The food presentation is amazing, but the quality of the fish and the service is sus. Ordered the omakase and got food poisoning. When we called to talk to the manager for some sort of discount on our $200+ meal we got the runaround, "oh they're not here", then missed their phone call. Called back and received the same, "managers not here" again. What is there to talk about? Your food made me sick, my wife didn't get it as bad as I did, but the phone tag nonsense means I'll never go back there and will tell my friends to avoid. Not worth it. Since I can't reply to this business owner I have to edit my review* I've eaten at some of the best sushi restaurants in the world, been to Japan twice because of my love for sushi. I know sushi. Multiple dishes we ate at this restaurant were borderline, fishy, low quality. I hadn't eaten all day before eating here. The owner can say whatever they want, but making excuses and trying to make the customer wrong isn't a good look. Maybe I should dispute my credit card for the lack of service and follow through, or perhaps I should call the city and let them know the restaurant made me sick. I tried to give them the opportunity to make it right, now I guess I take it further. Located in the Quail Hill plaza, tucked away in the corner. It's one of those sushi places that seems to want to be higher-end but misses the mark. Everything about this place feels neither here nor there, including their overpriced sushi and mediocre service (our waitress was not pleasant or friendly at all). Their chirashi bowl was quite good with a decent variety of fish and generous portions, but we were very disappointed in their deluxe sashimi where they doused super thinly sliced fish in overpowering sauce. I really don't like when places put sriracha on sushi - are they trying to mask mediocre fish? These were close in price too, so definitely choose the chirashi bowl. Great OC Restaurant Week Find! Wanted to celebrate my friend's belated birthday with an OC restaurant week tasting menu, and we were pleasantly surprised. It started amazing with the salmon tartare and scallop sunomono - which was fresh and perfectly vinegary. The signature sashimi was next and probably my favorite. Such unique fish options, all so fresh and perfectly balanced. Another favorite was the seafood hot pot, which was flavorful and the hot dish we needed, since the restaurant was a bit cold, but definitely rather be in a cold sushi restaurant than a hot one. We came during their Happy Hour (Sun-Thu from 5pm-6:30pm, with 20% off alcohol and appetizers) and ordered a couple of beers and some agedashi tofu. For entrees, my husband got the five hand roll set, while I opted for the grilled yellowtail collar. The fish in the rolls was fresh and my portion of yellowtail collar quite generous. The decor is a bit like stepping back into the 80's, with its use of blue lights and neon, along with some smooth jazz playing. I can't believe I didn't know about this place sooner! It's in a pretty hidden spot but once you walk in, it's so pretty. The service here is phenomenal -- the chefs were very nice + our servers are super helpful. It is a bit pricier than most places but I'd say it's 1000% worth it. The fish quality is the best I've ever had. You don't have any of that fishy taste so every piece is super enjoyable. The whole experience took about 2 hours with each course coming out after you've finished the previous. From the time I entered the restaurant until the end of our meal, I had the most hospitable, delicious, and spectacular time eating at O Fine Japanese Cuisine. Our servers, Iga and John, were great! They served us with smiles and a friendly attitude. Our gracious servers catered to our needs and checked in with us throughout the entire meal. They refilled our drinks constantly, asked us how everything was going, and made sure we were taken care of. I especially had a great conversation with Iga about her nails and how gorgeous they were. I'm a nail person myself, so it was really fun to spend a few moments admiring each other's nail arts. But I digress! We started off our night with a bottle of the Yuzu Bloom, a floral liqueur mixed with sake. The color was so pretty, and I'm a sucker for cute and pretty things. The bottle that the sake was mixed in reminded me of a lil pink potion, teehee. The alcohol itself was yummy! The tart citrus flavor is tempered by the smooth sake but neither flavor was too overpowering. I'm not really an alcohol person, nor do I claim to be an expert on it... But I do know what I like, and this I liked! Unfortunately, I only took a few sips because I was the designated driver for the night. The rest of my companions had no problem drinking down the rest of the bottle. We all enjoyed it thoroughly! ;) Onto the food. We started off with a couple of premium chirashi bowls, which came with miso soup and salads. And might I just say? It was divine! The sashimi selection on the bed of fluffy sushi rice was to die for, fresh as can be. The ankimo had a full, complex flavor to it that left me wanting more. The shrimp head was fried to perfection, a crunchy bite from start to finish. The blue crab had me clacking my nails together in a crab happy dance. The toro (my last bite of the dish) was fatty and filling and melted so easily in my mouth. The other sashimi bits and pieces added together made for a perfectly balanced bowl. The deliciousness of it all almost left wanting more, but thankfully the rest of our dishes were more than enough to fill that void. Along with the chirashi bowl we also got the Crispy Lobster Roll, Baked Lobster Roll, and the "O" Roll. Where do I even start? The crispy lobster roll was a joyfully crunchy bite filled with real lobster atop the sushi roll, with the rest of the sushi ingredients all rolled together in a soft soy paper that balances everything out. The baked lobster had a similar, yet different vibe, but just as scrumptious. The lobster shell decor helped to elevate the dish too. And the "O" roll had me making a similar shape with my mouth after that first bite. The freshness of the ingredients wrapped around thinly sliced cucumber as opposed to regular seaweed sent me to the beautiful ocean. What an ebb and flow of fresh fish contained within the confines of that snappy cucumber. It might have been my favourite bite yet! There is not an aspect of this fine establishment that has gone unturned and neglected. From the staff to the service to the fold itself, all stars all around. Food O Fine's selection of sushi is abundant with delicious gems that do not disappoint. We started with the Baked Lobster Roll which came with a beautiful presentation of the lobster tail they used to create the rolls on the side. The roll itself was rich with savory decadence from the lobster itself that was wonderfully complemented with the roll underneath. The side of mushrooms that is served with it is no throwaway side either. When paired with the roll, the mushrooms marry incredibly well to the slight sweetness of the lobster. We then moved on to the crispy lobster roll which we assumed would be similar to the baked lobster roll. Not so! It was surprising how the crispy texture truly transformed the experience. The juxtaposition between the crunchy lobster with the soft roll underneath created a truly enjoyable texture experience in the mouth. Not to mention the delicious flavor the lobster provides on its own. We closed our meal with the premium chirashi bowl and the only thing I could think of was, "Wow!" Where most other sushi restaurants would settle for providing lower quality fish in their chirashi bowls, O Fine refuses to cut corners. Everything from the toro down to the sweet shrimp was a burst of flavor that had us wanting more. One thing I rarely do is use ginger to cleanse my palate between fish, but as we were digging into our bowl, I was taking bites of ginger between every fish to truly taste the richness of every piece. We even had some surprise fish in the bowl! I have never had ankimo before and it was absolute delicious in the chirashi bowl. Service The service at O Fine was absolutely incredible to match the food. We were served by Iga and John and they were attentive and very friendly. There was not a moment where a glass was unfilled nor an finished plate was left on the bar. Many restaurants would do well to learn from the servers at O Fine. Ambience As you can see from the photos, the ambience at O Fine is positively beautiful. We were sat at the bar and were enamored by the blue accents on the Barton. The ambience is not just limited to the bar. When you walk in, you are met with a very modern, yet warm and welcoming luxurious feel. O Fine was a wonderful experience from start to finish. I hadn't been there for more than half a year, and last week I went back with two friends for dinner, but we were extremely disappointed. First, we ordered two sushi rolls and the fish tasted very fishy and not fresh at all. We also ordered their signature 12-piece sashimi platter, which used to be a must-order for me, but the taste was completely different from before. Some of the sauces were extremely spicy, to the point that you couldn't even taste the natural flavor of the fish. I'm honestly very disappointed with this restaurant. I originally wanted to give them feedback, but the servers were busy chatting and didn't pay attention to the customers' needs at all. Forget it -- I won't be coming back again.
