stop the leak, all the work they performed was billed at 0 cost to us. They then pulled the transmission and made the proper repair at a very fair price. Although we would ultimately need CV axle, we got them basically no cost. I have never had a shop perform repairs and not charge for it, Thanx Ham and Dennis, I would recommend them to anyone. read more

What a frustrating experience with this shop.. If you have a transmission or torque converter issue with your Audi or other Euro cars, please think TWICE before bringing it to North Seattle Transmission. I dropped my Audi A4 with them to have my P0741 code checked which I knew was a torque converter not locking up code. They kept the car for half a day to diagnose and got a call from Dennis that it needs a new Torque Converter. Took a week longer than promised but i gave them that to make sure that the job gets done. I picked up the car and I could smell transmission fluid inside the car but I thought it could just the be the spillage.. Drove the car home and immediately noticed the transmission did not shift right. When it changes gear or when the TC locks up, it slams to the next gear - I kept it for a few days thinking it will adapt but did not.. The smell of tranny fluid was still evident inside the car and I can see a puddle on the garage floor from the transmission fluid. I brought the car in and had the mechanic (Hamilton) drove the car to feel and see what was going on. He notices too but kept insisting that's how a Torque Converter should feel when it locks up. I thought to myself as a car guy, seriously!! That was BS because my wife has a similar car and it never slams when the TC locks up. As if they wanted me to accept the fact that, that's how it should be and the car is fixed. Dennis also kept saying not all cars are the same and that my other Audi was different and a few years older. They agreed to look at it again and to check the leak also but I had to come back the next day. The kept the car for 3 days to inspect. 3 days later, got the car back but no change in shifting and leak is still present. This was getting frustrating.. Brought the car back again for the third time and I even took pictures on my garage floor and under the car to show them it's not engine oil but tranny oil. They again kept the car for 5 days this time and I was loosing money from car renta as they would not provide a loaner as a courtesy knowing I paid $3400 and they could not fix the problem. I always wondered why it would take 5 days to troubleshoot a leak and and a shifting issue. I was really helpless and at their mercy. Finally got a call and they said the car is ready and that I would love the shifting now. I got the car back and and the shifting was fixed and shifted normal and the way it should but not after a long battle and what seemed to be an endless battle. The following day, I again see drips of fresh tranny fluid on my garage floor and I crawled under the car and sure enough it was at the same spot. I wondered if they really fixed leak. This time I was fed up. I knew if I brought it in, I would again be carless and who knows for how long and I could not deal with it anymore that I ended up trading the car. I loved that car but it was never the same. read more
