I had a business lunch meeting at Oceano today. It was the ideal place for a lunch meeting. The atmosphere was clean and professional. I had the special of the day, steak sandwich, and it was ridiculous. Best steak sandwich. I had been here once before today and had their salmon salad. Also really good. Oceano is a great addition to the St. Louis restaurant scene. It is a year old, and in that year i was there about 6 times. They have certainly adapted and improved. Their bread is baked fresh. At the beginning it used to be quite oily, but now the diner controls the oil. Last night we had a great experience, again. This begins to be our favorite restaurant. The calamari were fabulous and the halibut, great. The pork chop (16 oz.) was delicious. The owner is friendly and cares for each customer. It is a nice touch. The decor is modern and pleasant. I was pleasantly surprised with what Oceano had to offer. Sure, the food wasn't perfect, but I think it was one of the best meals I've had since I arrived in St. Louis. The only issue I had was that there was a very strong aftertaste with the scallops...yes, I know that it's due to the wood that they use in the cooking process, but I think it ruins what are some otherwise great scallops (texture was perfect!). I dined here last night for Clayton Restaurant Week for the first time. Really cozy ambiance in the main dining room. The service was good but a bit dry (which tends to happen at higher-end restaurants) and the food was great. I ordered the Arancini for my appetizer and the Beef Medallions for my entree. Both were delicious. Portions for the dessert were tiny for Restaurant Week, however. I ordered the bread pudding and it was incredible, just small. Service here was HORRIBLE and food was not worth eating. Definitely never coming back. Our waiter took ages to take our order and bring our drinks. We had to ask multiple times for drink refills and our waiter took a long time to bring them out. He seemed more interested in clearing the dishes off our table (even before we were done with them) and getting us out of there than checking to see if we wanted more drinks, bread, water, etc. Our food took over an hour to come out and one of the dishes was incorrect. Instead of apologizing for messing up the order and bringing the wrong entree, they apologized for the "confusion" and did nothing to remedy the error. Because we had after dinner plans we were already running late for due to the slow and abysmal service, we didn't insist on getting the correct dish because we didn't have another hour to wait around for them to make the food we actually ordered. Any other restaurant would have comped that dish but instead Oceano made us pay for a $30 entree we did not order and did not want. Absolutely unacceptable. The food was also terrible - the clam chowder was far too thick, greasy and cold; the salmon was incredibly bland and had zero flavor; and the vegetables were drowning in oil and were inedible. The drinks were awful and not well made. Overall it was a waste of money and totally disappointing from the service to the food. I will never be back and will advise all my friends in the area not to go here. read more

I've been here 4 times or so. Great food and great service each time. It's usually busy with a lively crowd of both older and younger folks. The scallops are wonderful, and if you don't do seafood or aren't in the mood, their chicken entree is really great too. The side dishes are amazing as well. Not too dressy, not too casual. Just had dinner here last Thursday, and it was wonderful as always. They always accommodate my request to sit at the window. I also love to bring my kids as the kids menu coloring sheet (crayons included) is great-my kids love the Kobe beef sliders. We brought my mother in law who has a severe MSG allergy, and I am pleased to say that none of their entrees have MSG. We loved the rainbow trout and lobster risotto. Some of the other reviews said it didn't have enough lobster, but ours had two claws plus tail meat-each bite shared amongst the table had lobster in it! Our favorite part were the huge chocolate chip cookies with ice cream for dessert. The phyllo wrapped brownie was also divine!! Great place to take visiting family-service is always excellent and very reasonably priced when you have a large group to feed. Highly recommend eating here!! read more

3rd time here and another great visit. Sat at the bar during happy hour. Service was excellent and the bartender was very attentive. I got the grilled salmon and the vegetable appetizer which was on happy hour. Both were excellent. They have good happy hour specials. Half wit wheat beers were $2 and half priced select appetizers. They also have some other beer, wine and liquor specials too. Street parking is free after 5, but sometimes hard to come by. read more

I had one of the best meals I have ever had in my life: Grilled Atlantic Salmon "over a potato and arugula cake wrapped in bacon topped with shaved apple-fennel salad and finished with grain mustard cider jus" Completely amazing! Started with heirloom tomatoes drizzled with balsamic vinegar and topped with goat cheese, then some grilled peaches which were to die for, followed by some wonderful Alaskan salmon-it was an absolutely perfect meal! Great food and great service. Have visited ocean many times and it's always a great dinner (the one time I came for happy hour was fun as well). I was there last saturday and ordered the tartare appetizer and tuna main dish. Tartare-delicious but almost doesn't need all the seasoning and cream on top. Tuna-delicious as well, if not a little dry last week. We browsed the dessert menu and it looked like the brownie in phyllo dough was off the menu. This is by far the best authentic seafood restaurant in St. Louis. Though there were not on the menu we asked our server is they had Oysters Rockefeller, she explained they only have them on their Sunday Brunch though said she would see what she could do, We ordered a bottle of wine. Before our first glass our server walks to our table with a very hearty plate of Oyster Rockefeller. Oh, I believe they had to be in the top 2 we have ever had. I'm surprised by the mix of reviews on Oceano Bistro. I went there with a group from work. My wife and I had wonderful meals. We had the Blackened Big Eye Tuna appetizers. The tuna was perfectly cooked and very good. My wife had the Sea Bass while I had a steak. The steak was cooked just the way I asked. It was a good cut and had a lot of flavor. I tried a bit of my wife's Sea Bass and it was very good as well. The service was good but, it was a large group so the gave us our own server. Since that night, I have gone back twice more for lunch. The Tuna Burger was enjoyable (needs more wasabi but, maybe that's just me). The Steak Sandwich was awesome. read more

Good fish, not great. Had a Zinfandel which was nice but not terribly memorable. Went on mother's day. Our waiter was great and attentive (not to mention very attractive). I started with some oysters which were decent but not too flavorful (as to be expected by seafood in STL). We split the salmon flatbread which everyone seemed to like but I thought was just eh. We all had the seafood trio for our main course and it was tasty but nothing to write home about. First of all I am really confused by the mixed reviews. I love this place! I started my night with a two girlfriends at the bar. The restaurant offers a great happy hour with $5 martinis and half price appetizers. The espresso martini was delicious. I also got the Big eye tuna roll for my starter and it was so fresh and light. After our drinks in the bar we were seated on the indoor patio area. We were greeted immediately by our server, who was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. My friends and I made sure to each order a different entree to try a little of everything. We got the Tuna, Salmon, and the Soffrito. We did not have a single complaint! I'm a little confused as to the why this place gets a 3 star cumulative score...but here's my take. The salmon was fabulous--salty and buttery. The salad not overly dressed. The restaurant was full of suits (during the lunch hour) so if that's not your crowd--I wouldn't recommend it. My friend also had the salmon--and asparagus. The food was elegantly arranged on the plate and the service was good. We had to wait a relatively short time--especially considering the place was packed. Street parking is tight--but the parking fairies shined on me and I snagged a space right in front. If you're looking for a well-cooked healthy lunch or a solid go-to dining choice, I wouldn't hesitate to eat at Oceano. Great for dates, parents and businesses lunches. read more

Have eaten at Oceano several times and find it dependable. They're menu is varied and you definitely have to be a seafood person. Not the place to go with a non-seafood lover. Last time out I had the scallops, which were good, but nothing I would rave about. My husband had trout and felt the same way. It's good, service was friendly but definitely nothing I would rank as superior, in fact, I found it hard to understand the waiter sometimes. Great go to restaurant for a business meeting. I want to start out by saying that the service was great and by no means is my two star review a reflection of poor waiting etc. However, the food was another story. Although the presentation was solid the flavor lacked finesse. first: my oysters were not shelled properly, and had grit and pieces of shell on top of them. To make matters worse, they were fishy and rather deflating, which was annoying because i love that juicy burst that comes with a plump oyster. Therefore, I was not surprised when I received my next course. I order the yellowtail civiche, which lacked that wonderful fresh fish taste. In addition, the sliced avocado, which should have complimented the fish with its smooth texture, was hard as a rock. I showed the server and he apologized and regretfully admitted that they did have any ripe avocado! (im sorry what?)...then dont serve a dish when each of the components are not up to appropriate standards. That dish was $14 so find some damn ripe avocados! My branzino as well as the vegetables were chard. They had a propane taste that was rather revolting (not that yummy burnt flavor). Moreover, the branzino sat atop a bed of cous cous that was slathered in butter... If you are relying on butter to make a dish taste good, then you lack solid chef skills. I always prefer the simple drizzle of high quality EVOO to enhance by food, not a pound of stomach churning greasey butter. I would like to finish my review by saying that I not order a dessert as I had a terrible stomach ache, (even after specifically choosing light menu items). Dont go here unless you have no taste buds and want to be around a very old age group. PASS read more

Great meal to celebrate our 25th anniversary. A dozen oysters to start, split between Blue Points and the Chef's selection. My wife had Tuna and I had Sea Bass, both were outstanding. We showed up 30 minutes early for our 7:30 res on Saturday night. I've been wanting to try Oceano for a while and was looking forward to a nice dinner. When we checked in, the hostess advised "it would be a few minutes." She was not at all cheery and inviting, nor did she suggest "have a cocktail at our lovely bar while you wait" which would have been fine, and actually given us an indication that "a few minutes" might mean something more than 5-10 minutes. After waiting for those 5-10 minutes we inquired as to how much longer, thinking perhaps a drink at the bar was advisable. By now, the bartender had asked if we were being helped. The hostess then in a noticeably condescending tone, advised us we were early and it would be a while before we could be seated. Upon which we walked out, went to 801 Fish with no reservation, sat in the bar and had a wonderful meal. Maybe the hostess was having a bad day and eventually I'll let it forget about this and try Oceano again. read more
