I moved out of Berkeley in 1992 and when I used to go to Betty's Oceanview Diner it was a contractor hang since it's across the street from a major 'lumberyard' (which is what we called a place where a contractor could get most of what they'd need to do most anything). Forward to 2024: the place has changed hands and the clientele may have too but the vibe and food are as good as I remember. I had the corned beef hash and two poached eggs both of which were perfect. I looked at my plate thinking 'I'm never going to finish this' but guess what? I reclaimed my membership in the 'clean plate club.' And the coffee was exactly what I would expect of a diner coffee in Berkeley - strong, dark deep rocket fuel (thank you Peet's). Just had breakfast at this very busy diner. Was able to sit at the counter where I watched the talented chefs whip out different types of egg entrees, sides, etc. It amazed me how efficient the chefs and waitresses were in getting out the food to their customers. It's no wonder there's always a long line to get in (but because they're efficient, the line goes quickly!) Have to hand it to the host too. Because customers wander away to check out nearby shops during their wait, the host doesn't need a PA system, he yells out the name loudly so that the waiting customers can hear their name being called from a block away! The service was great and the staff was very nice. A little wait of a waitlist but the staff did a great job getting through it. My husband and I did get our food probably 10 minutes apart, otherwise still great service. The coffee was pretty good but it was a hot latte in a glass cup, which was pretty hot to pick up for a while. The ambiance of the restaurant was nice. My husband and I sat outside and there was a guitarist playing music on the sidewalk during our visit. Overall good experience. read more

I can't believe I've never written review of this place! This is my absolute favorite breakfast spot! (I used to have two favorites but the other one is no longer in business) The soufflé pancakes are the bomb! I will warn you they take 30 minutes but if you ask me they are totally worth waiting for. I usually go for the seasonal fruit one but last time I was there it was strawberry and peaches and I don't like cooked strawberries so I went outside of my usual and the special happened to be lemon ricotta pancakes. I've had fantastic lemon ricotta pancakes at another restaurant so I thought to myself we'll see if they measure up to my expectations and they absolutely did!!! Stopped here on a whim after shopping with some friends. My friend and I ordered the tuna melt and the goat cheese and red pepper sandwiches and split them. The tuna melt was pretty good, but the goat cheese and pepper sandwich was amazing! It was so delicious! The baguette was crispy and chewy and there was just enough goat cheese on the sandwich. It was so good that I'm going to try to recreate it at home. My other friend ordered the club sandwich, which she said she enjoyed. Only complains were that there were little gnats that wouldn't leave us alone the entire meal and that I received the wrong beverage. I had ordered a hard cider bottle and received a hot spiced cider. I didn't mention it because the servers seemed really busy. Otherwise, it was a great lunch! read more

Usually, this is my go-to breakfast in Emeryville. They do a top notched job in an unassuming 50s style diner. My last visit was slightly disappointing: eggs-over-easy were eggs-over-runny. Other than that, the fried tomatoes were great and were I to have ordered an omelet or other, I probably wouldn't have been disappointed. I've liked everything I've ever had here, but my go-tos 99% of the time are the Maryland (corned beef hash) and/or banana rum souffle pancake. I haven't found anything like these two dishes anywhere else. (Also, I don't even like corned beef hash. This is the only place I'll order it.) I've been coming here for years, and must admit I still call it Bette's, just like Candlestick was Candlestick to me until the end. A lot of restaurants that I've liked have come and gone, but I have't really found myself missing them. Not the way I would have missed this place, had it stayed closed. So, a big "thank you" to the workers who banded together and bought and saved the restaurant two years ago. So glad Bette's people worked out a way for Oceanview to stay at this spot and from what I hear, brought back the staff! The menu and prices are pretty much the same. The Yelp waitlist option is awesome...just be within earshot for your name to be called. Staff were super friendly! The food was ok today (Sunday). It took 25+ minutes for food to come out. My herb and cheese omelet was not French style by the time it came out. It was close to well done and was not seasoned and there was no cheese. The portion of eggs and potatoes seemed smaller than I had the last time, and my pastry was left off. I am a long time Bette's Diner customer. Tried the new Bette's today. The good, the bad, the ugly. The good is that some of the clutter is gone and that awful smell to the diner is gone. Bette's was always a pretty dirty place but the new place is MUCH cleaner. The service was polite albeit very slow. The food was significantly worse. I have Chili that tasted like Hormel canned chili only not as good. It was served with a stale slice of bread which they calle a baguette. The portions are very small. My wife had what looked like a one egg omelet. The prices have increased a lot and they now add a service charge to the bill. Adding a significant upcharge to a cappucino made with oatmilk seem unreasonable. The food is definitely a big disappointment. Too bad they lost their long time chef who was great. This place is a Berkeley staple, thanks to the employees who saved it from closing by purchasing it from the owners. My lox and eggs were perfect, just the way I like them: fluffy, a bit undercooked, buttery and not too salty. Excellent on the bagel. Amazingly crispy hash browns with a dollop of sour cream on the side rounded out my plate. My son had the Reuben, overflowing with gooey yummyness. The guy next to us ate corned beef hash with poached eggs on top. Crunchy hash and runny warm eggs. Make sure to ask for them to cook it extra crispy. The ambiance is that of a vintage diner. All told, we'll be back next tim I visit Berkeley and I just might try the pancake soufflé, for which they are famous. read more

Had brunch here. Cinnamon roll pancakes Runner forgot creme sauce. At check out, host person was super unpleasant and rude when I asked for a split check. As a person who works in the industry it's not that hard and I shouldn't be told no. She also immediately moved on to the next guest instead of helping me and making sure my needs were met. read more

Bette's Oceanview Diner has reopened as the Oceanview Diner, a workers' cooperative. They have strong support from their landlord, who recently presented them w/ a new neon sign for the front window. Nina and I came here for lunch today. I found street parking a short walk away and joined the waiting list. The estimate for the wait was 10-20 minutes and our wait was on the shorter side of that. We were willing to take indoor or outdoor seating and ended up outdoors. People watching was terrific, but it was chillier than either of us expected because of the wind. We stayed outside and hoped our food would warm us up and it did. We looked over the menu and both decided on sandwiches, a fish sandwich for Nina and a Reuben for me. both w/ their tangy slaw as a side, though there are other options like potato salad, black beans or home fries. Our server was Sergio and he was charming. We had hot tea to drink, mint for Nina and English breakfast for me. Sergio brought us thick diner-style mugs for our tea. There was half and half and sweetener on the table. Our sandwiches were delicious. I loved the Reuben, which was nicely balanced and just the right size, not too big. Nina enjoyed her sandwich, which was cod, a favorite fish of hers. When we were paying our bill I told Sergio that we really liked that they were a workers' cooperative and he teasingly said he'd see me tomorrow morning and we all laughed. read more

After a delicious breakfast (even with egg shells in the omelette), our bill came to be $87. We left $100 on the table which included a $12 tip for the server who identified herself as an owner. On the way out the self identified owner runs up to me yelling with all the restaurants attention on me! "YOU FORGOT TO PAY" I was shocked and preceded tell her that the hundred dollars was on the table and informed her that came to both EAT and PAY! The self identified owner goes on to tell me what people usually do and how people usually pay. I told her she should never do that to her customers and take a second look before publicly embarrassing an African-American customer yelling "YOU FORGOT TO PAY". When I get to my car I realize I'm leaving a $12 tip for a woman who accosted me saying "you forgot to pay". No self identified owner deserves a tip when accusing a customer of "forgetting to pay" especially when I came to this restaurant to PAY and EAT. I'm not sure if it's common for the customers to forget to pay but I have never dined out and "forgot to pay" not to mentioned we were the only two female black customers in the restaurant (with the addition of the black cook who I've been seeing the 30years I've been dining here). When I was gathering my change. The woman asked is she could talk to me outside and I told her no. She didn't like that I refused to speak with her outside and she yelled again with everyone spectating to "never come back". I don't deserve to be accused, and I don't deserve to be yelled at in a place where I'm spending my hard earned money. I will not patronize this business again! The food is always delicious. I've been coming for over 25 years and it has been our regular meeting place for brunch. Service was horrid today. I ordered an omelette and morning bun and my brother ordered a soufflé pancake ( which is to die for). They served the omelette separately which left us eating alone and watching the other eat. They ran out of morning buns (actually they really didn't cuz we bought one later next door) and substituted a muffin instead and didn't say anything. I asked for a scone instead. They served me a burnt old muffin instead. The server didn't refill coffee. It just was just plain old bad service! I hope my next visit is better! read more
