My wife's necklace broke and I took it in. Charged me a decent price. Wife picked it up. I got off work came home and saw what they did and was disgusted with they're work. All they did was melt the chains together. It was a small chain but who ever made it linked the loops together and why couldn't this store do the same thing? They don't have the tools or what they should've just told me they couldn't do it, and now I feel like they just wanted the money. These guys are great and 110% professional! I went in with a ring that was sized 6.5 and needed to be reduced to 3.75. Not only that, i needed the ring same day! Other places needed several days and/or would charge over $100! These guys said they can size any rings within 2 hours and only charged me $42! I had a little trouble with a jewelry project I was trying to complete across three jewelers over the course of the last year(crazy I know). Tor recommended a course of action that was inexpensive but classy and right on target. I now have a beautiful 18 k white gold cross with a bale that was re-worked to bring it more to scale. Also, I've wanted a white gold 18K chain to go with it- but somehow this seems to be a very difficult feat to accomplish. I have very substantive gold and other jewelry - so I asked Tor what he though about completely coating my 14k yellow gold/white gold chain with rhodium. Anyway, he agreed and let me say-problem solved! He also re-worked some of the Rhodium on a very nice Ceylon sapphire 18k gold ring and a 14k Sherry Topax oversized ring. My family went to Nupen for decades, literally. We started going to them when they were still inside Fair Oaks Mall, next to Woodward and Lorthrop's. My mother would hold off on getting her jewelry fixed until we were back in the area (I grew up abroad), since we trusted them so completely. I used to recommend them regularly to folks who were looking for custom work or repairs. So, going to them for my custom wedding set was a no brainer, until we got it back. The workmanship was so shoddy that stones started to fall out within weeks of getting it back. When we took it back to them for fixing, Tor actually said "did I even make this? It doesn't look like my work. This is badly done." We had to convince them that this was his work so that they would service it. He did so with a really awful attitude, like we were making him fix someone else's problem. We had a few more stones fall out because the repairs were poorly done, so I just had my mother take the set to be recast in Colombia with my cousin (also a professional jeweler). My cousin came back with the design I wanted and asked me if I knew that most of the accent stones were CZ, not diamonds and that the gold was 10k white gold, not 14k white gold (the source gold we sent them was 18k yellow gold, which we agreed to melt down into 14k white gold). We knew for a fact that the source stones were all diamonds, as they were certified rings we received from our parents (heirlooms to be melted into our wedding rings). I considered taking them to small claims court over it, but I had just had my son when this was all discovered, so life with an infant got in the way. I wish I could post pictures to show how bad this work was. In general, switching stones and karat weight is a cardinal sin in jewelry. Tor's dad was a really, really talented jeweler and it's sad that the business has gone so downhill. read more

I had Yelped several places in Fairfax in order to have my wedding and engagement rings made larger (after 28 years), and it turned out that this place right near my office is a gem (no pun intended). My mission was to help my son, who is currently in Afghanistan for a year, purchase an engagement ring for his girl friend. After shopping the area, chain stores and small stores, I happened upon Nupen Jewelers from searching highly rated stores on the Internet . From my first step in the door, till the last step out of their door- weeks later, I was comfortable and confident that I had chosen the right place to begin and complete my task. My son had a particular style of ring that he wanted to give his girlfriend - a sapphire and diamond combination. Diamond engagement rings are abundant at most stores, but blue sapphires are not. All of the staff members in the store joined me in finding "just the right" style and stone for the ring. They showed me styles, beyond the obvious, to consider; modeled the ring, placed several orders for additional gems, until the perfect sapphire was found! We had to factor in the time difference between Afghanistan and VA., as well as the store hours and my availability to make contact with him. I was able to show him styles and stones through live chatting, camera shots and emails. Nupen Jewelers' staff, especially Tor, was extremely patient with the process and use of technology. Tor went out of his way to order sapphires from as far away as NY and Thailand, looking for just the right shade, cut and quality that we were looking for. He patiently discussed all of the terms, and details involved in characteristics of gems with my son and me. My son is thrilled with the final sapphire choice. The ring is exquisite!!! Tor, at Nupen Jewelers, is also a very talented craftsman. My wedding band set had a distortion that I was told I was stuck with. Tor corrected it, replated the white gold and cleaned it.
