Awesome dive bar, average pizza joint. The bar is sufficiently cool to outweigh the pizza. I'm no pizza snob, but this one is mostly crust and just average quality. Definitely still good food and well worth the drive up from Durango, but keep your expectations moderate. Genuinely a fun spot for drinking and I'm sure this place is probably crawling with tourists during ski season, but seemed like a good mix of locals and visitors when we stopped by. We'll be back next time we're in the area. read more

Great place for hanging out. Pizza was delicious and homemade. The calzones were monstrous huge and har lots of filling. We enjoyed this place a lot. It's tiny so we filled the place with our group of nine but there were a couple of tables so the kids had room and were welcome. We even had fun playing pool. read more

This place has the most interactive vibe! There's a cute little cat, shuffleboard, and a pool table! You can even decorate your own dollar and staple it on the wall!! I'm definitely taking my kids here every time we come to Durango. The lady was just the sweetest! The food was AMAZING!!! read more

I would have loved to order food from here while in town, because I heard it was excellent, but it's a shame the disinterested man on the phone asked if I could wait for "two seconds," then set the phone down and walked away, so I got to listen to some drunk in the background yelling about a Cadillac. Best pizza I've found in all of durango. It's a bit weird how you have to order 30 min or more in advance, but the crust makes up for it.

The pizza was fantastic. We sat outside on the back porch and enjoy some cocktails. Be sure to order ahead of time since there can be a long wait time for your food, but its well worth it. Kudos to the staff for their hard work and great experience. read more

Really cool atmosphere at this dive bar/pizza joint up the mountain. Dollar bills everywhere on the walls and ceilings left by people from around the world. Pizza is really good as well. Crust, cheese, toppings all perfect. The only thing I didn't love was the pizza sauce. Tasted like it had a heavy amount of wine or something in it. I've have a condo at Purg for 16 years that I go visit about 4 times a year. Will typically stop at Old Schoolhouse for a couple or three beers after skiing or golf, whatever the season. Stacey the Owner and John the Bartender are top-shelf, great people. The rest of the employees I've never been too impressed with: BS attitudes with the if-you-don't-like-it-then-go elsewhere talk. What this place really is is a dark, dank, stinky, true locals dive bar that also just happens to tolerate the skiers and tourists out of necessity (not because they want to). Two things to remember about this place: 1. Their food really is very good; 2. DO NOT RUN A TAB AND ALWAYS DO THE MATH WHEN YOU PAY. ALWAYS REVIEW YOUR BILL. THESE BARTENDERS WILL RIP YOU OFF. Oh my god, this place is awesome! The staff is funny and fantastic and they can make a really great pizza. The pizza takes a while, but it's really all worth it. Not exactly a kids place, but it's great to takeout and bring back to the house. What I've done is order'd an hour before, and then you don't have to wait for the pizza when you get there. :D It's one of my favorite places in Colorado, and I'll be going there every time I come back to Durango. read more

Don't go here if you are not a local. The manager treated us terribly, kept placing locals' orders in front of us, then couldn't understand why we were irritated that after over 2 hours of waiting we still didn't have our pizza. Locals harassed us & chided us saying, "Good luck on getting your pizza!" Had a terrible experience! Waited almost an hour for a pizza, which was good. Then we got the bill and one of the youngsters there had written "Old Bitches" on top of the bill to identify us. Now, we 3 are over 50 but in great shape and ski bumps pretty well. We were pretty offended and amazed the bill was handed to us with this written on it! What rude employees. 3 hour wait for a luke warm over priced pizza?? C'mon! This place needs to get their shit together. Yes the pizza is pretty good, but why don't they hire a few grunts to make pies? I've eaten here a lot (at least 20x) and you will either get the best pizza ever, or a luke warm mediocre pizza. They are not consistent! The pizza was decent. Wings were good. I did think it was a little pricey but did not really mind since it was close to where we were staying. We were camping at Lake Haviland and dropped in here for dinner. A great find ! Lots of atmosphere and attitude with real nice folks. Pizza is fantastic and craft beer added to a nice meal. Portions are large so lots to take back to camp. Recommend the chicken wings. read more

What is not to love here. I have been enjoying the Schoolhouse over the last 10 years when I have been in town. It is a must stop for me. I love the local vibe and the local love this place has. Everyone is always friendly and their food and drinks are on point. My favorite visit was a few years back when I decided to head up there during some heavy snow. I pulled into the snow-packed lot to find mostly snowmobiles in the lot mixed in with a couple of cars. That is how the locals do it. Don't expect the Ritz when you come to the Schoolhouse, but do expect a slice of local flare that will satisfy each and every time. read more

Seriously, the best pizza I've ever had. When you walk up to this place, it looks like an old road house bar. The parking lot is on dirt and the ceilings are pinned up with dollar bills and business cards. I didn't think much of this place when I walked in. The bartender was very friendly and sarcastic (in a good way). I ordered a local red beer and a pizza. The pizza was phenomenal. Crispy crust with fresh ingredients. The last time I had pizza this good, it was at Zachary's in Berkeley, only this pizza is thinner and lighter. The night we went, it was dead. The pizza is the best I have ever had but because of the altitude it's loaded with gluten so beware you may end up being in the bathroom for a while after. It's a hole in the wall kind of place and the inside is a little odd with dollars stapled to the ceiling, a leg hanging in the door way. Cool, tasty, funky mountain bar. This bar has a TON of character, with lots of characters, great beer, excellent pizza, and reasonable prices. Only downside: it took 70 minutes for our pizza to be ready after we called in our order. However, as long as you can relax, budget the time, have a beer, play old school shuffle hockey or a game of pool, you'll be really happy with the pizza, the nice bartender, and local flavor. There is a lot of hype about this place, and after living here off and on for over 15 years we decided to stop after an awesome day at Purg. I was excited, the kids were excited and my husband headed to the bar for a couple beers. I hear the chick at the bar ask for his ID (um he's 38, with two kids in tow) and I think wtf. This sucked since his ID is with our plane at the hangar. Long story short..... would not serve him. I could order a beer but not one for him. The guy making pizza called my husband a DICK. WOW! Thats not a first but he usually deserves it. Not this time. Put the kids snow gear back on and headed to town ending up at Chimayo were we experienced real service and top notch food. The Olde Schoolhouse was a huge disappointment and I feel sorry for place. WAKE UP schoolhouse and look around. If you want to make money don't turn business away. But then again.... maybe you enjoy the filthy rude, nasty reputation you are building. read more
