Me and my husband went there Sunday to grab breakfast while we wait on my tire to be changed at Sam's. I walked inside and the person at the register asked me to step up to wait to be seated. I move up every time a person was taking care of. Well in the process of me standing there a gentleman walks in and stands behind me. The waitress walks up start talking to him and ask him where would he like to be seated and continue to walk and talk to him as she was sitting him. oh..before I go further.. I'm black and the gentleman was white and so was the waitress. My husband walks in and asked me why are you still standing here.. I said no one has come to seat me and the lady at the register said go up some. I said ma'am I did and the gentleman that just walked in was standing behind me and the waitress walked up to him and seated him... she finally comes back and seats us..our waitress come take our liquid order and bring me my water and 10 mins went by and never bought my husband his soda... by than another gentleman comes in gets seated ..he walks in without moving an inch from the door and of course he's white. Takes his seat and the same waitress gets his liquid order and than start taking his order but haven't taken our order or bought my husband soda yet. By than I'm telling my husband let's go. I have been a customer of the Tucker Old Hickory House for about 30 years. They do serve good food. Today, 4/19/2022, I arrived about 10:15AM and ordered an Old Fashioned Breakfast. The young server was very nice and placed my order. The, I assume, loud mouthed lead cook immediately starting berating the server. I have witnessed his mouth berating a server many times in the past. In any case at 11:15 my breakfast had not arrived. The server had apologized for the delay. I spoke with the manager on duty, expressed my dissatisfaction with the kitchen, tipped the young server $5 and left. A long wait for an absent breakfast. Good straightforward breakfast place. It is modest home style cooking. I usually get an egg and cheese biscuit with cheddar cheese & onion potatoes (also known as home fries). I don't like their orange juice because it is from concentrate so I usually stick with water. My wife tried the pancakes on our most recent visit. They were very good buttermilk pancakes and I would consider ordering them in the future. The only downside is that the short stack comes with two pancakes with a diameter of roughly 9-10 inches. My wife ate one (with my help) along with some scrambled eggs and bacon. They get busy on weekend mornings but they don't take terribly long. It does usually appeal to an older crowd and the interior is nothing special. But breakfast is tried and true. read more

My roommate had been raving about this place for awhile, so since i just happened to be sending some packages off at the next door post office i figured id go for a bite. He had also just watched a Man vs Food episodes with ribs so that was on his mind too. Entering the place it wasn't very full and while we said hello, nobody greeted us. We took a seat at the nearest booth. The booth was very small and sofas were falling off. The table was fairly dusty and windows uncleaned. They really wanted to go for a homely look, but at least cleanup the place. We ordered the ribs, the Country Boy steak with gravy and a few side items. The waitress got us water a few times, but wasn't particularly chatty. Lets start with the sides: Potatoes- Decent Some meat shit- Decent Beans- Bland and flavorless Corn- Bland, flavorless, and soggy Now onto the meat. For $8 i wasn't expecting much and of course, it tasted like the price; extremely chewy and crunchy and got cold fast. Tasted microwaved basically and the gravy overpowered all other taste. Okay and I know steak smothered in gravy is a deep south Georgia thing but really guys? I couldn't even finish it and instead tried the ribs. Ribs were the same. Quite small even for Babyback Ribs and not that juicy. Clean the place up. COOK the food; don't microwave it. I really don't mind waiting in the uncomfortable wooden booths for an extra 10 minutes if I know the meal is well prepared. Greet your customers, make them feel at home since you specialize in the homely look. I'd rant a little louder so they can hear it but everyone there is 100 years old so they probably wouldn't hear me! Will not be coming back here again, even if the price is much lower than anywhere else. read more

From outside to inside and in every dish this place satisfies! Went for breakfast, wanted to go back for bbq lunch! This is a walk back in time to a southern bbq diner full of families and friends. A hot basket of huge perfectly fluffy crispy buttery biscuits is delivered to the table as you wait... I had the sugar cured ham with two eggs over medium, it came with white sausage specked gravy on the side as well and I dug in the gravy with the biscuit before the server took his last finger off of the plate. I've passed by this restaurant for many years, and just tried it on Friday. It is an institution around Northlake and you can smell the great BBQ from the street. We really enjoyed the catfish, ribs and BBQ beef. The other BBQ stuff we had was just ok. The ribs are really nice cause the sauce is baked on. The sides were ok as well. I think most of the sides are frozen. Nothing stood out to us as amazing. The cornbread was good. Service was very friendly. They took care of us well, like you would expect a southern restaurant to. We wanted to have the breakfast, but I think they stop that at noon. I probably would prefer to go to Community Q if distance/time weren't an issue. read more

We were greeted by a very friendly and outgoing hostess, getting me excited for the meal ahead. We had the option for both lunch or breakfast. When our waitress arrived her enthusiasm and knowledge did not match that of the hostess. She incorrectly told me which veggies were cooked with onions. I have an allergy, this is a big deal. I ordered a sandwich meal, and it came with 2 sides. I had yams and black eyed peas- though I was unable to eat the peas. The BBQ is ketchup based. Pretty good. I've eaten a lot of BBQ, but as a Carolina girl, never the red sauce ketchup kind. The BBQ was not over sauced, but I'd have liked a little more meat on the sandwich. My friend had the sandwich as well, but with black eyed peas and Brunswick stew. He said it was very good. This place has been around for ages, and is clearly a bit of an "institution". Some really good BBQ and amazing sides. Once we tasted the Mac and cheese we got for our daughter we all were mad we didn't order it. That ended when we tried our own sides and baked beans, Brunswick stew and potato salad were great. The only thing is we wish the fries had a little more seasoning but next time we will just ask. It was also nice to see a waitress know her customers when they came in. The service is a little slow but that is only because they like most restaurants are short staffed but work hard to make sure all your needs are met. read more

So I've pretty much grown up with this restaurant. Whether it was meals with the family as a kid, Monday morning breakfast with the youth group as a teen or the normal I'm starving I need food now as an adult. So breakfast... If you like good, hearty, southern breakfast this is the spot. Everything is on point. Biscuits, eggs, gravy, sausage, ham, country fried steak. You cannot go wrong with anything for breakfast here. Other meals - I haven't eaten a lot of other meals here but I will grab a rack of ribs and their Brunswick stew to go. If I'm feeling like ribs minus the difficulty of heading somewhere else. But their B'wick stew is fantastic. Honestly probably the best I ever have. Parking is more than adequate and service is ok. We have been to the Hickory House numerous times but this time was different. The service was chaotic, the food was slow and there seem to be no organization. We waited much longer than usual for our food as well as the other customers around us were waiting. Then it became apparent that the owner and her family were also in the restaurant pulling all the servers to their table and making very odd requests. That says a lot on how they feel about paying customers. We were pushed to the back while they were being catered with red carpet service. I can't see myself patronizing this establishment any longer with owners that number 1 come in during peak hours and to pull several servers to wait on them. Obviously owners like this don't respect the customers or the employees. Such a shame... I pray for respect, better wages and an understanding boss because these have proven to not be so. read more

Excellent food - I've eaten here (or done takeout) many times since I moved to Tucker last year. Meat is done well, great selection of side items, all good. The one thing that needs improvement is - the staff on the counter/cashier area is not very friendly. I know they're usually busy but it seems counter-productive not to be welcoming. Yay!! I had the chance to stop and eat lunch here today. I had been craving it for a long time and since I was in the area, why not?! I ordered the pulled pork sandwich and side of squash casserole. I also ordered a sweet tea to top it off! It was all delicious!! Big helping of squash casserole and with yummy cheese blended in. The sandwich was big enough and the sauce was great. This is truly southern style cooking AND eating. It's a very average restaurant that is also more quiet and laid back than noisy and crowded. I believe this restaurant chain is also famous. There is a scene in Smokey and the Bandit that was filmed there when Smokey comes out with attached toilet paper, I think they called it the Choke n Puke on the movie. Look it up on Google. Seriously, this place has the best barbeque in Tucker, if not all of Atlanta! They also serve breakfast and lunch items that are not prepared on the pit and everything is absolutely delicious. I started coming here for a work events where I would order large portions of items for pick-up to serve approximately 40 employees for breakfast. The smoked bacon is always a hit, and the biscuits are huge and tasty, the sausage gravy and grits are also devoured. The staff has always been super friendly and accommodating and as this is a large order, they make sure I have place settings, plastic ware and plenty of jelly and butter. But, personally I come here for everything else. The baby back ribs are fall off the bone amazing, the barbeque sauce is on point and their sides are incredible. A charming, friendly, family atmosphere with wonderful customer service. You won't leave disappointed. read more

Wow, so many dumb reviews on here for OHH. I only have one minor negative so I'll get that out of the way now: the decor could use a little freshing up. Now the positives. The sauce: their sauce is the best in the world. I mean the entire world, Northern or Southern Hemisphere. The Ribs: Always perfect. Seriously, if you want something that I guarantee you will love try the ribs. The Sliced Pork: Their sliced pork is so delicious I have kind of lost interest in anybody's chopped pork. Brunswick Stew: As far as I'm concerned, NOBODY else even makes Brunswick stew. Breakfast: All the reviewers seem to recognize the excellence of their breakfast. Service: I've never had a problem with service in the decades that I've been a customer. (Since I was a boy and I'm 61 now). I'm a NC Tar Heel so I have my own idea of BBQ and I've found very few acceptable places to scarf good pig around Atlanta. The Old Hickory House is one of my faves and when you're around Northlake this is a good idea. Breakfast is great and lunch is too. Dinner times I'd go somewhere else. The character of the place is a big part of what I like. It's totally brown inside with woodgrain everything. Everything that's not brick that is. Earth tones to the extreme. Lots of wear and tear in the old place including the help and most of the customers. I call it charm, and enjoy the change of pace from the styleless chain joints. The chopped Bbq sandwich and fries I had today was excellent, (grading on the GA curve) and the sweet tea, perfect. Still I need to remember that there's no slaw on the bun as standard equipment so next time I'll order it with some. I enjoy this place and will return again, and again, and for breakfast when I get a chance. read more

I have loved this place for years. Went yesterday and simply was not good or up to snuff. Sliced pork, way too thick, way way too dry and tough. Too much burned or "bark". Service shoddy, something else that was not a pleasant surprise. This was forgettable but will try again. I know I will never get sliced again. Yuck. Another thing, don't be so chintzy with sauce. First time here today. I came to buy Brunswick stew for my mom because she desired it after her appointment. So, I came inside to buy the stew and, regrettably, I bought a rib sandwich plate with "garlic" bread and cole slaw. The stew looked so much better than the baby back ribs; hence, the two star rating and also for the coleslaw. I will share photos of what came to me. The baby back ribs were lukewarm and somewhat dry, definitely NOT juicy and fresh. The garlic bread had a faint garlic flavor and the butter was more oil than cream. I now assume they used margarine to toast the two bread slices. The extra BBQ sauce in the cup tastes like ketchup mixed with something odd. It was disgusting and I only tasted it once. The coleslaw was the only satisfying food on the plate followed by the "garlic" bread then the ribs. The sauce on the ribs tasted different than the sauce in the cup. The Brunswick stew was okay, not great. The flavor was semi-smoky and the corn included looked like canned corn but the onions were fresh. I thought when I tasted it, 'I can cook better than this.' The stew includes chicken pieces, shredded pork and probably another meat along with stewed tomatoes, onions and canned corn. It needed seasonings besides a little bit of smoked meat. The female who registered my order gave me my change but not my receipt; she left it on the counter which made me think an employee will need it to call me when my order is ready. But no, I was wrong. With me being there for the first time, and I told the cashier and server at the take-out counter, I assumed they'd be more helpful. I was told crackers or corn muffins were for the stew. I had to ask for napkins for the stew and I forgot about the crackers. I won't return and I regret spending my money on the lamp-heated rib plate, and I wouldn't recommend to anyone that likes good-tasting food. read more

I ordered the three meat plate and picked beef, ribs and pulled pork so they had 3 chances to get something right yet they failed miserably. ALL the meat was old dry and unseasoned. Killer baked (oops, Hickory Pit) beans. Awesome bbq sauce - only one flavor but they must make it themselves and serve it warm, no squeeze bottles. The chopped pork was average but came to life when topped by the sauce. Ya might even get called Darlin' or Sweety by one of the super-friendly staff. Place made me relax and smile.
