I went in for an exam as a new patient. The dentist told me I needed a 'deep cleaning.' He did not do any periodontal probing, and they only took a few x-rays. I later learned this is questionable; it's hard to claim a deep cleaning is needed if there is no evidence of or testing for deep pockets in my gums. My gums are fine; no pain, no bleeding, no odor. I consider this diagnosis suspect. However, I didn't know this at the time so I consented and scheduled the cleaning. I went in for the cleaning a few days later and paid for it. The dental tech polished my teeth, and took a few supplemental x-rays. Then I waited for the doctor. And waited. And waited. I waited 45 MINUTES. There was no sign of the dentist in the office. I told them it was unacceptable to make me wait so long. I rescheduled the cleaning for the next week and I left. The day of that appointment, I went in. They sat me down. Told me I'd get a few x-rays. I told them I'd already had them. Told me they'd polish my teeth. I told them I'd had that done last week. And I waited. And waited. And waited. This time I waited 30 MINUTES. Again, there was no sign of the dentist in the office. I told them this was unacceptable. I told them that I would be leaving, and that I wanted a refund for the cleaning. They seemed to have trouble refunding it to my debit card, so they refunded it to my credit card. I consider this highly unprofessional and disrespectful. When you book an appointment with a doctor or dentist, I don't think it's too much to ask that the doctor or dentist actually BE THERE IN THE OFFICE ON TIME for your appointment. And to have it happen a SECOND time is even worse. If the dentist had a scheduling problem, or some other issue in their life, the office should have notified me, but they did not. I will not be back. Not recommended. read more

Dr John Dang is one of the best dentists I've met as he has that intangible x-factor called HUMANITY and approaches his patients with compassion and care. I started here with Dr Jean Fang and then continued with Dr John Dang. He has a great personality and his support staff are friendly as well. The facilities are clean and bright. Parking can be difficult because, logistically the parking spaces are poorly designed with narrow stripping and small spaces to navigate... not at all to the fault of Ocean View Dental Group of course. read more

I recently had to switch from PPO dental insurance to HMO dental insurance and was a bit bummed because I had to switch dentists and was scared of getting worse treatment. But I was so happy to find out that this facility takes my insurance. The dental hygienist did the x-rays and was very thorough and kind. The dentist did a thorough inspection of my teeth and I was hoping they would be able to do a cleaning the same day, and they fit me in at the end of the day! It worked out great. He had a great bedside manner, gave me a good review on my teeth, some tips for flossing even better, and recommended a small fill for a filling that was cracking a little. Nothing too crazy or wild. I appreciated the whole visit! Sooo much relief to find another dentist I like and can trust. read more

Dr. Dang was my dentist for almost 6 years (until I moved out of town) and is consistently kind, careful, thorough, and does quality work. His last project with me was to beautify an implant that was extremely difficult to get the right shape and color, but he made sure it was absolutely perfect, going above and beyond to work with the lab on creative solutions until they got it just right. My dental insurance is an HMO. The last 2 dentists that I went to insisted that I needed a deep cleaning at a cost of over $600 which my insurance does not cover. When I requested a routine cleaning, they refused. I then had to select a new dentist that would accept my insurance which most don't. I was a little reluctant to go to a new dentist thinking that they would insist on a deep cleaning. My appointment started soon after I arrived. Ex rays and pictures were taken of my mouth so that I could see what it looks like inside. I thought the exam was thorough. The result was that Dr. Dang said that I did not need a deep cleaning. Instead, I had a medium cleaning that cost only $60. It was the best cleaning that I have ever had. I do not feel that the dentist was trying to upcharge me as many dentists do that take dental HMO insurance. I will go back for my next exam in 6 months to see if I only need the regular cleaning which my insurance covers. read more

Several years ago, our family lost our long-time dental group due to a change of insurance. We were sad to have lost that dentist and his group, but optimistic about finding another good dentist for the family. Everyone that works here besides the front desk have always been so friendly and welcoming and make my visit at the dentist so comfortable. I'm one of those people that hate going to the dentist. Unfortunately the front desk has always been so rude to me that I had to give three stars. The initial greeting is so important to me and I believe it really sets the tone to the whole visit, and unfortunately each time I've gone in it's always a rough start because the front desk is so rude and irritable. Our appointments always are on time which is so appreciated when you're a busy, working mom. I also genuinely appreciate that I'm never rushed into any procedure. For example, there was a potential issue with one of my wisdom teeth and instead of making a recommendation for immediate extraction, I was told, "let's watch this and we'll look at it carefully again at your next cleaning." They're always really good at telling me what the charges will be ahead of time and the transparency means a lot. read more

Great dentist, great dental office. I was a little apprehensive after reading previous Yelp posts about pushy sales tactics at Ocean View (although that kind of complaint seems to pop up in reviews of other dental offices, too). Needless to say, there weren't any pushy sales tactics at this dentist. After getting my X-rays done by a very kind dental technician, Dr. John Dang inspected my teeth, pointed out the problem areas (there were a couple, which is why I went to the dentist) and told me which ones he deemed urgent, and which ones can wait for now. Then he performed a very thorough teeth cleaning, repeatedly checking on my comfort/pain level (yes, I am a delicate flower when it comes to dental procedures :). At the end a very professional lady at the front desk respectfully laid out the potential costs (after insurance) for any of the suggested treatments, if I chose to to go ahead with one or all of them (which I am doing). Total thief's here. Insisted I had gingivitis and needed a deep cleaning @ $90. Wouldn't provide a "regular cleaning" unless I paid the $90. The office is dirty and the seating in the waiting room has burn holes in them. Office staff is a bit unpleasant. in the 3 times I've been there I've been seen by 3 different dentists. The first time my teeth cleaning was so half assed I could have used my finger and got cleaner teeth. 0 Stars. I'm never going back. And yes its true the picture on yelp is not the office. Crushed my gums when he was flossing me (sounds sexual) and I floss regularly, never had an experience like that before. I like this dental office a lot! Dr. Hall has a pleasant demeanor, & is very sharp & informative. He makes you actually want to take better care of your teeth at home, between visits! Also, this office is extremely convenient to my home. One of the ladies on the admin. staff is very pleasant & helpful - Stephanie. I just signed my husband up, too, during my fairly new employer's open enrollment in October - I will see that the Delta Dental HMO gets him assigned here, as I am. With my plan, my co-pays are reasonable. I wish the chairs in the waiting area were a little lower & more comfortable, but I usually don't have to wait very long to go in, anyway. This is my first Yelp review (though I've been using Yelp & reading others' reviews for quite a long time). I am so disgusted and annoyed with Manhattan Beach Dentistry, I felt compelled to share... Shady Business Practices Wanted to charge me $650 for a crown that, according to my insurance company, should cost $150. After calling them out on it, having my insurance company call them directly 3 TIMES, AND having my insurance company fax them the current price list, they finally reduced the cost down to $350. The $200 disrepancy was for things that were not covered by my insurance, but come to find out later were TOTALLY UNNECCESSARY for my procedure. That's how these people operate. They tell you that you need X, Y & Z, when in reality you only need X. If you must get work done here, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND asking them exactly what "codes" (i.e. what procedures) they want to charge you for PRIOR TO SIGNING ANYTHING. They will be reluctant to give them to you, but DO NOT PAY THEM UNTIL THEY GIVE YOU THE CODES...they have to. Go home, google those codes and do some research. It's easier than you might think, and you'll probably find out half of them or often associated with "dentist fraud." Dr. Hall drilled my tooth and put a temp cap on in preparation for a permanent crown (to be installed a week later). The next day, I was in tremendous pain but could not come in to see him prior to a 5-day trip I was going on (he convinced me I needed to have the procedure started PRIOR to my trip, which in hindsight was a bad idea). He would not prescribe any pain medication and basically told me to f*&* off. After my trip, I went back in and without taking the temp cap off, told me I needed a root canal and referred me to an endodontist at Manhattan Village Dental. ***MANHATTAN VILLAGE DENTAL IS OWNED BY THE SAME COMPANY AS MANHATTAN BEACH DENTISTRY AND THEY ARE BOTH SHADY**** After experiencing further shady practices at Manhattan Village Dental (same thing as above - wanted to charge me for "codes" that I didn't need done), went to ANOTHER endodontist that I found through my insurance company. This was 3 weeks that went by since my original procedure and I was still in tremendous pain. The new endodontist pulls the cap off, and sees that my tooth had been hemorrhaging for 3 weeks and squirted out blood. Not cool. BOTTOM LINE This practice takes advantage of a system that easy to take advantage of. You have no idea what they are doing to your teeth unless they tell you, and if they tell you something bogus, how are you supposed to know? It took me too long to figure that out at this office, and I regret ever going there. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND STAYING AWAY FROM THEM AT ALL COSTS...GO ANYWHERE ELSE. PS Those pics are DEFINITELY NOT from their office. The office is disgusting and there is absolutely not privacy between any of the chairs. read more

The office is shabby. They have a painting in the office area that has been crooked for years, WHY won't anybody straighten it? I've even pointed it out. The walls are painted pepto bismol pink and the ceiling is stained with leaks. (You'd think they'd fix it considering everyone has to stare up there for hours.) There aren't individual rooms for patients, just 3 chairs in a row seperated by counter space. Not impressed. The receptionist was friendly enough but I'm not happy with the work I had done. I agree that the "cleaning" was extremely half assed, it took no time at all and couldn't have helped anything. Dr. Hall tries to make you feel comfortable and is very good with the numbing but he's certainly not a perfectionist when it comes to the actual procedure. He left some fillings rough and scratchy and a crown I have on a bottom molar ended up cracking a molar on the top because the bite was off. Not to mention, the color of the crown is wayyy whiter than the rest of my teeth, this is super annoying because it stands out in pictures. I'm a relatively long-time patient - came in for my 11:45 appointment - arrived 10 minutes early and I sat there until 12:05pm and when I said how much longer, they then told me that there was an emergency patient - why tell me after waiting for so long - why not contact me before I got there or when I arrived, so I can decide if I want to reschedule or stick around - then when they brought me in to the chair after 12:10, they tell me it will be another 10 minutes - REALLY! sitting in a cold office staring at the walls - I guess my time is not valued. Agree with everyone else here -- I would give it zero stars if I could! Worst dental office I've ever been to in my life, and am desperately looking for a better dentist in the area. As others have said, the office staff (especially the manager) are terrible and rude. And, like others, I've had a scheduled appointment which they for some reason didn't have in their computer, and I had to come back later -- EVEN THOUGH THEY CALLED ME THE WEEK BEFORE TO CONFIRM THE APPOINTMENT TIME! How do you mess simple stuff like that up? They definitely do the upsells on the deep cleaning and periodontal work, too, and have also overcharged me for work my insurance definitely covered. The dentists aren't the greatest either -- the one who does the cleanings pretty much accused me of lying when I told her I floss every day (and I do floss every day). The dentist who does the fillings always seems to leave rough spots.... Overall, the worst dental office I've ever been to. Avoid it like the plague! read more

Believe the bad reviews! I went into Manhattan Beach Dentistry for a teeth cleaning. I made it very clear that the appointment was for a cleaning, but when I get in there, the dentist, Dr. Hall, does not even clean my teeth. He looks at my teeth, tells me what is the situation is with my teeth and gums and then directs me to reception so they can go over "expenses." When I asked Dr. Hall why he had not actually cleaned my teeth, he said that I needed a deep cleaning, so there was no point. Then the lady in charge of billing tells me that the deep cleaning sessions are broke into two parts and each cost $150 (she said $500 without insurance). Basically, I wasted my teeth cleaning appointment on a consultation that pretty much told me that I really needed cleaning... which I already knew because that is what I made the appointment for. I left Manhattan Beach Dentistry, and fifteen minutes later I was getting my teeth cleaned at my family dentist who is not covered by my insurance, so I had to pay out-of-pocket (the charge for the cleaning was still not even close to the $150, let alone $300, that Dr. Hall was charging for his deep cleaning session). In my opinion, it was a small price to pay to know that I was not going to be scammed by some shady dental office in Manhattan Beach. Unless what you want is to become a victim of a scam, I would stay away from this place! There is a reason the ratings are so low! read more

Yes Shaun and Sara, I have to ALSO AGREE with you. THIS OFFICE IS HORRIBLE, A NIGHTMARE.(zero stars) I had been going there a few yrs and finally ended. The manager of the office was so rude when I questioned her about a filling that was overcharged. I am self employed and have a Delta PMI insurance, so the office has a standard price that they can only charge for certain services. When Delta received my grievance complaint, they researched the matter and instructed the office to refund the overcharged amt. The manager and the office is horribly unprofessional dealing with this situation, so I reported them to THE BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU. Ms.Muniz fm BBB told me that the office refuse to response to my complaint. They are now rate "C-" on BBB standards. Dr. Hall is a ok dentist and wonder why he is working there and not having his own practice. FYI, the dental hygenist there are inexperience, I once had to get them to stop the cleaning as the hygenist was hurting my teeth with the instruments. read more

Absolute crook. All of these 1 star reviews tell a true story - Totally unethical business practices. Larry Hall takes advantage of senior citizen trust and naivete and makes big bank doing it. I watched a situation for a year and was absolutely blown away at how he sells and installs a new bridge - $5,000? - when visible to the eye is more decay that will need serious work within a year. He then, within a year, sold the person ANOTHER bridge when he took care of the work that should have been taken care of the last time. Even the oral surgeon was appalled at what he saw. Oh - and he makes these old people pay up front. I sat in the waiting room and they left the door to the rear open, what I heard and witnessed from other staff was a total demonstration of the 'trickle down theory'. When I first started coming here, I was seeing Dr. Hall. He retired, so I started seeing Dr. Fang. I must say, I have been very happy seeing Dr. Fang. My two daughters and I love being treated by her. The one con is that she only works at this office on Wednesdays. With that said, when I found out that my insurance wasn't being accepted anymore, I made it a point to switch out of the insurance because I didn't want to have to find a new dentist! read more

I was a patient of Dr. Hall for many years and was always very happy with the service Dr Hall and his staff provided. I was nervous about seeing Dr Dang because I'm always embarrassed about the condition of my teeth and have a hard time in general with any procedures. I must say that Dr Dang is now my favorite dentist ever. He's very compassionate, professional, caring and he makes me laugh. Thats hard to do when I'm in a dentists chair. I want to thank Dr. Dang and the entire staff for making this last month tolerable. I had to have a lot of work done and they have all been amazing. I agree! I've had 2 cavities my entire life and Dr. Hall told me I had 8!!!! I left him fill 4, then got a second opinion on the others as the first 4 were "a rush." I went back to my hometown dentist where he couldn't find one out of four. I brought the report and findings back to Dr. Hall and he agreed to refund me half my money. Now I have 4 filled teeth that never even needed filling. Terrible! read more

I was assigned to Manhattan Beach Dentistry through my HMO insurance. I read the reviews before going in for my cleaning appointment this morning, and was pretty scared. However, my experience was perfectly pleasant and unlike the negative Yelp reviews. Both times I spoke with the receptionist on the phone, she was helpful and kind. The front office staff was friendly when I went in this morning, and the office was clean. The equipment looks nice and relatively new, and I didn't see any stains on the ceiling. Dr. Larry Hall was very friendly and is clearly passionate about his practice. He enthusiastically walked me through the various things I can do to improve the health of my teeth (all over the counter stuff, he wasn't trying to sell me a dental procedure). He spent a lot of time with me and was gentle with my teeth. My visit cost $0, and I scheduled an appointment to come back in for three fillings ($25, $20 and $20). This all seems incredibly reasonable to me, and I am at a loss as to why so many people have bad things to say about this office. Perhaps there has been a turnover of staff and an office renovation since the last reviews. I will update this review if my impression changes after receiving my fillings. read more
