We came to Tony's on the Pier to celebrate an award I had received, and for a much needed date night with my husband. This place has been here for decades! We hadn't been back here for over ten years. The service was outstanding, the view of the ocean was magnificent, the food was amazing! A great place for a seafood dinner with a very reasonable price! We started with their famous Mai Tai that comes in a souvenir glass, followed by clams casino appetizers. I had the twin lobster tails with a baked potato, and my husband had the crab stuffed shrimp. Each dinner comes with soup and salad. I had the clam chowder, and my husband had the salmon chowder. Everything we had was cooked to perfection and very tasty! For dessert, we had their version of chocolate mousse, which was the only disappointment of the dinner. The mousse was more like a milk chocolate pudding. Total with tax and tip was about $248.00 (we tip 20%). Considering the amount of food and the type of meal, this was very reasonable which included cocktails and dessert. I have been going to Tony's on the Pier since 1980.... I took my Main Squeeze back then. Since then we married had 4 kids which we took to Tony's on a regular basis. I always Ordered the Tony's Halibut, Fried Mozzarella and Clam Chowder. She ordered the Cioppino and kids loved the escargot. I would get Mai Tai's and I have tons of glasses including the gold Anniversary ones. Last year, I went to Tony's and it was AWFUL!!! The Food was not the same. The Carpet was dirty, The Drink was close but not it, and no multiple Mai Tai glasses. I vowed not to go back. Today, I wanted to go back and read some comments from some regulars and guess what it appears I need to stay gone. Tony's should offer if you don't like the food and you stop eating it, you should be refunded or not made to pay, but tip the service worker for the performance. My wife and I been coming for years, not every weekend thing but, every other month. Great food, but the host for some reason she was not friendly, when she took us to our table she threw the menus on table and walked alway. My wife and I thought that was unprofessional. We then noticed her doing that to other guest. She is young but it's still not an excuse. Shortly after we noticed another young man worker going to a table and starts grabbing plates and cups without asking the guest. They looked surprised. Although this is a well known place we will not return! We were only in the bar (so I am not speaking about the restaurant) . Their happy hour menu is largely fried foods and we thought them greasy and they tasted like the oil was old. My husband ordered a Pina Colada and it arrived and was far from good. It seemed they did not add any coco Lopez at all! He had asked for a double shot of rum and that didn't happen! We asked the bartender about the quality and he said that was how they make them. We asked for our bill and discovered they charged him $22.00 for the horrific Pina Colada's! A total ripoff. The ambiance is pretty rustic which is fine but it didn't feel clean and inviting. We had planned to have an appetizer and a drink then go downstairs for dinner but after our bar experience we went elsewhere for dinner. I love coming to Tony's. Last time we were here we specifically came on a storm surge day in December to watch the waves crash against the pilings of the pier and enjoy some sunset Mai Tais in the signature Tony's glasses. We had dinner that night and it was really delicious. This visit was just after lunch. We were looking for a drink and a nibble and Tony's staff was happy to oblige. Upon ordering MaiTais, we were informed that the signature, comp take home glasses were currently out of stock. Not a problem, we already have a collection. Hubs chose cheesy garlic bread and I was excited to try the calamari. MAN! Lightest and best calamari I have EVER had! And Hubs' bread was also YUM! Service is always great! Attentive, but respectful, understanding this special spot that begs guests to slow down and cast a memory or two back. 70s Yatch Rock plays perfectly in the background and the soul exhales. I was thoroughly disappointed. We had ceviche at a little walk up for an appetizer before going to Tony's that was to die for. Then at Tony's we get chowder with no flavor and very little fish. I moved away and sat in one of the red chairs off the bar, right by the live musician who paid special attention to my friend and I. The live musician was great, friendly and welcoming, always asking if we had any requests! It's def an old-timer's bar on the pier, but it captures a beautiful view of Redondo Beach and the rest of the pier. First thing when we walked in the door, a glass bottle shattered on my girlfriend's head from 2 stories up, and none of the employees seemed to care. We pushed through. Wait staff seemed very unhappy to be here. The food is very expensive and bland. Glorified cafeteria food. We ordered the Oysters Rockefeller which had a mound of spinach that way overpowered the tiny oysters underneath. They were hard to choke down. We shared the Charbroiled Seafood Combination which was listed on the menu as "our most popular dish." It was very tiny portions for $35, however the waiter was nice and brought us an extra soup since we were sharing. The shrimp needed deveined and the fish was way undercooked. We have gone to Tony's through the decades, and I am happy to say, I am never disappointed. Meghan was our server for lunch and she, the bartender, and the busboy were spot on! Even though the sun wasn't shining, the food and ambience were outstanding. My favorite is clam chowder and sand dabs! Very rare to find a restaurant that serves delicate sand dabs. I'm a huge fan of "legacy" establishments and try to support them when possible. Hadn't been to Tony's in a couple of years so a friend and I recently met there for drinks. I actually love the decor that has been present for many years and hope it never changes. It's a bit worn, but comfy and nostalgic. It was busy when we arrived and I love that for them. Obviously busy means that it might take a bit longer and that's fine. But the service... there was like zero hospitality. Literally throwing napkins down on the bar and everything done slapdash, including the manner in which the bartenders spoke to us. Yeah, I get it's busy but you can be a bit less rude about it. We did not show up with attitude, complain, or ask for anything other than what we ordered. Anyway, we ordered mai tais and the guy wrapped our glasses up after the first drink. We ordered a couple more rounds and asked for the glasses as we were closing out. The guy said there was a shortage and it was only one per person "temporarily." Ok, maybe tell us this in the first place? As a lifelong South Bay resident, you come to expect certain things: like drinking 3 mai tais at Tony's means you're coming home with 3 new glasses to replace the old ones that everyone's broken. Disappointing, but oh well. What sucks is that they're still charging the same amount for a drink, regardless! Like maybe knock a few bucks off of the drinks after the first one "temporarily." That, combined with how snippy everyone was, will likely mean it'll be another while before I visit again. I'm sure the owners/management don't care because honestly the service has gone way downhill over the past 10+ years and my previous visit a couple years ago was the reason I hadn't been back in a while. My son, Mr. J, brought me here for my birthday lunch. We climbed many stairs to get to this magical sky high oasis. We found ourselves far above the pier crowds. Beautiful 360 degree ocean view! We could see all the way to Catalina. Our waiter was chill and friendly. He answered questions willingly, and with clear knowledge of the appetizers' attributes. He then brought my vodka gimlet pretty quickly. Except, although it was my own fault, I'd forgotten to order it on the rocks. It had been shaken, and was served in a martini style stemmed glass. The cocktail was a sight for sore eyes, with a perfect slice of lime, but was STRONG. (Did I think to take a pic? Nope! Sorry about that!) I'm such a lightweight that I had to dilute the drink with a little of my ice water. On to the food. Pretty limited bar food menu, yet we found plenty of appealing options. Our food was served while we were still relaxing and enjoying the breathtaking view. My son housed his cheeseburger and fries. I snagged a fry, and it was perfect! Fresh out of the deep fryer, crispy yet light at the same time. Plus, Mr J. ate most of the potstickers. (I like the fact that you can choose steamed or fried. We got them steamed, and they were served with two different sauces. Yum!) My crabcakes were a little spicy for my taste, but that's just my mild palate's preference. I noticed plenty of chopped peppers inside, both red and green, but was able to remove most of them. Some folks love peppers, all kinds. Not me. We really hated to leave. I could have easily lingered over another gimlet or dessert. But, we had a list of errands to do, so off we went. I grew up in South Redondo Beach. Whenever I visit my Mom, the upstairs "crows nest" bar at Tony's is a must-visit. (We have amassed a substantial collection of their mai-tai glasses.)
