I tried this place with Duke C. after hitting up the 24 hr fitness up the street, so needless to say we came pretty close to closing time. Duke was the one who mentioned this place having a Cinnamon Roll french toast, and our imaginations went nuts. I was envisioning a cinnabun roll smushed flat so it got a crispy layer on it and that this dish would rock my world. But i was hungry so I got the Kapiko skillet. The food comes out and i was like nice my skillet seems pretty hearty and yes got a side of biscuits also. I see Duke's Cinnamon Roll French Toast and at that moment i knew the dream in him had died. The french toast paled in comparison to what I had ordered. Well back to my skillet. The skillet was great, everything tasted fresh and not as oily and gross as Denny's skillets usually are (but i get the meat lovers there so it doesnt help) I devoured my biscuits which were nice and soft and the gravy was great. I used that and poured it over my skillet and just went to town. We also had an order of chili cheese fries, but it wasnt amazeballs or anything, it was average and did its duty. I cant fault them because they are a breakfast diner type and you only get chili cheese fries at those burger joints. Overall this place is a good place for breakfast items and has good portions for food. I would give this place a solid 3.5 stars, just because the prices are a little high and your experience can vary. The service was great and friendly so no knock there either. It just seemed a little expensive but not too bad. Just try the place and review it since the reviews do seem mixed. PS. Aight - I've been here many times (it's walking distance from my house), but I am not going to do a review of the breakfast (aside to say that I do NOT like their coffee). I don't think it's a well known fact but they are open for dinner now! So I will review my DINNER experience with Ocean diner. :) We showed up around 8 PM on a Monday night - there was only maybe 4 other patrons in the restaurant. Fair enough, it closes at 9 and still hasn't garnered a dinner crowd yet. My bf and I decided to both order off the dinner menu - he got the pot roast and I got the chicken pot pie. We also ordered a side of the heavily touted creamed corn. Dang! Each meal cost around $11, and you get a TON of food with it. My salad was super yummy, and my boyfriend got the split pea with ham (but it doesn't have too much ham in it, like The Kettle's version of split pea. My chicken pot pie had all white meat, and a freshly baked crust. It easily feeds two - I had to take half of it home. The pot roast is also a great meal - slightly on the bland side - I recommend utilizing the pepper/salt to get it to where you want it. I personally found the creamed corn too.. uhh... creamy? I wasn't a fan, but if you love creamed corn, I say try it out, let me know what you think. I am not a creamed corn expert. Great, old style food! This restaurant was one of the first places I hit when I lived here nine years ago. Fast forward to 2011, I have returned for the first time as a nonresident and I thought it was fitting to make a return for a early dinner. The chicken tenders are (as they proclaim) better than the Colonel... 5 huge pieces fried in a crispy coating, mixed veggies and mashed potatoes was much more than filling for under $11. The ranch dipping sauce was a bit runny, but it certainly didn't take away from the flavor of the chicken. The green bean/carrot combination had a light buttery flavor which was quite good. The mashed potatoes were ok. I have had better, and since I forgot to ask for gravy on the side, what flavor the potatoes had was buried under gravy. Im glad to see this gem is still around. It gets wicked crazy during breakfast, but go for dinner and you might have the place to yourself like I did. read more

Wife loved her banana granola french toast. I hated my chicken fried steak. the chicken fried steak tasted healthy, which would be okay but the gravy was horrible. no flavor. and just tasted like bland flour. I much prefer Beach Break Cafe in Oceanside. Delicious gravy. But I think I would come back again to try other dishes. I was also disappointed in the home fries. It had a crisp layer but then just tasted like boiled potatoes. This is just my preference I like fried and crispy all the way around. read more

Overrated. 2.5 stars Maybe I ordered the wrong thing? I got the Lulu's Skillet with bacon and basted eggs. I felt like the whole thing was ONLY covered in potatoes... which definitely didn't help because the entire skillet was pretty bland to begin with. Eggs were overcooked. All those huge chunks of starch only made it even more bland. I did like the muffins, but nothing out of this world. The "fresh squeezed" orange juice also didn't taste very fresh and was overpriced. To be fair, my friends did enjoy their pancakes + the "real" maple syrup... so again, maybe I ordered the wrong thing. I'd rather go to OPH where there's no real "wrong thing" to order, though. Each time I go, I end up loving this place more than the last time. Good people, good food, good times had by all! I haven't tried their dinner, but their breakfast options are just perfect! We love the apple creme brûlée waffles and their crunchy French toast and love their skillets and their omelettes. In my new determination to try out all the breakfast places near my new little nest, I came onto yelp to discover yet another one. The service at the beginning was a bit slow, and it took them about 5 minutes to take our order at the beginning. My bf got the Cinnamon Roll French Toast and I got the Killer Omelette. That's when the service became excellent, beyond my own expectations. The food arrive about five minutes later, and it was DELICIOUS. I highly recommend asking the the salsa when trying the omelette, because while most places I go to have warm salsa that tastes like it was made the day before, this salsa tasted fresh, and went so well with the chorizo and jalepenos in my delicious omelette. My bf upgraded for the real maple syrup for 1.60, an option I was happy to see on the menu, because crappy, fake pancake syrup can destroy and carb-filled breakfast food. He really liked it, surprising, because he basically thinks all breakfast food it "ok". It was the smalls things too, like the staff was on top of things, and right when I was about to say "ask for the check", the waiter shows up with it, like was was reading my mind. The butter they serve with their bread is the nice spreadable kind (I don't understand why places give you stone cold butter with their bread. It's so obnoxious...) This is easily the best food I've had since being in California, and that is saying a whole lot! I got the Sullivan's Scramble (scrambled eggs, Caramelized onions, spinach, goat cheese, and bacon with a side of potatoes) and I added avocado.... It was amazing. Everyone absolutely loved their food (we had seven people all who ordered different things) and the food was homemade and HUGE portions. I don't think anyone was able to finish their meal. It's a small place, but it seems like they are always busy. It is totally worth it though. I cannot wait to come back here! Also, the tortillas are absolutely the best. This has real pieces of bacon IN the waffle mix and also comes with eggs and more bacon. Really good and giant sized waffle. They even gave us the option of melted butter to pour over. Genius! He went with scrambled eggs which he said were cold but still good eggs, tough to get everything hot when the place is so packed. I had the 2-2-3 which consists of eggs whatever style pancakes or French toast and bacon or sausage. I went with eggs over medium, which were cooked PERFECTLY! So good, been a while since someone got it right. Pancakes, a little overdone but delicious flavor. And bacon, mine were luke warm Unfortunately. I also added a side of banana to have as a topping to my pancakes-yum! We discovered these actually tasted better on the waffles!! A quick weekend trip for business paired with a long-night-of-drinking-induced-hangover took me to Hermosa Beach and the Ocean Diner. The spot is small with limited parking but the food and service are more than make up for it. The staff is friendly and efficient and happy to chat up the day or questions with you. The owner (at least I think he was the owner...) was milling about, greeting guests, filling coffee, and busing tables. The menu is mammoth with a ton of board specials. We opted for a breakfast sandwich with potatoes and sausage gravy and the crunchy French toast which includes granola and bananas and your choice of protein. I didn't dive into the lunch, dinner, or dessert options but did skim the menu and would definitely come back for more if I were local to the area. read more

Came here for brunch on Sunday around the later afternoon. There was about a 15 min wait so I put my name down, then looked for parking. There is a tiny parking lot in the back or street parking. The inside is spacious but pretty jam packed. They have counter seats and tables. I love the art deco and little touches of very old school classic vibes. The menu is huge! So much to choose from, it can be a bit overwhelming. _The Morning After ($12.50) Scrambled eggs with chorizo, bacon, sausage and potatoes. Topped with Jack cheese, avocado and salsa. This was pretty popular on yelp, and seemed like the most eye catching to me. It came in a skillet and was a pretty good portion. The flavor profile was all there. You get sweetness, saltiness, and a bit of a kick. Everything was cooked perfectly, the potatoes were great to add some starch and soak up the warm salsa. Filling and satisfying, We got the pumpkin muffin (comes in 2) with this and it was great as well. Very moist, warm, and not overpowering. A nice change to just toast. _Tortilla Scramble ($11.25) Eggs scrambled with green onions, tomatoes, crisp tortilla chips, cilantro and Jack cheese. Topped with guacamole. Choice of toast, muffins or biscuits. I ordered this one and I'm glad I did. I asked for easy cheese, since I'm lactose. I like cheese but sometimes people put way too much. This was just right. Everything was cooked great. But what I loved the most was how after all the heat, the tortilla chips were still crunchy. They were all cut to pieces, which I also like because it made it easy to eat, and you always get that perfect bite with the chips. I wish they added a bit more fresh avocado. I asked for salsa on the side, warmed up and it was great with this dish as well. Added a bit more flavor and kick. The potatoes were good, I wish they were a tad more crispy. _Morning Glory Muffin. My dish came with choices of bread, but I opted for this (extra charge) instead. It was so popular on yelp and it looked like my style of muffin so it was a no brainer. Similar to carrot cake but without the cream cheese frosting. Every bite you'll taste apples, sunflower seeds, carrots, raisins etc... Lots of textures, a bit sweet, but not dessert sweet. Just enough to leave you satisfied. It came with butter, but it was not even necessary as it was so good and filled with flavor. It was a pretty big muffin as well. I would eat this with just coffee and be thrilled. Overall great experience and can't wait to come back. Service was great, felt like it was family owned, friendly and accommodating. read more

Delicious, great diner feel, and a true bargain for the amazing quality of the meal. Stopped in for the first time on a Sunday right before noon. We were lucky enough to snag the last two spots at the counter before the line started to form outside for the lunch rush. Great coffee and fantastic food! I had manny's skillet and ate every last bite of it. It was flavorful, spicy and so perfect. I was quite (happily) impressed that there was no excess oil from the chorizo. It really was a delicious skillet! For two coffees and two breakfast items our bill came out to under $30, we will be back! Can't wait to try more of the menu! read more

This was a great place!! Our food was awesome! When we got there they said 5 min wait, but we ended up getting seated right away. It is a little loud, but for a family/community regular place it was great. I got the Bongo Scramble. It was the perfect size. Not too much food. Coffee is on point!
