On weekends this place gets as busy as a Lucha Libre event, but they have a great organized system when placing your order for meats etc.. They give everyone a number and then it's just a waiting game. I prefer their Pollo Asado over Carne Asada. Their produce is well priced and fresh, Salsa and meats are great! they even have pinatas! I had chicharrones tacos for the first time at a friend's party and was craving for some more the next day. One of my coworkers recommended this market. As soon as I walked in, I noticed the smell of sweet freshly baked bread. So tempting, with display cases of several types of bread like I'm in a candy shop! I've had the tres leche cake from here awhile back and it was delicious!! I had to tell myself, "no, focus on the chicharrones." As I made my way to the back of the market I was amazed to see that they had several types of fresh queso fresco. I picked up some queso oaxaca deshebrado to mimic the cheese quesadilla I had the other night. I definitely enjoyed it more with white cheese and white corn tortilla. They had several types of chicharrones to choose from too. This place was very clean. The workers spoke broken English but was super courteous and asked if I needed some assistance. Let me start with the pros: great place to buy all your Mexican items. They have almost everything u need if u are cooking any Mexican dish. Cheap prices for produce, meats and poultry. Produce is also fresh compared to other markets. Fresh bread and tortillas too! They even have their own bakery with tres leches cake! yummy! And now for the Cons: first this store must have the worst parking ever! Its super small, parking is not clear to people because people are always parking wrong or coming in the wrong way creating chaos! Then, the store has the smallest isles that only one person with a shopping cart can fit going one way. Then there are long lines at the cashier blocking the way so there is no where to get through the front! Finally, customers are just so darn rude! People push and shove cut u in line and then get all pissy over the smallest things! No manners whatso ever! This store was not like this before...it has gotten worse over the last few years. Younger people with no manners have taken over this store ....its so sad because it really has good quality products. SO...If u don't mind the crappy parking and a crowded store with rude customers,who want to fight and push, then u are in the right place! U will get more bang for your buck! This is my go to market for almost everything I need. Haven't even been to one of the big chain markets, since I moved here a little over a year ago, and I can walk there from home! It's a Mexican style market, and stock, flavors, and ambience reflect that. I always feel welcome there and although my spanish is lousy, I have always been helped with extreme courtesy. The produce section is amazing for such a small market, the selection is huge, fresh, and the prices are crazy good. There is a fresh bakery and the bolilios are hot out of the oven every few hours. The carniceria is large and busy, and full of good things. The butchers are big time helpful whenever I need something special.There is also a deli with an endless array of fresh salsas, hot foods and great service. This place gets busy, and standing in line and getting to know my new neighborhood and neighbors is part of the experience. Northgate Market is nothing short of a major experience. This is definitely THE place to get pre-marinated carne asada. I know what you're thinking... what do I know, I'm just a dumb white girl. I assure you that this has all been verified by my Hispanic "in the know" friends. They are the reason I ever went here in the first place. First of all - cheap cheap cheap! You will not believe the prices until you see them for yourself. Cilantro is like .10 cents a bunch here. In fact, all of their produce is inexpensive, and a lot of it looks better than the bigger super markets. Also, I'm a sucker for pastries and cookies, and their baked goods are luscious. Their grocery selection is a little limited, so this isn't where I go for a full-on grocery shopping trip, but it's the only place I go for fish taco or carne asada night. On with the show: The deli counter. Wow. This place is always insanely busy, so get your game face on. Pull your number, and be prepared to give your order - dilly dallying is frowned upon. I don't really speak Spanish, so I have to say that the first time I pulled a number I was really hoping for the numbers 1-10 or 15 (the only numbers that I really KNOW). I pulled 36 - DAMNIT! It all worked out in the end, and I happily skipped out with salsa verde and salsa fresca (never bother making your own again), carne asada, and a hunk of queso fresco. YUM YUM YUM! Finally visited with a couple of friends to buy some Mexican style marinated chicken, pork and beer for a weekend BBQ. None of us had been to this market before; We braced for adventure. We left feeling like suckers for ever have purchased meat or produce at Ralphs. First thing we came across when we walked in was fresh packs to tortillas, still warm. As others have pointed out they only come in packs of plenty -- but they're cheap and are yummy. The in-house salsas and pico de gallo I also recommend highly. Produce section: Shocking resemblance to Whole Foods: Sparkling, well labeled, displayed with care. Of course, the prices are a fraction of the absurd prices of Whole Foods. The meat counter is epic, running the length of the back of the store with a friendly butcher MC calling out numbers and guiding customers to the next helper. If you're used to going to Trader Joes or traditional supermarkets, you'll find the prices way cheaper and the quality as good or better.. Perhaps we got lucky but other customers were friendly and helpful -- generous with tips and recommendations. We did have trouble escaping the store to fetch reusable bags from my car. Getting into the sore is easy but leaving is a challenge. Somewhat like going to an Airport where the only way out is by getting off a plane. read more

I like Northgate but it gets so packed and the lanes are not big enough for 2 carts to go threw. I love there fresh meat department and they have all kinds of Hispanic goodies that you can not find in America stores. Fresh bread, tortillas, cakes and they even have a hot food area. So if you hungry you can swing by there and grab a little something real quick. Prices are reasonable but not cheaper then Food 4 Less. Was just here a few days ago and i thought it was disgusting. First off, the parking lot is a nightmare. You'll be stuck in there for what seems like hours because of how chaotic it is. As soon as you walk in, multiply the chaos by 5 or so. There's screaming kids everywhere and just tons of people. It's extremely claustrophobic feeling on the inside. I know most mexican markets have a certain smell to them, but the smell of this one was just awful. I couldn't even tell you what it was. Possibly spoiled meat? I'm not really sure. The only plus side was that the produce section is so cheap. Which is why I went there. You can get so many fruits and veggies for a fraction of the cost you'd spend at Ralph's or Von's. There's is another one of these markets across the port that is a a whole lot better kept. I won't be returning to this market and instead make the drive across town. Correction! Northgate is a good place to shop for produce and if you need to pick up a few items. Their stock options are limited (it's not Vons) but if you need to make last minute dinner it's worth stopping in. Be prepared for long lines. Not only do they usually have only one or two checkouts available everyone here likes to chitchat. I've come here for an onion and ended up waiting in line for almost 10 minutes while everyone ahead of me talks it up with the checkout lady. The staff is friendly, although many of them don't speak English. But they'll find you someone who does. They have organic options now and the front of the store. No organic produce though. This is for the deli. I went there craving chicken mac salad as they are found in most latino market.s. I ordered it from the deli 1/2 lb for for my lunch. It was gross. It tasted old and or spoiled I took a bite and thew the rest away. No point in taking it back since I was already at work. I really wanted to like this place since in the past we've catered lunch from the deli; carnitas rice and beans. unfortunately I doubt i'll be back. I gave it a 1 star for the deli. The service was pleasant. The cashier in the front was nice and pleasant as well. At 1:30pm this place is busy, i'd say busier than most. Cashier with a look of "i don't want to be here " swipe my card like 4 times but it didn't work !! She turn off the register but didn't work ! 6 minutes try to pay i ask to the other cashier if she could charge me and she say " i don't know what she wants to do " the other cashier say that.. This grocery store has a little of everything, but when I thought I bought some authentic "Tres Leches" cake, it was horrible. Only some small corners of the cake had any milk. This Northgate Market store #1762 it's the worst. This is my second time buying nasty old meat really nasty old meat it's unaseptible and it's not OK! I've noticed that they price their meat really cheap or on sale when it going bad . It's very upsetting to come home with spoil meat and you have to drive right back just to get a apology , NO IT IS NOT OK They dont even try to make the customers happy in any way.... The store manager Gabriela G was not surprised or even embarrassed she was not profesional in speaking to me she was rude and very casual about the incident. When I walk into Northgate Supermarket, my little heart starts pumping wildly. The prices are amazing. The produce is beautiful. And, the meat/seafood and deli counter is a world in itself. You have GOT to try the fresh shrimp ceviche with some freshly made guacamole and corn chips. A friend of mine turned me onto it, and I've not been the same woman since. The cravings, gosh darn it! I have gone here for many years now and lately it's just not a place I want to go to anymore but it's somewhere I've gotten so use it. Where to start. The store looks like it gets worse every time, maybe it's the employees. From the moment you enter until the moment you leave. When you enter there's the rudest girl there asking if you want a cart or basket. You have bakery filled with flys inside where all the bread is. They now have a girl there picking out your bread due to COVID but when there's no one there, she's touching other things, scratching her head, hugging her friends like wtf. Then there's the carniceros, my mom always tries to pick out the meat she specifically wants and there's this one guy and this other old lady that always give my mom attitude because they love giving out the nastiest meat and food they have. They're not giving it away they're SELLING IT so best believe my mom WILL pick out the food SHES BUYING. You go to checkouts and we always try to look for the nice cashiers, we do not care if the other cashier don't have customers in there line, we will avoid them at all costs. They're just horrible. They really need to get rid of more than half of there employees because they're the absolute worse. I think they have high schoolers working there that don't know anything about customer service or simply don't care at all. Its a very clean looking butcher shop and the selections are very good. as for rest of the store. The aisles are narrow but theres plently of check out counters to move you fast. I like how it's close to my house but it's too small, it's crowded all they time, and they are limited in products brands that are vegan or gluten free. Tbh I don't think they even sell anything organic. The only products that I can find that is dairy free is the almond milk and soy free/vegan yogurt. Not sure if its because it's only considered a Latino chain it's has to focus on fatty and sugar products or maybe an image that the store puts out showing how all Latinos eat this way, but that's not always right. the variety of new products would be a nice thing to introduce, trust me I'm not a big fan on high sodium or packaged sweets, and anything processed. I rather got to Albertsons and other American stores tbh. But sometimes I do have to stop buy to get a few things and I'm out. I've been coming to this location ever since I moved to my neighborhood, It's close, the food is at a reasonable price and most of the staff is friendly, this place gets packed on the weekends, weeknights, and when it's about to be a major Holiday where a lot of food is consumed.. like thanksgiving or the 4th of July, they have a Panaderia (Spanish for bakery) built in so the bread is usually fresh bread a Carniceria (Butchers) so you can get fresh cuts of meat. and they even have a hot foods section in which I like buying the Rotisserie chicken or some of their seasoned potato wedges. read more

I would concur with the previous review in many regards. The first thing I would say is don't let the parking lot fool you. The lot looks dirty, but that is not a precursor to the interior. You enter at their produce/bakery case. Lots of great fresh pan dulces (sweet bread) & french bread rolls. Their produce was better looking than the Albertsons on Redondo anyday! The only thing you may not like is that there is only so much room, so as Mexican products are interjected into the assortment, they take the place of other, more pedestrian items-but what do you expect? You know where you are. The amazing thing is that most of the produce has the same produce stickers on them as you would find at any other supermarket, but the prices are insanely cheaper. I got California nectarines @ .97 cents/lb compared to Albertsons who has them on sale for $1.99/lb. This also applies to Limes which were $1.79/lb here, and I try to avoid buying altogether at supermarkets. I also picked up some whole wheat tortillas (store brand) for $1.49 & will give them a spin. So what did I actually go there for? What I actually went there for was some authentic chips and salsa from a deli case, not just from a jar. Two suggestions for conquering the deli case: Learn some basic Spanish numbers from Sesame Street & listen to the people ahead of you- you may be able to pick up on the container size and not make a complete ass out of yourself (Nobody eludes to speaking any English, I barely squeaked by). So I pick up the chips at the end cap by the deli and got the salsa. The salsa verde was superb and hot. The chips were way better than average, but not the gastronomical second coming. I was expecting a little more out of them, because when you see Lime as an ingredient, I think you expect to taste it, but at least there were obviously fresh, but back to the salsa. As I am leaving, the counter I read the ingredients only to find that they mention Knorr as one of them. For those of you that know or don't, Knorr is typically a monosodium glutamate (msg) "flavor enhancer". Many people are allergic to this, and its not that great for you in general (Google it). I have emailed the market to confirm that msg is, or is not, an ingredient in Knorr. We'll see. Last but not least, I did breeze by their butcher shop and cheese selection. If you like meat, I would at least entertain the idea of taking a look as it is vast. The cheeses looked good, but all those salty mexican cheeses kinda taste the same to my novice palette. All in all, a great experience, and they did not seem to have the unruly child problems noted at other mexican emphasis markets I have read reviews about. read more

Good price on produce but don't like that English are in sub titles on the signs. If trying to find an item, it is difficult because, many of the employees don't speak English. & Now..... The main reason I am writing this little rant is because I was making little video shorts with my cell phone, inside the store, when a security guard came up to me in the meat section & told me I couldn't take pictures in the store ??? I told him that was very strange & asked why. He responded that the manager sent him to tell me to cease & desist. I asked him where the manager was so I could ask him why & he gave me 2 names (that I can't recall). I went and found the male manager up front & asked him why I couldn't take any pictures. He looked very irritated & told me that "this is a private place" Astounded at his reply, I asked him again & he said it was a "main office order" me: Please give me their phone number...Said he was busy & would get to it...He actually didn't stall around & within a couple minutes he gave me the"MAIN OFFICE" PHONE #.....
