The Korean Wings: I was expecting Not your average joes take on Korean fried chicken......It's not a take. It's just not Korean fried chicken. A Korean did not make that nor give NYAJ's that recipe. I lived in Korea for years. I lived in a Korean house and had a Korean family. It's totally Americanized and.....you just can't Americanize a Korean fried chicken wing. Of course I ate it all. Let's talk how cool this restaurant establishment is. You can set up reservation through open table here to secure your spot for lunch or dinner. Just a heads up before arriving to your reservation, come 15 minute ahead of time just to find parking. We got a reservation at 6pm. This restaurant is in a shopping plaza, so parking is going to be hard to find and shuffle through all the people who are walking around and in the middle of the street. It has a lot of parking but it busy in this shopping plaza because it has stores, restaurants, and a movie theater all in one location. Okay let's talk about how cute and modern this restaurant is. It has this nice earthy modern vibe. The table and booths were cool. I highly recommend getting a booth versus a table. The table with the chairs are highly uncomfortable if you have a bad back problem. They do offer patio seating as well and they have fans outside to keep you cool too. Next the menu, it has a bit of everything on the menu. From pizzas, burgers, pasta, and gluten free items to select from. I felt the menu was very limited, especially the gluten free menu. So, we decided to come here because my friend cannot tolerate gluten and has a diary allergy. So I was trying to accommodate her allergies the best I can. Ps. It get super busy here on a Friday night. So, we decided to order drinks. Stella, mixed drinks, etc. The mixed drinks are amazing here. We ordered appetizers but our entrees took forever to come out because we had a movie to go to at 7:25 at Alamo. So, we had to rush eat our food to make it on time to our movie showing. First time visiting and doubt if I'll be back. My party of 3 was seated in the bar. The establishment wasn't busy at all, it took 20 mins to get our drink order taken and another 15 mins to receive our beverages. We asked what were the ingredients of their "veggie" burger, the description only states "house made" patty. We watched our waiter ask 4 different staff members and no one knew the answer. My first visit was last night. I found the atmosphere and service pleasant. They seemed a little understaffed -- wait times with open tables. The menu is eclectic. The dinners were solid, though. We chose this place because the last time we were there, they had these really good little crab cakes. We were disappointed to learn the crab cakes were no longer offered. I ordered shrimp as an appetizer to compensate. When the waiter brought the bread, my sister preferred butter to the parmesan cheese and olive oil provided. She was told they don't have butter. After asking a couple of times we finally got the butter she normally gets. She ordered clam chowder and I ordered nachos. Her clam chowder was basically a bowl of warm milk with diced potatoes floating in it. Thankfully she also ordered the chicken dumplings. They were okay. My nachos had about 3 crispy chips. I came here for an early dinner with my work team on a weekday evening. It wasn't crowded and service was attentive and friendly. Each month they have a small rotating seasonal specials list. I had one of these: the bacon blue cheese flatbread (herb pesto, crispy bacon, caramelized onions, crumbled blue cheese, mozzarella, arugula, and balsamic reduction. It was fresh and delicious! I've visited this restaurant before over the course of many years. The menu is rotating so every few months you always get the option to try something new. The atmosphere is trendy yet cozy. To start, you are given free fresh focaccia bread with a side of oil, garlic, and herbs for dipping. For my entree, I ordered the Smokey Joe Burger. You get a massive portion of food. The burger was great except for the fact that the bbq pulled pork overpowers everything else on the burger. I wish I could have tasted more of what was on the burger and the burger itself. The fries were crispy and delicious. I took a few bites of coleslaw and decided that it wasn't for me. The service was quick and attentive. Whenever I go here I get great service. We came here on a Friday for a late lunch. Not too many people around and we were seated at a booth pretty quickly. Our waitress was very nice and efficient. We ordered the crispy chicken on a salad with avocado, bacon,corn and black beans with a very good Santa Fe ranch dressing. The only reason I am not giving this 5 stars is that the hostess was coming out of the bathroom as I was gong to use the facilities and she didn't say a thing to me and then of course i got in and there was no toilet paper... so annoying! When I came out she was there filling the other bathroom and I pointed it out- you should have told me there was no toilet paper in there. Just an awkward smile.. so annoying. We have recently returned to the area and fondly remembered NYAJ as one of our favorite places to eat. From 2014 through 2018, the service was phenomenal, the foccocia bread always warm and fresh, and the entirety of the restaurant clean. Unfortunately NYAJ falls short on every measure we look for in a good restaurant. When we walked in, the hostess was so high she couldn't remember which table she penciled us in to sit at, and wandered back and forth between two tables until we began seating ourselves. The table has a sticky residue on its entire surface, and the highchairs brought to our table had food stuck to them. There was a black hair in the middle of our appetizer plates, and the bathrooms were less than pleasant to use. The hostess was kind enough, but she was one person with what looked to be the entirety of the restaurant. The foccocia bread brought to the table was cold and stale, and for my family of six, they brought one basket of four pieces of bread. We had the caeser salad, which was absolutely drowned in dressing. There was enough dressing for four times the amount of lettuce. Our food was cold when brought to us; my boys had the kids burger and pizza, and my wife and I split the mango pizza. The taste was ok, but we should have gone to Brixx for good pizza as it is right down the road. If you are looking for a place to eat, Stone Bridge has a lot better options. I would eat at the wegmans buffet before I choose NYAJ again. read more

This review is focused primarily on their service, or lack thereof. On a regular Thursday night after work, I stopped in for dinner because I wanted to try a new place. I was seated immediately, but then the lack of service became apparent. I sat for 20 minutes until anyone even walked by my table. You read this correctly. Twenty minutes without seeing a single restaurant employee. As more time passed I was debating whether I should just get up and leave and go to the Thai place across the street, which I should have done. So after 25 minutes, a server and her trainee finally came to take my drink order. I absolutely did not care for the server's attitude. She was petite, had short dark curly hair, sporting a fake insincere smile and radiating a snippy, catty attitude. The trainee, on the other hand, presented herself well, and was professional and well spoken. She obviously did not need training. They actually looked surprised when I told them I was ready to order. After 25 minutes I should be ready to order. The food came out timely and was very good. However, I didn't realize that not only would I not ever see my server again, but trying to find someone -- anyone -- to bring me the check would be another 20 + minutes. Thankfully the trainee brought the check, probably because I was half out of my seat looking around for someone to help me. By the way, since no one ever came back to my table, my Diet Coke glass sat empty and was never refilled. During my entire visit, I looked around at other tables to see if they were experiencing the same poor service. Nearly every table had empty glasses, and people were looking around for a server, who came out once during my 1 hour visit. It looked like no one got drink refills, or God forbid, had a problem with their order. I was thinking... I sure hope no one wants dessert because you'll be here until closing time just to get it. So here's the bottom line. I spent twice as much time waiting for service than I did actually eating. I don't care how good the food is, bad service or in this case, nonexistent service, ruins a restaurant's reputation and discourages patrons from returning. Will I ever give this place another try? The salad itself was overdressed to the point that there was - without exaggeration - about 1/8th of a cup of dressing pooled at the bottom of the salad. I'm not going to lie, the dressing had a good flavor, but there was just too much. I would highly recommend you get the dressing on the side if you want to try this salad. The burgers: at a price point of $20+ by the time you add cheese and bacon (or any other extras), my husband and son both said it was just ok. They both agreed the meat was not very flavorful. In the end, the restaurant's name seems a bit ironic since it is indeed average at best and there are certainly other places with similar price points with much better quality. read more

I sat outside and it was really nice. The server Stefano was great and super friendly. I had the bang bang shrimp appetizer which was delicious and the lobster roll as my main dish. The lobster was fresh and tasted great the only con was that the roll was really wet. The bread was toasted and buttered to perfection but the Mayo based "sauce" that the lobster was tossed in overpowered the lobster and made the roll soggy befor I could finish it. While the menu changed a bit like many places post-COVID 19, and the prices are much higher with inflation, supply chain challenges and other higher costs like supplies and labor, this restaurant continues to provide good and interesting food, as well as repeat customers like me whenever I'm in the area. The food is presented nicely and tastes good. The prices are on the moderate to high side, so I need to choose what to eat after checking my budget. During my last two visits I had the ahi tuna taco appetizer and a mostly veggie pizza which included anchovy i asked for, thus making it a non- veggie pizza. Both were good. I also had the tomato basil soup which was good but too high a cost for me to purchase in the future. I recommend this establishment. read more

I usually steer clear from chain restaurants but heard great things about Not Your Average Joe's and decided to try it out right before the pandemic hit. I've tried going before but they're always super packed! I was only able to get a seat on a Saturday evening due to the pandemic. Anyway, I ordered the tuna wontons, chicken piccata and a drink from the bar. Everything tasted amazing, I don't have a single complaint. The menu seemed to have a ton of unique selections. Dined in this past Sunday. Had a short wait to be seated, maybe 5 mins so not bad. The server was so nice and accommodating. I can't recall her name but she was a middle aged, Hispanic woman with an accent. My date and I split the chicken dumplings, very tasty and warm. He had a basic burger and fries. I had the super crunch salad and opted for romaine instead of spinach. Both were soo delicious!! I would eat that salad daily if I could but don't live in northern Va! We stopped here for dinner after a day of driving from Pittsburgh, PA. I found it on Yelp because it was convenient to our hotel. The restaurant is bigger that I expected inside and had nice decor. We put our name in for a table and were told a 15 minute wait. I felt bad because there were some really rude guests complaining to the hostesses. Our wait really was only 15 minutes and then we were seated. We were greeted right away by a great waiter, Tyler, who was also from Pittsburgh. He had a waitress with him who I assume he was training. They both did a great job. I had a glass of wine and my boyfriend had a cocktail after our day of traveling. The complimentary focaccia bread with garlic cheese dipping oil was awesome! I really loved it. After browsing the menu and Yelp, I went with the ahi tuna salad. It was a large portion and the salad and tuna were fresh. I recommend getting the dressings on the side, because the one was a little thick and sweet like I suspected. My boyfriend enjoyed his burger, but his side caesar salad was drenched in caesar dressing. Overall a great experience. As the name implies, this isn't just another run-of-the-mill chain restaurant. If you are looking for delicious food, attentive service, and a fun ambiance--you've got Not Your Average Joe's. So what makes them stand above the rest? Most places just give you a loaf of bread or some stale rolls to go with your meal. Here, you get soft pieces focaccia with a side of oil, cheese, and red pepper flakes. The food is always so fresh and made to order. They also have seasonal menus and special events, like Lobster Bash. (The lobster rolls are ridiculously delicious and stuffed with big pieces of lobster instead of cheap filler.) They've always been spot-on with our menu substitutions and cooking preferences, too. They also have specials throughout the week. (My favorite is Wine Wednesday: 50% off bottles of wine.) Our service has always been fantastic here. Michael always seemed to be our server when we first started visiting, but he's moving into management now. (He was a great server, so I'm sure he will do well as part of the restaurant leadership.) Now we try to get Ron when he's working in the evening. He's hilarious and very attentive. The decor is pretty hip. There are all sorts of light fixtures, wooden tables, and comfy booths. Been here a bunch of times but haven't been since the beginning of Covid. Was looking for a burger so decided to place an online order. We got two medium rare burgers, one with avocado and caramelized onions, the other cheddar, mushrooms and onion strings. We also got their sheet pan nachos cause we got hungry. Pickup only took 20 min. The burgers were a lot bigger than I remembered but they were so good. Cooked exactly how we wanted and super juicy, wish the bun could hold up though. Lots of shoestring fries which I also love, decently crisp. The nachos carried a lot of toppings, some got a little soggy but still pretty great. We also got a bag of their focaccia and their dip which is a great tough. I look forward to coming back more often to grab their other signature dishes, and more burgers of course. read more
