Another place to add to my list of Take-Out during Covid. I believe this is my 6th time order taking within 2021-22. This was the day after New Years and I was craving sushi and my favorite sushi place is too far for takeout (and they are always too busy anyways). Ocean World is close to home and their sushi trays never disappoint. They are always so consistent with their food! The trays always look the same (we even ordered two one time and they look very identical) which I like because I know I can trust my next order to be as great. I love the variety if nigiri they give you and you can choose between three sushi rolls (or four - the fourth one has an extra charge) to order with the 22 pieces of nigiri. We almost always order the soft shell crab o2 roll because we like to have a balance of cooker and raw fish. As a side, you can choose between miso soup or side salad (they give you two so you can choose two misos or two salads or one of each). I'm leaving out one star because of their pick up process wasn't a fun experience. Every time I go to pick up, there's no one at the front. The last time I went, several of the waitresses made eye contact with me, but they found other things to be 'busy' and I'm sure it's because there's a hostess who takes care of incoming customers and pick up orders, but it would've been nice to know that if someone was coming up to the front. It looks like there us one hostess who sits people, but also us responsible for bring all the takeout orders out to the front so when there's multiple takeouts at one time, they wait to fill their cart and then come to the front. I waited 15mins until someone finally acknowledged me (and that was because there was a group coming in for dine in). read more

I will start by saying that I am by no means a sushi connoisseur. This was our first time to Ocean world on a recommendation from a friend, and we definitely want to go back and explore some other options! We ordered the Canadian roll, king of salmon roll, Florida roll, Mardi Gras roll, Louisiana roll, and soft shell crab roll. My favorites were the Canadian, king of salmon, soft shell crab, and Louisiana rolls. The Mardi Gras roll was good but I did not care for the pickled vegetables on top. Some of the fried rolls were a little heavy on the deep fried portions but overall were packed with flavor. We really did enjoy most all we had from Ocean World and plan to go back and explore even more variety. The sushi was definitely fresh and the environment was a nice ocean type theme. read more

Tried this sushi spot for the first time and was overall very pleased! We had to wait no more than 5 minutes for a table. I loved the atmosphere and overall was Covid friendly spacing. Service was a little slow as our waiter was covering many tables, but not bad by any means. We ordered 6 sushi rolls for 2 of us which was probably 1 too many. The star of the rolls was the Canadian roll. Talk about spectacular! My husband and I both enjoyed the Louisiana roll and the soft shell crab roll. My husband is a big salmon fan and he loved the king of salmon roll. We didn't love the Mardi Gras roll, mainly due to the picked veggies on top. The box lunch is my favorite take out lunch, and it is very reasonably priced. For $9, I get salad with their delicious ginger carrot dressing, salmon terriyaki and a fresh california roll, plus all the stuff you need to eat those things, including a few slivers of fresh ginger. This has been my family's go to sushi spot for over 15 years. We are frequents at ocean world as I think the whole west side of Carmel is. They have plenty of options and they don't skimp on their portions. The start of the show this time around was the Las Vegas and bobs roll. Must try's are the dynamite appetizer and soft shell crab roll. Can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Only reason I didn't give a five is because menu has been the same for awhile. I want to love Ocean World, but the problem is that they are not consistent. Doesn't hold a candle to Sakura even though the O.W. head sushi chef started there, and he's a gem. I suspect that the difference-maker is which one of the sushi chef prepares the order. Be cautious about carryout-- they notoriously take longer than they tell you, which is annoying. Female behind the counter is first class, but can't say that for the male manager who rarely smiles or expresses any sincere appreciation. I'd send him back to finishing school. Bottom line for Ocean World is that their sushi is decent, but you can find (much) better. read more

It has been quite some time since I've been to Ocean World for lunch, but last week when I met a dear friend from my high school and college days, Ocean World was almost equal distance from our offices, and we both are a fan. I ordered one of the lunch boxes with a california roll and salmon, which came with a side of steamed rice, salad and miso soup. There was more food there than I could eat, and it was less than $10. So glad this gem is nonchalantly located in a small strip mall so it can remain a local secret, because once you taste food this good you can't NOT come back, and I can't have this place becoming popular enough to have a wait! I had a teacher once who said he'd been to every sushi spot in Indianapolis and said that in terms of taste, Ocean World beat them all. I have been to many sushi spots around the US since graduating and still could not agree more with his assessment. But beyond the sushi quality, what puts this at a 5/5 for me is the staff. When I was a youth and going through a sushi making phase, I would always watch sushi chefs make sushi an try to mimic the craft. On my 13th birthday, we came to ocean world and I was watching the chefs make sushi at the bar as I did when able. One of the chefs noticed me and we struck up a conversation. The chef let me around back to design and make my own sushi roll under his advisement. It was a really cool moment for me. I've been to Ocean World for almost every birthday ever since. They updated their restaurant a bit and it definitely looks more fancy now with the paper table cloth and clear salad bowl. Ordered their $8.95 lunch box special, which is also new. Ocean World makes some great sushi, hands down. This time was no exception. My friend and I came her to celebrate an event and each got a roll (Canadian and Futomaki) with edamame as an appetizer. We also ordered a bottle of plum wine; of course, because we were celebrating! Everything was delicious, the only caveat was that we were charged $5 more for the plum wine (menu price $24, we were charged $29.95). Another minor issue: the place closes at 9p through the week, which we knew but about 845p staff began to leave. Even though we were having a good time talking and catching up, it was very obvious that we needed to leave at 9p as the greeter was the only other person there. The food is usually good but lately it has been sub-par with only the service being worse. The sushi was warm instead of cold and the tempuras were ice cold when they were supposed to be warm. My friend brought me here for lunch saying how it was a little more upscale than the last Asian lunch spot we visited. Even though this is in a small strip mall, the entryway has 2 doors so the cold outdoor wind doesn't blow into the dining area. The host was smartly dressed in a tie and promptly escorted us through the dining area to a set of tables towards the back giving us our choice. The dining area is nice and tables are separated a bit so it doesn't seem like your sitting next to another group. Pleasant and relaxing come to mind as I remember my experience here. We started off with hot saki while we perused the menu. Several types of lunch specials are offered up and We both had a hard time deciding what to get, the saki somehow helped with this. After much debate I finally decided on the Sara udon and my friend got one of the lunch boxes. The food came out fairly quick and we were both very happy with our choices. Nice authentic Japanese restaurant in Indy! The Japanese curry rice was delicious and the portion was huge! We also ordered the wasabi crunchy lobster and Godzilla roll for sushi. They taste wonderful as well but the lobster they had in the roll was so little that we could barely taste any lobster in it. This restaurant has withstood the changing of 86th street over the years. It is consistently good and aims to provide you with excellent service. We had a party of 11 and the service was stellar. Our waitress new the menu and could answer any questions that we had. Most of the group ordered bento boxes as it includes the most variety with the added bonus of ice cream (green tea or vanilla). The toddler of the group was being more fussy than usual. The waitress was extra attentive and brought us a variety of things to keep him happy. Even the sushi chef got involved and gave him a lollipop while he was being carried as we stood watching them. It was a great experience and we look forward to the next time. read more

And we were not disappointed beside one item. Sushi and sashimi were Great! Portions were good and sushi was sliced properly and rice was also proper size for sushi. Sashimi was also good! Our server was a friendly older lady that made the experience even more pleasant. The only complain I have is the portion size for the calamari/seafood salad. It's was very small maybe 1/4 cup of salad for $6. Which is way too expensive. For $6 I would expect bigger portions of salad. Especially when you can by a big bowl at Chipotle for that price. We love Ocean World. We brought our niece for her first sushi dinner. Let's just say she's not a fan of raw fish. That said, a little fried chicken... and all good. We love sushi here and we always sit at the bar. Having lived in Japan for 2.5 years we love sitting there and engaging with the sushi chefs. It's always good to ask a sushi chef what's fresh. They know as they've been handling the fish all day. We always get a Bob's Roll. I am a sucker for tempuraed asparagus, put it in a roll with some fish and cream cheese. So good. First off, you need to understand that for me to leave a negative review on Yelp, I need to be pretty irritated. So, here's what happened. It's Mother's Day. It's a busy restaurant day, I completely get that. We placed an order online for carry out at 5:30 PM. I received an email saying the order would be ready to pick up at 7:11. Ok, it's Mother's Day. It's busy. I get that. My husband is just now finally on his way home with our carry out order at 9:05. That's right, around two hours after he arrived to pick it up and 3 1/2 since the order was placed. He watched table after table come in, get seated without a reservation, eat, pay and leave and our order was still missing. Along with others, who were also waiting. He tried talking to someone working there and was told that only the hostess could help him. He was going to cancel the order to, honestly, help them out a bit. The hostess would show up for a blink and then disappear, he couldn't catch her. Finally, our order was brought out. At this point, they apologized profusely, but at no point was a refund (this was all prepaid online) or compensation for time offered. He sat there waiting/trying to talk to someone for two hours. Things happen, I get that. I've worked in restaurants. It really stinks on a bad night, and I know people are short staffed right now. But given that my husband watched many others come in, sit down for dinner, and completely finish a meal and leave before our carry out order (that was placed hours before) was ready, means something wasn't handled well. My suggestion to the restaurant is, if you are super busy, completely in the weeds, or swamped in the kitchen, turn off the online ordering option for a while so you can catch up. Other restaurants do this. I think it would have helped you out a lot this evening. read more

The sushi is ok. Very similar to its sister restaurant Sakura. The biggest problem I have run into in this place is the wait. Not just for a table, but just the service in general. I understand sushi takes a while to make, however it is a freakish long time to wait on food. Additionally it is extremely long wait when picking up takeout. If they've quoted you 25 minutes add an additional 20. Because you're going to be sitting in the restaurant waiting for your order to be done. The food is fine, would not go out of my way to eat here. There are other better sushi restaurants in town including Sakura. read more

From the sweet and soothing squid salad to the generously portioned and fresh sushi- the restaurant is a breath of fresh air in this land locked city. The service was friendly and quick to accommodate our needs. After a miscommunication over a dish we ordered, our waitress was so swift in returning with the right dish that the mistake was not even an issue. We will always love coming to Ocean World! read more
