Their espresso is nuanced, delicious, and not harsh or overly acidic. Their drip coffee is not over-roasted, and often has tannic fruity notes and all the things that help you know you are drinking freshly roasted coffee brewed at the right temperature. The Pão de queijo (aka Brazilian Cheese Puffs) are a moment of beauty and joy, especially with fresh butter. (Also GLUTEN FREE!) Submarino. Get it if you love thick, dark chocolate. It was perfect for a cold day in NYC. You should get a stirrer to continuously stir it though, otherwise it'll settle and thicken quickly. Pao de queijo. Get it if you want a fluffy pastry with cheese in it. It was perfect with my submarino. So light and fresh. Yes. The reviews are right. There is a distinct, not-so-charming smell of cheese that hits your nostrils upon entering. A plain croissant and latte cost me $8. More expensive than most cafes. The croissant is fried with an oil different from most bakeries; it's strong and overpowering. A croissant should taste of dough and butter, not weird grease. I won't get it again. Very good chai latte, spicy and not too sweet, just the way I like it. The latte was a bit warmer then lukewarm, so no burnt tongues if you drink too fast! There's plenty of power sockets along the walls for people who want to work on their laptops, or someone who desperately needs to charge their phone. I generally fall into the latter category. A shop that understands 3rd wave coffee in one of the cultural capitals of the world shouldn't be so hard to find, but when you're surrounded by Starbucks I guess people don't know or care what they're missing. Cute little spot. There are a variety of items for breakfast and for lunch. I enjoyed my ricotta toast and almond milk match latte. This place was pretty full all morning which is always a good sign. They had Stevie wonder playing in the background. The pastries are fresh and most of the food is made to order. I love the vibe of this place. The only downside is people are a little too hasty to grab your seat and are willing to throw out your stuff to get on heir laptop. My only major regret is that is it not 100 yards from my front door. If it was I'd be here every day. Fine roasted coffe served and prepared in various forms (cone drip, french press, etc) without being gimmicking (i.e. Blue Bottle). It very much feel like something out of Berkley or like its been here churning out the same amazing coffee and outstanding wholesome bake goods since the 70's. They also have a few really great looking sandwiches such as a kale sandwich with tapanade that i wanted to devour upon sight but had to get my coffee on the run. Alright, I was dubious about the sandwiches because they aren't made to order, but rather sitting in the pastry case. But dang, the simple sandwich (cucumber, cheddar and butter on multigrain) was sooo good and tasted fresh. They also had a cashew milk horchata latte that was super creative and equally delicious. Very tasty food, and off-duty employees gossip about customers in front of customers On April 9, I was starving and needed a snack. I purchased the organic figs with cashew butter, and grabbed a table to eat them. The Turkish figs were amazing: great flavor, fresh and paired perfectly with the cashew butter. I never imagined putting these two items together, but I loved it! While eating this tasty treat, I was startled by a loud laugh. I looked around to see where it came from, and made eye contact with an off-duty employee who came in to visit his coworkers. He was tall, blonde, and wearing glasses. He loudly announced that everyone needs to keep it down, because someone just gave him the eye and looked directly at me. Yes, I did look at him. To see the source of laughter, without the judgment his insecure comment imposed on me. After leaving the restaurant, I called the restaurant and spoke with the manager on duty. After describing this person and the incident, it turns out I'm not the first person to call and/or complain about this employee and his comments. Based on the menu, I'll definitely stop by again to check out the food if I'm in the neighborhood. To the tragic hipster employee misinterpreting customers reactions: please be less insecure and enjoy the gorgeous weather outside when you have a day off. read more

This place could be so much better. I would just start by serving truly oustanding food and offering friendlier service. The coffee was average. The Pão de mel was dry and unflavorful. Not a single "welcome" or "hello" or "thank you for coming" from people there. The ecologically responsible practices, fair trade, sustainable agriculture, recycling and composting are all laudable but I would just love to get a smile, a decent drink and some hospitality from these guys. There were probably 4-5 workers sitting around (one was talking on their phone while helping a customer) and trying to look busy on a recent weekend visit but not a single person seemed attentive enough to lift a finger to help even get a lit for someone's coffee or offer an explanation which coffee was which in their order. Brazilian food and coffee in Greenwich Village is a good idea. I would suggest hiring warmer, service oriented people to keep people coming back. It was also clear to me that Fernando was absent on this recent visit. It might also be nice to explain or provide more introduction to the food and drinks either on the walls or on the displays. So far it is pretty generic-- just "Pão de mel" for example, with no explanation even what it is, what the ingredients are, and why you might want to spend $4 for a tiny 1 1/2" chocolate covered cake. Gray Dog still remains the role model for a neighborhood gathering place-- just two blocks away. The formula is pretty simple-- great food, fair prices, friendly, warm, and generous staff.
