This place could be so much better. I would just start by serving truly oustanding food and offering friendlier service. The coffee was average. The Pão de mel was dry and unflavorful. Not a single "welcome" or "hello" or "thank you for coming" from people there. The ecologically responsible practices, fair trade, sustainable agriculture, recycling and composting are all laudable but I would just love to get a smile, a decent drink and some hospitality from these guys. There were probably 4-5 workers sitting around (one was talking on their phone while helping a customer) and trying to look busy on a recent weekend visit but not a single person seemed attentive enough to lift a finger to help even get a lit for someone's coffee or offer an explanation which coffee was which in their order. Brazilian food and coffee in Greenwich Village is a good idea. I would suggest hiring warmer, service oriented people to keep people coming back. It was also clear to me that Fernando was absent on this recent visit. It might also be nice to explain or provide more introduction to the food and drinks either on the walls or on the displays. So far it is pretty generic-- just "Pão de mel" for example, with no explanation even what it is, what the ingredients are, and why you might want to spend $4 for a tiny 1 1/2" chocolate covered cake. Gray Dog still remains the role model for a neighborhood gathering place-- just two blocks away. The formula is pretty simple-- great food, fair prices, friendly, warm, and generous staff. There is a lot of competition in the neighborhood. The original Joe Junior set a high standard for this location. read more

This place is such a cool spot. Baristas are total masters. Even if there is a long line, they turn out those oat milk lattes with style and grace. The almond croissants are lit, and they have some great vegan bakes goods as well. AVOID. There was so much potential here, specially being part of the CUPS app plan, but they blew it. My coffee was good. I asked for a cold brew with no ice and the barista refused to fill it to the top. He was also too busy playing on his phone. My friend's cortado was bitter, but they did not seem to care. The snacks are good but very overpriced. They will ignore you if you order them in Portuguese apparently, so don't waste your money here. The baked goods are good but not worth what they are charging you. THEY ARE NOT WORTH THE SIDE OF ATTITUDE THAT YOU GET WHEN ORDERING THEM EITHER. The pāo de queijo is very small but I liked them. The brigadeiros were good also but not worth wasting your money on. This cafe would be absolutely perfect for my cafe-going purposes if it werent for the spotty wifi situation. Read: if you *don't* need wifi, this place is wonderful. It's a nice medium-small sized cafe. The service is exceedingly friendly. The cold brew coffee I had was delicious. The music was generic indie with a little lite hip hop thrown in--definitely a pleasant, cozy environment where there was room to sit and work for a while. Also, I'd say the baked goods selection beats that of most cafes in terms of how unique its offerings are, which is a major plus. But the major downside, if you need office space like I did today, is that the wifi connection is spotty and I got the impression that the management is aware of this but not really taking any steps to fix it. When I reported to the barista that I was having trouble connecting, he told me that he couldn't restart the connection because... actually I cant remember what his excuse was (whatever it was made no sense to me). Then he told me that the problem is just that their modem was just not meant to host very many people, and so sometimes it can be hard to connect, but once you're on, you're on. (I'm not so sure wifi works like that... at least it didnt for me.) I looked around... two people were on laptops. The main issue here is... that's a silly excuse for glitchy wifi. Either upgrade so that your customers can actually use it, or be very clear about the fact that wifi is not part of the deal here--put that info on the website like Cafe Grumpy does, so I know what's up before I buy my coffee. It's aesthetically cute, but for short people. I am six foot two and barely fit. Their coffee is decent, but a large is smaller than standard small size, and although served in the cutest of cups, for $5.00, I would expect more. Also, they were really sketchy in answering my question about the wifi, which costs money IF you don't have cable... so you essentially have to paying 100s a dollar a month for cable OR pay for wifi here. As one of Yelp's official Brazilians, it is my civic duty to frequent and review the Brazilian spots in NYC. 5 stars for the espresso. It really is quite excellent. It's smooth. Strong. Not very bitter. More importantly, it's not Stumptown! - while I do like their coffee, the proliferation of its espresso in Manhattan is a bit annoying to say the least. This is probably my favorite espresso in Manhattan now - at least on par with Abraço and Joe's. I also really liked the hot chocolate, which was nice and thick. I love the space. A lot of Brazilian places here in the US are guilty of being kitschy. O Cafe's interior is understated and has a "green" look to it with the use of recycled items. The interior is very spacious and I especially love the the floor to ceiling windows in the front. A truly great cafe needs to be on a corner and this one is on the corner of 6th Avenue and 13th Street. More importantly, there needs to be counter space that faces the street so that you can sip your espresso and people watch. Alas, you must take the good with the bad, and that includes seeing the occasional guy wearing ridiculously short shorts (I did in fact witness this while enjoying my espresso). Now the bad. The pão de queijo wasn't very good at all. Once again, a Brazilian place here in NYC hasn't quite figured out how to make it properly. Thankfully, my mom has just moved here to NYC so I will have ready access to delicious and fresh pão de queijo. The problem with the one here at O Cafe was that it was just way way too dry. It tasted stale. Pão de queijo is a very fickle thing to make. The proportions of cheese, milk, oil, and polvilho azedo (sour manioc flour) need to be perfect. It also gets stale very quickly and becomes hard as a rock after half a day. Maybe it was a bad day, I dunno. Also, I didnt see any brigadeiro in the front. Not sure if they have them or not. But it would be nice - I may not have noticed it. Despite the pão de queijo shortcomings, the cafezinho was great and I'll definitely be back. Delicious coffee - super friendly server - and very cool looking interior. I went to have a productive afternoon, perk up with some yummy Brazilian coffee and get out of the apartment. It definitely delivered the perk and a friendly face, but I'm with Laura - the seats are just NOT comfy. If you are looking to linger over your laptop (note: NO WIFI), with a nice cup o joe, make sure you get there when the few window seats are free - the only spots where it was comfortable enough to sit for a few hours. Highlights: -Nice ambiance. a nice nature/farm vibe, and laid back folksy music. -The peru pour over coffee - One of the very few black coffees that you can drink straight up black and enjoy, even if you're not a black coffee kind of person. The coffee gets five stars. -Famous kale sandwich - I've bought this 4 times in the past month. Very simply done, only a few ingredients, but just the right amount of each, no one ingredient overpowers. -More generally, each item I've tried (the famous kale and the finnish ruis) has used great bread. -The apple ginger muffin is gluten free and still tastes like a real pastry. feels like you are licking the ginger. You can really taste the flavors. Stopped by with a girlfriend before she had to head to class and while I wanted to enjoy this place, I didn't find it very impressive. The spot is gorgeous, with lots of plants and unique tableware, but when I was there the ENTIRE cafe was filled with the scent of cheese. And a pungent cheese at that. Made me desperate to get out of there. I ordered a chai latte and my friend got an iced bahia. Didn't take too long to get our orders and considering the hour it was surprising that they made them so quickly, but I didn't think my latte was very good. Tasted a bit watery. I've discovered that a lot of the places that specialize in coffee don't do chai very well. I tasted my friend's drink and it was interesting, sort of reminiscent of a dirty chai? That probably isn't a good description, but it's the closest comparison I can think of as I'm not the hugest coffee drinker. My friend comes here often and she said that she enjoys their matcha latte's and their acai bowls, and as someone who loves both of those things I intend to try them the next time I'm able. I really enjoy the organic and healthy vibes that O gives off. The dishes look as if they were made by people (as opposed to a machine), there's a compost can, the paper products are biodegradeable, and they have a menu that's vegan friendly. I order a pour over and they ask what kind of beans I want. What kind do you have? Ecuadorian and Peruvian... Guess those are their more distance parts of Brazil... My pour-over was not handled correctly. You don't pour hot water clear to the top and watch it run down slowly. That's pretend pour-over, not something worth paying $3.50 for. You pay that much if it's done properly, no complaints. Oh, and the Wi-Fi didn't work. I met here with a long time friend I have seen in years. We met in Brazil and figured meeting up in a Brazilian cafe would be nice. It was a great choice! The guy taking orders was Brazilian and so so kind which made us feel comfortable. This place is intimate with great service, the Bahia coffee special and Hibiscus iced tea as well the ball with the cheese (I forget the name). The decor is also very creative and homey. After working in the area and coming here bi-weekly for two years now, yesterday I had it. The service has always been really hit or miss but has gone incredibly down hill. When I first discovered the spot last year, I would hop in to get some work done for an hour or so. That's been virtually impossible due to the constant shoddy and unreliable internet. After spending 15 minutes or so the one day, a few months ago, trying to connect repeatedly (along with 3 other cafe patrons mind you) the barrista's solution was to "just keep trying, ok?!" and that was the last time I attempted getting my order to stay. So normally I duck in, grab my latte or bahia, and go. Most of the time it's quick and distant service. Nice but expensive product. Fake smiles all around. Yesterday (Saturday 12/13) was the final straw. I was greeted by an employee who treated me like I just murdered his grandmother's best friend and had to pay the price. Short blonde cropped hair and a dour face greeted me with the heart-warming expression of "I can't believe there's more people coming in." Okay.... I place my order and wait for a nice 15 minutes at the counter seeing beautiful cups of lattes overflowing with milk. Can't wait! Until, rather, it was my turn. I wish I would have taken a picture. It was the saddest thing ever--a latte in a medium size cup filled 2/3 of the way to the top. The explanation was "that's how we normally serve our lattes"--oh, really, yeah?? I guess the 15 minutes I spent watching a bunch of other lattes produced filled to the brim with liquid was just a figment of my imagination. When I asked the barrista to fill it, she gave me a polite look and squeezed a new more drops of lukewarm milk onto the top. Moving on. read more

It was so hot outside and i was so thirsty so i decided to take a large Iced Coffee. I paid about 4 dollars for my drink. Oh boy, this place makes me surrender my frugal-mind every time! The prices are very high - but i cannot resist their hot chocolate or their coffee!!! And then that makes me buy their muffins!! Seriously, the hot chocolate is REAL. They melt fresh chocolate made in South America and it has a deep rich texture and flavor. Their coffee is strong and they make it the way I like it. I am really picky when it comes to coffee among many things. I always like to eat/drink organic and make my own food, but they really do it right. And I realize it is because they have a great ethic and great mind towards their food, that is why it is so good. The coffee and chocolate are fair trade, and the whole store provides eco-friendly compostable materials. The tables and chairs are minimalistic - made from all wood - with the same consciousness towards the earth. I mean, it's not a super comfy place to perch up and do homework but it's really chill. They made more bench seating in the past month. The only little thing that turns me off is the annoying bougie-hipster people who are usually attracted to this store and then talk really loud and pointlessly... but that's just me, and I guess that's Greenwich Village/NYU for ya... I highly recommend this place though. I get good feelings from this cafe otherwise. They are setting the trend for more fair-trade eco-conscious businesses in NYC. read more

I really like O Cafe, and wish I lived closer to here, because then I would come everyday! I immediately like O Cafe because of its homey decor and set-up. They have large wooden tables and doesn't feel cramped despite that the cafe is quite small. I ordered an espresso which was really good and we also got a few pastries - including pao de queijo (which was DELICIOUS) and the sea salt chocolate chip cookie (which was good but not amazing - the sweet and salty were two disparate flavors instead of mixed, since the cookie basically had chunks of sea salt embedded in it). It really does replicate the vibe of a laid back local café in South America, with the friendliest staff, outstanding flavorful beverages, and authentic delicious food. I really appreciate their focus on fresh, local ingredients which they purchase right from the Union Square Farmers' Market. :) Unfortunately the space is tiny - be prepared to basically be sitting on top of everyone around you, even if you're solo. As such, not ideal for a private conversation or doing anything that requires a lot of focus. But if you can manage to snag a seat, it's the perfect spot to casually flip through the paper or a magazine while sipping one of the best lattes in the city! read more

This place is great. First, I love their coffee. The quirky decor is fun too. There's studied under-finished 'found' ply panelling, Ply chairs, and curious stools with notches cut out of the seat, one assumes for their well endowed male patrons... Anyhow it's fun and straightforward, with a sense of humour. Their coffee is like coffee should be. Delicious! Pastries and so on are good too. They use ceramic cups for which I applaud them. I first found out about this place via the bean hunter app, which seems to be mostly used in Australia. It's like yelp, but for coffee only. I keep hearing Australian accents when I'm at O cafe. I wonder if they all have bean hunter installed? If they put a flat white on the menu it would make my day, but it's very good as is. Enjoy. read more

Disclaimer: I am not a coffee drinker. O Cafe is a tiny coffee shop with friendly staff and a cozy vibe. My herbal iced tea (I forget the specific type of tea they had available that day) was delicious, and did not suffer from the brewed-in-a-coffee-pot icky aftertaste that many coffee shop iced teas suffer from. My new favorite coffee shop in the city! I have two categories of coffee I drink...I either splurge and get my expensive coffee or if I'm on a budget I'll get my cart coffee for $1.00 on the corner. This definitely fits into my expensive category, for a latte going for about $5.00. Your eyes may widen when I say $5.00 for a latte but believe me when I tell you that it's totally worth it. My favorite part about their coffees is that they can make the lattes with not only regular milk, but both soy and ALMOND. I have never tasted something so delicious as an almond milk latte. They have healthy, fresh and delicious sandwiches, as well as other treats. They offer a few gluten free options which is great for those who can't or choose not to eat gluten. I really wanted to like the place, but the fig bread had a consistency that immediately made me think of used clumping cat litter. I lived in New York City for eight years but left (for DC) before this place opened. That said, I travel to NYC each month for business and spend a good deal of time in the West Village. This coffee shop is most certainly a welcome addition to the area! In brief: the Americanos and a pastries have been consistently good, if not delicious. From time to time I even buy their coffee beans, which are great. And the service is very friendly. I am almost always greeted with a smile. As someone else said, the only downfall here is the lack of a restroom. But that's because O Cafe is designed more for a quick coffee stop than an all-day work shop.
