Had my brake pads and calipers replaced at Nick's on my Kia Forte last week. The only mechanics I have used in the past have been through the car dealers. I was a bit skeptical choosing a mechanic from Yelp but, I didn't really have a choice since my brakes were grinding and I needed them fixed yesterday. I called several other mechanics in the general area and either they didn't work on my type of car or were unable work me in. Nick answered the phone and without hesitating said he could take a look at my car that day. I had the tow truck take my car to Nick's and it was smooth sailing from there. Not only did Nick have an estimate earlier than originally promised but, the final cost was hundreds less than what I had expected. His daughter assisted me when I picked up my car and, she was friendly and kind. When she was unsure of what the final cost would be, she apologized and asked her father. The best part is that my car's brakes are now fixed and I am happy. I would not hesitate in taking my car back to Nick's and I would recommend him to anyone. In summary: Great repair, knowledgable mechanic, reasonable prices, fantastic customer service, and AAA approved (with a discount, too). I've come here several times for my car check engine light on and they always have good customer service. I usually can call the day before to book an appointment with them for the following day. My clutch was loose and I couldn't shift into gears for my miata. I took it to Nicks out of convenience. Although i did not end up having my car serviced there, the workers were pleasant and the evaluation that was suppose to be around 80$, ended up being free. Nick went out of his way to troubleshoot a weird check engine light that kept coming on (knock sensor). He finally found a Hyundai service notice that said the computer software needed to be updated bc the parameters for that sensor were set too low! Who would've thought? Looked at my car and evaluated that it needed less parts than two other service shops quoted. Than quoted an overpriced amount for the work it did need. Since I needed the service I told him to proceed. Even though he provided me with a quote for the work - he called me 2/3's way into the repairs and told me that his staff ran into complications with removing a bolt and that wanted more money to complete the work. Why bother to quote a price if the quote is not honored. Nick told me that he was going to complete the work at his shop however my springs were taken to another shop to be repaired. This shop was one that I was planning to take it to before Nick told me that he could complete the work himself. read more

My 2001 Dodge van 1500 has been kept alive at Nicks. There were some communication problems when the ownership changed. The previous owner told me to return the vehicle when my next smog inspection was due. I already paid for the repairs. The new management initially didn't believe that I had paid for the repairs. I was charged over $800.00 to fix the vehicle (same problem) again. I paid. I drove the vehicle about one mile. Problem still not fixed. I've now paid upwards of $1,200.00. Finally, they agreed that the vehicle was not fixed. Fast forward about 3 weeks (yes, it took that long...but I have another vehicle). The part that was broken isn't available anymore BUT they fixed the old part. I've paid about $3,000.00 to get the van road safe. I think the EXPERTISE at Nick's warrants giving them 5 stars along with their honesty and willingness to find and fix the problem. They finally agreed that they initially did not repair the van and fixed it. There were no more charges. The shop will send you home in an Uber and again to pick you up when your car is ready. Road trip on the calendar. We'll see if I make it accross country...and back! read more

Not all mechanics are bad. Although I didn't technically get service from them, these guys were honest when they tested my battery. I took in my prius because it had been having many bad starts, and today, it didn't start up at all until I took out my battery and plugged it back in. I was pretty sure it was getting low so I took it to Nick's. These guys could have easily said it was "low" and taken my money (a prius battery is pretty expensive) but they told me it was low but normal for a prius since it was hybrid. Thanks. Nick is honest and just a really great guy. Our car broke down on our way to our vacation. We had it towed to his shop. he said the engines gone- and not only did he not charge us a fee for the inspection, but he also said we could leave the car there in the lot w/o fees until we got back from our vacation. My wife was in an accident in Irvine, and we live about 33 miles out. So AAA towed the car here as they are a "AAA certified mechanic" She requested that it just be repaired enough to be driven, as I do my own work on our cars. First, they told her that they would not be able to look at her car until after the weekend (this was thursday) eh, okay... sure.... Friday morning they called her and told her that her tie rod end was broken (this I knew) but that her entire steering rack needed to be replaced because it was leaking, and repairs were going to be $1,900. Now, this is a 2006 camry, car probably isnt worth 1,900 but I digress. I called a mechanic in my area, asked him how much do replace our steering rack... He said $400 out the door. So here comes the fun, the wife called and let them know that we were going to come pick up the car... They started to get weird. Wanted to know why, so she told them we got a better quote. They wanted to know how much, so when she said "400" they thought she meant 400 less than their quote... So now, oh guess what.. "well, we could probably go with cheaper parts... and get it down 300-350 less, but just so you know if you take it somewhere else they are probably going to blah blah" Trying everything they could to get her to keep it with them. First of all, if you could have done it for cheaper, that should have been stated RIGHT AWAY. Not when we decide to take the car somewhere else. So I get there to pick the car up, and there is no sign of leaking fluid ANYWHERE. Okay, maybe they just put it here? Started the car, still no leaks. Got the car home, lifted it, and found that it had a broken tie rod as they stated... but absolutely NOTHING wrong with the steering rack. No leaks, no noise... What was broken, though, was a lower control arm... which they did not mention. I mean, it was clear as day when I got under the car. So I have a feeling they did not even lift the car to actually inspect it. Or, if they did... they missed a major issue which is equally as bad. So now, they quoted me 1900 to do the steering rack/alignment/tie rod ends. What the car actually needed: inner tie rod, lower control arm, ball joint. What I actually paid an honest mechanic: 150 in parts, 150 in labor. The car is running just as it was before the accident. No issues with the steering rack, no leaking power steering fluid. And the other mechanic actually pulled the dents out on his own, free of charge. Please, be careful of predatory mechanics... These guys saw a woman who was desperate to get her car fixed, and jumped on the opportunity to make a quick buck for very little work. Now, a week later the car is still fine, no leaking power steering fluid, no problems at all with the steering rack. I paid 100 dollars for a diagnosis, and got a half-assed, incorrect assessment of what was wrong. And had I not intervened, my wife would have paid the 1900 for 300$ worth of work. read more

Took my 1996 RAV4 Toyota in for an emergency fix when one of the rubber exhaust clamps gave way, leading to the car's entire exhaust system dangling from just one clamp (scary!). I asked for a repair quote, anticipating a bill for hundreds of dollars. Imagine my surprise and delight when Nick told me that the part in question would cost me $5 ($5!!) and the repair could be done over the space of my lunch break! What about the labor charge, I asked. Nick told me that it wouldn't take long at all to fit the part and it wasn't a difficult fix, so no charge for the labor. My truck broke down on the way to school in San Diego and I got towed to Nick's Auto Service. I did some serious damage to my truck but the service I received was the best in my entire life. They were not only extremely knowledgable and honest about what was wrong with my truck, they were friendly and attentive and the price was more than fair. I was a long-standing customer of Nick's and now there is a new owner. I cannot comment regarding the owner as I was unable to speak with him and do not believe he is even aware of the situation. I think his mechanic withholds information from him. My son's vehicle needed a new radiator and some hoses. We received an estimate of over $950. My son thought this was high so he started investigating and calling around to price the parts. He got three other estimates that were all at a minimum $300-350 less than what Chavez the mechanic quoted him. When he called to see if there could be a price match, he was told "I need to make money on the parts". For example a hose that three other mechanics quoted as being $20 (the lower hose to the radiator) was being quoted $71 by Chavez the mechanic and NO that did not include the labor of installing the hose. I am for free enterprise and of course for businesses to make a living and a profit, and I absolutely support the small business ownrs in the community but when you are a neighborhood auto shop and other neighborhood auto shops (not a big box store) are all coming in between 300-350 less, that is significant. There was no discussion of a compromise or Chavez getting the owner involved. When my son asked for the owner he was told he wasn't in. Tha'ts too bad since I have been a long time customer of Nick's and felt Nick was reasonable and did a great job and was truly the neighborhood mechanic we all went to for an honest and reliable opinion and a job well done. read more

I have been reading the reviews for Nick's because I assumed they would all be positive but some people still find ways to complain. Every time I, or my family, have taken our cars into Nick's we get nothing but the best service. The mechanics at Nick's Auto Service are so helpful. I almost always have a mechanic come and personally talk to me about my car every time I bring it in. It is very reassuring to talk to the person working on your car and you don't get that at other shops. It is a family run establishment that has been in business for decades in Irvine. That is the kind of business you know you can trust because it has already been vetted by the community at large. Anyway, I am surprised people have any complaints. Auto shops are a tough business. Everyone wants their car back as soon as possible and no one wants to spend money on fixing a car. Nicks gives you a great price for the expertise they have to offer and I know they always get my car back to me as soon as they can. What else is there to say? I highly recommend this place. Wow I have nothing bad to say about this place! My car had stopped on me and I had it towed to nicks auto that afternoon. After a couple of hours I received a call that my fuel pump was no good, they told me exactly what it would cost, which by the way was beyond fair and my car was ready for pickup early the next morning. I would strongly recommend this place especially if you are not really mechanically inclined and don't know much about costs on services, they are very honest and get the job done unbelievably quickly. read more

When I first dropped off a beat up 2001 Volvo station wagon I wasn't impressed by the customer service, actually sounded over the phone like I had insulted him by bringing him a car that had "leaked on my floor..." which is what vehicles with an oil (and antifreeze) leak sorta do. It also took 3 days to get the leak diagnosed, so I dreaded it wasn't being dealt with properly. Mind you, it had a nasty oil leak that had been ignored for months through repeated exhaustion of oil quarts, so... with the antifreeze leaks... there was a lot to clean off. The bill was $175 for the cleaning, the fixing of the two antifreeze leaks (needed in order to isolate the oil leak), and the oil leak diagnosis. But when I got to speak with Nick about the work he'd done, he was very generous, conscientious, and helpful. He said the Volvo had a head gasket issue that would cost $3K and a brake light socket replacement that would also be expensive, and I knew there would have been more to deal with. He expressly assumed I wouldn't bother fixing it because those repairs were more expensive than the car itself, certainly wasn't presuming I'd pay. Which meant he lost business by telling me the truth and encouraging me to NOT get it fixed. And I did unload the Volvo. He spoke at length with me to advise me about how to shop for a new used car and offered me a 1/2-price discount on any Buyer's Inspection (usually $100) I were to bring to him- free if it turned out to be a lemon. I ended up not taking him up on the Buyer's Inspection offer for the 2007 Honda Civic I bought a week later since I ended up buying it from an individual without getting it inspected first (long story), but when I brought it to him to inspect he still applied the discount. The Civic had 185K miles on it, so he could've given me a story about a lot of costly BS problems knowing I'd already bought it and was trapped, but he mentioned very believable, verifiable issues- drive belt, worn front tires (that I'd seen), radiator damage from an accident years prior, leaking steering hoses. Otherwise it "runs great," he said- which it does. He'd also recommended NOT fixing the A/C given that it was likely going to be a costly repair (more lost business), but I had him inspect it anyway and he found it was a reasonable repair after all. He also assumed I wouldn't do any of the repairs, and when I insisted I wanted them he waived the inspection fee entirely. Whole process was $1700 and about 1.5 days. Then my sister's work car- a Honda CRV- started making its brake problem known- scraping heavily and loudly. She'd waited much too long to address them. We brought it in and Nick said all the rotors and pads were shot, plus the tires were dangerously bad. It was $1300 total, done in one day. My sister was skeptical for unrelated reasons and insisted that when I pick up the car I should request the brake pads and rotors so she could look at them herself. Nick got them for me without hesitation- nothing to hide- showed me what the damage was and why he'd recommended replacing them, and got a box to put them in. Two were worn all the way down, two were worn unevenly and caked in soot, and the rotors showed several burn marks that prevented a proper resurfacing. I also looked at the tires that had supposedly been on my sister's car, and two were absurdly bald while the other two were just unevenly worn. The mechanic showing me could easily have just pointed to the worst tires in the pile and said that was it, but the back tires he showed me weren't as bad, just bad enough. I have no proof that Nick's is honest, that I paid the fairest possible amount for the repairs, but I've never found a mechanic or shop in my entire life (47 yrs old) through many cars and cities that came across as straight-forward and professional regarding the work done and treatment of my concerns. So I do trust him. As owner of a smaller repair shop he does appear to maintain an active oversight over everything that goes on in the garage- which you can hear from the waiting room. If I weren't going back to NJ (just in Irvine to visit my sister for a couple months), I'd continue bringing my own car to Nick's indefinitely. Finally met a mechanic/ shop I do trust. read more

Just to be clear, my five-star rating is based on work Nicks didn't do. I got new tires at Costco recently and was told I needed a front-end alignment. My mechanic referred me to Nicks. I left the car with Brandon, who called me about 15-20 minutes later and said they had put the car up and everything checked out OK - I didn't need an alignment and there wouldn't be any charge. Another shop might have pretended to do an alignment that wasn't needed and charge me for it. My hat's off to them for being honest. (Not sure why the Costco guy told me I needed an alignment - maybe to avoid replacing tires that were still under warranty?) read more

Can't really rate the work they do, as they didn't actually DO any work to mine. Last Friday on my way home my car starting smoking from the exhaust - yikes! I barely made it home, and decided to deal with it Saturday morning. Woke up and called AAA at 8am to tow it. I had called Nicks' first and let them know I wanted to tow it down, asked if they could look at it, and explained the problem - the guy said "sure, bring it down!" So I had AAA tow it there - got there way before 9am. So at about noon, I hadn't heard anything from Nicks and called - a different guy answered, and said "oh yeah, we haven't even looked at it yet. Can't get to it til Monday." I explained that the whole reason I towed it there was because I was told it could be looked at it that same day - very important, as I know shops are closed Sundays and I am DEAD without a car during the week for work! His attitude was so nonchalant - "look, sorry, I don't know what you want me to say. We can go around and around and it won't change it. It's not going to get looked at." UMMMM...okay buddy. So I told him I'd send AAA over there by their closing time of 2pm (using ANOTHER of my three AAA tows), and he said, "no, we close by 12:30 today." Um, your website says 2pm on Saturdays? "Uh, yeah, not today though." So I wasted an entire day, a AAA tow, and my sanity. Thanks buddy. Went and picked it up and took it to Auto House around the corner - super nice and professional guys. "if it seems to good to be true, it probably is..." I needed a special type of Interstate battery for my car and looked up the appropriate model number online. As the batteries cannot be ordered online, Interstate allows you to identify the appropriate model number and then provides a list of locations nearby that may have or can order it. As the battery I needed has about a $40 spread between low/high retail prices, I called a handful of businesses in the area to find the best price. I called during the 2nd week of January 2016 and spoke with a female who happened to be a co-owner according to Nick. I think her name was Stacy? but at this point, cannot recall for sure. After having looked up the battery's model number on the Interstate website, I provided the female (co-owner) with this information and she confirmed it against her information and said that "I have it in stock and it is $173.95." As this was a very good price for the battery, I again confirmed the battery model number and price with her and then asked her to hold one for me. She said that "it is a common battery and that we always have 2-3 in stock." She then said to just check back prior to coming to get it to ensure that it is in stock and the call was ended. I did a few more price checks and then called the female co-owner to re-confirm the battery's price as the other places I called were all substantially higher. She again confirmed the battery's model number, price and application and then I thanked her for her help and said I would come get it when I am back in town. Upon returning to OC on 1/18/2016, I called Nick's to try and stop by to pick up the battery. The gentleman I spoke with confirmed that the battery was in stock at a price of $199.95. I told him what the female co-owner had said to me to which he replied "she's not here today and neither is the owner." He told me to call back the next day. I called back the following day and spoke with Nick, the owner and he said that what the female co-owner had said was incorrect and I asked him if he would honor her price to which he replied "no." He offered to do it for $191.95. As this was still the best price, I drove over to pick up the battery but upon arriving there, he did NOT have the battery I wanted in stock. I expressed my frustration to with him about how I had called MULTIPLE times to confirm the battery model number and price and the only thing he said was "well, I have this other one that's very similar and will work but if you want that one we're gonna have to order it. That lady you spoke with is the co-owner and I can't assume responsibility for what she discussed with you as she is not here to defend herself. Maybe she made a simple mistake with the model number...I don't know." I re-informed him that I reconfirmed the model number and price multiple times with her and folks I spoke with the prior day. My overall impression is that neither Nick, the female co-owner or the staff that answered my call the prior day know their products and based on some of the other reviews I've seen on Yelp, they don't seem to pay particular attention to detail. It seems as though if you entrust your car to them for service that they may just slap whatever parts they have lying around their shop into your vehicle "as long as it works" and then tell you that they put in the actual, recommended part. The difference between the battery I wanted and the one they had was a single digit in the model number to which I placed emphasis on this when speaking with Nick and his staff. As far as my battery goes, it turns out that that battery is very uncommon (contrary to what the female co-owner told me) and was on back order for at least 2 weeks. I was lucky to find one at a dealership the same day and they sold it to me for a reasonable price. I have tried to be kind to small businesses in that past (to give them a chance) but this is now the second time I have tried to deal with a non-dealer small business with my import brand and they were unable to handle a job despite me providing explicit details on what it is I wanted. Unfortunately, it may still be best to stay with the big boys (dealers). read more

SHADY!!!! I took my car here because they had a 10% off coupon. I brought it in because it was slow to start...I had replaced the battery less than 2 years ago. But my car is 11 years old with over 130,000 miles I figured it would be a good idea to have it checked out. First of all, $85 for a diagnostic is a bit steep but we're in Irvine so I sucked it up. They called me the next morning and told me an extensive list of what was wrong. Transmission work $225 (my car does not pull, lag, or do anything suggesting an issue with the transmission), Oil leak (they wanted to charge $215 just to CLEAN to find out where the leak was coming from), a brake inspection $42.50-$250 (my brakes have not squeaked or hesitated once), a new air filter and wipers (this is one I kinda already knew), and a new battery ($200). I called my dad who has worked on cars for 40 years and he told me all of that was pretty much ridiculous. I called them back and told them not to move forward with any of the work and that I would be getting a second opinion. They said "OK" with a rude tone and that was the end of the conversation. 10 minutes later they call me back and say "well, we had your battery on a charger but now YOUR CAR WON'T START and you need a new starter" ($400) How is it that I was able to start and drive my car to the shop, they put the battery on a charger, and now only after I say I'm taking it somewhere else all of a sudden my car won't start?! I asked him how this could happen and he actually said "I DON'T KNOW, it just won't start" If I would have let them put a new $200 battery in my car like they suggested, would this have happened? Why would they jump to the conclusion that it's the starter...alternator maybe? This place is shady, rude, and complete rip-off. Now I can't even get my car to start to take it to another shop. read more

Nick told me a bunch of stuff was wrong with my car, but then when I took my car to the actual dealership they told me everything that nick told me was wrong. Nick tried to get me to buy new shocks for my car along with other things, which he told me was imperative. The dealership told me my shocks and everything else were totally good. So moral of the story, nicks auto clearly values money over honesty. read more

Fixing our brakes costed $1,296 on a 1994 Toyota 4Runner. Right then there was a red flag, however my boyfriend was willing to pay that amount. We needed our car fixed before our big move from California to Washington. When we got it back, everything seemed fine so we packed our car with our stuff and cleaned out our apartment etc etc. We were on the move not even 10 minutes out of Irvine and our brakes were giving out on the freeway! Literally an accident waiting to happen. People were yelling at us because our back tires were smoking and smelled like burnt rubber, so we slowly pulled to the side and didn't really know what to do since we had put the last of our money into the move and into fixing our car with a ridiculous estimate. We called the shop and they told us sometimes these things happen, (are you freaking kidding me?!) and that we should go to the nearest auto shop and that they will refund us what we pay at that shop. So we went peddled our car across the street into what looked like a shady auto shop that actually fixed our car for $75!!!! Mind you, this was 3 months ago and the car works great. Because of this second auto shop. So yeah I'm pretty pissed we had to pay almost $1,300 to have our brakes go out on the freeway in the middle of our move and not even get a sorry or a partial refund to the outrageous price. read more

I don't know. I guess I didn't exactly have the same experience as everyone else. I brought my car in with a transmission problem and radiator fluid leaking, and ended up paying almost $200 for him just to tell me that I had a transmission problem and a radiator fluid leak. The transmission problem ended up being too expensive to fix, so I might as well not have fixed the radiator cap, but he did it anyway (that was $20 of the $200). And even though I mentioned I had AAA, I didn't get any of the perks or discounts anyone else did. Since I ended up having to buy a new car and get a rental in the mean time, I kind of wish I hadn't even bothered with Nick's, since I did a pretty good job diagnosing it myself and would have preferred not to pay anyone else $200 to do it. read more

I was charged extra for a screw in type filter and $8 for topping off my fluids! You kidding me! They also wanted to charge me 100 bucks to read the trouble code. Honest and affordable, what more could you want from a mechanic? I knew it from the moment I called Nick's to inquire about a fuel injection cleaning service the dealer informed me was "recommended service" on my BMW. I know better than to trust the dealership so I called Nick's to price out how much the service would cost. The lady that answered the phone asked me how old my car was, how many miles and said it wasn't something that was even needed until I had 200K miles on it! The dealership was trying to rip me off for $200, and another BMW mechanic in mission viejo quoted me $125 but didn't mention that my car wouldn't even need it for another 120K miles or so! I was pleasantly surprised that they have me an honest answer that the service wasn't necessary instead of quoting me a price and doing a work that was unnecessary. I immediately saved their number and when I needed a new battery, I took it to Nick's. Gave me a price that was 50% lower than the dealership, and did quickly it while I was on my lunch! *****DO NOT BRING YOUR VEHICLE HERE NO MATTER WHAT**** Not only was this the worst automotive experience I've ever had, but it was the worst service experience I've ever had in my life period! It went like this. I googled the closest mechanic to my house in Irvine. I was experiencing a total loss of power and because I had to have my car towed, I didn't want to pay a ton. I used google and found Nick's Auto Service. It was less than one mile away. My lucky day, right? Wrong it was the worst thing that could have possibly happened to me. I had my vehicle towed to his shop and one of the most beautiful young ladies I've ever seen in my life processed my car and explained that Nick had already left for the day. I'm still unclear why but she said I had to go back there in the morning between 8 & 9am to explain the issue I was experiencing to Nick. I had no clue why I couldn't go through it over the phone or why they couldn't jot down what I was experiencing and just take it from there. Whatever, I said to myself. I'll do it. At least it will give me an opportunity to hang out with this super hot chick again. The next day I went round Nick's shop and he was so rude. Before we even went through the car he told me in a stern tone 'I'm still deciding if I even want to take the project.' I wish now that he hadn't. It took about two weeks but he managed to figure the electrical issue. I call every third day to check on the progress because I was receiving zero communication from them. Each and every time I called Nick was extremely put out by me checking the status and he told me that I needed to be patient. 'I need to be patient. You've had my car for two weeks already,' I thought. Little did I know this was just the beginning. Several thousand dollars and three weeks later I picked up my car. It seemed to be running great at first and so I was very pleased and easily got over all the drama. Them 5 miles down the road my car started overheating. An issue that was not occurring before I brought it to Nick's. He said to bring the car back and I did. To make a long story short he had the car for another month and he proceeded to just throw parts at the problem. He replaced every component of the cooling system including the water pump and radiator at a massive cost to me and it was still overheating. At one point he literally said and I quote 'I really don't know what else it could be.' Exactly what you want to hear from your mechanic. I continued to check the status every third day and he continued to tell me I need to be patient. In the end he had the car almost two months. He charged me thousands of dollars and he never fixed the problem. I finally got fed up and brought the car down the street to Fox Auto Service who was able to repair the car in two days.
