    Hand rolls

Solid spot for sushi, very fresh fish, good ambiance and great service. Price is slightly on the higher end but they do accept Inkind. Here's what we ordered: - edamame - beef sukiyaki (4/5): came with raw egg to dip, slightly on the saltier side but rice helped - 4 omakase hand rolls (5/5): favorite of the night, all 4 were different and incredibly tasty (and beautiful!) - rainbow roll (4/5): for $27 I'd expect something more than artificial crab meat stuffed inside, pretty good otherwise - roppongi roll (4/5): very fresh and unique, light. Went well against the saltier sukiyaki Next time we're back we would order more hand rolls and try some nigiris.

As a big fan of Omakase next door, Okane is an everyday answer to the same high quality sushi. They cut from the same fish as next door, and have a more budget-friendly chef's counter omakase! It's not a big place inside, and they get very crowded, so I'd avoid going at peak times for more personalized service and to secure a seat. Their signature roll with A5 Wagyu is out of this world, with the right balance of salt and richness, all the small plates and drinks I've tried have been great, and you can never go wrong with a good omakase.

After a fun coding competition, my daughter was seriously craving sushi. The event food was mini muffins for breakfast and sandwiches for lunch, she needed something way better. Thankfully, my brother (who comes here often) made reservations for us, and it did not disappoint. Service was great from start to finish -- friendly, attentive, and welcoming without being overbearing. Here's what we ordered: * Kakuni - So flavorful and the pork was incredibly tender, practically falling apart. One of my favorites of the night. * Tonkatsu - The pork was good but not great. It came with miso soup, which was solid, though we've had better elsewhere. * Hamachi Belly - Very good. Fresh and buttery. * Beni Toro - Also very good. Rich, melt-in-your-mouth texture. * Townsend Roll - Good overall, but my daughter wasn't a fan of the shiso leaf on it. * Dragon Roll - Good and nicely balanced. * Kaisen Don - Not sure of the full variety of fish included, but it was pretty good. What stood out most was the rice -- perfectly seasoned and delicious. I found myself finishing the rice even after the sashimi was gone. * Oysters (chef's style) - Topped with uni, quail egg, ponzu, green onion, and caviar. Absolutely amazing. This was a standout. We were also lucky enough to find parking right across the street, which feels rare in SF! Staff was very friendly, service was smooth, and overall it was a great experience. Definitely will be back again.

Despite the last experience, we decided to give this place a second chance, and it was amazing! The nigiri we ordered were all very high quality, treated with care and delicious. The shrimp nigiri even came with a fried head and that head was amazing, highly recommended! Kakuni was tender and flavorful, udon was also pretty good. They have a wide selection of rolls and they all seem pretty unique. Servers were pretty attentive, atmosphere was casual but cozy. And most importantly....easy parking!! Definitely will be back:)

Came here for my birthday dinner! Everything was incredible. We talked to the sushi chefs while waiting for our food and they were so happy to answer all our questions. Started with the crispy rice and hamachi crudo, which were sublime. Otoro sashimi was melt in your mouth. Sashimi set was so fresh and buttery. Roppongi was super unique it had no rice and was wrapped in cucumber. Rainbow spider roll was really crunchy and so pretty too. Finished with the saba shioyake (grilled mackerel) which came with miso soup! So happy and so full Service was fast at the beginning then slowed down when it started to get busy. Perfect lighting and loved the traditional modernesque decor of the whole place. Loved being able to watch the sushi chefs in action at the counter.

The food at Okane was very good, the fish was really fresh and came out in a timely manner. The ribeye beef skewers were not good, the meat was tough. The chicken karage was also not very good - it wasn't crispy and didn't have much flavor. The miso black cod was delicious, very flaky and seasoned very well. We ordered 2 types of toro, and a variety of sashimi, and multiple handrolls (also very good.) Service was very attentive, the waiters refilled our waters multiple times. The ambiance felt casual but good. I came here for my birthday and while I was glad to have dined here, I don't believe I would return.

    Hand rolls (chutoro and eel)

Walking in, I was seated at the bar near the entrance. Further into the restaurant there are a lot more tables for larger parties, but I went for dinner by myself. It was a bit awkward that they handed me a Happy Anniversary card. I had forgotten that I had put down my ex and my anniversary for the day after I came here so... I was a bit confused initially. But I guess they were trying to be nice. The chef's style oysters were delicious! Super fresh oyster with uni and quail egg and caviar and a little bit of a spicy sauce that lingers in the mouth afterwards. The omakase nigiri had select pieces that were quite delicious but 2 pieces I remember thinking, this is kind of chewy or had a bit of tendon on it. I don't care for eel, but the chutoro and eel temaki hand rolls were delicious. I think it's reasonably priced (at least compared to its sister restaurant next door) if you don't feel like spending $300 pp on omakase.

Had a great valentines experience here. We went for the prix fixe menu and every course was delicious. The service was lovely, they were understanding that the traffic caused us to be a little bit late, and they have a cocktail menu which isn't as common in SF at sushi restaurants. It's small but nicely designed inside and feels cosy. The only thing I would have liked would have been if they'd wiped the tables between courses.

This place is absolutely mind-blowing... Wow! This review took me a minute to write because I honestly didn't want to gatekeep something this good! If you're visiting San Francisco, this spot is 100% worth the trip! No matter where you're coming from. The service? Next-level. The ambiance.. amazing! Huge shoutout to Uri, Kelly, Robert, and Jeff for making our experience unforgettable!! not once... but TWICE. This place has officially earned a permanent spot on our travel itinerary. If you go (and trust me, you should), do not miss the chef's counter omakase, it's pure magic. And my absolute favorite dish? The hamachi, negi, cucumber, and A5 wagyu topped with caviar and literal SPARKLING GLITTER!!! (Sorry, Marissa... but the secret's out now). Run, don't walk.

Okane is spectacular. As a Japanese food connoisseur, this place is special. The fish is outstanding, prices are fair, very high fashion, and the service was great. Amazing place to go if you are looking for proper sushi done the right way...

Leftover shrimp tempura pieces pulled out from our roll
    David H.

We were here a few years ago and enjoyed it, with the nice decor inside that makes you feel welcomed. We ordered the tempura with shrimp and veggies. My first bite of a fried veggie was crisp and crunchy, very good. When I bit into the shrimp tempura, the shrimp was missing that firmness and texture that I expected, it felt powdery, definitely not shrimp! We brought it to their attention and waitress immediately offered to ask the chef to remake them. She explained that they have changed their shrimp supplier and maybe that's why. Our order of dragon roll also included shrimp tempura, they were the same. We still felt the remade ones were still off, albeit fresh and hot and crunchy on the outside. The friendly waitress gave us a large discount on our check for our troubles, which was greatly appreciated.

Was in the city and craving sushi, so I went to come check this place out. This place was Michelin Guided in 2021 so I had high expectations here. Beef Sukiyaki (4/5): It comes with beef, tofu, vegetables, and noodles. It also comes with a raw egg to dip with on the side. The broth was comforting but a bit too sweet for me. I really love the veggies and tofu that soaked up all the soups the beef was also a bit dry. The rice complemented the soup well. Chefs Oysters (5/5): Omg this was a delicacy. It came with uni, caviar, and quail egg. So much flavor in one! Shishito Peppers (4/5): was never a big fan of it but recommend this if you want a bit of spicy for your appetizer. Tuna Crispy Rice (5/5): I first thought this was going to be a typical tuna crispy rice, but the deep fried seaweed caught me by surprise. It included tempura flakes topped with a mountain of spicy tuna. They also added sauce that added great flavor. Shirokane Roll (5/5): This is similar to the Lion King roll, but this one has real snow crab. the snow crab definitely added a unique texture to it. Shibuya Roll (4/5): This includes salmon on top of the California roll. The lemon was a bit much as it overpowered the taste of the other fish. Shoutout to Gigi and Mariza for amazing service and recommendations!

During a recent visit to Okane in San Francisco, I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. As someone from Hawaii, where we have incredible Japanese cuisine, I didn't expect to be impressed. But Okane truly delivered Michelin-star quality. The fish, especially the bluefin tuna, was incredibly fresh and exquisite. The menu at Okane features a delightful range of traditional and refined Japanese comfort food. From shareable vegetable, fish, and meat courses to rice, noodles, nigiri sushi, and innovative rolls like the Shinjuku--a combination of snow crab, avocado, and A5 Wagyu beef--there's something for every palate. Overall, I highly recommend Okane for anyone seeking a memorable Japanese dining experience in San Francisco.

Is Okane aware of what has gluten and what does not on their menu? Many rice vinegars, ponzu and soy sauces have gluten (wheat/barley-based ingredients). Or does the menu denote GF?…

We stood in the front with multiple workers seeing us, but wasn't acknowledged for a full five minutes (it's completely empty). We're seated and figured they would allow us to start happy hour because it was from 5-6pm (which, what a short HH!) and we ordered around 4:50pm. Nope. Waitress took out her phone and denied it. Okay.... Waited an extra ten AND THEN ordered food. Got the nigiri sampler and added the uni and toro. That was a mistake, because for a whole $20 addtl., the sampler was so lackluster. The tamago was oddly colored and the rice was... chewy? We left the crab one because... unsure what kind of frozen crab that was. Meanwhile, this whole time we're waiting for our HH drinks while other people are receiving theres. Mind you, we ordered first. Also, I ordered a Sapporo which was a CAN. Had to bother multiple staff to get my can. Also... $5 HH special from regular $7 price? Idk... We also ordered the HH karaage and gyoza which came with a curry sauce that wasn't too bad, and some agadashi tofu that I actually liked. Ordered the chicken skins or Tori Kawa, and those were mediocre. Tried to order more HH items but the wait staff almost completely ignored us. Soon enough, HH is over! Worst happy hour experience ever. Never coming back to this place and recommend others to find another spot for sushi since there's waaayyyyy better spots in the city than this.

We lucked out without a reservation and showed up the moment they opened. However, I noticed this place has A LOT of reservations; therefore, they did give us a time limit (we had a good hour and 30 mins!). If you're looking for an authentic Japanese izakaya experience, Rintaro is definitely worth checking out. I've been to Japan before, and actually felt like the food we ate was just as good as what you would get in Japan, but more expensive, haha. I also love that their menu focuses on traditional Japanese izakaya dishes rather than just sushi. Everything is meant to be shared, making it a fun dining experience where you can try a little bit of everything. FOOD: 9/10 SERVICE: 9/10 AMBIANCE: 10/10 FOOD: 9/10 The food really showcases the craftsmanship that goes into Japanese cooking. From the handmade udon to the charcoal-grilled skewers that we ordered, every dish felt thoughtfully prepared. I especially appreciated that nothing felt overly complicated. The flavors were simple, balanced, and let the quality of the ingredients shine. The only reason I'm giving it a 9 instead of a perfect 10 is that a few dishes didn't completely wow me for the price, but overall it was a fantastic meal. SERVICE: 9/10 The staff was knowledgeable about the menu and happy to answer questions or offer recommendations. The restaurant gets busy, but service still felt attentive throughout the meal without making us feel rushed. They do recommend ordering everything at once, as they do run out of things due to the high volume of customers. AMBIANCE: 10/10 The first thing that stood out to me was the ambiance. From the moment you walk in, the warm wood interior, open kitchen, and charcoal grill make you feel like you've stepped into Japan. It has such a cozy and intimate atmosphere that's perfect for a date night or catching up with friends. Rintaro is definitely more of a special occasion spot than an everyday dinner. The quality is there, but because the menu is made up of small plates, the bill can add up pretty quickly. That said, I think it's worth experiencing at least once if you're looking for an authentic izakaya in San Francisco. Overall, I'd definitely come back. The atmosphere alone makes it memorable, and I love that Rintaro focuses on traditional Japanese comfort food instead of being another sushi restaurant. For food, we started with the Teba No Karaage, which had a perfectly crispy exterior and juicy, flavorful meat. We also ordered the San Ten Mori, and the fish was very fresh. We especially enjoyed the yuzu wasabi that came with the dish, which added a nice kick and complemented the fish really well. We also tried the Chiizu Tori Katsu. The chicken itself was juicy, but I wished both the chicken and the cheese had a little more flavor. Most of the flavor came from the sauce on the side. I was also a bit disappointed by the snowy cabbage dressing, although that may just be because I'm used to the dressing being on the sweeter side. One thing that really stood out was the warm and welcoming service. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. Overall, we had a great time and would definitely come back to try the skewers next time.

Yes, it's an izakaya, but we found ourselves struggling to continue eating the plates since it felt so heavy. Sure, maybe we didn't order the right stuff, but lots of the menu items are deep fried, stir-fried, or grilled also. We enjoyed the cumin lamb skewers and the negitoro the best! I've been to plenty of Japanese/Ramen spots and I've been running into the issue where I say I have a soy allegry and there is an assumption that I have a gluten issue (I do not have a gluten issue). I noticed yelp said they have soy-free options and thus called on Friday thinking it might be a bad idea as they're usually busy.. It was defintely hard for the person to hear a bit when they picked up. The staff did relay something about gluten free noodles.. Anyways, they said they could swap out any of the soy soups for salt (but soy can encompass a lot of things so I still wasn't feeling super confident but we're going to give it a go). We go and I asked which 4 of the soups I was eyeballing don't have soy - the staff said they can accomodate and replace any of the soy soups with a salt broth. After we ordered, the staff came back and checked in to make sure that my partner also didn't have an allergy. And my dish came out, they told me there was no egg as its marinated in soy - perfect to me. I'm glad that was caught as not every establishments can account for everything. - Now I have a spot to (more safely) eat ramen! - I advise that if you do have an food allergy, do talk to the staff, and address your concerns such as cross contamination etc. I had a great experience, but I do find that because its not so regulated or understood and there is lack of education amongst the food/resturant industry - you always need to advocate for yourself and there is always a risk. I'm very apperciative of the staff here.

Okonomoyaki tater tots - 8.5/10 from a potato lover!! This does have some sort of cheese on it so beware if you don't eat it Hamachi Hand Roll - 9/10 SO GOOD. I think the rice is mixed in with soy sauce. It was super flavorful which I wasn't expecting Scallop Hand Roll - 8/10, the yuzu on top was absolutely delicious & scallop was very soft. Kobe Skewer - 7/10, it was good but nothing extraordinary. It'll hit the spot if you like meat skewers Yuzu Tori Skewer - 7/10, same as the kobe skewer, but the yuzu on top was delicious Niku Ramen - 8/10, good portion & very very flavorful. I'm glad that they gave a lot of meat in this. I shared this & they provided an extra bowl without me asking :) It's also not super spicy. Hokkaido Milk Pudding - 8/10, the pudding itself was so good but the sauce was a little too sweet for me. However, my partner has a sweet tooth and loved it :) Will totally come again, everything was so yummy and so glad to have tried it!

They have a simple menu that has a selection of small bites, yakitori, and other dishes to enjoy and you basically circle the ones you want and hand it back. Service was fairly quick and attentive, friendly, and helpful with figuring out the ordering. We enjoyed each item, especially the short rib and chicken thighs. ----TL;DR---- Pros: easy to get to location-wise, fast and friendly staff, good selection on menu, fresh and flavorful meats Cons: none Bottom Lind: if you are craving Japanese pub food like Yakitori, come here, it was great. The center literally was a bar and I could tell it was meant as a nighttime eatery. Their menu is composed pretty much of some izakaya type items and yakitori. I ordered only yakitori. The skewers were a bit pricey- 5-9$ each. But the quality was really good. Chicken heart and thigh were ultra juicy. Beef tongue was so soft and tender. Meat ball was ultra soft. Loved everything- no misses. Really surprised me. I highly recommend folks stop by for the skewers. Other than price I have no gripes at all! Just be prepared for the wait- with an empty restauraunt I waited 30 minutes.

Ambiance was so cute very intimate but not much conversational privacy. Ordered the chicken, wagyu steak, beef tongue, okra, eel, scallop, and pork belly skewers. Also had the yuzu cheesecake. All skewers were juicy and delicious 10/10 every item was a hit. Wagyu was soft and not too welldone, scallop was flavorful and soft, chicken was so juicy, tender, and had strong flavor. Yuzu cheesecake - small light fluffy with a light caramel like sauce - emptied the plate 10/10 Would definitely come again.

Okay back to the restaurant itself. Two words : hella cozy. We were jammed in this tiny corner next to another table of three. So much so, that we may should've just considered combining our space. And that would've been totally fine. Why? Because the food is super worth it, and the vibe is friendly and welcoming. Moku is totally cool and whatever the kitchen is grilling will have your mouth watering. Grilled chicken thighs - yup. order two. pork belly - that glaze. yum. bacon wrapped mushrooms - of course it's gonna be good. it's bacon wrapped for goodness sake. croquette - deep fried mash potatoes? yes, please. chicken karaage - much like the croquette but chicken instead. I regret not ordering the chicken meatballs. Although, it does give me another reason to return. Great spot. Good fun. You will mostly likely devour whatever you order at lightening speed. And don't sleep on their beer and sake selection. Lastly, tip your servers well. They're ninja-like service will make it seem like the food and drink are magically appearing while the empty plates and glasses are simultaneously disappearing.
