I had high hopes for the red velvet cupcake I got from here, but I was let down tremendously. Also, the customer service is severely lacking. The cashier rang up the wrong items and overcharged me. When she realized that she made a mistake she handed me the correct items, but didn't offer a refund or receipt. I had to ask for a receipt and that's when she processed the refund, however the refunded amount was still way below the amount I was actually owed. Oakleaf has been my favorite neighborhood bakery for awhile, I've lived in the area for a couple years and have frequently stopped by for pastries and coffee (all of which have been delicious, and the service pleasant). I finally had the chance to order a cake from them for my mom's birthday - and definitely will be doing so again in the future! I thought the beautiful cakes were well priced, they were really responsive to my order from that I had placed, and were attentive to making sure the design was what I had in mind. My mom loved it and it tasted amazing. My whole family was impressed, and the fact that it came from a local bakery made the experience more special. While planning a company event, a co-worker mentioned Oakleaf to me in passing. After checking out their website, I was convinced that we needed a custom cake in our lives. From the get go the staff was super professional, very friendly and just plain great to work with. They had really good suggestions, worked within my budget and best of all, our end product was flipping incredible. I asked them to make our custom cake in the shape of the product my company makes and offered to send over a prototype to ensure accuracy. I was told they didn't need that - they had a very good idea based off of our website. That scared me but they insisted and sure enough, the end product was perfection. I've been here several times since I live across the street. Cupcakes are pretty good. But the cakes could use some work. I've had 2 cakes here in the last year. Both have been dry. Yesterday was the first time throwing out almost an entire cake. We got the red velvet and it was just dry inside. It was beautiful though. I do not recommend their vegan sweets(which is the only reason I knocked a star off). But definitely try everything non-vegan in this bakery, you will NOT be sorry! Love this little cafe. I like to study here sometimes because it's quiet. They only really offer sweet treats, so if you're looking for a sandwich, you won't have any luck here. But, the goodies I've had were excellent. I've tried a variety of their cupcakes and muffins. Also, they have great options for vegans too! The vegan options are just as flavorful and satisfying. The prices are pretty on par with other similar places like Pavement or even Starbucks. The muffin I had recently was $2.75. One might think it's pricey, but it is comparable with other places. My daughter graduated from Boston University last weekend and we had a family celebration on Saturday night. I ordered a predesigned cake for $125 from Oakleaf. They insisted on payment a week in advance, confirmed the spelling and message on the cake, they then delivered the most UNFESTIVE and BORNING cake I have ever seen. I will attach a photo and you tell me if this looks like a celebratory cake? I TRUSTED them to make a gorgeous cake because they show beautiful cakes on the website. Instead of being so concerned with my payment, they should have been more concerned with making something they would be proud of. The taste of the cake was fine. Why didn't they send me a photo of what they were going to design for my approval? For our October Wedding we wanted a simple, delicious cake and that's exactly what Oakleaf Cakes delivered! Their buttercream frosting is so light and delicious and the cake is very moist. The cake is so good my husband drove 2 hours out of his way the year after our wedding to get me a small birthday cake of the same flavor as our wedding cake! It was awesome! We had their Apple Spice Cake and their Pumpkin Cake with Cinnamon buttercream. It's a shame we live so far away now. As far as delivery for our wedding everything went smoothly. Is my review removed by somebody? I went to oakleaf on 17th March 2014 and written a review and it's removed! Anyway, I'll still want to share my experience. The cafe is overrated in general. We ordered the pop cherry tart, oatmeal cookie, a Irish chocolate (if I'm not mistaken), 3 different types of coffee. It came out rather disappointing and the smell and taste of the coffee were bland. The crews were quite rude, they messed up the coffees and we tried to clarify with them, they just said "you just have to figure it out yourself....!" It wasn't a busy evening, their attitude; to be honest, is really disappointing. The owner written a comment on my review and I also replied nicely and honestly to the situation happened on that evening. Somehow... the review is removed... A couple weeks ago I ordered a custom cake for my daughter's baptism. I found Oakleaf cakes on yelp and saw that they had good reviews and beautiful work, and though I was on a budget, I knew it was important to get a great cake since it will be the centerpiece of the reception. So I made sure to order early and to be very clear about what I wanted, which was a cake with sugar lace like the one on their website. I ordered about 2 or 3 weeks in advance and paid the deposit necessary. My husband picked up the cake and was given instructions not to refrigerate the cake, to simply keep it out at room temperature. The cake was beautiful, it was very well done appearance-wise. The taste, however, was not good. At all. The fondant was disgusting, the cake was DRY, and the filling was very very sparse. It was very embarrassing because no one at the reception liked the cake, not even the kids, which was surprising because it was a Nutella filling. I am extremely disappointed because I paid $280 for a cake that was only nice to look at. In the end, I paid a lot of money for this cake to just be left with more than 3/4 after the reception, and the rest was only nibbled on and tossed. Do not trust them with making a cake for a big event. A cake from BJ's is a million times better. Edit: It has now been six months since I posted my review and I was never contacted by the bakery to try to fix their mistake. Clearly they don't care about their clientele enough. read more

We recently ordered a birthday cake for our daughter's 20th birthday on New Year's Eve. I saw the reviews for Oakleaf, the awards, etc. and was very excited that they had a couple of cakes ready to go on short notice, so I ordered a chocolate cake with white buttercream for later that day. Although it was kind of pricy, around $36, I figured it was a special occasion and the place was supposed to be great, so I ordered the cake, and asked for an extra flower or two if they could do it, along with a simple Happy Birthday message. They had the cake ready as ordered and I opened it to make sure it was the right one, expecting to see some simple personalized decoration and some flowers but there was the same flower which it originally came with and nothing else. The H. B. Inscription wasn't piped onto the cake but printed onto a strip of fondant and placed in the middle. Ok, whatever, the cake is going to be awesome, right? So later that night we cut into what we expected was going to be the best cake ever and found the cake a little dry, and even worse, what they call buttercream tasted like minimally sweetened butter! We thought it was a bad batch or something because our cake tasted like buttered chocolate bread!! All of the calories but none of the sweet, rich goodness that we expected when we heard "special homemade buttercream!" So none of us finished our pieces but we saved the cake just in case we needed to give the bakery feedback, get a new one, refund (haha right) or something. I called on Jan 2nd (the next day they were open) and although the chef/owner wasn't around, the person who answered assured me they appreciated the feedback and took my number for the owner to call me back. Yeah right--never heard back. Real bummer, special occasion screwed up by a lousy bakery whose owner doesn't even care enough to return a call. I will never go back. read more

The first time I went to Oakleaf I was really happy with the cake flavor in my Birthday Yellow cake cupcake (I don't remember its official name honestly.) I am personally not a fan of italian buttercream - a fact re-enforced upon having it on the yellow birthday cake cupcake - but hey that's my personal preference. I also bought a red velvet cupcake with cream cheese frosting, which was pretty good - I love cream cheese frosting. But then I came back and all the cupcakes had italian buttercream. The only alternative to italian buttercream was a chocolate vegan cupcake with chocolate vegan frosting. My roommate got some other cupcake - perhaps raspberry and chocolate? I can't remember. What i do remember is that the cakes were dry and the frosting seemed to have absorbed coffee flavor from either the coffee being brewed or a mocha cupcake in the same display case. Everything was tinged with coffee flavor, which really displeased my coffee-hating roommate. As a coffee drinker myself, I wasn't put off by the taste, but its not something I paid for or expected and I could sympathize with my roommate's displeasure. My roommate, a fan of cheesecake, noticed every single cheesecake in the display case had cracked. We thought this was surprising for a professional bakery. I dunno Oakleaf. First off, it did not have cream cheese frosting, which is essential for red velvet cupcakes. Second, neither the icing nor the cake had any flavor. I LOVE this place and come here whenever possible for cakes, treats, and mostly the coffee! Generally staff is amazing, but there is one staff member I generally have problems with. I've been in food service for a long time, so I try to be forgiving but every time I walk in and it is him at the counter I get disappointed. This morning he ignored me for several minutes, he was working on another customer's order so I get it, but he didn't even acknowledge me when I walked in. I was short on time, and the next customer kept ordering more so I went to walk out so I could get to work. The worker tried to stop me, but I said "you didn't even acknowledge me, and I have to go." He started to argue with me before I walked out. I love this place, I really do, and I would give it five stars if I didn't have a poor experience with this barista every single time he was working. Walked in to grab a birthday cake, then had to get three cupcakes because they looked so good. 1) ginger cheesecake: no it's not weird, yes it's pretty damn good. Cheesecake is dense and flavorful yet light enough that it delivers the ginger. The birthday boy, who likes ginger and cheesecake, was thoroughly delighted. 2) chocolate cupcake: I believe the cream was Nutella. Pretty decent. 3) honey almond cupcake: oh my! When they say honey, honey it is. That icing on top is heavenly. It's soaked with honey, just about the right amount of sweetness, and I don't know what else they put in that icing but it just melts in your mouth. Never had a cupcake like this before. 4) tiramisu cupcake: the cupcake itself tastes like ladyfinger. I didn't even hear the full story until the cake was delivered, cut, and devoured...a friend was planning my party. I told her that I didn't care about anything except that I would be surrounded by my friends and that the cake was something that tasted amazing and would be remembered by EVERYONE. As a child, I always had huge original sculpted cakes and I wanted something that rivaled those cakes for my 40th birthday. She met with Oakleaf Cakes one week before my party to order and design my cake. I now know that bakery was in the middle of a move, changing their location and was not taking new orders. They really went above and beyond to take my order anyway and gave honest advice about their best flavors. My lemon cake had the most delicate raspberry buttercream filling that you can imagine! I was nervous about having fondant on my cake since I usually do not like it. But I was not disappointed by Oakleaf's own marshmallow fondant - beautiful AND delicious!! My cake was delivered perfectly on time (by Amanda herself, as I later found out!). When I saw it, I started tearing up and asked to hug the woman who delivered it. I had never seen a more beautiful birthday cake. AND it was all for me!!! Even the guests without a sweet tooth thought it was a delicious cake and ate every crumb.
