My husband and I had a fabulous lunch here today. It's a quirky place at a marina. A little hard to find but worth it! I had the cucumber salad (cucumbers, red onions, grape tomatoes and red and yellow peppers in a perfect vinaigrette). I also had the shrimp tacos topped with perfectly ripe mango cubes. Shrimp were perfectly cooked, as were those in my husband's shrimp basket. He had a side of onion rings (very good - I snitched one). We shared a piece of simple but creamy key lime pie. It's crust was neither too hard nor too crumbly. We may come back for the golf in the area, but we certainly will try to come to this restaurant again! read more

Food was good once you overlooked the portion size on shrimp and grits was way too small that my husband ordered. One cream scoop of grits and 6 small shrimp for $16.00 was overcharged, It was covered with a juice/ broth. More like soup. I had the Oar house Blackened Shrimp with 6 or 8 shrimp, again 1 scoop of smashed potatoes and greasy green beans. Too much butter and spices for the whole dinner at $18.00. Have tried this place twice, and I'm not a fan. Went today and asked about the "special," a French Dip with au jus. Asked if it came with a drink or some other perk since it's the "special." Nope....just choice of side. So I guess it's special because it's the most expensive sandwich....other than that, not a big deal. For the price, it wasn't worth it. You know, I would have had nicer things to say until I saw the big guy (manager?) behind the bar shucking two dozens raw oysters into ice trays less than an hour after he interrupted us while ordering them with the owner(?) to say they were totally out. Owner went on about the truck guy forgetting them and apologized (it would have been totally acceptable if they were just out...) but the way it seems is that no one wanted to shuck a dozen oysters at 630PM and then someone more important came in that couldn't be lied to and/or treated like a complete idiot. 5 stars for the oysters which were from Yankeetown Florida, served nicely chilled, medium sized and slightly briney. We paired with fried green tomatoes which were also very good. House rose wine worked a treat. Service was very slow, simply not enough staff for cooking and serving. We got in at 2.30 pm on a Saturday and the place was rammo with people waiting. I've eaten here before and enjoyed it. Great location, nice views from deck. The issue that I have is food quality and quantity. We ordered smoked tuna dip, 20 Buffalo wings, and a mahi sandwich. With prices being what they are today, I expect a reasonable size portion. Nothing massive, but certainly not dinky. I expect the food that is served to be fresh, not old or stale. Seems reasonable, right? First the good: - Great tasting smoked tuna (just the tuna not the chips) - Good Buffalo wings, although expensive for $20 wings I got a fair amount. - Ultimately a nice waitress was able to help us with our bill. The Bad: - For the $28 spent on wings, I had to buy a side of fries separate. Ridiculous. - The fries were limp, not at all fries, more like steamed - The tuna dip came out with soft chips that you could bend and not break. This left them tasting stale because you couldn't bite through them either. Asked for more chips as a fix, got a small cup of 5 chips? Tastes like they reheat their chips. - The mahi sandwich for $19 had a super small piece of mahi. The bun in this pic isn't gigantic, it is just a really small piece of fish. About 1/4" thick or even thinner, doesn't even fill the bun. The waiter reacted the same as we did when we showed him. He was like "wow that is small"! Then after speaking to chef, returned to say it is pretty weighed 4 oz piece. That's fine, but the piece we had wasn't 4 oz. It was smaller than a deck of cards and far thinner too. It was completely ridiculous. So we didn't eat it because there was more bun than meat!! - Manager only took half of the price off at first. Why take half price off when we didn't even eat it? Not even a bite? Your money is valuable, don't waste it at places who are reducing portions and charging through the roof. read more

Great little hidden spot. We drove over in our boat from Niceville. Plenty of open slips to park your boat. I had the blackened fish sandwich and it was great! Big piece of Mahi and the price was right too. My wife had the Philly and said it was very good as well. Gumbo was so so but definitely didn't ruin our meal. We'll be back! read more

I'm so glad we found this place. It's small ! The service was great ! We came with friends so we were able to try a good variety . I had the oar plate . Blackened shrimp with mashed potatoes and green beans. My only complaint is the potatoes were dry. I wasn't a huge fan of the tuna dip. It was a bit dry as well. But everything else was great. No fried foods here ! Well except French fries and onion rings. The red velvet cheese cake was delicious !! We will be back! read more

It's a little, hidden, out of the way place, but worth the journey. It's definitely one of those local places that you hope people from outside the area never discover. But eventually you know they will. A Relaxing place to grab food and beer at the Freeport Marina. The menu has a balanced selection of seafood, sandwiches and burgers - and the local beer on tap is pretty good. You can either drive there or dock your boat. Either will work. I always try the fish tacos wherever I go, and those here did not disappoint. Some of the best I've had. Nicely grilled and spiced with just the right amount of fresh mango. Perfect with the local Freeport "Odd Pelican" Beer. We'll definitely be going back. read more

We visited this Marina side restaurant with friends and family. A rendezvous from surrounding towns for lunch. Open hours are limited. A very simple place. There was one fellow tending bar, serving, etc. Food was tasty and adequate portions. A bit pricey, but what ain't these days? A unique, quaint little place. Small inside seating area and tall metal stools outside at the railing doubling as a bar from which the view is very pleasant. There's an adjacent marina which sports a " floating art museum". Which we sadly, we did not visit. There's a boat ramp for launch, if you back your trailer 75yards to reach it. Hmmm... Anyway, all agreed the food was very good. We'll likely return. It's just a good bit out-of-the-way for us from PC and Milton. If you're in the neighborhood of Freeport, FLA then stop in for a taste of North Florida. read more

Two stars is a gift based on the meal I just ate. The only reason why isn't not a one star rating is because of the previous couple of times I've been here (I'm hoping this was a one off). I ordered the 'Oar' which is blackened shrimp, green beans and mashed potatoes. The mashed potatoes were good. The green beans didn't taste or look all that fresh. The shrimp was terrible. I've spent the last two decades in the military, and I've had better shrimp at the chow hall. It had that nasty 'been frozen too long' look, texture, and taste. I've eaten here two other times in the last few months, and I've had the Oar both times. I was looking forward to this meal all week, it was that good the first two times. My first two meals were easily five stars. I don't know if they've changed their distributor, hired a new cook, or what, but I really hope that this was an exception and not the new rule. As a side note, the dude behind the bar was very friendly and provided excellent service, but that can't even come close to making up for the nasty shrimp. read more

We a group of Veterans stopped here for a late lunch yesterday. We came from laying wreaths at the National Cemetery at the NAS. The 7 of us included 2 disabled vets, 1 purple heart w/spouses and a veterans widow. All of us in our 70's and 80's. We all were still emotional about laying wreaths on friends as well of members of Navarre United Methodist Church graves. We had a great lunch served by a wonderful waitress. When we were leaving the waitress said our meal was paid for "Mrs. Claus". Thank you to the managenent, owner and staff of The Oar House they are great patriots to our dear America. My family stopped by here while we were on vacation in the area. It's was a cool place from the start as live music was playing on the patio and it is nice and comfortable on the inside. Our waitress greeted up promptly and kept a good eye on our table the whole time we were there. Everyone had the grilled shrimp and fries and we all left full and happy. I've given this place a couple of different chances to get it right. Bad oysters and Overpriced everything. Food is just mediocre. You would think that mgmt wild make sure that they have at least the top 5 domestic beers available. They are dead set on anheuser Busch products. Good mgmt makes sure their customers can get what they want that is, if they want them to come back. $5 for a domestic beer. Why? Don't let the laid back, marina vibe fool you. The food here is not your usual bar fare. These people love good food and the proof is in the details. Although partial to the wings (I recommend the house sauce), I have had a wide variety of items. They make all their own sauces and the seasonings have been perfect. I've been in the F&B industry most of my adult life, so I understand the nature of the business. I also understand most restaurants are short staffed, inventory issues, etc. This post is to shed light on serving 101 for a fast-growing restaurant in a small town. If you are in the position of being short staffed on a busy Sunday afternoon (with live music), a friendly hello, menu, and a water in front of the guest goes a long way. I even don't mind the explanation that you're short staffed and will be back to take the order as quickly as possible. Completely ignoring, especially guests at your bar of only 4 seats, is not the answer. Also, if you are short staffed and your server as to shuck the oysters for the house- 86 the oysters if your response to the customer is going to be- "oh that's great, fucking beautiful, let's do it." Once we got our drinks and placed our order things went smoothly. The food is always good, and we look forward to visiting on average once a week. I hope this message is seen my ownership and management to be better prepared and staffed- it was a beautiful Sunday afternoon, with live music, at a marina- 2 servers?? Still giving 4 stars as the service is normally decent/good, food is great, and we are happy to have this restaurant around the corner. read more

So glad we found this small off the beaten path restaurant. Service was great. They have an assortment of localish beers ( Oyster Brewing Company) along with old standbys. I had the shrimp tacos which were some of the best I've ever had. Ordered grits as my side. They were cooked dry and I needed to ask for some butter, but tasted great and had good consistency after that. Had the fried green tomatoes appetizer...seasoned well and a good sauce but they need another couple of minutes to cook the batter through. My husband had the all you can eat bboiled shrimp which were seasoned just right and one platter was "all he could eat". They serve oysters on half shell and have been getting them from Louisiana this time of year. We will wait until the winter months to try those. read more
