Yes, really cute spot for a quick breakfast in the area while walking off the boardwalk. It's only a hop skip from the walk area. This place was great. A ton of breakfast and lunch options and reasonably enough priced. Food came out super quickly and lots of outdoor seating. read more

This patio is the perfect place to have a nice meal, or grab a quick coffee and walk over to enjoy the beach. Great options for food, and they can make pretty much any substitutions that you need. Very allergy friendly. A super cute vibe inside and out! read more

I love this place!! I've been coming here since college so it's a classic spot for me. They have amazing latte flavors (my personal favorite is banana bread) and a great selection of breakfast foods. My go to is always the soy chorizo burrito, and the salsa is always amazing. They staff is friendly, the food comes out relatively quickly, and you can't beat the patio location right across from the beachfront. read more

Great little neighborhood cafe that serves a surprisingly large selection of breakfast and lunch dishes. On a warm and sunny day a casual meal here enjoyed on the patio can be a quintessential California beach town experience. My "basic beach breakfast", $7 was two scrambled eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 slices of bacon. Not fancy, satisfying none the less. Topped it off with a green tea smoothie. Made me happy. Bambie got the tuna salad. Big size. Pretty plate presentation. Greens were crispy fresh. 6 ounces of shredded tuna was lightly dressed. She polished it off. Morning #3 in San Diego and the Olive Cafe was calling my name. It looked so comfortable, a home away from home, and the menu was very appealing! When we arrived, there were some slight construction blocks which caused it to be a little confusing to find the entrance. My group and I walked around a few times and must have looked like obvious out-of-towners. I'm writing this so no one else makes the same mistake and looks silly. Once we finally found our way we ordered the Avocado Toast, Full Monte Burrito and Sultan's Scramble (with added spinach and cheese). I enjoyed my scramble, it was very tasty and I probably would really struggle not ordering it again. My husband ordered the burrito and I unfortunately didn't get to try it but he rated it a 4/5, stating it was good, really BIG, but it was lacking some flavor (season/spice). My father ordered the avocado toast, also a fail on my part as I didn't get to try it but it looked great! If I was a local, I'd probably stop by here all the time. The food is great. Really good. Sadly the staff is comprised of children that struggle to provide a decent level of service. It's expected that there will be an error with your order. It's expected it will take too long and you'll have to ask when your order is ready... usually to discover they've forgotten and haven't started yet. Great local business. Just a shame the service staff falls so far short. read more

A cute little cafe located minutes away from Mission beach! I walked here from the beach to pick up some breakfast to enjoy by the water. I ordered a banana strawberry smoothie and a south swell with a side of sausage and toast. It was such a simple meal yet every bit of it was delicious! My friend and I stumbled upon this place while we were out for an afternoon walk on the bay. We were hungry so we were looking for something on the healthier side. So glad we came here! They have a good variety on their menu. From pastries, breakfasts (all day), salads, soups, wraps, sandwiches. I changed my mind six times and ended up with a chicken wrap which also came with a side so I had to get the tomato soup! The wrap was really good and the soup was really good as well. We had an enjoyable time sitting on the patio enjoying the nice weather. We were happy we stumbled upon this place! Next time I may try one of their salads and of course a pastry! read more

What a great neighborhood cafe! While visiting San Diego, Olive Cafe was about a 1/2 block away from our little beach cottage. I noticed during the weekend days it was quite crowded, so I saved my visit for a Wednesday 11:00am brunch. No crowd at that time. There are many breakfast choices, lots of salads and lunch entrees too. Hubby opted for the Basic Beach Breakfast consisting of 2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon and 2 pancakes. I ordered the tuna salad, which was mixed tuna on a bed of salad greens, tomatoes and some corn. The prices are great and the portions are pretty decent too. Try their baguette - the breads are made at the local bakery site just down the block. Service to our table with our prepared food was very quick. All in all, a great value in Mission Beach. Definitely will return again. read more

Loved this quaint café. First time ever coming here since we visited from out of town. We ordered a couple of dishes for our family, and the food was delicious. I looked at the reviews and decided to try this place. It looks like a small cafe but they have indoor and outdoor seating. I loved their burger, the ingredients were very fresh and the brioche was very soft. Their macaroni salad was awesome. I tried their caramel coffee and absolutely loved it. A nice little cafe in pacific beach! When you get there you walk In to order your food, one customer inside at a time unless you're a family then multiple can be in there at once. After you order you go outside to the patio and find a table (first come first serve). I came here on a Saturday and had to come back the next day! Their açaí bowl is amazing! Along with their ice coffee yum yum mcdumdum (haha)! Anyways I got the açaí bowl both times but first time I also got their kale salad which was good too! I def recommend this place, it's super hard to find parking on weekends! So if you're staying nearby I suggest walking there! The service was really good too! This place was right across the street from our Airbnb and was super cute inside! Staff were very friendly. They had some great breakfast options such as pastries and something i had never had before called Kalache's. They were basically breakfast pockets, bread filled with egg, cheese and meat. Super delicious, if I am ever back in the Mission Beach area I will definitely return! read more

WFH beware! I went there today for the first time to meet a couple friends to eat and do a little work. I was having issues connecting to my work network and was on the phone with my tech and waiting on a friend to meet me. The GM told me the wifi password was for paying customers only (I had been there for probably 8 min) and refused to give it to me. I explained to him I was just trying to set up my computer and needed the wifi password to do so and as soon as i was good to go with my computer, i planned on placing my order. He still refused. I left teary eyed and told a server on the way out that I had never been treated that way by any SD establishment. Absolutely shocking. read more

If you are looking for a cozy, cottage like feel for early breakfast & brunch, this is the place to go. Olive Cafe has done a great job of creating a warm atmosphere. The breakfast/lunch selection is pretty large & they have fresh baked goods available to purchase as well. I usually get a scramble, breakfast quesadilla, or açaí bowl, the breakfast menu is also served all day. There is indoor and outdoor seating, the outdoor patio is fairly large. We usually take our dog. The cafe sits only a couple blocks to the beach. The parking on the street can be a little tough on a busy weekend day, but it is worth it! read more

Parking can always be a struggle on a gorgeous Sunday morning in an awesome beach town but if you turn into the driveway that this establishment boarders there is a nice big parking lot!! Wooohoooo! The line can get lengthy but it always stays moving and the kitchen has it all under control. Just make sure some one does recon to snag a table while another person stands in line with your order if it's the weekend. read more

History

Established in 2005.

Growing up in upstate New York, I used to spend many hours at my community deli not far from my house. Everyone would gather in the mornings for their coffee chit chatting about what was happening in the neighborhood. These fond memories are what I have based my dream on. I wanted to own my own cafe in my new home of San Diego. While attending USD, I enjoyed living in Mission Beach, so it was here that I started looking. When I walked into the Olive Cafe, saw the fireplace and felt the cozy atmosphere, I knew I had found the right place. With a little help from friends and family, I was able to begin making my dream come true. I want the Olive to be a welcoming place where guests can sip coffee out of their very own mugs, munch on some of Dad's Favorite Pancakes, or play games while sharing a warm scone. My mission is to serve fresh, quality home cooked food as quickly as possible. I want you to know I truly believe that it is not just my cafe. It also belongs to those who visit.

We made reservations (party of two) and arrived 20 minutes early fully ready and happy to wait. The initial problem is that the woman who checked us in forgot about us so we waited while we watched folks who did not have a reservation get seated well before us. I went up and asked her and she looked confused and startled and then remembered and we were sat soon thereafter. I ordered the Little Lion Breakfast platter and my wife ordered a Veggie Sandwich. When my platter came out over an hour later every bite was cold. The poached eggs were in a small bowl of water, making them inedible when the yolk was broken. The greens were flavorful but as I said, ice cold - as were the four small wedges of potato I received. The toast was stale and cold. I really have no idea what the room-temperature spread sitting in a bowl on top of the greens was for. My wife's veggie sandwich didn't appear for another 15 minutes. Her potatoes were cold as well and the sandwich was skimpy and the bread stale. We waited another 20 minutes or so after we ate for a check to be dropped - altogether we were there for over two hours. We left hungry, sad because we were really looking forward to this meal, down approximately $70 bucks (I got a coffee drink - which was great and my wife a mimosa), and deflated. A final straw was delivered when my wife needed to use the restroom - to get to the restroom you must go outside and cross into and through the kitchen. We ordered Breakfast Burrito #3 ($15), Big Breakfast 2 ($15), and a side of Kono Potatoes ($7). The portions are pretty big and we had to take some of our food to go. However, I was very disappointed by the taste and the lack of meat in both the breakfast burrito and potatoes. The burrito was 95% eggs and potatoes with small pieces of bacon shoved at the bottom. It didn't have any flavor and was pretty dry, so I wouldn't recommend it.

A great CaliMex meal that had the right amount of ingredients, perfectly cooked eggs with the right amount of spice. I also ordered a piece of Rosemary Bread (though really toast) for $4.5 on the side and it had an excellent flavor. Highly recommended!

I used to love Olive, but over the past year or two I feel like it has been going down hill. First off, it is kind of confusing on how to order if you have never been here before. I know the drill by now, but it's funny watching all of the tourists sit down with menus waiting for a server to come out to take their order. It usually takes them about 5 minutes to figure it out and go inside to order. There should be more signs telling patrons to order inside at the register. Next, the way the food comes out is so unorganized. You give them your name when you order, but there are like three different eating areas so you constantly have a food runner calling out names over and over again while you are trying to enjoy your meal and have a conversation with the rest of your party. It would make much more sense to give every customer a number card when they place an order and pass out food according to the number. This has been an issue for years now. It blows my mind why this hasn't been fixed. After the ordering issues, I think the food has gone down hill as well. I think it goes back to the ordering issue. I was here last weekend and had to wait forever for my food. I went over to the window and there were probably a dozen orders, all backed up but ready to be taken to diners. Since the food running process is so unorganized it takes the food forever to come out and it gets cold and unappetizing sitting around for 5-10 minutes. Lastly, I don't like the different dining areas here. Living in Mission Beach I like to eat outside as much as possible. On a sunny winter day it is too chilly to eat outside because they put these huge umbrellas up to block the sun. When it is 65 degrees I need a little sun to warm myself up! For some reason the umbrellas don't come down, doesn't make sense. The inside dining area smells weird and is always dirty. Olive, you guys really need to get your act together! I don't know if I am going to keep coming back if you don't make some changes! I like supporting local businesses but I can only put up with so much! read more

We are not from the area but we visit often. We were looking for a good place to get delicious coffee and breakfast. This place was great. They are family friendly and have outside seating so that our little pup could sit with us while we ate. They had a kids menu so my daughter was able to get the pancakes she was craving. Some suggestions would be, as first timers we were confused as to were and how to order and if we pick our own seats or wait to be seated. This place is very casual and non formal so you just seat yourself and walk inside to order your entire meal, or just a quick coffee, which ever you prefer. It would also be nice to have more comfortable seating, the chairs left indents on my daughter's legs that looked like Chevey signs, we thought that was funny since my husband is a Chevey guy. And possibly more seating, we were their Monday morning and it was not full but almost. read more

We loved the patio, the breezeway, the whole experience. I had the Agean which was a greek inspired scrambled egg mixture. My sons had the french toast and loved it. We had other orders in the family had The Cousins and Chef's Choice and loved it. The bakery is across the street and my niece ran over and brought back the cinnamon roll. I guess they are known for these. My sons and I had these the next day and they were pretty good. The coffee at the restaurant is better than at the bakery, but when we left we still wanted amazing coffee so we went to a coffee shop nearby. Overall though, it was a good experience. Busy place though, so go early. read more

Great little cozy place with a fire place as you enter the main door. Great coffee a special barista takes your order right away and makes the best coffee concoctions . I ordered the Popeye egg scramble w/ mushrooms, spinach and onions. Toast and a great cup of Joe. The Dining room is cozy and very clean. They only have one restroom in this facility but its ok when its keept up and does not smell. That is always a great thing. You can find parking at the end of Santa Clara Avenue near the bay wich has a great view and you can enjoy your left over cup of joe. read more

For breakfast, I love the Lt. Jr. Quesadilla, Aegean Scramble (add avocado!), and the Groovy Granola. Lunch, you can't go wrong with the Turkey Melt (as a wrap with avocado added), or the Randwich Wrap (again... avocado added). The coffee is organic and local, so you can't go wrong with any coffee drink, but the iced coffee is cold brew and delicious! However if you are looking for good food and quality service then better not waste your time. Most of the breakfast sandwiches they offer are not properly cooked and I don't know why, but they always overcook the eggs. How hard is it too cook eggs? I mean come on! This place is adorable!!! If you want to feel totally at home and comfortable while you sip your coffee or eat your breakfast this is the place to go. The staff are really friendly and fun. Stumbled across this place randomly last year and it was delicious. Back in the SD area again now and had to include as apart of my plans to dine and it's just as delicious as I remembered. This is my spot in mission beach for breakfast. I like the outdoor seating so you could actually do work while eating but than again I have never done this. You probably can get 5 minutes of working in because the food comes out pretty fast. I had the popeye's scramble and my friend had the beach special. Both of us liked my dish better. read more

The coffee is exceptional. Goes great with brandy French toast. Employees go out of their way to help you. You order at the counter and they bring your food. The kitchen gets the food out very fast. Come to Olive cafe if you're interested in giving your day a good start with some hardy food for breakfast. Everything on the menu is tasty and fresh, while the prices are fair and portions are rather large.
