The food is great, prepared well, and the ingredients are sourced from local businesses as much as possible. The Old Town Cafe is extremely welcoming to families and people with young children. There is a small play area, where kids can keep themselves occupied while they wait for food. The only draw back? The play area is positioned right next to the bathroom, which makes me question safety for the little ones, so keep a close watch. Sometimes there is live music in the restaurant, and the menu is delicious, plus the food comes out pretty fast. Also, the staff is really friendly and accommodating. My girl friend and I visited hometown cafe excited and left disappointed. There prices are fine but they charge quite about for things that at most places are complementary. Blueberrys in your pancake is extra, and so is syrup. Who charges 2 dollars for syrup? Not mt. Bakery, camber or primer cafe, so go to those places instead. We interacted with 3 servers. One of them was polite and accommodating, the other two were rude and not great. We also watched one waiter spill a shocking amount of liquid on two people at an adjacent table and they barely apologized and they didn't offer them anything as compensation. Worst of all they forgot one of the 4 items we ordered. It's not that hard to keep track of 4 items. When we mentioned this they acted like it was our fault and were really awkward about it. One of the waitresses was nice about it though. Not a great experience. I'm giving this review two stars but he second star is for that one waitress who doesn't suck. Very, very Bellingham spot. Extremely vegan/gluten free/dairy free friendly, with local ingredients and local folks. Tofu hash, killer French toast (I confess, it was worth the dairy-filled bite.), and omelets galore! This place was pretty chill. I had to wait about five minutes on a busy saturday. I really liked their menu (although I didn't see a gluten-free one). I had their vegan chili and corn muffin...both of which were pretty good. The food is good, the atmosphere was comfortable and cheerful. So...you may be wondering why I docked a star. The service was pretty prompt and they were courteous, but not much else. It might be because they're busy, but since I work in customer service, I feel like all customers deserve a friendly smile (at the very least) and at least PRETEND to be glad to see customers. My brother and I went to check it out because the yelp review was decent and the food was cheap, and I assume that's why anyone on yelp would check it out. I PROMISE IT IS NOT WORTH IT. they charge a dollar for syrup even if you order pancakes, the wait time is worse than a Disney Land line in summer, and the service is non-existent. We came in with a group of 10 on presidents day. They were pretty busy, so our wait for a table was a little long. The menu is huge, and definitely vegan /gluten free /vegetarian friendly. Plus they have deliciously large mimosas. The wait for the food was a bit longer than I would prefer, but it was busy and we had a large table so it's understandable. I had the biscuits and gravy, and french toast. The french toast was delicious, and is everything french toast should be. Crispy and soft, excellent flavor, and giant! The gravy was super delicious, but the biscuit was a bit dense and tough. Not flaky and tender. Other items I tried, the black beans, good, a little spicy, but something I could make at home. The #9, good, but not huge on flavor. The potatoes were well cooked, but a bit boring. The jam on the table was delicious! I think for the most part everyone enjoyed what they got, but no one was blown out of the water. I don't like that we have to get our own water, it would be less annoying if the cups were bigger. But it seems like we had to refill them constantly. The waitress was on top of everything. Plates were cleared, coffee replenished, got our checks to us quickly. She was also friendly and helpful. Most weekends I can do without the drop in musicians, but you can usually choose to sit in a different area of the restaurant and you'll want to add about five minutes to the posted opening time...otherwise this is the perfect spot for breakfast and lunch. read more

The atmosphere was truly exceptional with the musician playing acoustic tunes though. By the time I got my food, it could have tasted bad and I still would have won that morning. I enjoy eating at this restaurant alone or with one other person. They have a community table that you can pull up a seat on most days without a hassle. Their breakfast menu is simple and they try to source most produce locally, I in particular enjoy their version of eggs benedict (number 9 on the menu) and for lunch their hamburger lunch is excellent. Most meals are served with home fries. Now and then they will have a soup special or salad special that is great, in particular their eastern european borsche soup. You want to avoid this restaurant on weekends and if you are trying to host more than 4 people. They have a difficult time seating in particular for breakfast. read more

I was surprised by my boyfriend waking me up early saying "hurry up, you need to get ready." It turned out to be the best Valentine's surprise every! After driving into downtown, I assumed we were going to Rocket. After we parked, we walked past Old Town Cafe that was candlelit with red long stemmed candles at every table. They offer a large selection of gluten free options which was awesome. We ordered the gluten free pancakes with maple syrup and blueberries and the farmers skillet. The pancakes arrived in hearts!!! The food was awesome and I look forward to going back. Next time I might ask to add meat to the farmers skillet. read more
