It's our anniversary (a significant one) and we decided to dine at a restaurant which would remind us of where we were living when we first were married (south Florida). That is at least as far as the food is concerned. Hence we opted for seafood. After recalling six years or so ago when relatives who were visiting from back east wanted seafood and chose to go to Oceano, we decided to go there tonight. We arrived earlier than our reservation as the weather report was calling for severe storms which we wanted to avoid if possible and yet we were seated right away. We chose to be seated on the patio which was cozy and fun. I should also mention that the older we've become the more cognizant we attempt to be in making healthier food choices. Ed our waiter, was knowledgeable regarding the restaurant's food, preparation, and even portions sizes. Attentive and accommodating, Ed provided information and service beyond reproach. We started with a dozen oysters (Blue Points and Blackberries- from Nova Scotia) which were on the small side but oh so delicious. I must mention the roll and harissa in oil dipping sauce. Okay, so it's not the healthiest but omg it was definitely worth every weight watcher associated point. We chose tuna for our entrees and yes they were spot on, too. Ed surprised us with a decadent mango sorbet to finish our memorable meal. Surprisingly, when I went to express our pleasure in dining to the manager, he told us that Ed has been with Oceano since the beginning. We will definitely be returning. read more

NOT 5 star. The trout was over cooked and the scallops under cooked (definitely not worth $50). Caesar fishy and house salad dry. My husband asked if they did anything for birthdays. She said oh yes and brought us a dried up flourless chocolate cake which we couldn't eat and then charged us for it. At least let us choose a dessert of choice if your going to charge. You can stick the complimentary candle on any plate. The drinks, oysters, bread and potato cake were all good along with the service. Although, not enough to justify the cost. There are much better restaurants around that are less expensive. We would probably not go back. read more

Dinner at Oceano was amazing. We were accommodated as requested with outdoor seating since we had our dog with us. Our server, John, was top notch. He even brought a bowl of water for our dog first before anything else, which we definitely appreciated! Food was amazing. And they even made a special burger for our dog! We love going to Oceano for all of our date nights and random happy hours. I almost always get the scallops. I now find myself comparing other seafood dishes to those at Oceano and have not had one better anywhere else. Great service and wine selection too! read more

This is our go to place. Consistently good food. Great service and lovely indoor patio. You can also dine outside.

We checked this place out for Clayton Restaurant Week, so they may have been way busier than normal on a Saturday. We had an 8:00 reservation and it was slammed; it took 45 minutes for us to get seated with the reservation. They weren't able to predict when we would get seated and they frankly weren't very nice about it. Kind of disappointing, even during CRW. We sat at the bar while we waited and the bartender was great. My friend had an awesome cucumber martini - can definitely recommend that. For an appetizer, I had the crab cake and it was delicious. Lots of crab and very little filler. Good portion size and flavorful. The time between courses was ridiculous as well. The manager came over after about another 40 minutes to explain they had run out of mashed potatoes and that's why it was taking so long. Once the filet came, it was perfectly cooked and delicious. The potatoes were good, but not an hour and a half waiting for them good. The bread pudding was great for dessert. All in all, the food was yummy but the service was totally off. Hopefully it was just a super busy night for them and this isn't the norm. read more

Came for my birthday tonight and unimpressed. Cocktails were great! Then waited an hour and a half for our entrees after the waitress accidentally placed the wrong order. Definitely just miss-communication which is unfortunate considering it was a Monday and an expensive meal. Then we got offered chocolate chip cookies for an apology and were told when we were walking out "come back again we'll get you a better server". Although I'm sure it was just meant to be a joke when you get dressed up to go out for a special celebration it's just disappointing. read more

First I want to say the hostesses were wonderful, one of them sat us. We were greeted by Brandon our waiter. We started off with the appetizers which consisted of calamari, and the crabcake, which was told to us was the most popular item on the menu. We also received complementary bread with some type of olive oil, and a swirl of we thought was possibly French dressing. Promptly we were bought out the appetizers which the calamari was overcooked and tasted burnt with an old oil. Then we received also the crabcakes which were cold the plate was hot but the crabcake was cold. I suppose the gentleman that came to ask us about the crab cake was was the general manager we talk about the crabcakes he took that back to the kitchen he returned back a few minutes later with the crabcakes, which were still under cooked and tasteless. We received our meals which was consistent as some type of risotto that was like mush, and on top of that was my halibut, which was awful. My significant other got the seafood Sofrito, which also consisted of the same risotto, and the seafood was rubbery. No flavor. One of the waitresses came by and asked if we'd like to take the meal home with us no thank you I just wanted the check. However, Brandon was amazing. He told us about his inspiring musical ventures and asked if we've listen to it and actually he's pretty good. I told him good luck with all of his endeavors, even working at the restaurant. The restaurant looks like an old cafeteria in the inside, with a lot of elderly people. It needs quite a bit of updating to its decor. I do not recommend this place to anyone. read more

Came for clayton restaurant week. The bread was pretty good served with a very mild olive oil and red pepper reduction mixed instead of balsamic. Crab cakes are pretty good but not too crispy. Nice flavorful hearty crab. Seafood chowder is hearty with good amount of crab on top. Slightly bland could use some cajun seasoning. The shrimp primavera was amazing! The blackened seasoning was spot on. Probably the freshest and best shrimp anywhere in the Midwest. Mushroom ravioli was good too. Lots of scallops and crab on the sauce and a bourbon flavor in the sauce. Very unique. Cupcake was a mixed review. It was very dry and crumbly but the icing and raspberry coulis were tasty and for me made up for the dryness. They could have done better. They were nice enough to replace it with something else. read more

One main dish food order was never received. When asked waiter for service he rolled eyes with his response and had an attitude. Threw bill on the table without saying a word. I could get over going to a seafood restaurant that waits 30 min to greet you at the table than another 20 minutes to take your order to tell you they are virtually out of almost all seafood except for shrimp. As I've said before, they have valet parking so no need to find street or garage parking. We came here for dinner on a Sunday night because we were pretty sure that we could get a seat at the bar. We were right. We ordered drinks and looked over the menu. Bread with an olive oil and red pepper sauce were delivered and it was the best thing to dip your bread in that we have ever had. Red pepper sauce makes a difference. Our appetizers consisted of the pan roasted prawns for him and the carpaccio for me. His prawns were (in a Trump voice) yuge and they were served with a broth and another yuge piece of bread. He said it was very good. My carpaccio was delicious and was a large portion. Since his prawns filled him up (along with the bread dipped in red pepper sauce), he decided to order the soup of the day - butternut squash. I went with the shellfish soffritto. This has types of shellfish in it along with a risotto cake. He loved his soup. I was a little less enamored of my soffritto. The broth was excellent as were the shellfish except for the shrimp. I thought that they could be cooked a little more, the ends looked opaque and rubbery. And the manager came over to clear my plate, he asked me if everything was okay. I lied. I know I should send it back but then my dining partner has to wait for my dish to be returned to me and to be eaten. Would I come back here? Our server Edward completely made our first dinner experience here perfect! I think I walked away saying he had to have been one of - if not THE - best restaurant server I have ever had. What a pleasant tone and cadence to his voice - just makes you feel at home. After making reservations, we arrived and were seated in the restaurant near the windows as per our request. We didn't realize the happy hour specials were only valid in the bar area, but I think Edward sympathized with us and/or could tell we were newbies to Oceano, so he talked to manager Brady and got approved to allow us happy hour specials this time. Oceano Bistro is one of those spots in Clayton that you sort of forget about until you drive right by it... That's not necessarily a bad thing, but since it hasn't been in Clayton as long as some of the other staples in the area (i.e., Cardwell's, BARcelona, Remy's). But I guess it has been on the corner of Brentwood and Maryland for awhile now, huh? Shows you how much I hang out in Clayton these days :) I came here a few years ago for a girl's dinner and the food was good. We shared a handful of small plates and drank a significant amount of wine. From what I remember the service was exceptional and the food was hit or miss. Generally speaking, I don't seek out seafood in the Midwest - once you've had the super fresh stuff from Hawaii, it's hard to go back. But I did meet up with two friends for a late-night drink last week and was glad that we met here. Again, the servers here go above and beyond the normal call of duty. The bartender even let us hang out once everyone else had left. The bar itself is very pretty - perfect for catching up with friends or a post dinner drink. The service was good. Our waiter was good and attentive. Unfortunately the food was bad. Everything was bland. The bread was ok but the oil with orange stuff was not good. Butter was better. Our appetizer crab cakes were cold so we were given another one which was hot but bland and mushy. Our appetizer calamari was burnt. They tasted like they were fried in old oil. Our entrées were just as bad. My date had the pistachio crusted halibut over risotto. The halibut was barely crusted and served over a pile of bland mush risotto with a piece of broccoli. My shellfish soffrito was a soupy mess of broth with peppers, onions, garlic; with bland shrimp, barely grown mussels (half of them were empty), and one bland under cooked scallop. All this poured and piled over a bland pile of semi crunchy and mushy risotto cake. This was the worse meal I have had in St. Louis, maybe my entire life. The restaurant appeared clean but dated. My friend and I started with crab cake - looks like a chopped crab ball mixed with lotus root, which was good but not so amazing. Then came the oyster, which was fantastic, especially with chili cocktail sauce and cucumber mignonette. Since I can't stand Gorgonzola, we ordered spinach salad with mango vinaigrette. I really loved the potato straws inside. BTW, the size was big enough for starter. At last, I enjoyed the best cuisine for that night, the fennel dusted scallop, better than I ever had. In addition, I was extremely surprised since I sent my meal back, no manager checked to see what was wrong. I had the Oceano turkey club I could have made at home myself - cold hash browns. It took forever to receive our complimentary cinnamon roll - after 20 mins I asked our server - Right at our table a server accidentally dropped eggs - grabbed a broom and gave it to the host standing around - which upset her - she swept up the eggs angered- stormed off to find the server and yelled at him "don't ever fucken speak to me that way again". She stormed off and came up to the manager who had on a button up shirt. In front of the restaurant by the chefs I heard "fuck,shit,piece of shit" "if he does that again I'm leaving". Manager just stood there got a wet rag and cleaned up the spilled eggs himself. I never said anything to our server but she knew our service was bad she gave us two complimentary mimosa's. We had a very poor experience for brunch this morning, Mothers' Day. After being the first to be seated when the restaurant opened we waited for about 15 minutes for coffee, while others around us were beginning to be served their breakfasts. When my coffee finally arrived, the warmed milk I requested turned out to be melted butter. By the time I got the correct milk, my coffee was cold and we had to start all over again. We were not served water until we requested it, about a half hour into our visit. My son and I ordered French toast. It was not edible. It appeared to be soaked in oil and fried...no batter and no sign of the caramel syrup described on the menu. It was truly like eating Wesson oil-soaked bread. My husband ordered eggs benedict which, he said, were just fair. He couldn't detect any hollandaise sauce and the hash browns appeared to come from a package. We told our waitress we couldn't eat the French toast and she offered to get us something else. She said the kitchen had "some leftover batter" and they could make pancakes for us. Meanwhile my husband finished his breakfast alone. Our waitress became over-attentive and solicitous to the point of insincerity. The owner hovered around several tables near us, but despite seeing unusual activity at ours, made no effort to talk to us. We considered complaining to the owner or manager, but felt it was not appropriate during a busy Mother's' Day brunch. So we decide to call the restaurant that afternoon to give them a heads up about the service and food. When we called we were told the owner had left for the day (it was 1:30pm on Mother's' Day) and that the general manager was tied up but would call back shortly. It is now 8 hours later and we have not received a call. read more

Oceano was busy, busy, busy on the Saturday night of Clayton Restaurant Week. The hubby and I dined here and we ate very well. We split two dozen oysters (half were Blue Point ones while the other half were the chef's choice). Fresh and delicious. I do have to note that the bread that they serve is really good too. The only low point of the meal was the calamari that the hubby ordered from his Restaurant Week menu- some of the batter wasn't on the squid and didn't have the right taste texture. That aside my lobster tails were amazing! Meaty and succulent. For dessert, I decided to go all out with my meal and order the chocolate lava cake since I had a disappointing dessert experience at another restaurant and Oceano did well. Chocolate perfection. Overall a very good dining experience. Food was VERY good. Parking can be difficult in that area. The only thing I didn't like was the seating confusion they had.
