The quality of food has gone way down since they first opened. Used to stop by for burritos, chilaquilles, and tamales but after today I will not be going back. Over time I have seen a decline in the quality of the food and today was the worst. The chilaquilles looked dry and old so I went for the Tamales instead. They were not any better. The Masa was so dry and hard and the cheese was crumbling apart. Not like they used to be. The tamal de elote tasted old and had a weird color. Couldn't finish either tamale. This is my new market of choice. I'm usually a produce shopper so this place is kinda like hitting the jackpot, especially compared to Ralph's. I'm a happy shopper. I can get double if not triple the produce here than I could at Ralph's. And I would say it's just as good if not better quality. They don't have all the different varieties of fruit but maybe it's just not the season right now. I don't know. They also don't have the different varieties of the packaged salads, I will have to venture over to Ralph's when I'm craving those yummy Dole salads. The panaderia is good, I bought some conchas late (7 pm) and they were super soft and delicious, so they must bake all day long. I picked up a bag of corn tortillas on 2 separate occasions and they were still hot. I haven't bought any meat here, I'm super picky with my meat and like to buy from Costco so more than likely won't ever get to experience ordering from that huge butcher case. I have ordered from the hot deli section though, the carnitas were pretty good, not the best, but when you're in a pinch they'll do. The tamales were dried out, maybe keep an eye out for when they're putting fresh ones in. Pupusas were okay, supposedly they were cheese but I think it was a thin layer of nothin inside. The entire store is very well organized with bright inviting colors everywhere. There is a lot of natural overhead lighting that brightens up the store well. The perimeter of the store has all kinds of pre-cooked food to choose from. There are also many options for marinated meats. I would really consider only a star and a half on this one, but I'll give them credit for being new at this location. The store is beautiful, the deli and kitchen staff we dealt with were rude, apathetic, and lack customer service. In the Panaderia (bakery), we couldn't get the attention of the three staff standing behind the counters. Guess the evening of opening day was just too much for them. In the tortilleria, we stood calling to one of the staff while they kept their backs to us. Only when another customer reached across and tapped her on the shoulder did she turn around and answer our questions. However, both departments were stars above the kitchen staff. We stood waiting at the kitchen (hot deli) display trying to get the attention of the staff working there. Once again, we were met with turned backs. We even took a numbered ticket (97 when the display read 88). No one else had a ticket at all. We finally received service when we once again had to call out. No, they weren't using the tickets. My wife went around the display counters to ask about ordering tamales. On that side, the servicewoman told her to take a number, which we still had in our hands. Of course the staff member turned away and just helped the next person standing there who had no number. I went back before we left - display still on number 88. Today, called in to order some Carne Asada trays for an upcoming party. After a rude hello and two different calls where the staff had no idea what to do with me but to put the phone down and let me listen to the sounds in the background, I gave up. So sad to have waited for so long for the store to open, only to find this kind of reception from the staff. Try other locations, or go back to the other chains. This was my first time at this location and i have to say that I was very happy with the customer service. Halfway through my shopping someone asked me if I needed help finding something. I've been to some places where it seems that the workers are bothered by the customers, so it was nice to have someone offer to help. I also had a good experience with the ladies working in the kitchen. They helped me right away and they did it with a smile. I'll be coming back to this location. read more

I have shopped here ever since moving to Long Beach but I have to say for the past month or two I have been buying chicken from the carnicería and every time I defrost the chicken it smells spoiled or rotten. This is infuriating because I like the store a lot, they have everything I normally need and the employees are very helpful. But spending $20 on rotten chicken every week is horrible! Since this place has opened it has by far been my favorite market. Literally everything you need is here. And the hot food bar omg the chicharrones are bomb! One time I got sucked in to buy a corn bread after they gave me a sample and I couldn't resist. Avocados always seem to be way cheaper than other places and Oh! There's one employee that always stands out when I go for my Agua Fresca fix. Her customer service is spot on. I think her name is Clea or something like that. She is so happy and helpful every time! Their ready-made food reminds me of Whole Foods and their salsas and guacamoles are great because you can customize how much you want to purchase. I got a guanabana and a spinach and pineapple, which the salesgirl said was the most popular. Both were sooooo good! In specific, Joshua, Jenny, Octmarc, Esmeralda and a few more that I can't seem to really remember but work the morning shift are great customer service representatives for northgate. 3.5 just stopped by here today after a family member had gone last week. This used to be an entirely different grocery store years ago before this company moved in so I was curious. When you walk inside you're greeted by an employee and the smell of the bakery to the right. They have beautiful desserts. There were several sample sections today though there was no effort to offer us any samples ... I guess they assumed we didn't speak Spanish? Bummer. Though I will say the checkout worker was very polite. The store is neat and the prices are competitive. I will probably go back for various things. So, I've heard so many good things & wanted to see if they had anything I'd enjoy. They have a good assortment of sweet breads & you better believe my family & I indulged in a few we thought we'd like. Some of the sweet bread options didn't have labels to clearly identify the specific breads so it was kind of like a box of chocolates--you never know what you're gonna get. Luckily, we're self-proclaimed dessert experts so we made some pretty accurate guesses. I enjoyed the vanilla pudding danish but I REALLY loved the cream cheese danish. Okay, I LOVE this market. LOVE LOVE LOVE! Super clean, super organized, and super affordable. Could there be better combination that that? My husband and I try to make a pit stop whenever we're in the area so we can grab some fresh salsa (salsa rancheras is my favorite!), fresh tortillas/chips, and something from the deli (ummm...freshly fried chicharones? I went to check out and not realizing it was a ten items only lane the first thing the cash register employee said was " this is a ten item lane only, do you have ten item ? " I was so surprised she even asked that, instead of trying to be polite and check me out like she suppose to without questioning customer over petty things like that. I go here all the time but this past Saturday I was disappointed in the Aguas Frescas my husband always gets one of Pineapple and it was not natural juice it was mix with jumex or some kind of processed juice. We love Northgate Gonzalez Markets. The food selection is always great, and the produce is fresh and always a good price. This is our go to market. I love the fresh tortillas (they pretty much always get opened and eaten on the drive home), and the variety of salsas, ceviches, and food in general is awesome! They have a full Mexican deli, and seating so that you can eat there. So plan on grabbing a bite to eat, then going to the grocery side and doing some shopping. You won't be disappointed! read more

Northgate Market has always been one of my favorite grocery store to shop at but this particular store was horrible. They advertise green juices....I try to order one and the cashier said they only serve them in the mornings. I thought okay I'll come back tomorrow morning. I go in the next morning and the cashier tells me you have to order it in advance and continues by saying "we don't even have the ingredients" I'm like what? It's a grocery store? I ordered my green juice for the next morning at 8a.m. I walked in at 8:03 to pickup. The cashier walked away after I asked for my juice and disappeared for like 15min??? I started walking around trying to figure out what was going on. The cashier comes back and says sorry but they weren't aware of any green juice and the woman who comes in at 7a.m.to make them is now gone? I was so upset l spoke to the manager and got a refund on my green juice and left and am not planning on going back to this particular store read more

I go to this Northgate on the corner of Cherry and Del Amo mainly for the cooked foods and the extensive selection of tortillas (soft, corn, flour, chips for dipping, chips for making chilaquiles, tostada etc etc). It has an awesome selection of ceviches (shrimp, fish, squid and my favorite, pulpo or octopus). There's also Freshly made carnitas, chicharrón and roast chicken, as well as many kinds of sweet and savory tamales. The Mexican cheese selection - awesome! And then there's a separate counter with a dozen different fruit drinks including horchata and jamaica, though my favorite is the lime juice with chia seeds. There's really nothing missing if you're thinking of putting together an authentic Mexican meal. Warning: There are other Northgate Markets around but they are NOT all the same or comparable.
