While celebrating our anniversary, my wife and I dined here mostly because it was located in our hotel. Ocean Hai is an upscale sushi restaurant. Instead of a traditional sushi chef, you can watch chefs prepare meals. The menu is laden with cooked food as opposed to sushi/sashimi. We went to Ocean Hai for the latter and that's where the disappointment started. For sushi/sashimi there were only four choices: eel, tuna, salmon and white tuna. That's it! Next disappointment was that they did not order hot sake. We've dined in a plethora of sushi restaurants and have always been able to have hot sake. I really wanted to leave at that point but it was a Monday and all other nearby sushi restaurants were closed. I had one order of each of the four sushi options. The quality of the fish was good but definitely not worth the price. Further, the sushi was made with an abundance of rice which is a practice at lower end sushi restaurants as a cheap filler. Lastly, this restaurant automatically added 19 percent gratuity to the bill. Of all the restaurants we visited while in Clearwater this was the only one to do this. For a restaurant called Ocean Hai, there were unfortunately a lot of lows.... The last thing I want to say after dropping nearly $250 on date night. The ambiance was fine, but the service was less than subpar... reminiscent of what'd I get from Popeyes down the road. Beginning with waiting 15 minutes for drinks, which were semi decent if I'm being generous. I ordered tuna sashimi, waited 20 minutes, got brought salmon sashimi, pointed out the error and 10 minutes later was brought tuna nigiri, still not right but I guess it's a little better. At no point did my server check in with the correction or apologize for the mistake, over the course of the night I saw the food runner more than I ever saw my server. My oysters I requested to be brought out with a glass of brut, instead I got the oysters and ten minutes later I got a glass of the wrong Prosecco, with my server nowhere to be found to rectify this mistake. He seemed to care little for our enjoyment of the meal, and instead was coasting on his guaranteed gratuity. I was highly disappointed with the meal both in quality of food and quality of service. My check was given with an auto gratuity of near 20% (which my server did not deserve after such a poor dining experience) I implore you Ocean Hai, do better. I spent a lot of money here and I can't help but feel it would've been better spent at any of the other upscale restaurants around the Tampa Bay Area. read more

This place is disaster! Don't be fooled by its fancy decor, which would be the only pro to this restaurant. We were sick during the trip and were looking for some comforting pho for dinner. Searched and turned out that it is the only place we can have pho on the island without driving for like half and hour. They charge 20 bucks for a pho, which we accepted and thought that's the pay off for not needing to calling a taxi or drive far out. This decision turned out to be a huge mistake!!! THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT A PHO IS!!! Never had a "pho" like this in my life, soaked in soy sauce water! even food court ones are much authentic and tasted wayyyyy better. What's in their so called "pho": a handful of rice noodle which texture is super funny(feels like it's either uncooked or have been soaked in water for days), some fried tiger shrimp and one big fried scallop, a couple uncooked tasteless peas, AND THEN they pour a dark brown soy sauce like broth in to make it a soup noodle. OMG, that broth terrified me! To the owner/chef of the restaurant: please do some research before opening a restaurant and putting that item on your menu! The way you make the "pho" is not a way of creativity at all. In no way that thing is closed to what common sense understand as "pho", which essence lies in its broth- either slow cooked beef or chicken. Not a quick mix of pure soy sauce and dilute with hot water! In fact, like Thai food, Vietnamese mostly use fish sauce as their version of soy sauce. I am no pro but making Asian food is not simply pour some soy sauce in it and call it Asian. And there so many different types of Asian cuisine you need to study before opening a so called "fusion" restaurant. Again for god sake, do your research and know what you are actually serving. I understand that some people want to just make some quick money, but do it in a more dignified way ok?! Side notes: 1.services are extremely slow, waited 20 minuets plus for some salad appetizer and those stupid pho came like half an hour later. 2. We ordered the Pulled Pork Ramen and an Eel and Avocado Roll, along with some sort of crispy brussel sprout appetizer. The brussel sprouts had a strange texture and the ramen needed something. I hate to not give five stars but the quality of the food did not match the price point. The pad Thai was not very traditional but it was good. My friend ordered her dish with no peanuts and she found peanuts in her dish there was no offer to fix the situation so we just let it go. ( Thankfully she is not allergic). Our server was kind and personable. It was late and near closing time, he forgot my green tea, we let that go, then realize there was an added gratuity to the check. After the peanut issue and the tea I probably would have tipped 15%. I usually tip 20% or more for exceptional service, but I felt this wasn't that. Over-all the sushi was my favorite. read more

Staying at the Wydham Grand and it's the perfect location on Clearwater Beach. This upscale asian fare is quite delicious. They outsource local ingredients, natural and organic when possible. I already had too much to eat before dining here, so I only ordered a few starters. (Plus, I was too lazy to leave the hotel, lol). Hmm. Not a big fan here. I don't even know where to start. Drinks and view were the best thing here. Asian pear smash was my drink. The pork belly ramen sounded great but when it was time to eat. It just didn't deliver, why would u take a Japanese dish and try to make it taste not like ramen. The tomato broth threw it off. I felt like I was eating bun rieu. A tomato soup based Vietnamese noodle dish. Sushi dish was bad and it came out last. It was faster to Cooke the chicken tenders, lamb chops, and ramen then prep the sushi. How bad? It tasted like any fast food sushi joint. I mean ur local Japanese supermarket had better sushi. When someone orders seared salmon. Don't be lazy and sear the piece of salmon first then cut slices. Cut the slices first then sear it. I asked my wife how her lamb chop. Her response was "ittts ookkkay" that was her response because she picked the spot. Then the receipt comes and there's an automatic 19% gratuity to any and every party. I don't mind the 19% gratuity at a fine dining restaurant if the service and FOOD was considered fine dining. Save urself the time and money and avoid this spot. So we gave our server $200 for our check, $193 check with the 19% gratuity already added and I swear it's been at least 20 mins to give us our change back. Just let me leave and forget this place. So we asked her for our change cuz the wait was ridiculous. It's Wednesday night not a busy weekend. She said her boss is bringing it. Then our server returns to our table with our $7 change and puts it on the table on top of my napkin without the bill folder, and walks away. You are calling this a fine dining experience, you bring me my bill with a bill folder like pictured below. But when u bring me my change u lag and then just throw $7 bucks on top of my napkins....plz if ur gonna be calling urself fine dining at least act like one. Bring the change back in the bill folder or hand the $7 back to me. I'm Asian so when u throw the change on the table and walk off, that's disrespectful. I would have waived my gratuity fee but I'm on vacation. I didn't wanna waste anymore time on his place or this server. Keep the gratuity. The steak was good however it was definitely cooked medium well when it was supposed to be medium rare . For such a high price and nice restaurant we were disappointed that the cook on the steak wasn't right. However the flavors and sides made it edible 2. The lobster was amazing and fresh and cooked well 3. The cherry blossom desert was so unique and different. It comes with cotton candy on top and inside is chocolate with some kind of cherry mousse and dried cherry pieces. The flavors and textures in this were amazing . I suggest ordering this inside and not out side. The humidity outside causes the cotton candy to melt very fast. Overall: I would go back to eat here again. I was so ready to give this restaurant a 4 or 5 star review. The food was uncommonly thoughtful and delicious. The service was mediocre, but friendly, so I was going back and forth between 4 and 5 stars as I ate. I was planning to write about how this was my first introduction to Clearwater and I had no idea what to expect and that, visiting from DC, I found it to have similar price points to posh restaurants in DC but with higher quality food. I was going to talk about the innovative treatment of the fried brussels sprouts I had had, and how I still don't know whether I liked the spice cake with curry sauce but absolutely found it worth trying. But then I got my check. Now, I was expecting this place to be expensive, so that part was fine. But they had automatically added 19% gratuity. I'm here on business. I was seated BY MYSELF. At the sushi bar, no less (probably why my service was so slapdash, because my drink and non-sushi items were being brought by a server who was otherwise assigned to tables). If it was stated somewhere on the menu then I missed it. I certainly wasn't verbally forewarned until the server dropped off the check at my seat, and presumably she told me then to make sure that I didn't think that was the pre-tip subtotal and flip out. I have never in my life had gratuity added to a bill for fewer than 6 people, except for one ridiculously snooty restaurant in DC that added it for 4 people and to which I have never returned. There was an insert in my...folio thing? receipt case? I don't know what that thing is called, the thing they bring the check in. The insert said that if the 19% gratuity was "inconvenient" for me I could ask my server to remove it, but then that puts me in the awkward position of having to ask my server to do so. In reality, I would probably have ended up near that amount in tip anyway. For mediocre service I give 15% but I do lazy math and round up and typically end up around 17% or 18% anyway. So it wasn't worth squabbling over an additional, what, 1 or 2% of my bill? But to have it added for me was simply offensive. What if I hated my service? What if, being on a per diem, I had budgeted and made my menu choices with the understanding that I would be giving exactly 15% tip (which is, last I checked, still considered standard) ? I would then have had to pull aside my server and explain why I wasn't giving her the higher tip amount? Before I saw this I was already planning to come again for lunch since I'm staying in the hotel in which it's located, but now I probably won't just because this left such a bad taste in my mouth. It really ruined an otherwise great meal. I don't know if this was this particular restaurant or something Wyndham does (this is my first stay in a Wyndham), but I eat in hotel bars and restaurants all the time and have never seen this before. An earlier review says that the servers have to split their tips with the hotel? I'm not sure I believe that but if it's true, shame on you Wyndham. That's unfairly exploiting customers and employees in the same act. But barring that, I just can't get over this. At that point, if it's automatic, and it applies to parties as small as 1, it's not gratuity anymore, it's an automatic 19% service charge. read more

The prior night we had tried to do a walk in and was asked to wait 10-15 minutes at the bar and they would come get us. After 45 minutes I asked to check the status and it seemed they forgot however didn't own up to the mistake, I cancelled the table as it was 9:45PM. I returned 5 minutes later to ask what went wrong as we were both still keen on trying this place since we were staying at the Wyndham, they admitted fault however it appeared as it was normal as no apologies were given. They made up for it the next day with a complimentary dessert so everything worked out fine. We had the oysters, if you like oysters get them here as they were fresh and well shucked. Sashimi and nigiri sampler was nice and at a decent standard. We had the oandan waffle and mochi sampler dessert, both were fantastic. Worth trying if you're close by, staying at the Windham or feel like sushi. read more

We were a party of 3. Shame on me for not being my dad and reviewing the bill like an accountant, but not cool. My server could have easily let us roll out. Started off a little rocky by waiting an hour when the restaurant had plenty of open tables.. after we brought it to their attention, they sat us right away and did their best to make it up to us. Halle was our server and she treated us excellent. We got two sushi rolls to split between the 5 of us. The Baja and the Poseidon. Both delicious! I got the lobster fried rice. It wasn't the best thing I've ever had but it was good! The shrimp pad Thai my friend got was even better. Overall it was a beautiful beach side meal on our vacation. read more

Being a local, I've eaten at pretty much every restaurant at Clearwater Beach. When a new one opens, it automatically goes on the list for our next date night. We made a reservation and went for an early dinner on a Saturday (~6pm). We were seated right away and there weren't many other people in the restaurant. It's tastefully decorated and our table had a nice view of the patio and beach. After looking over the menu, we decided to the Omakase option with the wine pairing. I love restaurants that have this option!! At first glance, you might think it's pricey ($75/person + $25/person if you chose to do the wine pairing), but it is definitely worth it!! The meal started with complimentary edamame that is in a black salt and olive oil. It's a large portion and was delicious! We also each began with a crab Rangoon, which was also a tasty way to begin dinner. When the omakase courses started, we were extremely pleased with the offerings. In total, we had about 8 courses. Some of my favorites were the miso soup (it's not like any miso I've had before--it has a mussel in it, which gives it a seafood taste--and they pour the broth from a kettle table side); the grouper was incredible--it was presented with a lobster bisque sauce and it was perfect; the whitetail sashimi was very fresh; the lamb is something I would definitely consider as an entree--I usually don't order lamb chops, but these were delicious and served with a side of bokchoy and mushrooms. Each course came with a very generous wine tasting. The service was fabulous and quick. I can't wait to go back again...this might be my new favorite date night menu! read more

The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars was because after we were finished it took our server 30 minutes to bring our checks and they were all wrong, he went back to " fix them" though he had not bothered to ask who had what. When he came back again they were still wrong and I caught him before he walked back and told him our orders so he would get the checks right. Again it took another 20 for him to come back with the correct checks. We were there for 50 extra minutes after finishing everything! I was very impressed with the decor of this restaurant. From the moment I walked in it felt like this place was going to impress and I have to say it definitely help up to the atmosphere and decor. We had the wagyu beef skewer starter as well as the champion Sushi. (Rich Asian I believe) for the main meal we had the grouper and the seafood hot pot. Again not sure the name. lol well as you can see in the photos the dishes definitely looked amazing and tasted just as good. Flavors hit every taste bud and the vegetables were fresh tasting. I give it a 4 star just because it didn't completely wow me. Oh and Andi our waitress was very knowledgeable and every recommendation she made was in point. Give this place a shot you won't be disappointed. This is one of my must stops when I visit Clearwater. It's one of the best restaurants with amazing food, great service, and a perfect ambiance. The chef made me a vegan stir fry and it was so fresh and one of the best I've ever had. My husband had the grouper and said it was one of his best meals. Andrew was our server and was super knowledgeable about the menu and was so personable with our party of 11. They accommodated our large party and had us in the chefs table room which was a private room just for us. I can't say enough good things about Ocean Hai! Really hate to leave this 3 star review but I left with an underwhelming feeling. We were disappointed when we arrived on a Saturday afternoon that the only menu options were brunch items until 2pm. I could understand this maybe on a Sunday, but not a Saturday afternoon. We decided to go elsewhere and try it again for dinner. For dinner we started off with sushi. The Yamaha roll was ok, but nothing special. I did enjoy the free steamed edamame with smoked black salt. We decided to give the ramen a try. While I enjoyed the presentation the broth was poured atop of the noodles but the noodles were a bit egg-y in my opinion and threw off the entire balance of the dish. The pork belly had a near perfect caramilzation and the pear smash cocktail was delightful. The service was a bit of a let down. Everything was served in a timely manner but no personalization was added and it seemed a bit boring. All in all it was a decent meal but in such an outstanding atmosphere I expected a bit more. read more

Food is awesome. Service leaves a lot to be desired and that is being kind. We've eaten here twice in the last 6 weeks. Both times, service destroys what has the potential of being a great dining option on Clearwater Beach. That said, to make matters worse, now they add a 19% tip. Generally, I probably would tip 15 to 20 percent for fair service. Even tonight, I would have tipped 20% on what resembled service that one would expect at Denny's or Waffle House. Sadly, the food is more than decent. In fact, they have a chocolate mousse that is severely under defined on the menu. When I told my better half that she would like the mousse because it had bittersweet chocolates, whipped cream and berries, I sold her on trying it. When we asked the server what berries it had, her response was "usually blackberries". Absolutely nothing beyond that! Well, talk about not up-selling and making the guest really want to try an item, she absolutely showed her lack of menu knowledge as well as any interest in telling us just how great their pastry chef must be. When the mousse arrived, it was a work of art. This blackberries and bittersweet chocolate mousse included not only blackberries, but also fresh thinly sliced strawberries, a key lime sauce and a passion fruit sauce. The mousse consisted of a dark chocolate bittersweet shell with a chocolate mousse inside the shell that had a "cookie" base (better half thought it had the taste of toffee, but "cookie" was all the description we got). In short, the presentation was awesome and the combination of the ingredients were way beyond what one would expect from the menu description. All said and done, tonight was a perfect reason why mandatory tips included do not work. A server, such as we had tonight, has no reason to go beyond being a fast food take out venue take your order and slap it down on the table. In fact, when she first came to our table and poured water, we had to ask her name, then had to ask if she was our server. Tonight was a perfect example of where one does not have to exert yourself to be rewarded, one will do exactly what we received tonight for service --- could not care less if there were any issues or if you want additional information. If you are looking for great food totally under described on the menu served by servers who couldn't care less about the menu or food, this is the place for you. If you are fine with a 19% tip added to your bill (which, BTW is printed in very fine print on the menu) for very poor service, this is the place for you. If you enjoy great food served by inattentive servers who seem annoyed you are there and cannot wait until you leave, this is the place for you. If you enjoy your server appearing at your table and telling you you the chef needs your order now, this is the place for you. Us, we'll pass. We voiced our concerns after our first visit (as we did tonight), yet the weakest part of this restaurant on our first visit is still the weakest part. Sadly, the food and its presentation is absolutely worth the price and the chefs have developed a great menu; but, until the front of house gets its act together, we'll visit the other fine restaurants in the Clearwater/St Pete area. read more
