You ever come across a place that's so good you kind of don't want to share it with the world - but it's too good not to? Well, that's Oaka Sushi House and their sushi for me. We stumbled on this spot randomly while looking for a new sushi restaurant on the southwest side of town, and I'm still so glad we did. I could go on and on about the staff and how kind they are - especially the sushi chefs and Chef Larry, who are absolute masters of their craft - but I want to focus on the food. Inside is well decorated with many seating options at tables or the bar. If you're a sports person, they typically have football and basketball on the TVs inside. I've had sushi abroad, at high-end omakase spots, fresh tuna cuttings, and just about everything in between, and honestly, Oaka might be some of the best. When we first started coming here, we ordered off the menu, but now we sit at the bar and let the chefs take the lead. They'll create rolls/bites based on what we're craving or what they remember we've loved before, which makes the experience feel really personal. For AYCE it's just under $35 for dinner and I think $29 for lunch! Some of my favorite rolls still are the Blue Diamond Roll - light (no rice!), crunchy, slightly sweet, and perfectly balanced | Christmas Roll - crunchy, creamy, tangy, topped with salmon, jalapeño slices, and citrus zest | Pink Lady Roll - light, bite-sized, wrapped in pink soy paper and sometimes arranged in a cute heart shape | Crunch Roll - classic, perfectly crispy, with shrimp tempura inside and crunch out ..and if you're feeling adventurous, you can always ask them to make something off-menu based on flavors you like - they're incredibly accommodating! Just a heads up: it's a smaller spot with a limited staff, so if things take a little longer on a busy night (especially with LOTS of to-go orders), it's worth the wait. You can always call ahead to check how busy they are. Overall, Oaka is one of those rare places that keeps you coming back - not just for the food, but for the people and experience. Located on Blue Diamond & Cimarron within a strip mall amongst other awesome businesses. You could literally get a massage, a mani/pedi, and sushi back to back if you wanted to!! The food was absolutely delicious and SO fresh! Everything also came out so fast, less than 10 minutes after we ordered. The price was reasonable; we paid $90 including tip for 3 sushi rolls, 2 nigiri, 1 appetizer, 2 non-alcoholic drinks, and small dessert. We could've definitely ordered more but we were stuffed! Picked up dinner tonight from Oaka Sushi, and eh not too happy with it honestly. Went in to pick up my order and no one acknowledged me or say a hello. The lady up front finally looked towards me and said "name" and I told her my name. She grabbed a bag and plopped it down at the front counter, and turned away..no eye contact, not a word, which I thought was quite rude.. I told her thank you and have a goodnight and she said "you too." Not so good service. Now onto the food.. Ordered the oaka roll, Japanese lasagna, crunch roll and the golden knight roll. Japanese lasagna roll wasn't prepared how it normally is. There were tiny little rectangular cubes of cream cheese on top, normally it's melted generously over the sushi..tonight it was lacking. The rice was a bit hard and crunchy, eh okay. Everything seemed just okay until trying the golden knight roll. Something seemed definitely off and the color of the Cajun albacore was a bit on the brown darker side. It had a funky weird texture, fishy smell and was quite mushy. This probably shouldn't be served to customers. I ate some of it and it didn't taste good. Raw fish shouldn't taste like that. I took the rest of the Cajun albacore off to toss away. The first time I came here, the food was actually really good that's why I decided to come back. The second time, it was just okay the food wasn't nearly as good as my first visit. I decided to give it one more try today as my 3rd visit, thinking maybe it was just an off day before, but honestly, it was the same experience as the second time, maybe even worse. The food took longer to come out even though there were only three customers inside. The shumai was soggy, and the nori on my hand roll was soft and chewy instead of crisp. The first visit the nori had different color more like a light greenish brown, crisp, and delicious. The quality and service clearly wasn't the same since my first visit. Also on my second visit, the older lady that served us was also a bit rude and gave off a strange, annoyed vibe. Overall, there's just zero consistency here, and that's really disappointing. I came here for lunch around 1pm, and it wasn't busy at all. I was seated at the bar. You can do a La carte, or AYCE. I chose AYCE lunch for $26. I thought the portions were perfect. They're small, which means you have more choices to order because you're less full! Everything was delicious. I got half orders of the white tiger roll and the hot night roll. AYCE sushi! I hate when I look for AYCE sushi and can't find any information on Yelp. This is definitely AYCE sushi. Seems like new places in our area since i didn't see this place before. Very nice interior kind of hipster. When we got there it was 4 tables occupied everything else was available. As soon as we got there we start to order appetizers and salads coz I hate when I have to wait in between orders. I always start with miso soup and seaweed and cucumber salad. All the salad were super small but super tasty. They have specials on menu which you only can have one order. And those are must try. Super delicious, I remember one with jalapeño which was great. Was getting off of work and trying to find a sushi spot that wasn't fully booked. Everything off of Durango was so this was the last place on my route back home to stop by. Came inside and had a nice talk to one of the chefs or owner on the way out. Got the AYCE with Ono, ahi, and my favorite, their unagi. Every where I go for AYCE to get unagi has a char-look on it but they had the look and texture of it. The uni and half rolls were delicious too. I do like how the nigiri are smaller than some places so can eat and pick more variety. Was getting close to closing but mahalos to everyone there. **I visited Oaka Sushi House but I could not check in because of the poor cell reception in the area** I love sushi and I found this place via DoorDash, which isn't too far from my boyfriend's house. We have a friend that used to live around the area and I never knew that this was here until DoorDash recommended it to us. Oh boy, I'm happy that we made this discovery. We placed our order via DoorDash and had it scheduled to be picked up in a half hour. Our order consisted of the following - Gyoza (5pcs), Mountain's Edge Roll (8pcs), Salmon Lover's Roll (8pcs), and California Crunch Roll (8pcs). Our order was ready right when we drove to the restaurant to pick it up. The Gyoza had a crispy, crunchy taste to it, and is always my go-to appetizer anytime I go to a Japanese restaurant. The Salmon Lover's Roll, which were topped with a lemon wedge, were full of flavor. The California Crunch Roll, which my boyfriend and I shared, were obviously very crunchy. Sushi rolls are always the best when they're fried! My boyfriend said that his Mountain's Edge Roll, which were topped with crab cakes, was delicious and tender. Did not even know this place existed! Fresh fish, creative rolls, clean venue. What more can you ask for??? Three of us and all you can eat sushi. We smashed some nigiri and some rolls. The server was efficient but not super talkative. No problem with the service, just used to a more interactive engagement. I will be returning to this sushi joint. We were very pleasantly surprised by this place, and at the "all-you-can-eat" option! Oftentimes, AYCE places bring your food so slowly that you get full too fast and don't order more. Or the food is not the best quality. This is not at all the case here! Our party of 5 came in for an early weeknight dinner. Their menu is huge, with so many different rolls and such to choose from. Because we were starving, we immediately ordered probably 18 rolls, calamari and shrimp tempura, an Unagi Roll, a Smoke Salmon nigiri, and some house salads. Best of my recollection after such a bacchanalian feast, these are the rolls we got: - Philadelphia Roll - TNT Roll - Kamikaze Roll - one of our favs, loved the torched salmon topping - Crunch Roll - Salmon Lover Roll - Hero Roll - Dynamite Roll - another favorite, loved the crunchy outside - Spider Roll (2 orders) - Alaskan Roll (4 orders!) - Golden Knights Roll - Orange County Roll (2 orders) - Eel Tempura Roll I thought the house salads were just ok. The dressing wasn't my favorite, and the lettuce didn't seem like ones you usually get in Japanese restaurants. We immediately got 4 of the rolls to start with, along with the tempura, and the others followed pretty quickly. I think there was a little break, and then we got the last 4-5. (The break probably happened when more customers came in, or they had a bunch of to-go orders.) Never a time when we were without rolls! I don't think we actually ordered a second round - thought about it, but were still working on the final rolls, and decided to hold off - was a good idea, as we were stuffed by the end. We ordered fresh wasabi as well, and this was such a treat! I'd never had this before, and it was a game-changer. A nice hot, but not lingering hot. Regarding level of spice, the spicy rolls were spicy, but really not so bad. The exceptions was the one with Tabasco sauce (can't remember which) - that had a good burn to it! Oaka is probably at the bottom of the Japanese sushi spots I like. I have this thing of determining if a sushi place is Korean or Japanese. It's a pretty standard spot. Nothing special. I don't think it'll be anyone's favorite sushi spot in town. The menu is very small for appetizers and for nigiri. They have the standard nigiri options. Lunch and Dinner are the same except for uni and sweet shrimp and like four special dinner rolls/items. Rice to fish ratio is on the better side of the spectrum. Rolls aren't overly large so you can try multiple rolls without getting too full. So good roll size. Dessert selection is small. At lunch it's ice cream only and then at dinner they have a mocha option. I think they need more servers than they had available because they were slow to getting to tables to take orders or take finished plates. Not a big deal, just except a more relaxed and longer meal. Nothing was stand out about the place or the items they offer. I'd give it a 3.5 but it's COVID and I'll round up to 4. They followed distancing guidelines and mask mandate. There wasn't anything I remember ordering that I ordered more than once. I probably wouldn't return here unless I really didn't want to travel to somewhere better. How did I not know about this place? I came here after the world reopened to enjoy a nice meal out (with a mask) and feel a bit normal. I had passed this place dozens of times as it happens to be in the same plaza where I take my dog son for his baths. Finally, I went, and was pleasantly surprised. I made a reservation for me and my mates and were sat promptly at that time. Our servers were super nice and recommended some awesome sake! They made sure to check on our orders multiple times and never hesitated to make sure that we were doing good and happy with our experience. For apps we had the mussels, calamari, tempura shrimp, gyoza, and takoyaki. It was all really good. Especially the gyoza. For the main event.... Sushi! We tried several rolls and nigiri. Hole in the wall sushi place tucked into a strip mall in Mountains Edge. I have never been there before, but it was a sweet surprise! The interior has nice decorations, good lighting, and its very clean. The service is very friendly. They are super fast, accommodating, and very knowledgeable of the menu.
