Mother's Day Brunch Review. Overall food and service were reasonable, but nothing blew my mind. Food: Crab cakes Benedict - plenty of crab but it tasted a bit fishy. Definitely canned crab, hollandaise sauce was smooth but overall food felt under seasoned. Fried French Toast, tasted a bit oily which can happen with fries bread. Definitely indulgent and large portion. Cinnamon rolls were the best thing we ordered. Service: Attentive and friendly. Gets an A for service. Atmosphere/Decor: tables seemed a bit tight. Believe there was an ocean theme. Bar looked kind of cool but no one was allowed there due to restrictions at the time. Prices: most dishes were reasonable but a few high priced luxury items. Fits for Clayton. Overall, this is the kind of middle of the road - average. A place you could bring your parents but I'd be hesitant about a date. Wife and I went out for a date night. We were seated immediately and our server was excellent. So this 2-star review isn't due to service, but the food itself. We started off with two appetizers: Blackened Bigeye Tuna, and the Blue Point Oysters. We both enjoyed the tuna. Plenty of bright flavors w/ that pickled ginger giving it that edge. The oysters were lackluster, unfortunately. I don't usually eat oysters, but nothing about this serving made me wanting more. Next, we shared a spinach salad. My wife did not enjoy it at all, mostly complaining about the mango vinaigrette. I personally thought it was just an average-tasting salad. The potato straws gave it this weird cruch and flavor. Should've just gotten the Caesar salad. Our Entrees: Branzino and the Pan-Seared Halibut. Both dishes had very little flavor. It was disappointing. How can a chef taste these dishes and think any client would pay +$35 for under-seasoned fish complimented with lackluster sides. The kalamata olives cous cous for the Branzino just delivered this bitter taste. It made zero sense as a dish. The Halibut.... it was the most underwhelming halibut I've ever tasted. Is the head chef actually PROUD of this?? We still tipped our server over 20% because she really did an excellent job. First time dining here and chose it for our anniversary, after many years of hearing good recommendations. Few restaurants can survive and thrive and I'm glad this one did. We had a great experience from service to food. Everything on the menu sounded amazing. We chose the oysters and the prawns to start and wanted more because it was sooooo delicious. My husband got the scallops and they were perfect (med raw) but the mushrooms were even more outstanding. I had the sea bass with risotto and it was so delicate and full of flavor. We dined at Oceano on a snowy night. I was surprised that the restaurant had a decent crowd considering the weather. The crab cake appetizer was a portion of 3 small crab cakes. They were really good, lots of flavor, and crab. They are on my short list of favorite crab cakes. My Sea Bass was served over risotto. The flavors of the risotto and fish complimented each other nicely. The Sea Bass was cooked perfectly - a crispy outside and tender inside. As a lover of all desserts, especially bread pudding, I was disappointed in Oceano's. The bread pudding was a small and overall it was bland and forgettable. Unfortunately, the ice cream did improve the dessert, it was still unimpressive. I am a big raver when it comes to dessert, but I cannot come up with any compliment other than I ate it. What a great spot in Clayton! We started with the goat cheese beat salad with pine nuts. It was a nice size and super tasty! My second time here, and once again did NOT disappoint!!! The bartender Ben was above amazing, and went out of his way to give me the best experience! My goal is to try everything on their Happy Hour Menu!! :) This time I started again with the classic Martini with stuffed blue cheese olives. With that I enjoyed the Blue Point Oysters. I have always wanted to try the pearl onions in a Martini, and thanks to Ben and his searching skills he made it happen. Delish!!! I then had the Amber Glazed Salmon Flatbread. I don't even know what to say but O..M..G!!! lol Since the happy hour prices are unbeatable I went ahead and tried the Kobe Beef sliders and White Truffle Fries!! We decided to celebrate our anniversary and chose Oceano, made a reservation and drove to Clayton. (Note, parking can be a bit of a challenge you may have to walk several blocks as we did). We were seated and our server Vito was energetic, entertaining and very helpful. We selected our appetizers and dishes and got about enjoying our meal. My lady got the grilled shrimp with zucchini noodles and loved it. I selected the shellfish sofrito and enjoyed it as well. We had plenty of room for dessert and enjoyed the creme brulee and cheese cake. OB is an event restaurant-anniversary, birthday, celebration etc. and the prices and experiences reflect that-but you won't be disappointed. Welp...had high hopes for Mother's Day brunch and this classic establishment. 11am reservation and seated immediately and on time. We had our 5 month old granddaughter with us and my daughter asked for a seat for her. Through a litany of attempted problem solving on my daughter and wife's end, we were offered a booster seat by an employee who offered the seat and then walked away. Finally the general manager explained that the child seat that was initially brought could simply be turned over to hold the car seat...situation solved but could have been solved by any employee, I'd think. Water was delivered and after a few minutes, other drink orders taken. Appropriate time before Samantha can back for food orders...and the they wait began...nearly an hour later most of our food shows up...cold. Samantha never came back by and once we found a manger, who was working diligently to clean and help customers, we asked about the rest of our order and I sent my cold eggs and hash browns back(I had ordered French toast too so I had food). My partner's French toast was however, hard as a rock, seriously and while we had three orders of French toast, all three orders had what appeared to be different types of bread, weird. Anyway we also sent my wife's French toast back and we told the manager no need to replace either order. Welp, apparently the manger was not taking no for an answer and brought me back eggs, hash browns, and bacon. I told him, again, I did not want the food and he exclaimed at me "EAT IT!" Well, sorry sir, yes sir. I believe he was trying to make amends for what I think he realized was poor service and food but why are you telling at me, this isn't Seinfeld and I wasn't asking about soup! Our order of turkey sausage, once finally delivered, was actually mushy on the inside and not cooked all the way through. My daughter's chocolate chip pancakes were pancakes with some chocolate chips thrown on top and my son's mixed berry pancakes had maybe a single full strawberry sliced up and on the side. My daughter liked the seasoned potatoes and my son said the actual pancakes were very good. Samantha apologized for the experience but to add insult to injury after cleaning up dishes ourselves and about 10 minutes after Samantha cleared a few plates, I had to ask for our check...like ma'am, we aren't engaging in friendly conversation and still drinking coffee, we are putting dirty dishes on a stack so we can leave...the check please!!! Now for an incredibly busy day, the noise of the restaurant still allowed for table conversation in a normal tone and the restaurant always looks both modern and classy. Our collective party of 5 (my 5 month old granddaughter was not included in the voting) determined we don't need to be back. I was in the St. Louis for work and was thus dining alone. I like to try new local places outside the immediate realm of my hotel and this menu caught my eye. I highly recommend this restaurant- excellent food and service. The warm sea bass was excellent - I'm from the east coast on the ocean and this dish was perfection. The dessert special was excellent as well as the drinks. Tate is an exceptional and attentive server and I could not have been happier in my experience. If you are in the St Louis area, try this wonderful spot- I would definitely return should I be back in the area. So this place was a short walk from my hotel. I was in the mood for something different. Wow... This place delivered!! A bit more upscale b than I expected but everyone was super friendly. The hostess was great. My waitress was wonderful. And while I didn't get a drink, the bartender thanked me for coming in. They served me some fresh baked small hard rolls to dip in seasoned olive oil. So good. Everything looked really good on the menu. For seafood the prices are reasonable, but this was more expensive than where I've been eating the last couple days I had the rainbow trout served with the skinniest green beans and mushrooms with a delightful sauce. The food was perfectly seasoned. The green beans were so fresh and cooked to perfection. And I devoured that trout. Portion size was spot on. Pleasant quiet atmosphere. I imagine this place must be busy much of the time, but I came in off hour b and was promptly seated and attended to. They had some chicken and beef dishes as well. Next time I'm in town.... Food was good. We were surprised with a compliment serving of a warm cinnamon role for our table (4 of us). It was wonderful! We ordered the steak and eggs with hadbrowns. It was really good. Really bummer experience at Oceano today, where I took my dad for his birthday. We sat and waited probably 20 minutes before anyone ever even came by to take drink orders. Servers seemed really overworked and the restaurant was apparently understaffed. It was brunch time and we tried to order a shrimp cocktail from the regular menu. The server said the kitchen might be willing to do one for us, but they turned us down. I had the migas, which wasn't at the right temp. The tortilla chips in it were soggy and it was mostly black beans. My dad had a salad that he said was decent. The seasoned potatoes we ordered as a side were undercooked. Honestly, I wanted to like this place. It looked really nice inside and the prices were pretty reasonable for brunch. But, it just had too many problems. First, there were literal ants crawling on my plate when I received it. No joke, they were in the lettuce or onions or something. Honestly this type of stuff doesn't bother me as much as it might other people, I don't care about bugs (except roaches), I know food comes from the ground. But, what is concerning is that this restaurant obviously doesn't wash their vegetables which can lead to E.coli outbreaks and other issues, which is very concerning to me. They replaced my food, comped it, and apologized, but it obviously still left a bad taste in my mouth. I understand that this was a mistake, but after waiting 30 minutes for food in the first place, I then had to wait an additional 15 while everyone else ate, and once everyone was done I had to hurry through my food. And in the end my food comp was still less than 20% of my bill. When I received my new, bug free food, it was okay... nothing to write home about. Kinda unremarkable. Second, the service was slow and it took us around 30 minutes to even put in our orders and then once we were done eating it took about 45 minutes to get our check. I believe our waitress was working hard and I think she tried her best to do everything for us, but they just seemed poorly staffed. The owner or manager came by our table after we had finished and gave a weird speech about how well the staff did today and that they were extra busy. He told us that no one wants to work anymore because of the stimulus check, which is a weird thing to say. Overall he was just kinda rude. Overall, these might have been just a bunch of factors that all came together on a busy day, but I feel like this place might have issues with it's management. read more

Almost a home run. We had a very nice dinner for two. The crab cake appetizer was delicious, and I'm pretty picky about crab cakes. The accompaniments of a bit of arugula salad and aioli were perfect. The entrees were very good. My husband loved the special, which was a mixed seafood pasta dish. I had grilled salmon. The first half was absolutely delicious, but the second half of the filet was over-salted. A couple of other details for management to consider: the basil in my cocktail was dry and brown, and the slice of apple on my salmon had a large brown spot. These little details, including uneven salting on the salmon entree, matter in a fine dining restaurant, and take away a bit from what was otherwise a nice meal.
