Came to Oh Banzai for handrolls. Each handroll costs between $5.80 to $20, depending on the ingredients you choose. The lower end will cover the basic tuna/salmon handrolls and the top end covers uni, wagyu, scallop, caviar, or a combination of these. The shop has counter seating and a few tables. They give you an option of a single or double serving for your handrolls. We opted for a double portion of rice as it was filling; however, the ratio of rice to fish could be more enjoyable for a single portion of rice. Quality of the handrolls was good, service was friendly enough, flavor combinations felt pretty authentic. This said, don't expect huge flavor bombs here. When you get ponzu + daikon, or chili crisp topping your fish, it's going to be understated so that it doesn't overpower your fish and rice. My favorite handroll was the wagyu handroll with "garlic salt sauce". Didn't have much to report about the other handrolls that I ordered. Note that they serve all of your handrolls at once. If you want to take your time, maybe order a beer/sake and consider ordering 2-3 rolls at a time, so that your seaweed doesn't get soggy or cold. In Southern California we are lucky to have several options for handrolls, and this is a decent one for the South Bay; however, I still prefer the experiences at Kazunori or ROL in LA and OC counties.

I initially ordered 3 hand rolls, since I'm notorious for not finishing my food, but I ended up surprising everyone by ordering 2 more! I couldn't help myself, the hand rolls were so delicious! My favorite one was the salmon chili oil! I ordered 2 of those and tried other hand rolls that were also delicious! I enjoyed the Wagyu carpaccio, the touch of lemon makes it even more delicious. The tofu cheese was surprisingly pleasant with the wasabi. It didn't make sense, but when I had it the flavors were amazing together. It's not actual cheese, but tastes like it and has the texture of it. Highly recommend the Sakura lemonade, so good! The waitresses we had were courteous and didn't judge me for adding more rolls when everyone else was done eating, so I really appreciate the no judgement vibes. :) Ambience reminded me of Japan! Good amount of space with at least 5+ tables.

The Ocean Gems Tartare must try. 10/10

A true Japanese owned business. Great quality and prepared with Japanese artistry. High end selections to standard handroll's. The restaurant is located in a strip mall with other Japanese food businesses. The best deal is during lunch. They offer 3 & 5 Handroll sets which comes with a chefs choice appetizer and miso soup. They offer many Japanese small plates and salads. We ordered the Ocean Gems Tartare and it was so good. With Negitoro, Uni, Ikura, caviar, and truffle with some crispy nori from Japan. I will definitely return and I will time it to come back during the lunch special menu.

I came here twice this week due to an amazing deal they had. They were giving out 1 free roll per person. I also came here maybe about a month ago and absolutely loved it! I've had multiple rolls at this point and have not been disappointed once. My favorite rolls always include the scallops but all their toppings on their rolls are so good too! Can't wait to come back!

I randomly stopped by this place because I was in the area and another sushi spot was closing, and wow -I'm so glad I did. This place turned out to be an absolute gem and is now one of my new favorite sushi spots. The sushi was incredibly fresh and delicious. Every bite felt like an explosion of flavor. Honestly, everything I ordered was amazing nothing was even close to mediocre. I loved the generous portion sizes, & also loved the garnishes they paired with the fish on each hand roll; they really complemented the flavors perfectly. I ordered their sake flight, which was solid, and ended up getting six hand rolls, bluefin tuna, salmon, rockfish, scallop, and I also tried my friend's snow crab roll. I'm pretty sure they use real snow crab because that one was especially delicious. After 10pm they serve a mini truffle ramen, and wow that dish was surprisingly good too. Another thing I appreciated is that they offer a free double portion of rice on the hand rolls, which is a nice touch. Service overall was good one of the girls was just okay, but nothing that took away from the experience. The ambiance was really nice and super clean, and it would definitely make a great date spot.

I've been wanting to try this place forever but it's been difficult for me to make the trip since they opened. Finally I was able to come during Dine L.A. week. The location of this restaurant is in a very small and overcrowded plaza this multiple restaurants and a bank. Parking here is insufferable to say the least. I drove around the lot 3 times and ended up across the Main Street on the road and walked over. The restaurant itself is also fairly small. And it gets packed very quickly. I got lucky to be seated right away but the crowds came right after and the wait looked long. I got a bunch of different hand rolls, chicken skin appetizer, some drinks. The server also gave my party free seaweed paste to take home to eat with like noodles. We tried that at home and it was actually delicious. All the food there was fresh and filling. I definitely want to come back and try their happy hour where they have a special for 3 hand rolls for $18 or 5 for $26

Dine LA 2026 Friday 1/30/2026 After work, heading home - spur of the moment decision to head into Gardena to try Oh Banzai. Made a reservation while driving down just in case it was busy. It wasn't. But it picked up by the time I was leaving. For starters, located on the corner of 182nd and S Western. Free parking lot but know that when that plaza picks up, parking can be challenging. My res was at 5:15. Parking lot was practically empty. I parked right in front. Seated immediately at the bar. Small place. Bar seating along with some tables. I didn't count but just know if you have a large party, better call ahead and know it'll be tight. Small dining area made for pretty good service. All I had to do was look at the servers (team of 2) and there were right there. Food was brought out quickly and timed pretty well so I wasn't sitting there with a bunch of different dishes. I opted for the DineLA menu plus a couple of appetizers and a large beer. See pics. I'll start with the handrolls. Crispy Nori. Fish, clean and fresh. Mix of ingredients complimented each other - nothing overpowering. Enjoyed all the rolls and would order each one again without hesitation. The simmered beef was a good but not a standout for me. It may have been if it were served with rice. Otherwise, it was like a bowl of soup with beef but not quite soup. Keep in mind, it's a preference thing. As for the appetizers, liked the seasoned quail eggs but really loved the sunomono with scallops and shrimp. Seasoned quail eggs taste for me didn't align with the rest of dinner. But that was on me. I wanted them because I hadn't had them in a while. I knew better but I didn't care. The stomach gets what it wants. Finished it off with Zenzai. Sweet Azuki Beans and Rice Flour Dumplings. Light and a perfect way to cap dinner and the work week.

Quick handroll fix after a late night workout. Really glad this place is open late - there's not too many options so happy to have some pretty good food later in the evening. Ordered a few handrolls - was easy eats and no frills. One thing to note - the rice portions are different for lunch vs dinner - dinner is typically a bit less I think. They would add more rice on request though. Will be back!

Popped into this restaurant for lunch over the weekend with the wife. She suggested it after seeing some positive reviews on Yelp. I came here with very low expectations since I've never been a fan of hand rolls. I mean, it's a hand roll. How great could it be right? Well, spoiler alert, I left with a newfound appreciation for hand rolls. From the menu, I ordered the 5 pcs set which comes with 5 hand rolls (you get to choose the type of hand rolls you want from a list of options), a small dish of green veggies, and miso soup. For my rolls, I ordered the following; -Tuna + Kizomu Wasabi -Negi-Toro -Spicy Tuna -Onion Crunchy Chili Oil Salmon -Grated Daikon Ponzu Snow Crab I thoroughly enjoyed every roll. Each roll had fresh fish/meat on them, and the toppings paired perfectly with each of the main ingredients. Note: It looks like a lot of food when you get the rolls, but they're surprisingly light and not filling at all. You may end ordering extra rolls! For my drink, I ordered the Pineapple Koso Enzyme Drink. At first, I thought it tasted funny. Then it started to grow on me as I took more and more sips. It's very refreshing and a welcome change from your typical fruit drink. Finally, for dessert, I ordered their cake of the day which was a roll cake topped with chestnuts. Actually, my wife and I both did. The server told us that they get the cakes from the Bonjour bakery a few doors down in the same strip mall the restaurant is located. I think the restaurant did jazz the cakes up a bit before serving them to us. We enjoyed the cake so much that we stopped by the bakery after we ate at this restaurant. Unfortunately, most of their cakes were sold out by the time we got there. Anyway, I have to highlight the service at this restaurant. It's top notch. Every employee, not just our server, was pleasant. They created a welcoming environment. Also, the food and drinks came out very fast. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at this restaurant and plan to come back very soon. This is one of those places I can imagine coming back to on a regular basis. I highly recommend you give this place a try. It converted me into a lover of hand rolls.

Based on social media and other Yelp reviews, I thought this would be better. Quite pricey for the amount of food, and size of fish is small. What really threw me off was the yuzu jelly they use in some of their hand rolls. The texture was not it for me. The chicken wings were also way overpriced and not seasoned at all. Service was good and friendly, but I'd probably go elsewhere unfortunately.

This place is incredible, and my husband and I will be regulars at this establishment moving forward! First of all, their fish is so fresh, their hand rolls are a good size and also a good price. I like that you can customize the toppings/flavors based off of your own personal preferences, and you can pick your own proteins as well for their three or five hand roll set. They were pretty busy on Sunday, however, food still comes out really quickly. The service is very polite as well. The Matcha, Mont Blanc dessert is amazing, my husband ate half of the dessert, and he is not a dessert person. It was the perfect amount of sweetness as well. We also really enjoy their enzyme drink, Koso, it's perfectly sweetened, bright, and sparkling.

Solid spot for some hand rolls. We ordered several appetizers to try, our favorite being the ocean gem tartar which was one of their new items. All their rolls were good except the chili crisp salmon, the salmon was really chewy. Everything else was fresh, flavors were great. The service was pretty good, food came out at a decent pace.

What is amazing is that each visit seems to be better than last, I don't know how chef Daniel does it. I love chef Daniel and his team. Currently, his sister Annie is working the service, and she is so friendly and nice. I love the atmosphere of the restaurant. I started frequenting omakase back when it was cool for the chefs to be "sushi Nazi", unfriendly and aloof, and chef Daniel is the extreme opposite. As for the food... amazing! The courses are similar, starting with appetizers, then nigiri items, and ending with dessert. Some of my favorite items are the mackerel sando (mackerel in home made bread, delish), Jeju abalone with sauce made from its innards, yaki-tamago dessert, beautiful Meiji tofu with dashi broth, I could go on and on. I've had many abalone in my lifetime, but the abalone here is the best I've ever had. He usually has seasonal fish that is limited in availability, and it's such a treat to be able to experience such variety of items. Chef Daniel is also very informative about every course and I learn something new every time, so it makes the dining experience even more special. I highly recommend Sushi Sonagi, Free parking in the lot and reservation is through Tock. Enjoy!

KenScale: 8.5/10 Visit: December 2025…read more Before we headed off to Los Angeles, my wife Jun and I debated where to take out our longtime friend and her husband the night before our trip together to the Santa Barbara wine country. We knew her friend loves sushi but it also happened that we had visited Sushi Sho in New York in the fall that we were afraid we might be too spoiled to enjoy another sushi restaurant. At the end, we decided to focus on treating our friend and booked a reservation to Sushi Sonagi, located inside a strip mall in Gardena outside LA. At the end of the night, Jun and I were surprised just how much we loved our experience at this sushi restaurant. The chef Daniel Son, a second-generation chef, is in charge of all of the dishes at Sushi Sonagi, which has a single counter table with two shifts per night. What really stood out about the omakase at Sushi Sonagi (the menu costs $250 per person) is chef Daniel's openness to experimenting with ingredients not typically used at a sushi restaurant, as well as the overall balance in flavor of all the dishes. The opening dishes featured a super delicious chawanmushi with snow crab and (unexpectedly) sweet corn. The fried green eyes fish was also another delightful item on the course, as well the mackerel sandwich that Jun really enjoyed even though mackerel is not her favorite fish. My two favorite dishes before the nigiri section were the black abalone (sourced from Korea's Jeju Island) with liver sauce - this is one delicacy that I won't stop thinking about for a while - and monkfish liver (which had a bit of wasabi on top to a surprising effect) that would've held its own against ankimo at other top-end sushi restaurants. The nigiris coming from chef Daniel's magical touch were also of consistently high quality; Jun and I were especially impressed with how each piece wasn't overly seasoned to maximize the texture of the fish. Some of the standout pieces wowed us with ingredients we had not encountered before, like the baby green onions that complemented beautifully with spotted skipjack tuna, or the seared flounder fin that was exceptional for its textural complexity. I certainly don't recall having many langoustine nigiri at sushi restaurants before, and after chef Daniel brought one (from New Zealand) with wonderfully crunchy texture, I wondered why other sushi restaurants don't try this ingredient more often. After a few more nigiri pieces and an aromatic soup of tofu, yuzu and chrysanthemum came the highlight of our dinner, a stone pot rice with female snow crab inside. The rice umami of this rice dish was so irresistible that even though I was pretty full by then, I felt compelled to ask for a second bowl. Even the tamago from Sushi Sonagi is not an ordinary egg custard, with miso butter that added an entirely different dimension to the dish. Getting a reservation at Sushi Sonagi, given its popularity in the LA dining scene and also limited seatings (the restaurant is only open Thursday through Saturday), will definitely require advance planning (plus $200 deposit per person, which will be fully refunded on the reservation day). Given that the reservation window opens 30 days prior at midnight Pacific Time, I was afraid I might miss the window but if you are able to wake up early Eastern Time the next day, most likely you will be able to snag a table. The modest and cozy setting of the counter gives a warm neighborhood restaurant vibe that belies the very high quality of dishes coming out of chef Daniel's hands. The restaurant does have a decent number of sakes and some limited wines on the beverage list; it also allows corkage for a fairly modest price of $45 / wine bottle so I brought a couple of champagnes from a wine shop in LA (I highly recommend Thatcher's Wine in Brentwood) to take advantage of the policy. At the end of the meal, we chatted for a bit with chef Daniel, who is a truly nice person that simply enjoys what he does and is eager to continue to improve upon his craft. I am so glad that there are still sushi restaurants out there that can wow us with an exceptional omakase meal and would gladly be back to visit Sushi Sonagi next time we are in LA.

You will find this shop within an apartment complex on the first floor around a courtyard. If nobody is at the window, ring the bell at your pick up time and a friendly person will attend to you. The ladies are so cute. And the to go boxes are so cute and perfect as well. Once you grab your box, you can enjoy it at home or take it to the park.... Don't forget to bring cash as this is a cash only place!!!!

A really good friend of mine introduced this place to me a few years ago and since then, I've be hooked. Also, I must add! Their sushi rice is prepared to perfection. Once you place your order, they carefully pack your box like a gift! Customer service is the best. You can tell they take pride with their food. Restaurant is really small and meant for to go orders only. This place can be a bit hard to find so keep that in mind. Anyway, support small businesses and enjoy!!

Really amazing quality, and not too expensive So, I have a new rating system......I will write what I feel honestly about an establishment. The only ratings I will give are 5 stars, which is enjoyable, or 3 stars which is "needs work."

I really love this restaurant. The food is top notch and service is excellent. I haven't been here…read moreduring dinner hours but coming in for lunch, it hasn't been overly crowded and parking isn't a problem even though the lot isn't very big. They share the lot with a ramen shop and bar so I would think parking would be challenging at night. My wife ordered a lunch special that included tempura, chicken karaage, assorted rolls, and 3 pieces of nigiri sushi that was very reasonably priced. It also comes with an egg custard, salad and miso soup. I ordered an assortment of nigiri sushi that included salmon, tuna, sea urchin, mackerel, unagi and a negi toro hand roll. The sea urchin was some of the best I've ever had. The only one that disappointed me a bit was the hand roll. It wasn't bad but didn't match the level of the other sushi I ordered. Everything else was superb and we left very satisfied. I would come back more often but my wife always wants to try new places so it takes me a while to get back to places I really enjoyed previously. Hopefully, Toshi will be an exception so I can return very soon for another round of amazing sushi.

Parking: you can either park on the street, if there is parking; or park in the lot where h can enter from the back of the restaurant. Get there before 5 to grab a seat because the place fills up QUICK. Inside is small and narrow. If you're not a big eater, share a dish. Their portions are HUGE!! Biggest plates I've seen for a Japanese restaurant. The servers there work hard and try to be quick as possible. I would definitely come back here.

With so many options, it was honestly a little overwhelming to choose. I decided to keep things simple and ordered the sashimi and broiled mackerel fish set, which came with rice, miso soup, cabbage salad, and macaroni salad. My husband couldn't settle on just one dish, so he went all out with a chicken oyakodon, grilled salmon, steamed eggplant, and a stir-fried chicken and bean sprout dish. The restaurant itself is narrow and deep, which actually reminded me of some of the small alleyway restaurants we visited during our travels in Japan. It added to the cozy and authentic feel. The service was attentive, especially when we requested a few extra items. One thing that really stood out was their ponzu sauce. It seemed to include green onions and perhaps a touch of vinegar, and it was absolutely delicious. It paired perfectly with the sashimi, steamed eggplant, and even the chicken dishes. Next time, I'm definitely going to spend some time studying the menu beforehand. The portions were generous enough that we had leftovers for another meal, and we were lucky enough to find parking right in front of the restaurant.
