Yes, there are drinks, and savory food, and other tempting things in and behind the bakery cases. What I witnessed this morning between the shop workers and the customers gave me something to meditate on. I overheard the people in the shop talking to each other about what ultimately resulted in an act of kindness for another customer. What transpired happened over the course of a couple of minutes, but it was done so simply and quietly as to not draw much fanfare. It seems like these small acts of generosity happen regularly, and it's simply reassuring to see the goodness in people that we may not have normally noticed. I suppose there's something mystical and magical when good business owners draw in good staff and draw in good customers. Cheers, all!

Most of what we get here in the States is sad, bland, and bloated with ingredients that sound like they belong in a chemistry lab. But this? Wildflour Artisan Sourdough? This is the kind of bread that makes you stop mid-bite and go, "Damn." First off, the loaf is beautiful. Not "oh that's nice" beautiful! It's rustic, crackly, hand-scored, I'm-gonna-take-a-photo-and-stare-at-it beautiful. The crust is deeply caramelized with a rich, golden-brown color, and it has a bold ear (that signature raised edge from the scoring). The scoring itself is almost too pretty to eat. A delicate leaf pattern that's both rustic and artistic, dusted lightly with flour to make it pop. Maybe give it a little character as well. The loaf has that satisfying contrast between the crackly, blistered crust and the clean, intentional scoring. It looks like something that belongs in a Parisian bakery window or a still life painting about comfort and obsession. You can feel the love that went into it. And you can taste it. Yeah... this isn't just bread. It's craft. And the baker... yeah, she's not just slinging carbs for profit. She sent me an email breaking down the process, and I swear it read like a love letter to wheat. Organic everything. Fresh-milled Rouge de Bordeaux wheat from a regenerative farm. Cold fermentation for up to 32 hours. A rye starter that's alive and thriving. This is three-ingredient poetry. And that she could talk about bread all day. What hit me, though? I asked her about nut allergies because my daughter's allergic, and most people either freeze up or give you a half-answer. She was thoughtful, honest, and admitted that cross-contamination might be a concern. Didn't brush it off, didn't try to sell me. I could tell she just cared. That alone would've sold me, but the bread did too. Bottom line: if you've ever wanted to know what sourdough should taste like, this is it. A little crusty, a little chewy, full of tang and soul. And yeah--I could probably talk about this bread all day too.

I ordered that and several of the dinner rolls and it was all absolutely delicious! Wildflour is a small locally owned bakery that takes orders via the website and allows order pickups every Friday either at local coffee shop Grey & Cash from 8am-2pm or a "porch pickup" from 2pm-8pm. They're also at the Monrovia Friday farmers market occasionally as well. The owner, Karen, is very friendly and communicative and helped me with my confusion over my dinner rolls order lol. My pickup was ready right on time and everything was perfect. The dinner rolls are huge and dense but soft when you bite into them with a lovely light flavor - they're versatile and went well with all of our savory dinner items as well as the leftover cranberry sauce. But the pumpkin-shaped sourdough loaf stole the show for sure - not only is it beautiful but it's some of the most delicious sourdough bread I've ever had - texture and taste were flawless. It's velvety soft inside with a nicely crisp crust on the outside - not too chewy and a perfect hint of the "sour" that you get in sourdough. She offers many other loaf styles as well and her prices are very reasonable given the quality and level of organic ingredients used. Her website states that they source locally, use a variety organic/heritage/ancient grains, and mill the grains themselves which I love. I've been scouring the area for an all natural, local baker like this - like the way things used to be done haha! I've definitely found my local go-to baker and intend on getting my bread here going forward! Highly recommend!!

Super excited because the mini fruit tarts are going to look amazing on my newly purchased dessert tray! I was feeling a bit sleepy so I decided to fuel up & eat breakfast while I was there. I ordered a Vanilla Latte & a side order of 3 eggs + Sausage Links. If you're a big eater and want the additional potatoes and pancakes, I recommend paying a few dollars more and ordering the Breakfast platter. The Vanilla Latte came in a paper cup (a bit bummed out by not being able to take a more IG worthy picture of that), but it actually tasted really good! Same with the sausage links - it was probably one of the best tasting ones I've had for breakfast in a while. Aside from their wide selection of pastries and food options, their customer service was phenomenal. Every customer that walked through the door was greeted upon arrival and thanked on their way out. The restaurant was very clean and the cakes looked so beautiful behind the glass case. I had a pleasant experience today at Merengue Bakery & Cafe and can't wait to come back soon to try a slice of their chocolate cake!

However, the lady at the counter informed us they would not have any ready until 2 PM and was quite dismissive and short with us. I was next in line, it was now the second person at the counter helping me, ( male ) once he knew I was looking for a guava cake, he immediately went to the back going out of his way to check and ensure we took a fresh guava cake home right then and there. He saved Mother's Day !!! I must also mention Danny and Lissette are amazing every time we order cakes for family events. This time I was on my way home and came to Monrovia location. It is a small location, but the Staff is so much more attentive and friendlier here. SAMPLES!! Stephen is the sweetest! Julia helped me pick out some good pieces!! I don't even know the names of what I got, but they are my new favorites! One less star just cuz the prices keep going up.
