Stir Fry Ginger Shrimp, Shau Mai, rice
    John G.

Ocha Thai is new to Candler, and just across from the major shopping center, so it is very convenient. I called in an order for their Shau Mai and stir-fry shrimp in ginger sauce. I was told 25 minutes. I waited for 15, and did the 10 minute drive, and my dinner was ready when I arrived. Both the person on the phone who took my order and the staff I talked to picking it up were very pleasant and polite. The place is new, so it absolutely shines. Maybe just a touch sterile, but a great place to have a sit-down dinner. When I got home and opened the packaging I was immediately impressed with just how fresh and colorful everything was, the vivid green of the snow peas and scallions offsetting the deep orange of the carrots and shrimp. And it tasted every bit as good as it looked. The heat level from the fresh ginger threads was perfect for my taste. The shrimp was perfectly cooked, plump and tender. The only complaint I might have was the Shau Mai seemed a bit rubbery, but it was still quite tasty. Ocha is definitely a step (or two) up from most of the Asian food I've had since moving to Candler. They're my new go-to for stir-fry.

Great options on the Lunch menu. Service and ambiance were great. All of our orders were very good and will be back.

The ambiance is super upbeat and lively. It can be busy, and there can be a wait depending on how busy it is. Though, it is worth it! I ordered the staple, chicken pad Thai!!! Spice level #4! It was delicious, flavorful, pleasantly spicy, and topped with so many fresh vegetables! The crispy spring rolls tasted like heaven!!! The sauce was so luscious and yum!!! I am glad that I stopped here! Cheers.

So, that's how I chose Thai food to close out the year. Parking. It's on Broadway. Check the signs. Don't get excited like me and pull in only to find it's for loading/unloading or handicapped. I ended up just parking in one of the lots. 3 hour parking for $18.50. I don't know if that's the standard rate or if it was inflated for NYE but after having done a few laps, I just said WTH and pulled right in. It was only a block and a half away. The place wasn't packed but bustling with to go orders. We did arrive later and by the time we left, there were only a few tables occupied. Not being busy, but also being sat where we were - service was great. Attentive as we were always within line of sight of the team and all we needed to do was make eye contact. Not that we needed to other than refills and for me, spicy chili powder/sauce. Food was good. Not spicy - but as my friend would say - nothing is spicy for me. But I wanted the added heat as it was a little chilly out. Good flavors but not explosions like I'm used to. Not that it was bad - maybe it was on the muted side for the demographics? It was a very nice tasty dinner to close out 2025!

It was highly regarded before that, and offers to make many of its menu items vegan. I was a tad disappointed that the bar promised some non-alcoholic hop water options but didn't seem to have any in stock, which may relate to the storm as well. This food truck, however, delivered the goods. It is not a speedy process, and when I tried visiting before they sold out of food before the end of the day so I came early this time. They give you a buzzer so you can wander around and order drinks. When my tofu arrived, it was mouthwatering. The amount of rice was quite large, but this was some aromatic rice, and the tofu itself tasted like high quality stuff and was bathed in an herbal, spicy flavor that I imagine is about as close to Thailand as you could get in Asheville. It was a lot of money for a modestly sized disposable bowl of food, but the quality merited a visit. I doubt I could have found myself eating anything more delicious. And yet, their other menu options remained on my mind.

I was never all that impressed with food trucks until moving here to Asheville. Given the…read morecomplementary relationship with the many craft breweries that don't do food themselves, plus all the local outdoor events for 9 months of the year, there are some truly great food trucks based here. Cassia is definitely one of the top ones. This is some of the best and most original Thai food I've ever had. They are a regular at Cellarest Beer Project in West Asheville. The food is prepared fresh, but the wait is not too long. And if you sit in the right spot, you may be able to enjoy the fragrant scent of Thai food as it is being prepared in their mobile kitchen. We started with the Firecracker sweet potatoes. These amazing little jewels are mashed sweet potatoes wrapped in the same coating as you'd normally have with a spring roll or won ton. They had a wonderful crispy outside with a flavorful sweet potato mash inside. The spicy mayo dipping sauce was excellent, but we also loved dipping these into the golden curry sauce that came with our curry duck. Where do you ever see curry duck BTW? The duck was cooked perfectly and not at all grisly or chewy. The curry sauce was absolutely incredible. Great flavor along with a nice kick. Between eating the duck and jasmine rice with the curry sauce and dipping some of the Firecrackers in it, there was literally not a speck of curry sauce left behind. We also had chicken Laab Gai. The mint leaves in this were really tasty and not overwhelmingly minty. The sticky rice was good. These came with cabbage leaves that you can roll the meat and rice up in to create a sort of Thai taco. This was good, but not at the same level as the duck curry. Maybe a bit more sauce would help. Prices are restaurant level but well worth it given this is restaurant-quality food or better. We paired the food with two fine beers from Cellarest. The Czech-style Moonglade Tmave pivo had great character. The Weald Oktoberfest Marzen lager was also excellent. Both went very well with the Thai food. Apart from maybe the dead of winter, this will be a place we go back to for more great Thai food.

When ordered from Archetype, the food comes out quickly and conveniently. That's a great set-up! When I came to eat at Gan Shan, we sat in their outdoor space, which was cute! They do a great job with tofu here! The Gan Shan Rice Bowl had less tofu but more additions like pickled vegetables and kimchi. The General Tso's bowl had amazing flavor, and you didn't really need more than the tofu and broccoli! We also tried one of the ginger drinks, which was good, and some sake. It's a great place to come with a friend and share dishes to try more options. I will be back soon!

Upon arriving to pick it up, I realized we should have eaten in the restaurant instead of on our couch. What an inviting, gorgeous atmosphere Jazmin has. The vibe matches the food. While the takeout arrangement (secure containers, bags, utensils) was everything you hope for when getting takeout, I highly recommend eating there so you can experience this enchanting place. A minor problem arose while I was there, and the staff were immediately, discreetly and professionally "on it", resolving the issue in a very satisfactory manner. That impressed me. It gave me a chance to visit their attractive bar, with a friendly bartender who made an excellent Singapore Sling. We were delighted with the food. Potstickers, beef siu mai dumplings, wonton soup, and 2 forms of fried rice - chicken basil, and curried pineapple - were all fantastic. Portions were generous. We will be back soon.
