    Fried pork!

North Gate feels like a full-on food stall amusement park ! This location in Costa Mesa is HUGE! Upon arrival the parking lot is already full (mid day on Tuesday). I'm overwhelmed--in the best way possible. Everywhere I turn, it's just stall after stalls of incredible food. How am I supposed to choose?! There's floral section..tortilla, fresco, Mexican bread, chicken, salsa fried pork stalls...and on and on! I need to come back but may need two hour lunch break?!! The checkout line is guided by a worker to ensure it's moving!

Love this indoor Mexican Marketplace! Makes me feel like I am visiting Mexico. There's counter-style stalls and venues with various deli, bakery, and hot/prepared foods that you can browse, loiter and shop to your heart's content for authentic and hard-to-find Mexican goods in their main grocery store. I especially love their fresh churros and the pork rind (chicharron) stands. There's also a small restaurant/bar inside with ample seating to enjoy the made-to-order foods and beverages you purchased from all the individual stalls. Prices for their normal grocery items are reasonable too.

Northgate in Costa Mesa is one of my favorite grocery stores. I've been shopping at Northgate Market since I was a little girl, but the Costa Mesa location was the first time I experienced their incredible food hall, Mercado González, featuring different regional cuisines from across Mexico. Each stand is thoughtfully designed to serve freshly made food quickly, while still offering the warm and welcoming hospitality that feels reminiscent of visiting Mexico itself. One thing I especially appreciate is how each vendor also shares the history and cultural significance behind the dishes they serve, making the experience feel both delicious and educational. From tamales to sushi, churros, guisados, and so much more, every item I've tried has been absolutely delicious. My personal favorite is El Moro, the famous Mexico City churros, which instantly remind me of my childhood. My second favorite is the ceviche stand, which offers a variety of fresh, flavorful options that are always vibrant and satisfying. Beyond the prepared foods, the market itself is incredible. They offer fresh produce, chilis, salsas, handmade tortillas, aguas frescas, ice creams, and juices that truly bring a piece of Mexico home with you. The store also carries piñatas, pottery, candles, and even features a sit down restaurant, making it feel like so much more than just a grocery store. From the music playing throughout the market to the genuinely friendly staff, Northgate Costa Mesa is an amazing experience and an absolute must visit.

I've been to many Northgates so when my fiancée raved about this one in Costa Mesa, I rolled my eyes and questioned what made this one so different. Holy Moly I could stay here all day! Started with tamales, also had shrimp ceviche, picked up a sandia agua fresca, all while grocery shopping!! Worth the drive even though I probably passed three other Northgates on the way here.

Finally made my way here after saying countless times how I should check it out and it did not…read moredisappoint! I wasn't really sure what to expect, so I went in with zero expectations. I went on a Friday night and it was VERY lively! There was a band playing by the bar and it was packed! People were drinking, dancing, hanging out. All of this is happening in a supermarket! Lots of food vendors to check out and all of it looked delicious! I don't remember the names of the places my friend and I ordered food from, but I had a chile relleno burrita, seafood cocktail, and pozole. I've never really had chile relleno, so I decided to just go for it and try something different even though there were other options that were more my preference. It was alright. Good thing it was only $5. The seafood cocktail was delicious! They did not skimp on the seafood and everything in it tasted so fresh. Pozole wasn't terrible, but just like my burrita, it was a bit on the bland side. Maybe my palate skews too heavily towards salty, but I felt like a little salt here and there would've really improved the flavors in everything we ordered. Overall the quality/freshness was there! Regarding the market part, nothing special. Maybe a little more selection than your typical Northgate, especially in the liquor department. Their wall of tequila was impressive. I will definitely be back again to try the other foods! In fact, I may just come all the way out here to do grocery shopping from time to time. I saw a guy doing some shopping with a cocktail in his cart and I want to live that life. Bro definitely had the right idea.

During my recent visit, Wendy at cashier station 5 on 6.13.2026 at around 7:30pm provided extremely disrespectful service and openly stated that she did not care enough to learn the pricing codes while scanning items. This raises concerns about pricing accuracy, not only for me but for other loyal customers as well. Fortunately, the employee assisting with bagging demonstrated far more professionalism and took the initiative to correct the mistakes caused by Wendy's lack of attention and concern. I hope management addresses this issue, as customers deserve courteous service and confidence that they are being charged accurately.

The grocery is good for what to expect for any Asian market but the main attraction is the food court. It may not seem like much but all of them are really good and would fill up your hunger instantly. My favorites from the top of my head are the Katsu Don if I remember correctly and the Udon section where you pick your tempura (don't know the exact name). Overall good place to eat lunch or even dinner. Another problem would be finding a seat since there's hardly any tables and your plate is pretty big and bowls are heavy so you have to be somewhat quick to find a seat. The ambiance is fine but that's kind of to be expect in any supermarket, which is usually crowds talking and all. I really don't have much to say. Ever since this place closed down the anime shop, the DVD store, and bookstore, this place pretty much lost what made Mitsuwa special and worth visiting. Especially for someone who's into both anime and tokusatsu like Super Sentai (Japanese Power Rangers). Those places are what got me my first Gundam model kit (Freedom Gundam from Gundam Seed) and my go to place for Japanese DVDs as mentioned (Gokaiger, Kyoryuger, and Nanoha). I understand why they close down these stores, especially with streaming services and online shopping are a thing, even though I don't fully agree as they are customers like me that would prefer in-store physical copies. That is why I deduct one star. These are replaces with a gachapon store, a Matcha store, a Boba store I believe and Daiso. The matcha and boba place (forgot the names sorry) are surprisingly good. I really like the matcha ice cream in a bowl and I believe the Doncha. The gachapon I cannot say as I never spend money there and I'm not into these gacha machines and I rarely buy anything in Daiso as its just your typical convenience store that sells some Japanese stuff so I won't say much. In conclusion, it's a very nice spot to eat Japanese meals and especially something to fill you up for the day while also shopping to buy Japanese food to cook at home. Just be aware this is pretty pricey, especially the Royce matcha chocolates and the food court.
