I have driven by this place in a empty run down tiny strip mall for almost a year and finally decided to stop in. My first visit went well so I came back. The 2nd visit the service was poor but the food was ok! Nothing special other than the Brunswick stew. Then for each visit since I have had problems: 1) cold fries; 2) cold Brunswick stew; 3) chewy pork; 4) poor service; 5) no a/c Today the server was attrocious. In her defense she was solo in the entire dining room. This has happened before and the then servers complained about the owner being cheap. Anyways my cold fries were placed at the edge of the table only to be ignored by the server. When I tried speaking to her she walked away. So I walked to the counter only to be "helped" by a young lady who is a moron!! "Did jya want hot onezzz?!?" Plus, they forgot my cole slaw which comes with the #2. So when the replacement fries arrived they were completely undercooked. When I went to pay I asked for the fries to be removed from my bill. I think the owner gave me a fifty cent discount when they cost $2.00. Plus I never got my cole slaw. The real disappointing thing was not one of the three people I spoke to ever apologized. They seemed irritated and offended that someone dared complain. That is except for the moron who was still smiling at air!! So I left and will never return........... The average age of the people that go here is 75. The interior of the place is musky and dark and looks like it was last cleaned in the 80s. The food is pretty bad. Below average. This is like some dystopian version of BBQ. It technically has all of the things you need, but manages to make them bland and the sauce feel like sludge.They don't even have BBQ sauce at the table, you get a small portion of it (it's more like a broth) with your entre. My food came out -no joke- 15 minutes after my parents did. Because I had the audacity to order Mac N Cheese. That's really how my waitress framed it. When she offered alternatives, they were out of almost half their sides. Pathetic. As far as I can tell, the waitresses are a mix between mean and sad. Like they've captured you in this surreal web of misery and for a short time you have to live in the same horrifying reality that they do. I'm really glad that this is what has become of the boomer generation. This restaurant is the perfect representation of what they have done to our country. I'm trying to think of other ways to describe how mind meltingly bad this restaurant is, but if you've read this far then you just need to go experience it for yourself. This place is very poorly managed and run by weird old people. I live in Decatur and thought this restaurant could be a nice place where I meet up with my parents once a month or so. Boy was I wrong. I get that most BBQ places in Atlanta are probably double the average price point of this, but honestly anything below the quality of a Burnt Fork BBQ I would say just do it yourself. I have NO IDEA how this place gets such RAVE REVIEWS!! But my last visit may be just that!! The cashier is great but she does know me!! I went for dinner on a Sunday night and the place was busy. I ordered the pit cooked baked beans which were delicious. I also ordered the Mac and Cheese and the Squash Casserole which was very disappointing!! The Mac and Cheese was dried out and totally lacking in flavor and cheese. The Squash Casserole was just plain flavorless!! As if that weren't bad enough my server had an attitude from hell and hardly stopped by so I had to send out a search party for her!! I was polite the entire meal but not once did she say " you're welcome" EVER!! No matter how many times I said " Thank You" She did not crack a smile once and seemed like she REALLY DID NOT WANT TO BE THERE!! I don't know why all the negative reviews. A BBQ restaurant is sort of rustic to start - I mean no tuxes or reservations but the breakfast (I'm there more for that than the BBQ) is wonderful. Try the cheese omelet with a side of crisp bacon and biscuits that are to die for. Invariably I take a biscuit order home with me to tuck in my freezer and bring out when I need it. Once, my sister and I did pick up lunch (BBQ and sides) for my brother and sis-in-law and it was superb. The baked bean are exceptional! My brother is the type who will say when food isn't great and he didn't open his mouth except to shove more food in. Yeah, it's in a strip mall. And yeah, the waitresses are a little crusty. But, DAMN!!! They have been working there since God was a boy. I have been dining at one Old Hickory House or another for 39 years and they have always been solid. The key is to eat there for lunch mid-week. The BBQ will be fresh-cooked and the stew won't be cooked down to tar. Your best bet is to get the sliced outside pork sandwich. Perfectly smoked pork with just enough "bark" from the open pit cooking. Pair that with a fresh cup of the most perfect Brunswick stew and a large sweet tea. That, my friend, is the food of the Gods! It's not fair for me to give this place a review. It is one of the first restaurants I remember eating at, so I am EXTREMELY biased about this place, I'll go ahead and put that out there. I've been eating here since 1978 and they do no wrong. The burger here is better than most BBQ joint burgers, but burgers are not why you are here so not much emphasis is put on their burgers. But compared to most restaurants, their burger is top notch! The bacon and cheese is melted into one big heap on top of it, and always cooked to perfection! But it is the hot dogs I crave for when I come here! I love them so much I have asked them to cook me one when I go for breakfast sometimes, and they love me enough that they usually do it! ;) Why are they so good? They deep fry them! I still feel the slight sting of stupidity when I realize that I did not think of that on my own, but I'm over it the second I bite into one and then blammo! It's gone, and I am sad in a strange, but satisfying kind of way. And their breakfast is so good, there are often lines out the door for their famous fluffy cat head biscuits, pancakes eggs and bacon, just a good old fashioned country breakfast. The BBQ omelette is quite tasty with a little sauce on it. Their BBQ is great too! They have only one sauce, but they make it and it is quite good! Since the 50's I've loved the Old Hickory House they are in this tucker location serving classic que and stew. I love the pork platter half inside, half outside. A woman in my office raved about it, so I decided that this would be my stop this morning to pick up some breakfast. I'm so glad I did! This location and the one in Dunwoody are the only location left of what was a chain of restaurants around town in the 70s and 80s. Other reviewers think it looks dirty and the decor is tired? Sure, but it's a BBQ restaurant. If you want a clean BBQ restaurant, go to Sonny's. If you want good food, look for dirty but popular places like OHH. I like their pork. It's not the best in town (Spiced Right is my favorite here), but it's pretty good. Their sauce is also good (sauce is more of a personal opinion than the meat, so YMMV). The sides can be hit and miss (and canned), and that's one big reason I can't give them five stars. Their breakfast is also excellent, but the lines on weekend mornings can stretch out the door, so it can be hard to get in. read more

Old, old, old favorite that I remember eating at many of the locations here and long gone - they used to be off Flat Shoals, Buford Hwy and Cobb Pkwy and still love them at both the Tucker and Perimeter location. The sauce at the Mr Black locations always had more chopped vadalia sweet yellow onions and brown sugar to it that I loved a 100 times more than that crap that comes from NC or AL - those are toxic waste in comparison! Still eat about once a week at either one and the best part of the Rib Sandwich are the bones for four large GSD furballs who love it as much as I do! Go try, if you have the chance on Weds - call ahead to see if they have the Pan Skillet Fried Chicken - rare but when they have it is as good as Carver's downtown!!! Bigger surprise to me of late is the incredible breakfast and cat head biscuits this place has, if you have the chance - try them....man that was a surprise to me after all these years! We have only been to the Old Hickory House for breakfast, so I cannot rate the barbecue here, but it smells delicious. When in town, we stop in here for some really good country biscuits and gravy. The biscuits are super light and fluffy and even if your order something else, like I did this last time, there are biscuits served to the table so you will never leave hungry. I got the blueberry pancake breakfast, which I would highly recommend. It comes with three regular sized blueberry pancakes that are packed full of fresh blueberries and absolutely delicious. As if that is not enough food to fill you up for the day, the breakfast also comes with two eggs cooked any way you like, two bacon strips and two sausages. We have been here twice and both times, it seemed that 70% of the customers were elderly local folks (who I'm guessing have been coming here for a long time). The ribs were very good and so was the Brunswick Stew. You can get sandwiches with either pulled pork or sliced pork. They have a big selection of vegetable sides. There is nothing fancy about this place and everything seems old and a little grimy...it doesn't look like they have changed the seats, tables, or anything else since the 70's, when Tucker was practically the country. When you walk into this place you notice the smell of smoke, I'm a big fan of smoke and seeing the open pit working away from the dining room is always a plus. The Brunswick stew is good and fork eatable, beans are meaty, ribs are moist and tender, beef was on the dry side, pork was on the dry side too but had a nice piece of bark to make up for it, the bread was nothing special, sauce was not bad for the style. Came on a cold night, really wanted some barbeque I was in the area and this restaurant was the first to pop up. I saw the ratings so I decided to try it out. I placed a to go order for a pulled pork sandwich meal with a side of Mac and cheese and baked beans. My order came really quick, looking inside the bag I was really disappointed with everything. The sandwich didn't have a lot of meat on it and was just thrown together, the sides are reeeeallly small.
