Here's visiting for my seven year anniversary. We decided to stop in to eat at Old Mexico restaurant. The service was fast and the waitress was friendly. However, the chip with salsa that tasted like tomatoes sauce, the tortilla chips were hard as a rock. My husband ordered steak fajitas that had no flavor and my chicken fajitas was so bland. We found Old Mexico in our search for veggie-friendly eateries in Door County in general, and Sturgeon Bay in particular. We visited on a Saturday evening, and were seated right away. We ordered Margaritas (naturally), and the tableside quacamole to share. The quac was freshly prepared to our specifications (light on the onions) from a cart, and it was easily one of the best tableside quacs I've ever had. The Margaritas were great too, definitely try one of those if you haven't already. Compared to many other Mexican restaurants I have tried, they certainly had a larger and more varied vegetarian section on their menu. I also appreciated the option to substitute black beans for the refried ones. So for dinner, I ordered the Enchiladas Vegetariano. I thought they were quite good, the filling included actual veggies and was a bit more interesting than a lot of other places, where the "veggie" might actually just entail beans or cheese. While exploring the area, we decided to have dinner at Old Mexico. We were greeted and seated right away at the loudest table in the restaurant, right next to the kitchen! The place was not busy at all, so we politely asked if we could move. The sweet staff member helping us did not speak much English, so she had to endure my very rusty Spanish. Somehow, we made it work and scored a quieter table. My friend and I each ordered a house margarita, a Diet Pepsi, and water. We also could not resist ordering the table-side guacamole because, honestly, when it is on the menu, you just have to. The server showed up with a tiny rolling cart and made the guacamole right at our table. Adorable! I got to practice my sad Spanish skills again, but hey, it got the job done. I went with the steak fajitas, which arrived fast and sizzling hot. The sides -- guacamole, lettuce, pico, refried beans, and rice -- were all tasty and standard fare. The fajitas were delicious and the portion was huge. I was doing great until I bit into a fattier piece of meat, and let us just say that texture is not my favorite. After that, I threw in the towel. All in all, Old Mexico is a cute spot with decent food and the best table-side guacamole experience. Definitely worth a visit! read more

The prices have drastically gone up to an unreasonable level. They have now decided to buckle and dime you for every little thing. If you want just to swap sauces for a meal it's a 2 dollar charge. If you want ground beef instead of chicken or steak, it's now a 1 dollar charge. I won't be back. Service is subpar. Waited 25 minutes for a refill on my drink and it was slow. Then after the first refill I never got a second one so I had no drink for more then half of my meal. The one reasonable thing is they lowered the radio so it's not blaring anymore. There is a lot more value in other restaurants around.. the food was not great. Very underwhelming for a 16 dollar chicken quesadilla with no beans or rice. read more

I loved the Table Side Guacamole. They even had a small size which was perfect for my husband and I. Their rice was delicious , but their steak was raw and we asked for medium. We asked for cheese on the steak , but didn't get any. We asked to put the shrimp on another plate, but they put it on top of the st al and it did not taste too good. We then asked for tortillas, but the waitress said "no it doesn't come with this meal" ... okay. We ended up just eating and leaving and felt like the place needs better training for their waitresses. read more

We stopped in for a late lunch on a Summer Sunday afternoon. The place was pretty empty and we chose to sit outside since it was so nice. I can't really comment on the interior but it looked big and well decorated. We ordered a small order of the table since guacamole and it was excellent. A nice potion and very flavorful. I felt bad that I didn't have any cash to tip the guy who made it. I ordered the Street Tacos for my meal and was 4 tacos on corn tortillas. Two tacos were with Birria and two with carnitas. They were served the authentic way with cilantro & onions and came with avocado salsa and salsa verde. The Birria was a little dry and not as flavorful as I'd like but it was still good. Our server was very nice and after bringing my wife the wrong dish he offered us a small discount. We were not al all disappointed in his serve and tipped accordingly. read more

If you want authentic Mexican food then this is the place for you. With a charming atmosphere, this restaurant is very relaxed, and the waitstaff was both friendly and helpful. The chips and salsa were delicious while their homemade hot salsa had a great kick to it. My husband had the chicken fajitas and they were both savory and plentiful. My daughter ordered the mucho nachos and was barely able to eat half of them. The homemade guacamole was scrumptious! My son and I both had the chicken burritos and we were able to get them made exactly how we like them. The only downfall was that they were out of sour cream. Though it was a little pricey it was still comparable to other restaurants in town. We would definitely recommend this restaurant if you're look for authentic Mexican food. read more

What an excellent establishment. My husband and I started with seating. This restaurant is huge so finding seating that is comfortable is no issue. We started our food journey with the queso fundido. The portion was impressive. Warm chips, pico de gallo and fresh queso fundido. Next we ordered their original and half strawberry/ half mango margarita. Their medium is huge but perfect; they also have large. Our main dishes were enchiladas super and enchiladas verdes. Both were delicious and hefty portions. This place begs you to leave a review, so I shall. This place was awful. We arrived at 1:45 on a week-day for a late lunch. We were seated and given menus and customary chips/salsa, perhaps 5-6 minutes later we ordered a large order of guac which was made table side. We had a 3-week old who had a "blowout" so his mother slipped to the bathroom to change him. By this time, it was 2:10. We asked to order and proceeded to order off the lunch menu. The waitress, (Odalys), snippily told us that lunch hour was past and after two we'd have to order from the dnner menu. I noted we had ordered an appetizer and were seated well before 2:00 p.m. She persisted. I persisted. Finally asked to see a manager who FINALLY relented. Had he not, I would have walked out -- its ridiculous. I ordered lunch fajitas. 3 of the 4 other adults ordered off the lunch menu. We had plowed through about half our basket of chips/salsa (serving five people) while waiting for the guac. We were told that there would be a charge for more chips. Wait, what? We paid TEN BUCKS for guacamole and they can't provide additional chips without sticking it to us? My entree came out first. First, three small (bigger than street taco/smaller than regular sized) cold tortillas. Then a plate of barely warm/dry chicken (obviously had been sitting) with onions/tomatoes (I requested no peppers) with beans and rice. I eat fajitas all the time and it ALWAYS comes with lettuse, sour cream, cheese and salsa. Not here it doesn't. You get the chicken/onions and 3 (don't ask for more) tortillas. It came with refried beans -- they were fine, but how do you wreck refried beans. It also came with Spanish rice. I took a bite and it tasted like it had cigarette ashes in it. By this time, the other entrees had finally arrived. I asked them to take a taste of their rice and we all agreed that it tasted "ashy". We finally decided it had been sitting and burned giving it that "special flavor". Our drinks were empty and we kept waiting for Odalys to come check on us. She was standing in the back talking with FOUR other bored wait staff. (We could see them.). We tried to flag down two of them when they walked by and they literally did not respond at all though they had to hear us. We were the ONLY people in the restaurant. Finally, Odalys came and we asked her for refills. She didn't ask how the food was. We had to trade out a sour ice tea for a different drink. That was the last we saw of her until she brought the check. No more refills for us. She laid the card machine on the table and walked away. I paid the $100 (for 5 people for lunch) bill and wanted a receipt. She never came back so I had to go get the manager, give him the machine and ask for a receipt. The manager seemed fine, but his staff could not have cared less. We went to the bathroom and there were FOUR signs taped to the walls asking for a review. So here you go! Don't waste your time. You'd get better food with better service for a cheaper price at a dump like Taco Bell. read more

A couple of must haves IMO are the table side guacamole and the house margaritas. I like to order food that reheats well so I can enjoy the leftovers the next day. A burrito works well in this endeavor and I really enjoyed the shredded beef in the burrito Mexicana - very flavorful. Standard Mexican fare, and probably one of the best places in Sturgeon Bay if I had to guess! My family and I came in, peckish AF and were grateful for the complimentary tortilla chips (served hot) and salsa. BTW the lunch menu is only for weekdays. We got: - Chile Relleno with a beef enchilada: the Chile relleno was very good, and the enchilada was just OK. - pollo ranchero: great flavor, a tad much on the salt. The chicken was cooked well and was perfectly textured. - burrito al pastor: we got this, having enjoyed our al pastor consumption from the Mission area in SF. While the pork was cooked well, there was a noticeable lack of seasoning and sauciness so we found the burrito quite dry. It seemed more like a plain pork burrito. This was a new menu item so perhaps they are still developing on the recipe. Overall, it was a solid experience and if I lived in Sturgeon Bay, this probably would be my go-to Mexican place. read more

I love Mexican food and my mouth is watering in anticipation of my next visit as I'm writing this review. I'm from out of town so it will be a long while. Sad for me. If you live here, be a regular, if you're driving thru or just visiting, stop and eat. Service is attentive and food is good. You're seated, beverage orders are taken and chips and salsa magically arrive. Chips are fresh and crisp. Salsa is mild with a hint of heat served in a carafe with cute individual chili pepper dishes for personal dipping. Caution! Don't eat too many chips as food servings are large. We came for lunch. Ordered small (12oz) gold margaritas. A bit sweet but very good. My lunch chicken chimichanga came with rice, refried beans, and a lettuce/tomato salad with guacamole. The chicken was nicely seasoned, moist and tender. Lightly deep fried with a light cheese sauce. My husband ordered the enchilada lunch special with two beef enchiladas rice and beans. They were excellent. Service was attentive, food was excellent. The only complaint I have is you have to ask for water. It's 90 degrees outside. Do your customers a favor and bring them water without asking. I'm old. I remember when water was automatically provided when you were seated. Ah, the good old days. read more

Wonderful flavors and combinations. The mole sauce was to die for and the tomatillo sauce elevated everything it touched. We ordered a side of bean sauce which was excellent especially with the flavorful and spicy salsa. It was unctuous and creamy. I could make a meal of bean dip and chips if I'm not careful. This place was packed, wall to wall for cinco de Mayo. The music and vibe was good. My husband ordered the shrimp tacos which he said were very good. The fries were actually so crispy and delicious. But I ordered the Chili Relleno meal, and the inside was cold, the shredded cheese was still shredded not melted at all. I was trying not to complain because I was having a good time! But I couldn't even eat it because it was literally so cold. So my husband told the waiter, then the waiter said it's supposed to be shredded not melted. I said okay... but cold?? He looked at me and said yes. Hmmmmm... I make chili rellenos at home and trust me I do not serve them cold. We brought this up to the hostess when paying the bill and she agreed the cheese should have been melted, but did not offer to fix it. We were looking for a place for dinner near our hotel when we stumbled upon this spot. The reviews were good, Mexican food is always a good choice and luckily this was the only restaurant open at that time. Having picked this at such a last moment on a weekend we were worried the place would be packed but luckily it's huge and they had multiple seating options. I remember being extremely hungry but after hogging on the complimentary nachos (which come in an enormous basket) I just went with the taco & a small quesadilla - still a lot. Both of them were tasty. I also tasted the dinner plates with enchiladas, beans, and different meats on the tacos and pretty much all of it was delicious. So were the margaritas! Service was quick and attentive, the ambiance is decent, prices are reasonable, they have a parking lot as well. Def stop by. read more

We consistently go to old Mexico restaurant when we are in Sturgeon Bay. The staff is very nice and it runs very smoothly. The quality of food is good and the prices are pretty good as well. They usually have a drink and perhaps a dinner special that we try. we went in this week and had to draft beers and Carlos one of the servers that has been fantastic. Said we have a special on drafts today. Any one including the imports are three dollars each! What a nice surprise. We have no complaints to go here and it is as pretty authentic as you can get. I don't leave one stars very often. That being said, this was by far the worst Mexican food that I've ever had the displeasure to eat. Food was so bland. Zero flavor. Table side guacamole was grainy and had a gross texture. It lacked flavor and salt. Had I not watched the server add lime, salt, oil, jalapeños, onions, cilantro, and tomatoes, I would not have believed it. I could see it...but I could not taste it. My Chile relleno was awful. The beef enchilada was nasty. The rice and beans were dry and yucky. The worst part was burping it up hours later. Omg. It tasted bad going down and coming up. Service was slow. They were quick to seat you and take your order but only returned twice after. They bring you a big basket of chips, but half of it was mangled and unedible/ dippable. Bathrooms are super tiny. This is my first one star review. I hope it's my last. Honestly I don't know how this place has such high ratings. Everything that could have gone wrong here did: the staff was rude and kept taking their masks off and touching their faces. Service was crazy slow in spite of being one of three two-tops seated in the place about an hour after they opened. The kitchen was playing their music so loud it took over the whole dining room. The margaritas weren't the worst I've ever had but they weren't good. And the food just sucked. The queso was watery AND chunky. I was afraid to eat it, or anything we ordered, for that matter. And I was afraid say anything to our server because he was acting like we were bothering him just by being there. I actually had to choke back tears when I left, it was that bad. 0/10 do not recommend and will not be returning. read more
