I love Ocean World! This restaurant is owned by the same people who run Sakura on Keystone, but this has more western style seafood menu items besides standard sushi fare. This place can get really busy on the weekends with both takeout and dine-in, so be prepared to wait if you ordered a bunch of sushi items. The staff is friendly, attentive, and they will definitely let you know if the food will take a little while. The soft shell crab roll is so good! If you've never tried it, but like curly fries from Arby's I can guarantee you'll like it. (That is a super abstract comparison, I know, but you'll see what I mean.) Bob's roll and the Indy roll are also stellar. I also love the futomaki, but it is HUGE. You might need two bites for each slice. The sushi menu is vast, with many veggie only and all cooked filling items for the person who doesn't want to go for raw fish. And if you don't like sushi, don't worry! But to say (only) California has good sushi is like saying California isn't responsible for the real estate market collapse. I mean come on, California Rolls? LMAO, that's not sushi, its barely seafood. True, Indy isn't the Mecca of sushi, and all of our fish here is previously frozen, but we have to expect that living in the corn belt. The sushi here is well prepared and inexpensive. The portions are generous and the service is very good. I have enjoyed the two times I have been here and will return. The rice was perfectly cooked and had a great flavor, that alone is a plus. We haven't tried their specialty rolls but the regular sushi and nigiri is well worth the trip here. We're back to a four!!! Service was really good tonight. As always, the wasabi scallops were incredible. I'm now loving the sweet raw shrimp...it comes with the fried shrimp heads. I love Ocean World. They are owned by the same people that run Sakura on Keystone, which is another great place to eat. The wait staff are are really friendly and remember things about you, like your name, people you come with, the appetizers and drinks you like to order. Even if you aren't someone that shows up every week, they make you feel like a regular, which is wonderful. I have only eaten the bento boxes and sushi, so I can't say much about the rest of the menu, but I have enjoyed everything. Some of the larger rolls are impossible to eat in one bite, but they aren't things I like to order all that often. This restaurant definitely caters to Western style sushi, so there is a lot of smoked salmon, tempura, cream cheese, and hot sauce, but they make good tamago yaki, so I am happy. I suppose my only complaint is sometimes it can take a long time to get your order on a busy night if it's entirely sushi, but the staff stops by to let you know about how long you have to wait until the food arrives. On a night like that, the sushi tends to be a little sloppy and the rice might be a little dry, but that's just me being picky. read more

When I think of Japanese food though, I go for noodle soup and Ocean World does not disappoint there either. The spicy soba soup was ridiculously good. Finally got to try this place even though I have lived close by for a while. Not the best sushi I've ever had but certainly not the worst. They have a great dinner special until 630pm where you can get 2 sushi rolls for $10. In terms of the amount they give you for this price, it's a steal. My only issue is that I ordered 2 glasses of wine and they charged more for the wine than what was listed. when I brought it to their attention the manager voided my payment and gave me a new bill which he swiped my card. This was my first experience at Ocean World. I went for lunch and was very much pleased. I had a lunch box with teriyaki chicken, tempura and steamed rice. The chicken was tender and flavorful. The tempura had a nice crunch with the tempura veggies par boiled underneath the crunchy batter. Along with the lunch I chose the miso soup. It too was flavorful. The service was exceptional; one of the chefs came and asked how I experienced my dish. He politely bowed in the Japanese fashion and smiled as I explained how I enjoyed the meal. This was a great find in the middle of 86th Street! I'm from the East Coast, so the upper level of sushi fish quality might have been lacking, but for what they had to offer, I was supremely impressed. We went for lunch, and their combos (bento boxes and the like) were both a huge value and very filling. I had a teriyaki tilapia with sushi box, and it was a lot of food. Soup, salad, four pieces of California roll, three pieces of nigiri (salmon, tuna, shrimp), a bowl-sized portion of rice, and a healthy piece of tilapia. About the fish... it was perfectly cooked! Still moist on the inside, with a light breading that didn't absorb a lot of grease. The sauce was not your standard bottled thick offering, but a house-made thin but finger-licking good version. The flavors were spot on, and the cooking technique was on point. If I'm ever back in this neck of the woods and have a sushi craving, I know where I'm going. Very good selection poised towards sushi and sashimi, with noodle possibilities, bento boxes, and large entres, like snow crab. I had the snow crab, and it was delish. Yeah, it's hard to screw up. I had Japanese-style seaweed salad, as well. Not too bad, although they put cucumber pieces in it, which of course, isn't seaweed salad, but it does seem to bulk up the perceived portion size. I had an early dinner here with a friend on a Sunday night before heading to a movie; we arrived at about 5:15 and were surprised to find the restaurant packed since the website said they opened at 5PM. Apparently, they now open at 2:30. We did still get a table without any trouble though. The menu features a long list of sushi rolls which are described as "best rolls in Indy". Well, maybe...if you don't like fish...There are only a couple that feature fresh fish as an ingredient. Most have either "crab aka 'krab' stick" as the main ingredient, fried shellfish and/or fried vegetables along with "tempura bits" which, based on the description from our server, are bits of fried tempura batter. I probably should have just stuck with the edamame appetizer, which was just as tasty as they serve anywhere, and then ordered some sashimi. For some reason, I was in the mood for rolls, and decided to plunge ahead, selecting two that had the fewest fried ingredients and no imitation krab. The funny thing is, that one of the few without fried ingredients is called the Hoosier roll . It is a basic tuna and avocado roll with "spicy sauce". Well, the spicy sauce unfortunately reminded me of something that would go on a southwestern chicken sandwich. It was a creamy, not very spicy addition that didn't entirely seem to fit. The Bob roll came with the same sauce along with smoked salmon and fried asparagus. The rolls are bigger than those at other sushi places in town due to what seemed to be a much thicker layer of rice. Two rolls left me quite full. The food wasn't bad, but there are far better sushi places in town. In fairness, the prices are also lower, so I guess that is to be expected. This would definitely be a good non-threatening place to bring someone who has never tried sushi, but if you are already a sushi fan, you might want to try something other than the rolls. If I do make it back here I will likely give the sashimi a try. read more

My boyfriend and I got the gyoza as a starter and then got the tempura udon, King Salmon Roll, and Jewelry Roll. For $55, the amount of food we had was plentiful and filling! The gyoza was very tasty as well as the udon but I was expecting more from the Jewelry roll. It was more avocado and rice than seafood (crab, eel). However, the King Salmon roll was very fresh-tasting and overall delicious! It can get pretty pricey but the rolls are a good size and very filling! The reviews for this restaurant here are not low, but they are a bit anemic, and that surprises me. I lived in Japan for eight years and know my sushi. Ocean World is not a traditional Japanese sushi bar with a focus on the nigiri (rice with fish slices on top). Rather, it's more American with a focus on the rolls. But that's not the end of the story, since OW is a very nice general Japanese restaurant with good tempura, karaage, agedashi-doufu, and some other things that are more like izakaya (Japanese pub) food. The prices are also extremely reasonable. But that's still not the end of the story, since, in my view, every restaurant should do something that's truly excellent. You'll find many raves about the soft shell crab roll here on Yelp, and it is truly DA BOMB. For just $8.95 ($8.00 during happy hour), you get a big roll that is already stuffed with soft shell, but then on top of that is what appears to be a whole crab's worth of delicious, chopped-up, deep-fried, mayonnaise-y meat. It's not only the cheapest soft shell crab roll I've found in town, it's also the biggest and tastiest. Their other rolls are good too, and eel is an ingredient they do well. So no, this is not a super high-end sushi joint. But it does offer really good and scrumptious chow at a good price. So go there and get the crab! read more

Service was horrible. Ordered online at 4:50 PM, to pick up at 5:45 PM. Got there at 5:45 PM, had to wait out in the cold for 20 min due to social distancing. Finally my turn, and at 6:05 they tell me they HAVEN'T EVEN PUT MY ORDER IN YET. No apologies, very rudely said only "we're very busy". No one called me, no one sent me an e-mail to tell me my order was delayed. One guy who was leaving told me he ordered online at 4 PM, and he got an e-mail telling him his order was delayed. Bottom line: Best sushi I've had in Indianapolis. Once you make it past the cheesy "ocean themed" decor, you'll find that Ocean World serves high-quality sushi. I recommend the soft-shell crab roll which in addition to a good helping of spicy crab inside the roll also comes with a glorious mound of goodness on top of the 6 pieces. Another favorite is the asparagus tempora roll. There is a little spicy sauce inside that has a great flavor to go with the crunchy asparagus texture. The edamame are perfectly prepared and salted. The miso is quite good. If you order enough sushi, they throw in either soup or salad. The dressing on the salad is a ginger vinegrette, which is good but the lettuce mix leaves something to be desired. I go for the miso soup which is quite good. read more
