Had an amazing experience here for dinner. We ordered a variety of food, including the White Tiger maki, Hamachi Truffle maki; and tuna, hamachi, and salmon sushi (can't remember which types specifically). The fish was very fresh, and the sushi practically melted in my mouth! Everything was extremely tasty and maki rolls were all very unique and presented beautifully. We also had the chocolate cake for dessert which was amazing as well. Waiter was also very friendly and service was prompt. Ambience was sleek and modern. What a wonderful sushi bar experience thanks to Nancy, our top notched Server. Her welcoming spirit & knowledge of all the menus was an extra plus, in addition to her presence always on time. I kept my ordering pretty simple with the California/Vegetable Rolls & tasty order of Sautéed Mushroom. My WomanBaby had the Teriyaki Chicken that was literally two marinated wings that was prepared braised style & stated they were a tad bit burnt. We also had the Vegetable Noodles that was plentiful for the both of us to enjoy. **07/25/2020** Below is a quick explanation of my rating mechanism: 1star: Absolutely horrible and will not come back under any circumstances 2 stars: Way below my initial expectation with very few highlights. Will only come back to order specific courses if my friend strongly insist. 3 stars: Average with some turn-offs. Might give it a second chance to test more dishes out. 4 stars: Meets expectation with a couple highlights. Will come back. 5 stars: Exceeds my expectation by various aspects. Will come back quite often and also recommend the place to my friends. My first dine-in meal (lunch) in Boston, so my expectation was quite high given the high-rating reviews and the price points. Ambiance: I do like the classic and simple interior of the restaurant. Nothing too fancy to blow your mind but does bring up a tranquil vibe that you'd expect from a high-end Japanese restaurant. One thing to note is that they do have a screen between the tables to make me feel quite secure with dining in here. Service: Overall quite satisfying. The staff here are respectful, efficient, and ready to answer your questions on the dishes. To some degree, it would be expected given the low volume of people dining in the restaurant. Food: Toro Tartare ($45): NOT RECOMMEND. The display of the dish (see picture) is quite impressive, with the bowl sitting on top of a giant icy base. Toro tartare is topped with scallions and caviar. Everything is absolutely fresh with shoyo as the main seasoning. It was what I would expect but it's a bit too pricy as I feel that I've spent half of the price on the display only. Pork Belly Buns ($18): RECOMMEND. The dish is surprisingly delicious that comes with 2 buns. The bun is steamed on point and the pork belly within is very flavorful (resembling the taste of Peking duck) without being too greasy. Uni Sashimi (Hokkaido) ($12): SUPER RECOMMEND. Hands down the highlight of the meal. I haven't tasted uni this fresh and sweet for a very long time (especially with COVID-19). The portion size is also quite generous. So a must-order for Uni-lovers here in BOS. Toro Truffle Maki ($28): NOT RECOMMEND. Ordered as it's the most popular roll dish here. The layers of texture are quite interesting with truffle, Xavier and toro on top and crispy shrimp tempura rolled inside the rice. The overall taste, however, is on the blander end of the spectrum. I have a higher expectation on this dish as the "Flagship" of the roll selections here. I wouldn't try it again but rather save the quota for the other choices next time. For the Love of Salmon ($26): RECOMMEND. I like it better than Toro Truffle. There are more distinct flavors that you can taste from one bite, from yellow mustard, fish roes, to king salmon cube and avocado. Lobster Maki ($18): NOT RECOMMEND. One thing that I'd definitely NOT order again. Overall it's too bland and bitter (presumably from the purple cabbage) and not as refreshing as you'd expect from a cucumber roll. Plus you can barely taste the lobster meat. Overall, the dining experience has slightly exceeded my expectation. One extra star goes to the Uni sashimi as it could be the only reason to come back here again. The price point is definitely on the higher end of the spectrum so I'd be more selective in the dishes that I'll order next time. read more

Went there for dinner. Overall excellent! To start off appetizers we had the truffle green beans which tasted amazing! For main course I ordered the maki speciality roll which comes with torched otoro, spicy mayo, jalapeno and was pretty tasty. Also about 15 pieces a la carte including otoro, aji, beef with foie grais, umi, swordfish, salmon, shrimp, etc. All were very tasty! The price a la carte is separate for sushi and more expensive for sashimi. I also tried the wagyu beef sliders with foie gras with shaved truffle. Very tasty but fairly small portion for $70. For drinks I tried the whiskey highball which was standard, the lychee martini was freaking delicious! And I tried one of the sake bottles which was standard as well. Overall great food although def pricey. The only thing I didn't like is they took a long time to take our orders and brought them out 1 by 1 which was rather strange. read more

We ordered: * Scallops Crispy Shiso w/crispy taro * Grilled Black Cod w/miso sauce * Sudachi Seared Hamachi roll * Japanese A5 steak We also ordered a bottle of Hakkaisan sake from Niigata. It truly was a fabulous and relaxing experience. Great date night place. Our server was super attentive to us and gave great recommendations based upon what we were interested in trying on the menu. Drinks and food came out very quick only downside we wish was the order of the maki coming out. Wish the appetizer came first then our maki but the flavor of it all was so good. The squid ink noodles were our favorite (tasty and garlic flavoring 5 stars). The salmon on fire was our second favorite for an app. Def recommend the Hamachi truffle was super rich in flavor for a roll and the white tiger was a nice balance roll. I don't know what happened. A decade ago I loved this place and thought it was one of the premiere sushi restaurants along with Fugakyu. Now, this place doesn't even quench my appetite for sushi. The prices are too high for what you get. The maki has been mostly unchanged for a decade. And the menu items they have added are overly pretentious and don't taste great. For instance, their scallops on tempura shiso (Japanese mint leaf) has too many fried elements. The shiso should have a sharper mint-y flavor, but deep frying it in batter has destroyed all of the herb's flavor. You only taste tempura! Same goes for the loads of tempura strings they piled on top of the scallops. All you taste is batter and oil, not a nice scallop. Also their Wagyu maki chef special, which I thought was going to be a nice strip of Wagyu steak wrapped in tofu paper and a green onion... turned out to be a deep fried tofu wrapper around chopped up bits of beef and scallion. And not very good cuts of beef either. It was either chunks of fat or sinew. If we combined all the pieces of beef together, it would be about a 1 ounce portion. It was $30. Also, to mask whatever was going on down there, they coated it in a heavy sweet teriyaki sauce. Isn't Wagyu supposed to be a prime piece of beef, only graced with salt and pepper? Why is it doused in teriyaki sauce? The maki is okay. Their sweet potato / yam maki used to be a huge favorite with me. It's still good but it seemed a but undercooked: the yam was still slightly crunchy. Their King salmon maki with the chive garnish is still very good though. I think they just need to stop the over-chefed items, and focus on fresh fish and letting the natural flavors speak for themselves. Get a chirashi dish in there! Forget the Wagyu burgers and teriyaki-doused, tempura-overloaded dishes. read more

I've been to Oishii a number of times over the years. I first had sushi in 1980. Since then I've enjoyed it in the finest restaurants all over the world, including many times in Tokyo and Osaka. I travelled down from the North Shore just for this special meal with mv nephew. The prices are outrageous. Servings are pitifully small, however visually beautiful. We all left there hungry because, although I could afford to eat more, I felt taken advantage of. Their attitude is quite pretentious. I will never go there again. read more

Fiance brought me here for my birthday and I thought the omakase was thoughtful and delicious, although it was surprisingly heavy on dessert, which I wasn't a fan of. We had the 6 course omakase and added on the wagyu. There's an edamame based amuse bouche, followed by 4 really delicious fish based courses. My favorite was the truffle salmon, followed by the very fresh nigiri. The extra wagyu was also exceptional. No complaints about the wonderful courses. They did, however, provide two very decadent desserts- one was a red bean ice cream with creme brulee, and the second was .. I suppose a coconut ball with some coffee ice cream. I'm not a huge fan of dessert myself (one is usually enough and typical for an omakase, where you're really going for the savory foods) and it was surprising to get so much dessert. This place is great for a quiet evening with a cozy ambience. I really felt like I felt a little extra peaceful just being here. The fish was incredible fresh and very well made, and we were able to enjoy so many different items! Everything from the rolls to the single pieces of nigiri and sashimi were so delicious! They also gave us a "muse bouche" to start the meal that was really well done! I think the presentation of their fish was something else that I noticed they put extra effort into - really lovely. I think something they're known for is this dessert shaped like an egg (the "coconut sphere"), where yo crack the outer "shell" and there is a gooey dessert underneath. This has definitely made it to my list of favorite restaurants in Boston. I have heard great things about this place and once I realized where I was (it was a surprise dinner) - I immediately had high expectations for this place. Everything that we ordered was absolutely delicious. Even the cocktails that were recommended by our waiter was good! We started with the Wagyu beef ishiyaki and crispy pork belly - which was a great start. The beef came out with a hot stone pot and they instructed us 8 seconds on each side - worth every dollar! The pork belly just melted in my mouth, it was crispy but not charred and fatty but great ratio between fat and meat and the meat was flavorful and not dry - I still dream about that dish. We then got the mini salmon tacos - bite size and hand made shell, such a interesting integration of guacamole with asian food! And the spicy tuna atop crispy rice - bite size yums! Then there was a thin slices of fish over a nice 'salad' - don't remember the fish but it tasted good! We just wanted to try everything so we also got the chefs choice of sushi and sashimi - a mixture of $15 pieces, my fave being the fatty tuna (toro)! Oiishi is a nice, elegantly darkly lit japanese and sushi spot with premium prices and service to match the ambience. The food however did not hit on all cylinders. The handmade gyoza were a standout for juicy filling and nice pan fried wrappers. The Hamachi kama was average but needed the traditional ponzu dipping sauce on the side in addition to on top. We also had the crispy rice tuna and salmon on fire which was a bit gimmicky (and pricey) but good. The sashimi was nice and most of the nigiri was good but the botan ebi (one of my fave dishes everywhere) fried shrimp head was served not hot as it should or even room temp but actually chilled making it an obvious prepare ahead item instead of freshly fried. Same with the unagi. It should be recently torched or broiled and served a little warm yet it was also chilled. This is not acceptable at any sushi place especially with the prices charged here. The sesame ice cream was icy and not creamy but the flavor was good. read more

So glad we decided to spend our 3 year anniversary here. The ambiance was super chill and the service is impeccable. Our server (I think his name was Adam) knew the menu perfectly. We are pretty indecisive people, but he was super helpful with his recommendations from sake (get the jumani demon slayer) to dessert. We usually opt out of dessert when we go out because we always get wicked stuffed before. However, all the dishes are extremely light and clean...yet so savory...and we still happily had room for dessert. THE COCONUT SPHERE.....y'all this was amazing. First off, we had very rude service from the moment we entered. Our waitress did not smile or make us feel welcome here in any way. She definitely had an attitude. This was our first time at Oishii. I've honestly have never been treated this rudely at a restaurant. We were dressed nicely and being polite as usual. As soon as we were seated downstairs, we ordered shortly and the food came out fairly quickly. I've eaten sushi and asian cuisine across Asia, and Oishii was generally not impressive. The two of us shared: Salmon on Fire (5/5): when I saw pictures of this, I knew we had to get it. I enjoyed the seasoning and the whole presentation with the fire. Definitely order! Wagyu Beef (4/5): i forgot which one we ordered, but they gave us a hot stone to cook it on ourselves. It was pretty good! Chef's Choice Sashimi (2/5): definitely not worth $95 for 20 pieces. Not worth it! I've had much better fish elsewhere in Boston We weren't full so ended up ordering another set of sushi/sashimi. Again, it wasn't anything special just overpriced. We weren't planning on ordering drinks originally, but were so fed up with the service that we needed to, haha. We ordered a few of the highball (whisky cocktail), a fruity cocktail, and of course sake. The cocktails were decent. The sake they recommended was very aromatic and smooth! Because of the poor service, we literally walked around the restaurant to find someone to give us the drink menu. Also, our waters were constantly empty. An AMAZING meal! I've been in Boston for about 1.5 years, and my boyfriend is a Bostonian (born and raised) and this is hands down - our favorite!! My husband and I have been going to Oishii every time we visit Boston from NY (which is at least once or twice a year since Oishii was at their original location.) We have had no issues splurging at the far more expensive sibling because we think the food has been truly fantastic. However, on our last visit, the service was not on par with a fine dining experience. We ordered a number of a la carte dishes for sharing, one of them Wagyu on a hot stone and another the salmon on fire. The pacing of the meal was horrendous. We had numerous plates put out at once making it feel rushed even though we were paying over $400 for the meal. The worse was at the end when the Wagyu on a hot stone and salmon on fire were brought out at the same time. We worried that the hot stone would get too cold for cooking so we rushed to eat the Wagyu first while watching the salmon overcook. When we were finally able to eat the salmon, it had been in the fire for so long that, when my chopstick touched it, the meat broke apart and fell into the chemical flames. We had to gently salvage the remaining pieces. I don't usually complain about restaurants but the service was completely unacceptable for a purported fine-dining establishment. Why should my table be so rushed that we had our dishes brought out in three batches and we were turned over in under 2 hours? I'm about to have my next trip to Boston and I'm sad to say that we won't risk Oishii again. read more

To me this is the best sushi restaurant in Boston. Items on the menu are more expensive than what you would get elsewhere but there is a good reason for it. Whatever you do, do not order the salmon cucumber hand roll. It was a mayo overload. The hamachi rubbed in coffee with sweet potato purée is also not good. My partner and I dropped in late last Friday evening and ordered the Chef Choice Sushi & Sashimi, which came with 15 pieces and totaled $75 each (pre-tax and tip). The pieces were split 5 sushi and 10 sashimi, with five different fish varieties for each (the sashimi came in pairs for each fish). While the fish was fresh, the service was very slow. And although we weren't particularly bothered by the service (or lack thereof), I'm giving this review 3 stars because both my partner and I were disappointed by the duplicate sashimi offerings. For dessert we ordered the Red Bean Creme Brulee, which was good but not amazing. The dish was served with a layer of red bean below the custard base and a scoop of red bean ice cream on the side. The caramelized sugar on top was slightly over-burnt but did not really impact the overall taste. Overall, we were both pretty underwhelmed. We were originally planning on coming back at a later date to try the omakase, but did not leave feeling very impressed. Therefore, DO NOT come on the weekend, expecting this deal! They have a few different options that are either $20 or $30. This is probably one of the best 'bang for your buck' deals out there. I chose the $20 option, and was VERY satisfied with my meal! It comes with miso soup, 2 sushi rolls, seaweed salad, broccoli salad, agedashi tofu, tempura, soba noodles, and cod. Mini plates of everything, that make for a complete and filling meal. The cod was DELICIOUS. I love getting this at Japanese restaurants because it is always cooked and marinated so perfectly. There was nothing in the set that I did not enjoy. If you want good quality Japanese food, then come here.
