It's not what you'd expect from a creation called 'chili crab'. There's no shell to be seen and the crab meat is actually buried underneath. Scoop from the inside out. The experience is great. There is room for improvement. Pacing was a little out of control. We were here for 4 hours for 10 courses. They're pretty ambitious trying to push all of this out and turn the table twice during service...this clearly did not happen the night we were there. There were long lulls between courses, but our group was full of longtime friends and we had plenty to talk about and the somm team refilled our wine glasses. A few times we noticed the time in between, but it didn't impact our experience much. There is so much potential here. You know they are trying for a star. The Bib on the shelf isn't enough. If they can work on the timing bit, I think they are well on their way. Maybe also be a little more discerning and not reusing elements in the meal...a couple of times I heard reuse of significant components, but I can understand the need for a low waste kitchen. I'd be happy to revisit once the timing issue is corrected. We have to give them some time to work on this as they recently converted to tasting menu.

If you're looking for a hangout place after work, this would be a nice happy hour spot. A downside is that with the restaurant being two floors, it's not stroller/ kid friendly. We had to park our stroller downstairs and lug all our stuff upstairs.

Tony's on the Pier is a well-known establishment in Redondo Beach. Situated on the pier, this two-story restaurant and bar has retained its original charm since it first opened. The ground floor features a bar, a cozy fireplace surrounded by seating, and window seats with views of the Pacific Ocean. The upper floor houses another bar, often hosting live music at night and offering a limited menu. The wicker furniture has remained unchanged since the beginning, and while the seating is charmingly kitschy, it isn't the most comfortable. The menu offers a selection of classic dishes reminiscent of the 1970s. The clam chowder, while flavorful, is neither New England nor Manhattan style. It seems to be a blend of both, lacking the thickness of New England chowder and the tomato base of Manhattan chowder. Despite its good flavor, the mix of styles is somewhat disappointing. The smoked salmon chowder is a better choice, delivering a robust flavor that should be the standout soup at this venue. Most of the other menu items are rather bland and typical of 1970s cuisine. The dishes tend to be a bit oily, and the fried items lack the crispiness expected from well-executed cooking. The best compliment I can offer is that if you're seeking a nostalgic taste of your childhood, Tony's won't disappoint. I absolutely love this place! Been coming here forever since family lives right by the pier. The ambiance is nice, overlooking an amazing view! However, this last visit on Friday night disappointed me very much! I brought a few friends and family here with me. We grabbed a table upstairs, and only half of us ordered drinks while my friends asked for hot water for tea. They did not want to order drinks, so we instead just ordered a few cocktails. The waitress said she had to charge $9 for 3 cups of boiling water. Emphasis on boiling WATER! Really? My friend brought her own tea bag due to an allergic reaction ,so she literally just asked for water. There would have been a difference if we were drinking tea that they served. I don't understand why we had to pay that much over just water. That $9 is equivalent to another cocktail. Restaurants and cafe's always provide hot water for free. I believe that is the law. Unless the water is sparkling or bottled of course. My other friends ordered several cocktails at the bar ,so it is not like we were unpaid customers. I was mainly upset over how the waitress handled the situation. She made us feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. She got completely defensive, raising her voice ,which was loud enough for the nice group of people next to us to notice and point out to us. Her reaction was uncalled for. We were paid customers! I was embarrassed because I was raving about this place prior to our arrival. I forgot to ask the waitress for her name ,but she was brunette. I believe she had a low ponytail. If you're looking to soak in Redondo Beach vibes with a heavy dose of nostalgia, Upstairs Tony's on the pier hits the mark. Walking up the narrow staircase, you're greeted by a wall of epic 1970's headshots, local legends, forgotten actors, and weathered charm that instantly sets the tone. It's like stepping into a time capsule, and you're just along for the ride. At the top, you'll find a cozy little crow's nest bar with one of the best ocean views in town. It's perched perfectly, letting you gaze out at the sparkling Pacific while the sea breeze and sunshine do their thing. We kicked back with a couple of well-made drinks, a plate of calamari, and were taken care of by friendly staff who knew how to keep the chill going. The highlight, though? Evyn Charles. So disappointed. What started out as a pretty nice lunch went totally south when they told me as I was paying that they did not take discover (my visa # had been stolen). I have never had this experience anywhere else and I eat out often. It would have been one thing to not accept my card but they treated me like a was robbing the joint. They wouldn't let me call someone from home for their card, wouldn't let me go to the bank (I offered to leave them my phone and purse) and said they wouldn't let me leave without paying, even after I tried all I could think of to pay the bill. Another patron paid my bill which was utterly embarrassing and just to be a snooty brat face one of the waitress tells me "U better take care of him" (novel idea, I didn't plan on paying him back till she suggested it). WTF?! Back it up brat face, I don't take ethics tips from someone of your caliber, especially after the way you treated me. IF YOU ARE GOING TO BE RESTRICTIVE ON YOUR METHODS OF PAYMENT, POST IT ON THE FREAKING MENU. That said, the stuffed shrimp were tasty, the clam chowder was GROSS. Kincaid's blows them out of the water in terms of the service and quality. read more

The Seafood is sub par and the customer service is unacceptable. If you are a patron that demands exceptional customer service then this place is not for you. It almost seems as if the people that work here, other than the bartender at the bar on the second level, are completely miserable. I don't blame the workers because it begins with ownership. Or maybe it's just a lack of common sense. Waiter Service? You might as well make yourself at home and prepare your own meal in their kitchen. The Famous Mai Tai they so arrogantly pitch is good but not great and you can make it yourself at home without having to put up with their rude customer service. Mai Tai recipe: Head down to the Beverage Warehouse in Marina Del Rey and buy a bottle of both Moraga Cay light rum and Diamond Head dark rum. You will also need to pick up a bottle of Tahiti Joe's Mai Tai Mix. Just follow the instructions in the back... 3 parts Tahiti Joe's and 1 part of both rums. Combine em' in a shaker and serve in a glass with shaved ice. Add a slice of pineapple, cherry and spearmint for garnish. Enjoy. read more

SUPER RACIS BARTENDER AND WAITER !!! I really hope the person who kicked me and my sister out reads this. My sisters, my boyfriend and I visited this place last night. We sat at a table by the bar we waited for about 15 minutes waiter never came. Then a none- latino group came and sat at the table right next to us the waiter right away went to take their order. Then we asked politely if we could oder some drinks and she said yes but with an attitude. We were order our drinks before we were done the waiter walked away. We then got up and went straight to the bar to tried and order some drinks. The bartender told us that we were being rude the waiter and started to get loud with us. Then the waiter picked up her phone and threatened us saying she was going to call 911 if we don't leave. SHE KICKED US OUT FOR NO REASON. I had never in my life have been treated with so much hate, you could see the hate in her eyes. We of course left the place. It was just such a bad and sad experience. I visited Tony's on the Pier Restaurant (downstairs) in Redondo Beach last Saturday with a group of eight friends, and unfortunately, our experience was far from satisfactory. Our waitress was initially helpful, discussing cocktail options with us. However, when I asked about the status of my cocktail, she informed me that it wouldn't be served because she believed I was slurring my speech. I was sober, having just returned from my kids' football games, and English is my third language, which might have contributed to my accent. Despite my friends and wife explaining this to her, the waitress dismissed their concerns and refused to serve me the cocktail. Interestingly, she had no problem bringing me a glass for the wine bottle my friend ordered. This situation felt discriminatory and left me uncomfortable. Ultimately, we decided to cancel our orders and went to another restaurant instead. I won't be returning to Tony's and cannot support establishments that treat their patrons this way. read more

This restaurant is where I had my very 1st lobster dinner when I was in 6th grade & it was epic! After all these years gone by, I finally went back on my Birthday w my date who's Birthday was the day before mine so we celebrated our B. Days together. I ordered the Sea Scallops which were good. The service was excellent & our waiter waived the corkage fee & gave us a free a calamari appetizer. I tipped him generously. My only complaint was at the bar & ordered a tropical drink (Pina Colada), took one sip & told the bartender it was horrible (tasted artificial & full of chemicals/. I told the bartender I make my own with only natural & pure ingredients & he said their's is a Pina Colada pre-mixed package which I know is full of chemicals & artificial ingredients. The bar tender didn't charge me for it thank goodness. I ordered a beer instead. I have always loved the view of the ocean at this place & recommend it but stay away from their tropical drinks! Friendly service and beautiful location but the food was very hit/miss. The charbroiled trout was excellent, far better than we expected - but the halibut was the WORST piece of halibut either of us had ever had, both in texture and in flavor (I still question whether it had gone bad). On top of that, the lemon picatta tasted horrendous - the garlic had been burned and there was hardly any salt. That disgusting halibut mess was $44 and we each took only one bite and couldn't stomach another. The waitress was very pleasant and brought us a free dessert pudding to try and compensate, but the $44 garbage halibut (even though they had taken away the full plate where it remained) was still on the bill at the end! I could have given 4 stars, but that faux pas made me question how much they even care about customers' experience or the quality of what they serve up. 1.5 stars from us. I could just not enjoy this place. I was waiting for Robert Irvin to pop in with his Restaurant Impossible crew and tear this place apart. The atmosphere, decorations and whole restaurant just seemed old, dingy, dusty and dirty. When we walked in we were greeted with a horrible dirty smell even though all of the sliding glass doors were open, the fishing nets hanging from the ceiling appeared dirty as you could see dust and cob webs hanging from them. The bar stools are ridiculously ugly. All of the wait staff seems and looks as if they have worked there forever, which isn't a bad thing, but it is when they are so comfortable there that they just bring you the food and don't really entertain and make your visit more enjoyable. We were seated at a table right next to the kitchen door, so it was a high traffic noisy area. I was scared to look past that door. Next visit, we will definitely not be going there. read more

This is an awesome, old-school seafood place. When you step through the door, you're transported in time back 30-40 years. I highly recommend that before eating, walk up to the second story "crows nest" bar and throw back a couple Navy Grog's or other Tiki what-have-yous, or if you're not feeling creative, a beer/wine, and look out at the mighty Pacific. Sometimes, they have live music up in the Crows Nest. I recommend you get there about 40 min before sunset and bring your lady. It's a romantic place, but not stuffy/obnoxious romantic where you have to wear a coat, tie, and have flowers. If you've left room for food, then head downstairs and order the Sand dab platter. It's delicious. Can't go wrong with any of the soups either. Avoid the steak/chicken/pasta, as you're at a seafood place ON TOP of the ocean, so if your entree doesn't swim, then you're at the wrong restaurant. read more

Negative stars for the disgustingly racist, xenophobic treatment of an Asian couple during a difficult time. This is when we should be extra supportive and compassionate, especially those who are most vulnerable; instead, we have Rick here, the manager, who chooses to harass customers based on their race. Rick asked an Asian couple their nationalities (Americans, by the way) then proceeded to call the police and kicked them out. All they wanted was the exact same service you provided to all the other customers. Your bigoted roots were clearly highlighted during this exchange and I sincerely hope that there aren't other victims of your antics. We went for date night and the power went out on the pier including the restaurants. We never got the meals we ordered only one appetizer made it to the table. The staff notified us this happens often in the summer. Which you would think they would have a better process. It was a great inconvenience and the night was ruined. They were more focused on telling the patrons they will write their credit card number and info down and will call within a few days to relay the total before charging the card. I refused to leave my credit card info written down anywhere NO WAY! We told them we'll pay in cash but honestly for one appetizer they should have compensated their patrons in some type of way. Especially, when they're aware of the problem and failed to put a process in place in advance. Do better! read more

Tony's on the pier was a wonderful experience I'm very glad I went the bartender was very friendly when I first sat down he gave me a menu and asked if I needed a drink told him 151 with a Coke cola let me tell you this they pour the drinks perfect I'm very happy with the food decision as well I chose fried calamari delicious dish it is highly recommended thank you again for a wonderful experience I will be back at Tony's also the parking there's a couple bucks I don't know how validation works I didn't ask but they might validate you have to check with them I have no idea but there's plenty of parking wrapped around the pier plenty to see a beautiful arcade this location has so much the restaurant should be very proud of all that they have accomplished. I had a wonderful experience at Old Tony's! It was our first time visiting, and our server, Lora, truly made it unforgettable. She gave us the best recommendations and made us feel so welcome from the moment we sat down. I ordered the Tony's Special baked halibut, and it was absolutely delicious--perfectly cooked and full of flavor. I've came here about every three day holiday weekend for dinner for years. Happen to be in town this last weekend July 29th. My wife and I love the strip and king crab combo. Her having Gastro loving crab leaves me the rest. Our friends arrived ordered after having second bite I choked on steak. This is an extremely racist establishment. I watched the manager, Rick Urkuhart kick out a young couple and their dog after asking them what nationality they are. Each dinner comes with soup and salad. I had the clam chowder, and my husband had the salmon chowder. Everything we had was cooked to perfection and very tasty! For dessert, we had their version of chocolate mousse, which was the only disappointment of the dinner. The mousse was more like a milk chocolate pudding. Total with tax and tip was about $248.00 (we tip 20%). Considering the amount of food and the type of meal, this was very reasonable which included cocktails and dessert. Fortunately, we had reservations and were quickly seated in a roomy table tucked away in the back corner. It turned out to be prime real estate: enough privacy for conversation, but still a great vantage point to take in the entire restaurant. The patio out front might be even better, though, if you're into people-watching. Catalina Avenue on a Friday night offers no shortage of entertainment. But for our group, this table was perfect. The interior has a warm, industrial feel, exposed brick, dark wood, metal accents, garage-style doors, and televisions scattered throughout. Oddly, the Dodgers game wasn't on. Maybe they don't get SportsNet LA. I never bothered to ask because the conversation at our table was far more enjoyable. Let's address the elephant in the room: Friday-night service. The place was packed, and our server was clearly running a marathon. He's usually stationed behind the bar, sports a sleeve of tattoos, looks super fit, and carries a permanent smile. It was fantastic, messy, savory, and exactly what you want from a cheesesteak. My wife paired a Harmonia Mango Wheat ($11) with the Blue Cheese Avocado Burger ($20), a hefty seven-ounce burger topped with melted blue cheese, grilled onions, avocado, applewood bacon, and arugula. She was a happy camper. Our friends split the same burger and also ordered the hummus appetizer, adding filet mignon on top. Excellent call, I snuck a few bites! To their credit, at the end of the evening our server came back to the table, apologized for the pacing, and made amends with a complimentary Crafted Cookie: a warm chocolate-chip cookie topped with vanilla ice cream. At the end of the day, restaurants are about more than perfect timing and topped-off beers. They're about sharing stories, laughing with friends, and breaking bread with people you enjoy being around. The service had its ups and downs, but the food was solid, the atmosphere lively, and Riviera Village on a summer Friday night is hard to beat.
