Kaiko Sushi and Ocean Blue Sushi merged together earlier this year. The son of Kaiko Sushi pioneered the new restaurant and each time I have visited has been a good experience. My friends normally come in large packs to late-night spots (think maybe 20 or more people) and Ocean Blue Sushi handles the crowd pretty well. All the bartenders are friendly and bring your drinks quick. The service is good and if the servers make any mistakes, they are quick to fix it. There aren't many late-night sushi spots in Clearwater (or Tampa Bay in general), but Ocean Blue Sushi offers this to customers, with occasional DJs and karaoke nights making it a cool place to be at night. They offer a 1/2 off sushi and drinks menu after 10PM that has quite a few sushi rolls for $3/$4. They also have 1/2 draft beer, wells, house wine. In addition to shot specials, such $2 kamikaze shot, lemon drops and $3 sake bombs (delicious) and upside down cupcake shots. The sushi quality was pretty good, they don't serve you spoiled fish drenched in sauce like some other late-night sushi restaurants do. I really liked their appetizers (also half-off) with the crab rangoons being my favorite. The atmosphere inside is inviting with booths and tables on one side of the restaurant and large tables for groups and a dance floor/DJ booth on the other side. There is also patio seating as well. During big events the place occasionally gets slammed with lots of customers, but overall I think the experience they are offering deserves a shout-out. So it's been awhile... And I came back for the number 1 dish I love more than anything in this world and it was Charlie's famous Spicy Salad. I have had this dish so many times that I dream about it. It's just that good and everyone I get to try it is hooked! Since things have changed with the business I was hoping it would improve. Yeah, the exterior and interior has improved, but sadly the quality of the food is disappointing. We ordered the dynamite shrimp, spicy salad and a super crunchy roll and was disappointed with each dish. Nothing tasted the same nor tasted good at all. The dynamite shrimp was too soggy and extra breaded. Which means barely any shrimp. I used to love eating this appetizer as a starter and/or meal with rice. The super crunchy barley had any scallop filling and was mainly rice. I only took two bites and each was just a mouthful of rice. Not an impressive roll at all. Lastly.... The biggest disappointment was the spicy salad. It's a dish you can't find anywhere else and I instantly fell in love the first time I had it. Sooo... The spicy salad we received was more like cat puke. It was a plate of mixed up "fish" that was one shade of color. The taste was also different and nothing like before which was a distinctive spicy sesame sauce. We brought it up to Dan's attention, the bartender aka Chalie's son and he informed us that it does taste different but basically almost the same....... And gave it back to us. Seriously.... Met up at this place for a friend's birthday and I must say that I am very impressed. This bar is ran by a small family and they were all able to manage the whole restaurant because we filled that place up. The bartender was very friendly and was the son of the owners and he was able to keep track of all the tabs which is incredible. We had a spicy tuna roll since we weren't too hungry and it was delicious! We had a couple of drinks as well and they were great. They also have a DJ place where they used to hold karaoke and some of the people that came to the party brought a sound system and plugged it in and it was a great night. Features several speciality rolls and potstickers between $4 to $6 but requires you to buy an alcoholic drink to get the discount. Sushi is subpar. But service is good. Without a doubt the worst sushi you can get in Clearwater/Dunedin. Tried this place twice, first time we had a hair in our sushi, and the second experience was just terrible. From the waitress forgetting our soup to the fishiest, dry "snow crab" I've ever had the displeasure of putting in my mouth. This place is just the worst. The sushi rolls are absolutely tiny and made with the lowest quality ingredients. But at least you get to listen to club music referencing fornication all night while choking down the terrible sushi. Finally had a chance to try Ocean Blue. I wanted to make a reservation, but no one ever answered the phone. I was a little doubtful about what I would encounter and was very happy I still decided to go. The restaurant is huge so a reservation wasn't necessary. (I guess that's why they don't answer the phone, though I did see takeout but maybe they answer later in the day). Now, the important stuff. The Sapporo was really cold. I'm not a saki fan, but they did have a nice selection. They also had a full bar and a large selection of beer. Tried the shrimp shumai and it was a little on the tasteless side. I used to order it quite often when I lived in NY and it was not as good as I remember from then. However, the super protein roll was delicious with beautifully fresh fish. The same with the yellow tail sashimi. It almost melted in my mouth. The only disappointment was we ordered the vegetable roll off the sushi menu but asked that it be made with cucumber instead of rice. As with Beachwood, the cucumber was way too thick. Also, they upcharged us $4 for switching out the cucumber for rice so I would be careful if you want to do that with any other rolls. read more

I decided to try this place based on outstanding word-of-mouth from someone I recently met that it is better than Hiro's. This person insisted Ocean Blue topped overall in quality of food and mom-and-pop service. I was all about supporting a new place, and gave this shot a try. WORST SERVICE OF MY LIFE. Possibly the worst waitress and management I will ever encounter. Let me explain. First, the half off drinks and sushi selection is a joke. It's a measly one-page of simple rolls. The location itself is set in an uninspiring, older plaza. When we came in, there was practically no one-- which was a shocker because I was expecting the bulk of people taking advantage of half-off sushi on a Saturday evening. I dragged out initially 5 others, and then 2 more couples came in. When the first couple sat down, the waitress said in an unenthusiastic, yet annoyed tone saying, "Oh, there's more of you." We decided to move to the patio when everyone agreed the indoors was too warm, and one member of our group decided to inform the front hostess/manager. The two couples in the group got their sushi first, and after a while, I decided to inquire about the sushi rolls I ordered along with my drink. She blatantly said, "You did not order any sushi" when I knew I clearly did. To give her the benefit of the doubt anyway, I let her know to proceed with the order. Five minutes later, she brings the check for everyone at my table. My sushi was not even out yet! She was clearly pushing us out the door. A young, naive waitress-- I can tell she was not properly trained in basic customer service, nor proper etiquette for that matter. A staff member is a representative and a reflection of your business. If you cannot build a proper impression of your establishment, people will know and they will talk. At this internet age, reviews will make or break you. If you're craving half-off sushi and drinks, just go to Hiro's. They have a much larger selection, a more hyped up crowd, and better staff. You will wait much longer for your sushi, but you will never be disrespected or disregarded as a customer. I am in no way a friend of Ocean Blue's major competitor, Hiro's. In fact, I initially came here because I was promised a higher sense of quality and service and I am always open to support other businesses. Needless to say, I am severely disappointed at the TERRIBLE LEVEL OF CUSTOMER SERVICE. To top it all, the manager gave not even a look in my eye when I tried to set him aside privately to voice my concerns with him. This place has good and bad points. I will start with the bad - food & service: The Sushi: is mediocre at best - however it is tough to complain given the low price they offer (half off sushi after 10 pm). It goes without saying, they are able to offer a low price due to the low quality of ingredients. The Staff: is often disorganized and seem ill-equiped to handle a busy night at the resteraunt. I also suspect that many of the American born, Asian staff are pretending to not know English - in an attempt to avoid customer interaction. The Good News: The place does have a fun atmosphere, with music, a live DJ, and sometimes karaoke. The bar and restaruant as a whole, seem to be clean. The cheap price (after 10 pm), and overall atmosphere of the place is just enough to compensate for the low food quality and subpar wait staff, for me not to say I wouldn't visit again. One final note: I cannot confirm this, so I don't want to spread any false rumors - but I have a serious suspicion that they water down their sake, so that customers end up buying more. Last night, I drank two and a half large bottles by myself and felt little to no effect from the "alcohol". Again - I can't confirm if they are in fact watering their booze down, other than my own drinking experiance. read more

We went here after one of our coworkers told us that it was the "#1 sushi bar in town." I consider myself a sushi snob so I had to try this place for myself. We were really excited to hear that they have a 1/2off menu after 10pm. Couldn't wait to see what the hype was about. The restaurant itself is pretty nice, with copper plated table tops and fancy high booths. One side had live karaoke while the other side had more of a dinner date atmosphere. It was very pleasant. The 1/2 off menu included about 5 different appetizers and about 10 different rolls. Nothing special here: the usual spicy tuna, Tampa, mexican, scallop, etc. All basic rolls for $3-5 each. We ordered 4 rolls, one appetizer, two shots (lemon drop and upside down cupcake as recommended by the previous reviewer), and some Mochi ice-cream to finish it off with. Total bill was $30. The portion was rather small, which was expected given the low price. it was very basic sushi with nothing to really make me say wow. The cupcake shot did taste like a cupcake, which was kind of weird as a shot. Mochi ice cream was good (we got the red bean and mango). Overall this place certainly does an okay job with sushi. It's a great place to go if you're looking for some cheap, basic sushi for a late night meal! read more

First of all, I was confused by the name... Is it Ocean Blue? or Is it Kaiko Sushi? A friend mentioned that they had good sushi so I wanted to try it. Well I won't be coming back! The décor was a bit odd... take a look in the corner and you will see a Chucky Doll in a box... why is that there?... probably to collect dust like some of the other odd décor items. Ordered Krab Rangoon appetizer which was ok... I imagine them being frozen in a big bag and then quickly thrown in a fryer. Then ordered two specialty rolls...Volcano Roll and the Tuna Shotgun.... Both just ok... something seemed a bit off... both were a bit 'mushy', They weren't 'crisp' and didn't seem really fresh. After dinner, we decided to try the fried ice cream. I've had this before, years ago, at another restaurant. This version was two large portions of vanilla ice cream with some type of 'crust' which again, didn't seem fresh... Not what I was expecting. All in all... just fair... would definitely NOT recommend. The place didn't feel totally clean and we were seated at a booth with duct tape on the seat. The service was great! So my beloved Kaiko moved into Charlie's other restaurant Ocean Blue a few months ago. Thanks, Carlos H. for beating me to this review : / I kid. I kid. :) I just moved back to the area. I grew up in Tarpon Springs and have now moved to Tampa. Busy settling into my new neck of town, I hadn't been over to see Charlie until last night. I was shocked by the move but happy it wasn't too far (a few doors down to be exact). I was confused by the shark with bull horns... I'll have to ask Charlie about that the next time I go in. I was pleased to see that it was basically as if they had lifted Kaiko in a fork lift and dropped it inside Ocean Blue's doors- same bamboo entrance, same neon specials board, same ol' Charlie :) I was also pleased to be seated in a very comfy booth so I could catch up with an old friend. She introduced me to the Sunomono (I usually start with a seaweed salad). Mmmmm, sweet vinegary goodness. We ordered our favorite rolls (Scott Roll included of course!) and commenced to catch up on our lives for the past year or so. No place better for us to do this than Kaiko/Ocean Blue. Of course I saved the Scott Roll for my last bite. There's just something about the way Charlie makes all the flavors blend so well. There's nothing like it anywhere else. As I've said in my review of Kaiko, they don't really offer the fancy pants rolls that you find at many sushi restaurants these days. They keep it simple with more focus on the fish. And as much as I love a fancy roll with mango and such, this is what makes Kaiko my all time favorite! read more

The atmosphere is nice, the service was great. My man and I both ordered miso soup, and sunomono salad. Actually it wasn't sunomono, it was more like a shit ton of sliced cucumbers thrown in a bowl with a gallon of rice vinegar swimming in it. I could barely take two bites and was over powered by feeling like I was drinking the vinegar. I usually like sunomono salad but it had no rice noodles...just drowning cucumbers. The miso soup was average... Nothing special. I could have driven over to publix and bought those miso packets and not have known the difference. The tofu wasn't fresh...if there was even any in it? I like miso soup but I like it fresh, the tofu, the seaweed all of it should be fresh if it is real Japanese miso soup. The sushi wasn't bad. I'm from Alaska so I was spoiled with real salmon...not the farmed. There is a difference. In taste and color. The sushi in Alaska is pretty damn good. If you eat at the right restraunt. I really wanted to like thiis place because the bartender was great (the first talkative friendly bartender since moving down from up north a few weeks ago.) He even made a drink special for my husband because he didn't see anything on the menu he liked. We ordered one roll to test the waters. It wasn't good. I don't know how, but it was extremely salty and the fish portions seemed off. We just haven't found better sushi than Aki since being down here. Pretty standard as sushi places go. I got a spicy tuna roll with salmon and yellowtail on top. The salmon wasn't as pink as I've would have liked. The spicy tuna was spicy but not too unbearable. Just the right amount of heat I like. My best friend and I go here probably once a month and we absolutely love their sushi! We get the volcano roll, sexy roll and TNT Roll and they are very presentable and delicious! All the staff is very nice and stays on top of refills and to check if you need anything or just to check to see how things are! I definitely plan on continuing my business with them! I've seen some crazy things happen at this restaurant in the several months I've visited. Usually it's from customers that aren't so reasonable to deal with, but that's what happens when you go out with a drinking crowd (a few of my friends are guilty of this, but I make sure to put them in line!). Service, when you're nice, is pretty good. They handle any questions you might have and the manager walks around every so often to check up on everyone. Overall, I'd say it's been a pretty pleasant experience and I've never had any troubles that weren't immediately taken care of. The food is what you'd expect from Tampa Bay's #1 sushi place. The owner of Kaiko works here as well and the quality still lives up to its name. I have a blast coming here on the weekends and eating with others at the sushi bar. Friday late nights are pretty fun. Very loud if you're into that sort of thing. I recommend trying it out! Met some awesome people here! read more

I went here because people rave about the sushi. The raw tuna (I rarely order it) was fresh and delicious. The maki rolls were pencil thin. A little more rice and some ingredients would have been better. They were good even though there wasn't too much to them. My daughter had the Chicken Katsu. It was horrible. I think it was a frozen piece already breaded. It was tough, over cooked and not very tasty. I may go back but I'm certainly not running there. When I walked in the place the tables smelled like they were wiped down with a dirty rag. For sushi I recommend it, for maki I don't and certainly not for the chicken katsu. read more

Nothing really wowed me and had me dying to go back. The sushi was fine but was probably the smallest rolls I've gotten from anywhere in the TB area. The sushi did come out much faster than I was expecting which almost made me think everything is pre-made in the back. It was less than 5 minutes for 4 different rolls.
